'Daughters of Chibok’ tells an emotional story of Rifkatu Yakubu

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 01:00 AM PDT

'Daughters of Chibok' tells an emotional story of Rifkatu Yakubu
Joel Kachi Benson has released a new film on Rifkatu Yakubu, one of the kidnapped girls from Chibok in a new documentary, 'Daughters of Chibok' and it's emotional.

Five years ago, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from a girls college in Chibok town of Borno state. And Benson has chronicled the trauma which Rikatu's family have continued to live in after she was kidnapped. Lending his camera to the 'Chibok Girls' cause, Benson explored Chibok town and the impact of the kidnap on affected families and the community as a whole.

'Daughters of Chibok' premiered at the 5th year of the kidnap of the Chibok Girls which held in different parts of Nigeria. The 11-minute long film sees Rifkatu's mother narrating how she got married at a young age, had eight children, one of whom was Rifkatu, who was kidnapped alongside other girls while in school.

The documentary shows the high hopes of a broken mum trying to forge ahead in life after the kidnap of one of her daughters. A peasant farmer planting, harvesting and selling seven bags of groundnuts in a year, Benson says Rifkatu's mother is trying to live above the poverty level.

"Well, two things. So for me, this film has to achieve something. I want to be able to generate discourse and support for the women. It's one thing to lose your child and you're waiting for your child not sure if she is going to alive and you are still living in poverty, abject poverty. Most of these women have other children but one is missing and while you are yet to find her, the others are living in abject poverty, that is a double tragedy," Benson explained.

The Chibok story has gained international attention with world leaders calling for the release of the girls but 112 girls are still in either captive or dead. Benson narrates how and why he decided to shoot a film on the kidnapped Chibok girls with a focus on a mother, her family and the community at large.

"The Chibok story is a global story. A story that a lot of people have heard about but there still is no closure. Yeah, we still have 112 girls missing, so from a story perspective, it was, you know, it was an interesting subject to explore.

"I was making a documentary, another documentary in the northeast, and that documentary took me to Chibok. And while I was there, I spoke to the people, engaged with them. And there's this woman that I spoke with and yeah, after speaking with, I was like, you know what I need to, I need to bring people here. I need to bring everyone here to see what's happening here. And so that's what inspired it," he said.

Benson noted that there was a rush of emotions during the shoot so much that it became hard for even the crew to film as Rifkatu's mum was broken and the crew could also feel her pain and trauma.

"That was very tough because what happened was that, prior to that time, we were talking about general stuff about Chibok, about the people about children. And then we got into the more emotional stuff, and then it just became very messed up because she was crying. We were crying. You know, everybody was crying. It was just a very, very, it was really tough. It wasn't easy, it was really hard to stay professional if that if you use that phrase in that state because I could connect to it, I could connect to that story, you know, so it wasn't just detached listening, we were involved. And, prior to that time, we had bonded, so we were like friends, so it was like a friend telling me, you know, her deepest pain. You know, I mean, you really can't stay professional," he said.

The filmmaker noted for his short film, 'In Bakassi,' further explained that the film was short because of the format in which it was shot in Virtual Reality format.

Google has announced that applications are open for the next round of Google Africa Certifications Scholarships.

In line with its commitment to provide mobile developer training to 100,000 Africans to develop world-class apps, Google is offering 30,000 scholarship opportunities and 1,000 grants for the Google Associate Android, Mobile Web, and Associate Cloud Engineer certifications.

The developer training is available to applicants from across Africa, and will be delivered by Google's partners, Pluralsight and Andela. Both will deliver an intensive learning curriculum designed to prepare motivated learners for entry-level and intermediate roles as software developers in these fields.

"Africa is on track to have the largest working-age population of 1.1 billion by 2034," says William Florance, Global Head, Developer Training Programs. "Today's announcement marks a transition from inspiring new developers, to preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow. Google's certifications are developed around a job-task analysis and test learners for skills employers expect developers to have in these domains."

The Google Africa Certifications Scholarships announcement follows the announcement of 15 000 single course scholarships and 500 nano-degree scholarships in March last year.

