Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk admits he doesn't know how to stop Lionel Messi

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk admits he doesn't know how to stop Lionel Messi
Virgil van Dijk admits to being unsure as to how Liverpool should set about trying to contain the threat of "best player in the world" Lionel Messi when they take on Barcelona.

The Reds are set to face La Liga heavyweights at the semi-final stage of Champions League competition.

Last season's beaten finalists are taking aim at another continental showpiece, but have the most testing of two-legged ties to take in before arriving back on that stage.

Messi, who netted twice against Manchester United in midweek to dash the European dreams of one Premier League opponent, poses the most obvious threat to Liverpool's ambition.

Van Dijk will be among those charged with the task of trying to contain the mercurial Argentine, and the Dutch defender concedes that a serious challenge lies in store.

Asked by Viasport how he plans to stop Messi, the Netherlands international said:

"I don't know, we'll see.

"It's going to be a great match-up for all of us.

"Obviously we're very happy to be in the semi-final again and that's the only thing I can say.

"It's about doing it all together, it's never one versus one, it's never just me against a particular striker.

"It's always us against everyone and I think that's the only way we can defend well.

"It's going to be very hard and I think he's the best player in the world but we'll see."

Liverpool booked their place in the last four by easing past Porto, with a 4-1 victory away from home sealing a 6-1 aggregate success.

Klopp is now preparing for a first competitive clash with Barcelona, although a coach that is also chasing down Premier League title glory is not giving too much thought to a meeting with Messi and Co. just yet.

He has said of the Champions League tests to come:

"We are in the semi-final, we play against Barcelona, you can imagine I don't think too much about it.

"But I'm really happy about the fact that we play them. We will find things where we think we probably could use it or whatever, but on the other hand side, I don't care.

"We are in the semi-final and we play on Sunday against Cardiff – that's in my mind and will be in my mind 100 per cent when I wake up tomorrow and not how we play against Barcelona.

"We have enough time for that and we can watch so many teams who tried it already and maybe we find something.

"I'm looking forward to it, but not now."

Man expresses gratitude to God after he survived a thunder strike

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 11:40 PM PDT

A Nigerian singer identified as Suni, took to Instagram to warn Nigerians as he narrowly escaped being killed by thunder while listening to music with an earpiece.

The singer who admitted stumbling upon posts warning about gadgets and the dangers of electrocution when used while connected to a power source, added that it all fell on deaf ears until his near-death experience.

Suni who warned Nigerians as he recounted how he escaped being killed by thunder wrote;

How aware I am about how undeserving I am, of the life, the health, But God loves me regardless.. Because there is no other explanation how i survived something some would tag "Fatal" The rain last night came with a rumbling sky, Eye blinding lightning and ominous thunder strikes, i most times stumble upon posts warning about gadgets and the dangers of electrocution when used while connected to a power source, but ofcourse it falls on deaf ears, and so last night I did it again for the umpteenth time "Listening to music with an earpiece while charging my phone in a feeble attempt to shut out the very loud thunder rumble" Before the last one struck!! It sent a direct current into the house which blew the bulbs and electrocuted me through my phone!!

I could feel my blood draining from my body, I couldn't let go of the phone even with that vigorous vibration till i was thrown from where i sat which disconnected the phone and stopped what would have been.. With a swollen face, Blood shot eyes,Numb feeling in my mouth and a very sharp wincing sound in my ear, I AM ALIVE!! God Did it Again!!!

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 11:30 PM PDT

Gabriel Afolayan will return to the screen assuming the role of a certified criminal in 'Coming From Insanity.'
The young actor is taking on the lead role of Kossi in the Akinyemi Sebastian Akinropo's crime drama.

'Coming From Insanity' also features Sani Danja, Bolanle Ninalowo, Dakore Akande, Wale Ojo, Sharon Ooja, Damilola Adegbite, Odunlade Adekola, Tina Mba, and Sambasa Nzeribe. The film is scheduled for cinema release on June 14, 2019.

The film's trailer shows an angry Afolayan evolving from a regular houseboy into a wanted criminal and eventually a villain. Afolayan tries to convince his colleague in the mansion where he works as a houseboy to quit their jobs for a better life ahead. The audience is taken into the background of the story as Kossi speaks with a French-laced English language.

Another scene from the two-minute long trailer shows Kossi getting acquainted with his new found road to good life and wealth. Kossi is shown as a genius who became a notorious currency counterfeiter and a thorn in the flesh of the Nigerian Police.

Dakore Akande appears in a short scene that portrays her as the wealthy matriarch of the dynasty, where Kossi works as a houseboy. Also notably seen in the film's trailer is Bolanle Ninalowo, who takes on the role of a mercenary killing a number of security aides.

'Coming From Insanity,' tells the real-life story of 12-year-old, Kossi, with genius-level intelligence. Kossi is one of many children trafficked through the Nigerian borders from Togo. He ends up with the Martins, an upper-middle class family of four in Lagos. At their home, he will work overtime for his meals and shelter as a houseboy. Fast forward to the present day, Kossi is still a houseboy with the Martins. He dreams of a better life, but with barely any education, he knows his future is compromised. He relies on his natural abilities and talent to carve out a way for himself, soon discovering the art of counterfeit money printing and floating the most flawless counterfeit dollars this side of the world. Now out on his own, he employs the services of a few friends and grows the operation substantially, landing him on the radar of a young determined agent at the EFCC who will stop at nothing to bring him to justice.

Seun Kuti says SARS brutality will continue because Nigerians believe it is a norm

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 10:30 PM PDT

Seun Kuti believes SARS will continue to harass innocent Nigerians because they believe it is normal.

Seun Kuti is the latest celebrity to speak about the brutality being faced by Nigerians by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and he thinks their menace will continue because Nigerians think it is okay.

The Grammy nominee singer made this known during an interview with Sahara Reporters. According to him, these special police officers are only doing what they have ordered to do.

"If you think there is a problem with SARS then there is a problem with you. SARS is doing what they are paid to do, they are doing exactly what they are ordered to do. You don't understand the attitude and psychology behind our behaviour but we all want to cry, the victim. SARS is the manifestation of our own acceptance of our dehumanization. As black people, one thing we should know is that we are entitled to be everything