"Google's continued initiatives focused on digital skills training, education and economic opportunity, and support for African startups and developers, demonstrate our commitment to helping advance a healthy and vibrant developer ecosystem," Florance added. "By providing support for training and certifications we will help bridge the unemployment gap on the continent through increasing the number of employable software developers."

North-West university students take top-prize at 2019 Miway 24-hour Hackathon

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 11:39 AM PDT

Miway

This past weekend saw 25 top Honours and final-year students from five leading Universities from around South Africa take part in the 24 hours hackathon to conceptualise, design and build an actuarial model.

On 13 -14 April 2019, the students took on the challenge of developing a predictive customer retention programme for MiWay insurance – the catch is that they have only 24 hours to think about, design and build a focused customer retention programme from supplied data.

"For the students, the Hackathon is about testing their financial modelling skills and seeing how they shape against stiff competition from students with similar capabilities. For MiWay, the accent is on finding the best skills for taking the company into the future- a future that is becoming increasingly technical and focused on producing complex, mathematically-based solutions for the financial services sector, said Jaco Cloete, Head of Actuarial at MiWay.

The top prize of R20 000 for the first time went to duo, Matt Lourens and Dehan Opperman from North-West University, Master students, in Business Analytics/ Data Mining; Christian Hitchcock, from the 'University of Pretoria, Honour student in actuarial science' the runner-up won R5 000 with Lebogang Moremi, 'The University of Pretoria, Honour student in actuarial science' taking the third-place winning R3 000.

The Winners:

1st place winner – Matt Lourens and Dehan Opperman from North-West University, Master students, in Business Analytics/ Data Mining

Matt – "The challenge was tough; we took a very long time to even understand the problem. There was some great help from the MiWay staff. We included somethings that we have learnt before or been exposed to and we learnt a bunch of new thongs as well, this was a great learning experience. It was a nice opportunity for us to see where our knowledge level is based on data science industry standards. We are excited to win, the main goal for us was to learn and the prize money is a great added benefit.

Dehan – "I didn't know what to expect coming into this, so finding out if we could work together was big for us, as that is what we are used to. We took a really long time to understand the problem, we got a lot of help from the MiWay staff. The challenge made you think about problem-solving as a skill set. Learning and getting experience was our goal, It wasn't all about the money, but it is a great bonus".

2nd place winner – Christian Hitchcock, University of Pretoria, honour student in actuarial science

"Coming into the competition, I really didn't know what to expect and I started off slowly but with the help of the MiWay staff supporting us throughout the competition, I started to get my footing in the competition and began to figure things out. The 24-hours does really go quickly. Overall it was a really good experience and It was nice to get to know the staff from MiWay".

3rd place winner – Lebogang Moremi, University of Pretoria, Honour student in actuarial science

"The 24-hours was very gruelling, there was a lot of pressure, but it was also quite fun. It was a really nice to have the breaks and to interact with the other students; it was also nice to spend some time with some of the people who work at MiWay, I feel like they gave some insight into what is done here. The competition gave me some first-hand experience into data modelling, in terms of what I could be doing, next year which is great. I am very, very happy about winning the R3,000.00 but was experience was the top prize for me".

FG fixes Abuja carnival for November

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 09:26 AM PDT

Abuja Carnival

The Federal Government has shifted the Abuja carnival scheduled to take place in December 2018 to November 2019.

Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information Deaconess Grace Gekpe said the carnival among other gains will provide a platform to recreate and continue the onerous task of nation-building after the peaceful general elections.

She added that the carnival is conceived to showcase the country's strength even in our diversity and to forge a nation of one destiny, one people.

Gekpe stated these on Monday in Abuja at the 2019 Abuja carnival stakeholders meeting.

She said: "It is worthy of note that carnivals aside from being a vehicle for wealth creation, poverty reduction, employment generation, and social integration is also a panacea for a peaceful and stable society. Though diverse in language, tribe, culture and tradition as well as in religious and political philosophy, the carnival is conceived to showcase our strength even in our diversity and to forge a nation of one destiny, one people.

"This year's carnival, among other gains, will provide the platform to unwind, recreate and continue the onerous task of nation-building after the peaceful 2019 general elections.

"The Ministry is not unmindful of the justifiable concerns of the stakeholders within and outside of the sector over the postponements of the Carnival from December 2018 to November 2019.

"While we regret the inconvenience caused by these shifts in dates, it is, however, pertinent that the input from the technical forum would enhance our capacity to organise a world-class event. This way, we will not only sustain the Abuja Carnival but surpass the standard of previous editions."

Cook jailed 14 years for beating brother to death over meat

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 09:07 AM PDT

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere on Monday sentenced to 14 years imprisonment, a cook, Janet James, who beat her eight-year-old brother Saviour Effiong James to death for stealing meat from a pot of soup on August 10, 2009.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye convicted James, 34, following her plea of guilty to an amended one-count charge of manslaughter.

The judge said the 14-year imprisonment will take effect from August 21, 2009 when the James was remanded by a magistrates' court.

She noted that the defendant entered a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution last Monday at the high court, where the case was transferred to in 2013, and that she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of manslaughter.

She said: "The sentence and plea bargain agreement states as follows:

Defendant has shown remorse for the offence of manslaughter committed on the 10th day of August 2009 against the person of one Saviour Effiong
The defendant pleads guilty to the offence as charged.
The defendant has agreed to serve 14 years jail term from the date of remand by this honourable court.
The defendant gives an undertaking to be of good behaviour, upon the completion of the jail term
"In view of this therefore, the defendant, Janet James, is hereby found guilty of manslaughter contrary to Section 317 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003, and is accordingly convicted of same.
agreement entered into by the prosecution, the defendant Janet James and the defence counsel.

"I note also the fact that the defendant has been in remand custody for many years. As a result therefore, the defendant Janet James is hereby sentenced to a term of 14 years. The term of imprisonment is to run from the date of remand, which is August 21st 2009. This is the judgment of the court."

During the trial, prosecution counsel Mrs Abiola Gbadamosi told the court that James committed the offence at about 8pm on August 10, 2009 in the Ilupeju area of Lagos State

Gbadamosi said the convict killed Saviour James by beating him with a turning stick after accusing him of stealing meat from a pot of soup. She then dumped his body in the premises of an insurance company in Ilupeju.

In his confessional statement to the police, admitted in court following her plea, James said: "I carried him (the deceased) on my back and walked a long distance before throwing him across the fence. I decided to dump him there because the offices had long been closed.

"He used to steal. I even warned him when I went to the village to pick him. I beat him on Monday night at about 8pm after several warnings not to steal meat from the pot failed. I hit him with this little pestle (turning stick). But he did not die on the spot. At about 11pm, he woke up to urinate.

"But when I woke up at about 2am, I discovered he was foaming at the mouth. I called him but there was no response. I tried opening his mouth and even hit him yet there was no movement.

"Then I waited until about 5am before carrying him on my back and dumped him inside the premises of insurance firm and returned home."

Herdsmen kill 16 in Nasarawa Community

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 08:44 AM PDT

HerdsMen
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias on Sunday attacked Numa village in Andaha community of Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State killing 16 Mada natives during a naming ceremony.

The incident is coming barely three weeks after it was reported that some suspected herdsmen raped a Mada girl to death which had sparked off a faceoff between the herdsmen and the natives.

Confirming the ugly incident to Journalists in Akwanga, the headquarters of Akwanga Local Government, the senator representing Nasarawa north senatorial zone in the National Assembly, Sen. Philip Aruwa Gyunka, said the celebrants made up of the father, mother and the son were killed during the attack.

The Nasarawa senator describes the killings as unfortunate, barbaric and uncalled for.

Senator Gyunka said: "The unfortunate thing is that both the celebrants- the father, mother and the boy were killed. A pregnant woman is involved in this attack. An aged person above 100 years is also involved in the attack."

"They did not spare women or children and this are the people that don't have arms," he explained.

Gyunka continued that he recently moved a motion on the floor of the Senate calling on the Federal Government to establish a military base in Akwanga as according to him "because Akwanga is a range for people from Calabar, Maiduguri etc meet in Akwanga to go to Abuja.

"You can see that incidents of kidnapping and robbery on the Akwanga – Abuja road. This is as result of people moving with weapons unchecked," Gyunka explained.

Also, the Paramount ruler of the Mada nation, HRH Samuel Gamu-Yare, while speaking to journalists in his palace about the attack on his subjects, said' this thing happened like a thunder strike in the night and the terrain was too accessible and when we informed the police, the perpetrators have vanished."

Gamu-Yare, who is the Chun Mada, confirmed that 16 people of Mada extraction died in the attack.

"We have 16 deaths while several others were critically wounded. The militias attacked the celebrant during the naming ceremony before they suddenly resolve to sporadic shooting."

"Some of the assassins we're identified and some names were mentioned and handed over to the security agents," the monarch revealed.

According to the Mada monarch, "the situation is quite unfortunate, devastating that a peaceful, law-abiding and innocent community like mine, which over decades have never involved in skirmishes either internally or externally, would be attacked when in celebration mood of a naming ceremony by men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen."

Court sentences 66-year-old woman to five years imprisonment for drug trafficking

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 08:14 AM PDT

The Federal High Court Abuja, on Monday, sentenced a 66 -year-old woman, Sikirat Adeyemi to five years in prison for exporting 1.340 kg of heroine.

Adeyemi who was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) had pleaded guilty to the offence.

When the matter was called on Monday, she pleaded for forgiveness, almost in tears, through an interpreter.

Delivering judgment, Justice Florence Giwa-Ogunbanjo held that the crime she committed was a grievous one which the court could not forgive.

"I have taken into consideration that she is a first-time offender and has not wasted the time of the court. It appears that that is the first step to remorse.

"I have heard her plea for leniency and the allocutus, unfortunately, the crime carries a life sentence and the court cannot forgive her, nonetheless, I'll give her a reformatory sentence.

"In view of this, the defendant is sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence is to commence from when she was initially arrested."

The judge said that she hoped that after Adeyemi completed her sentence she would not return to crime.

She ordered that the convict's international passport and the €1,000 found on her when she was arrested should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

She further ordered that the drugs recovered from her should be forfeited to the Federal Government and destroyed 90 days after the judgment if it was not appealed against.

Earlier, Counsel to Adeyemi, Mr Adrian Amadi, by way of "allocutus" pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy and give the defendant a light sentence.

Amadi said that the offence for which she pleaded guilty to, carried a life sentence but since she was a first time offender, had shown remorse and didn't wast the time of the court, she should be shown mercy.

"The convict is 66 years old with an aged mother of 98 years who she looks after. She was a successful businesswoman who lost her business which led her into this unfortunate situation.

"The convict has shown remorse. The offence is punishable with life imprisonment but the court has the discretion to give a lighter sentence," Amadi said.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Mike Kasa also confirmed that the agency had no previous record where Adeyemi had been convicted, making her a first-time offender.

Why Buhari won Nassarawa, by Al-Makura

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 06:03 AM PDT

Al-Makura and Muhammadu Buhari
Nassarawa State outgoing Governor Tanko Al-Makura spoke on live Television Continental programme, 'The Platform', anchored by SAM OMATSEYE, on the implications of President Muhammadu Buhari's victory for the state and country.

For the first time, Nasarawa State delivered the presidency to your party. President Buhari has never won Nasarawa State. What is going on in your mind right now?

Jubilation, contentment and a feeling of fulfilment because not everybody will be that lucky that at the twilight of one's tenure to have all these wonderful things happening for him. The president has won in Nasarawa State, I will advice history because that is for the first time since he embarked on his political journey in 2003 so we have broken that jinx like I have always said.

Secondly, we delivered the governor to APC and what is even most exciting is that this governor that we have elected is someone that we cherish, someone that we are sure have the capacity and capability to move the state to the next level.

The third one is that I was lucky to be elected as senator and not only that, that in this dispensation, we have won all the senatorial seats to the APC. We cannot ask for more. I must say this is one of the most exciting moments politically that I have experienced.

The presidential victory was won but it was such a narrow victory and some people were saying, maybe, the areas that were cancelled probably would have turned the election here or there.

Victory is victory. By the time you attain victory, the issue of how much you have got or how much you won, to me is immaterial. What is the most fundamental thing is for one to win. Even if it is by one vote because that shows that the preponderance of vote, majority of the votes are won by your candidate and as far as I am concerned in a very daisy environment, very difficult and impossible political environment like Nasarawa, for the president to have won for the first time and with a margin of over 6,000 votes, I think is something impressive.

Now you are talking about the difficult state of Nasarawa. The eight years that you have been privileged to shepherd the state has not been easy. There was the Mbaitse crisis, which was a militancy problem that really stole the national limelight. Your political foes also wanted to impeach, and then we also had the herdsmen crisis. These three were very very earth shaking to Nasarawa. Take us through how you were able to navigate these difficult times?

Anytime I think about my political experience in Nasarawa state, 2011 till now, I just get seized by certain feeling of making the impossible possible and I believe that it is not all to ones credit and I think to a large extent by the Grace of God because if you look at the complexity, the peculiarity of Nasarawa state, it is one of the most difficult states.

Why?

It is highly heterogeneous state. Few people know that) a heterogeneous state but in history, in political disposition, and even social psychology of the people because by historical antecedents, the majority of people of Nasarawa State come from three different kingdoms. One sector from the Hausa-Fulani kingdom. One sector from the Kanem-Borno and another from the Korola family. So, it is a meeting point of different cultures, different tendencies and religion; with this background you should expect a heterogeneous lenience to different political persuasion and not only that our closeness to the Federal capital has also made Nasarawa state become much more difficult state to handle because the influence of the Federal capital territory with all the tribes, all the tendencies in Nigeria, overrunning Nasarawa state, every nook and cranny that also helps to complicate the social structure, the political structure of the state.

There has always been a problem in Nigeria politics with the successor and the god father and so on and so forth. How are you guys going to manage the relationship which is very good at the moment?

I think without making a sweeping statement, I will say that what is usually the cause of conflicts between two friends or two like minds is probably when one crosses the line. As far as I am concerned, have been privileged to be governor for eight years and through divine providence I have been able to support Abdullahi Sule and the people of Nasarawa have been able to support us. As far as I am concerned it starts and ends at that. By that time, I take my bow as the governor of Nasarawa State, he is in charge. I will not want to interfere with his focus, his vision and his commitment to governance. I believe by so doing, he will have an unfiltered attention to ensure that his policies, manifestos and objectives are fulfilled.

A lot of time, when you find two friends or one who have facilitated the emergence of the another go sour, I think it has to do with interference and I believe as a statesman, I would rather allow him to do his work and we continue as friends.

But, as a citizen of Nasarawa State and one who has occupied the seat he is occupying, if I see anything that is worthy of comment to him for him to take a look at, I think I will do it in good faith, other than that he is on the saddle, he should be allowed to execute what he believes in to ensure that he achieves his objectives for which he was elected.

Muhammadu Buhari
Dr Bashir Yankuzu, Federal University of Technology, (FUT), Minna) has urged Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari to build a stronger and greater nation in the next four years.

Yankuzu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday.

He said that it was time for leaders and followers to unite and support the move by the present administration to build a Nigeria of everybody's dream.

The Don also said that time had come for all Nigerians to set aside their political differences and support the policies and programmes of the Buhari-led administration.

According to him, with the collective support of all Nigerians, the country will overcome its current insecurity and other challenges.

"Nigerians must be supportive, patient and prayerful for God's intervention in the socio-economic and political growth of our country.
"We are going to witness a better four-year,my advice is for all to unite and support the government," Yankuzu said.

He said that the Buhari administration had made several land mark achievements in so many areas such as road construction, transportation, security, agriculture and physical infrastructure.

Yankuzu, who lectures at the Department of Educational Sciences in the institution, however, advised the Federal government to be more proactive in tackling kidnapping and banditry across the country.

He said arresting and prosecuting all those involved in criminal activities would enable rural farmers resume farming activities and boost food production.

Kit Harington Discusses Fatherhood After GOT Ends

Kit Harington Discusses Fatherhood After GOT Ends
As the heroic Jon Snow in HBOs epic fantasy hit Game of Thrones, Kit Harington has faced down White Walkers, fallen in love, and even come back from the dead. But with the show entering its final season this Sunday, the actor already has his eyes on his next adventure- fatherhood.

The most important job Ill ever have is about to finish, he said in a recent interview with InStyle , adding: Well, not the most. Hopefully, Ill be a father.

Harington is married to actress Rose Leslie, who he met when she was cast as his love interest, the wildling Ygritte, back in Season 2. If youre already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love, Harington told Vogue Italia back in 2016.

Jon and Ygritte didnt exactly get a happy ending together in the world of the show (after an incredibly tumultuous relationship, Ygritte died in Jons arms), but their real life romance appears to be going far more smoothly. However, Harington isnt sure whether theyll ever appear on-screen together after Game of Thrones.

I think almost the worst thing about falling in love with Rose and marrying her is that its going to be very hard to work with her again, he said. Working opposite her was one of the highlights of my life and career. I dont know when, if ever, Im going to get to do that again, because were married now, and its hard to work opposite your wife.

Acting with Leslie might be off the table now, but considering that offhand remark about becoming a father, it sounds like Harington has another project in mind for them as a couple.

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO on Sunday 14 April.

Ogoni Clean-up: Paramount ruler urges FG to mobilise contractors

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 04:49 AM PDT

Ogoni Clean-up
The Paramount Ruler of Bodo City in Rivers, King John Beredon, has urged the Federal Government to mobilise contractors to site to commence the remediation and recovery stage of the Ogoni Clean-up programme.

Beredon made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers.

He said that if contractors were adequately mobilised, Ogoni people and the entire Niger Delta region would have renewed confidence in the Federal Government's promise to kick-start the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report implementation in Ogoniland.

The paramount ruler, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari on his political will to drive the clean-up programme and pleaded that contractors be mobilised to site without further delay.

"We expect that contractors with specialised reputation should be mobilised to site, that is the first thing we expect because the presence of the contractors will make the environment lively to accommodate other processes as stipulated in the report.

"We expect that the exercise should start in earnest with a progressive proof with contractors starting the remediation of impacted sites.

"The coast is now clear, there is absolute peace and the elections are over too, so, let the Federal Government begin to give adequate attention to fulfilling its promise on Ogoni Clean-up.

"Going by the UNEP report, I know that the entire clean-up process is a long term programme but I believe that if bureaucratic bottlenecks are checked, the exercise will be concluded in good time," Beredom said.

"The programme with a life span of about 25 years will take quite a long time, the truth is that our people cannot continue existing in a polluted environment for as much as a decade that is why I'm calling on government to give urgent attention to the plight of Ogoni people and her environment.

"The Federal Government and relevant authorities should adopt a very active method in tackling the Ogoni Clean-up just the way fire fighters will stop the spread of fire because it is long overdue.''

The paramount ruler also said that there was the need for government to recruit only experts for the clean-up to avoid unnecessary alterations and deviation from the provisions of the UNEP report.

He commended government at all levels for an improved security in the state.

"From the state down to the local government, there has been an improved security formation.

"I want to particularly commend the state governor, Mr Nyesom Wike, whose relevant synergy with the federal security has contributed towards the security improvement in my domain," he said.

Men With Six-Pack Abs Are Revealing What it Took to Get So Fit

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 04:49 AM PDT

Everybodys fitness journey is different, but its always good to share tips and insights with other people-especially when it helps bust workout myths. A recent thread on Reddit prompted men to get honest about how they (at least claim to have) attained six-pack abs, and what is and isnt productive, with a number of commenters concluding that, at the end of the day, its mostly diet and genes.

High-protein, low-carb diets, combined with plenty of cardio, proved a popular formula on the thread, as did abstaining from booze. One post claimed that The fat covering your abs really melts after cutting out alcohol, to which somebody replied: The closest I came to a six pack was when I quit drinking. After about a month, Id be able to tell the difference in the mirror after having two beers the night before.

Betcha Didn't Know Ne-Yo's Wife Is Famous, Too

Betcha Didn't Know Ne-Yo's Wife Is Famous, Too
If you can count on one thing from this week's episode of World of Dance , it's that there will talk about J.Lo's love life. But, news flash, Jenny From The Block isn't the only WoD judge who's got an S.O.

Ne-Yo is the proud husband-and has been for three years!-of model and former reality TV star Crystal Smith (ne Renay).

Sound familiar? That might be because Crystal made headlines for her not-so-great behavior (read: nearly got into a physical fight) during her time on E!'s Platinum Life. Or it might because you've seen her name in one of Ne-Yo's many lovey-dovey Instagram posts and captions.

Most recently, the Grammy award winner shared a shot in which he's tightly hugging his wife with the caption, "Imytoperiod. @itscrystalsmith Thank you for putting up with me. It can be difficult sometimes, I know."

All together now: awwwww.

Clearly this duo has nothing but heart eyes for each other. But you're probably wondering who is this Crystal Smith-and how did she sway him away from being so sick of love songs!?

Here's what you need to know about Ne-Yo's wife:

They met through work.
The year was 2015, and Ne-Yo was working on his album Non-Fiction. Since he wanted to shoot a short film with the album, he met with Crystal to discuss her potentially modeling in it. "Our meeting was initially strictly business," the singer-dancer told People . Although Crystal arrived two hours late (apparently she was busy "trying to get info on [Ne-Yo]" to figure out it it was really going to be about business or "if [he] was some creep"), the two quickly hit it off and started "getting to know each other." Two weeks later, the pair began dating and, as Ne-Yo revealed to People , "It's pretty much been bliss ever since then, I can't lie."

Her honesty inspired some of Ne-Yo's music.
In the very beginning of their relationship, Crystal "laid out her dirty laundry," sharing details about her previous relationships, such as what worked, what didn't work, what she desires, etc., Ne-Yo told Essence . After that conversation, I had a laundry list of dos and donts in regard to being in a relationship with her, and I took that list and turned it into a song and that song is Good Man.

At first, Ne-Yo wasn't ready to settle down for Crystal.
Although he "kinda knew right away" that Crystal was the one for him, he says he was very much enjoying being a bachelor-and had been at that point for a year and a half, the artist told People . (Ne-Yo had been previously engaged to Monyetta Shaw, with whom he shares two children.) Ne-Yo says the spark with Crystal was undeniable, and he told People that she "threw a wrench in all my singleness."

Soon after, Ne-Yo proposed somewhat spontaneously-he didn't have any big plans or even a ring. "We were in the hotel room, and and we were talking: I love you, I cant live without you, that kind of thing. And I was just like, Well, why dont you f-ing marry me, then? and he was like, I dont have a ring, and I was like, Do I look like the type of girl that needs a ring to get proposed to?'" Crystal shared with People .

They got married in 2016.
The duo went all out for their L.A. nuptials, which included an 18-person wedding party, a 6-foot cake, and a Cinderella-esque carriage, among plenty of other glamorous elements, People reports. Crystal was 8 months pregnant at the time and still broke it down on the dance floor like a true bride boss.

Now, they're proud parents.
Ne-Yo's Instagram is filled with photos of his "#BlendedFamily," which includes four kiddos: two from his previous engagement-Mason Evan, 7, and Madilyn Grace, 8-and two with Crystal-Shaffer Chimere, 2, and Roman Alexander-Raj Smith, 10 months.

Crystal's Instagram has plenty adorable photos of her young sons, too. Still not enough cuteness for you? Good news! The boys have their very own account: @theesmithboys . 10/10 would recommend following.

She's Ne-Yo's biggest fan-and he's hers.
Crystal, along with her two kiddos and two step-children, joined her hubby at this year's NAACP Image Awards 2019, where Ne-Yo was honored. Sound like a big deal? That's because it is-just take it from Crystal, who shared a prime red carpet photo with the caption, "Congratulations on your NAACP honor babe! It's a big BIG thing ukay! I LOVE my FAMILY!!!" Meanwhile, over on Ne-Yo's feed, you'll find lots of lovey posts proclaiming his love and appreciation for his #1 .

We can't get over Latasha Ngwube's creative braided space buns

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 04:30 AM PDT

The media darling and plus-size advocate looked stunning as she graced the carpet at Filmhouse for the premiere of 4th Republic. The theme for the night was 'Your Excellency' and Latasha came looking regal.

Latasha wore a colourful, printed Ejiro Amos Tafiri maxi boubou with a plunge neckline and waterfall detailing. She channeled a touch of the Orient with her gorgeous makeup and braided space buns.

Often, when one gets braids, the two choices are either up or down but Latasha gave us a different idea. Parting her hair into two, she tied each side up in a tight bun on either side of her head. The look was reminiscent of Star Wars' Princess Leia and we are living for it.

Latasha finished off her striking look with a pair of feathered drop down earrings and a unique gold and black handmade leather bucket bag by Nichole by haguanna.

Now, that's how you make an entrance!

9th Assembly: APC clears Lawan, others to consult PDP colleagues

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 04:18 AM PDT

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly members on Sunday got the nod to negotiate with the opposition in their bid for principal positions in the Ninth Assembly.

It is democratic to do so, the party said in a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu, who stressed that the party has nothing against its members seeking cooperation with other legislators as it is confident that they will not betray the party.

There has been reports of Senate Leader Ahmad Lawan, who has been adopted for Senate President, holding meetings with members of the opposition, but Issa-Onilu said that Lawan was adopted by the party for the position in the first place because of his ability to carry everyone along, which is needed for such a position.

He also said that the party will announce its zoning arrangement for the National Assembly leadership in the coming days.

The statement reads: "We are inundated with reports of our members in the National Assembly holding consultations with members of the opposition over the election of leaders into the Ninth National Assembly. Let me state that our party has no objection to such consultations.

"It is a normal democratic practice world over to stretch hands across the divides.  And contrary to some media reports, the actions of our members do not contradict the party's position. APC has a comfortable majority in both chambers. Therefore; we have the number to produce the leadership.

"But democracy recognises the importance of the opposition, especially when you do not have two-third, which would be required at some very critical situations. For us as a ruling party, we understand that a stable and peaceful National Assembly would enhance our capacity to deliver more for the people of Nigeria.

"So, the party is not averse to negotiation by Senator Ahmed Lawan and our other senators-elect working to fulfil the position taken by our party.

"It is important to note that one of the key considerations for adopting him as the party's candidate for the Senate presidency is his ability to carry everyone along. On top of that, the party has confidence in him not to compromise the progressive ideology of APC. So, clearly, Senator Ahmed Lawan is capable of conducting his negotiations within the prism of APC's objectives."

On zoning and the leadership of the House of Representatives, Issa-Onilu assured Nigerians that the party will put to rest ongoing agitations and "will soon release the zoning arrangements for the principal positions of the incoming Ninth National Assembly.

"The party will also make its position clear in the coming days on the principal positions in the House of Representatives," the party's spokesman said.

He said that the nationwide consultations being championed by the Senate Leader and Leader of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, who is seeking to become the Speaker of the Green Chamber, were in line with the party's policy of inclusiveness.

According to him, national interest is guiding the ongoing rapprochement between APC's candidates and members-elect from the opposition.

Issa-Onilu said: "It is just part of politics and in a democracy, consensus is a key element. To have a smooth sail in the National Assembly, you don't go to the floor pretending that the opposition parties do not exist.

"Even if the opposition parties cannot defeat you, in the spirit of national interest, you must work with them. We want to run a government of inclusiveness, we need every party.

"We will support every effort by our candidates for principal offices in the Senate and the House of Representatives to carry elected members from the opposition along.

"As long as we can, we will keep our members-elect united to present common candidates to lead the National Assembly. The fact that we are saying that we can go it alone is not the same thing as saying that the opposition does not matter.

"We have the numbers to achieve our aim but we have to ensure comfort for the opposition too. Unlike in the past, what we are pushing before the 9th National Assembly is a national interest agenda.

"We want them to see our candidates within the prism of the national agenda we are pursuing."

The Senate Leader at the weekend had audience with more senators-elect from PDP.

He was busy selling his vision of a united Ninth National Assembly.

A PDP senator-elect said: "Actually, Lawan met with us to seek our support. He tried to make a few clarifications which boosted our confidence in him.

"It is not a party affair at all. It is left to individual senator to decide who to vote for."
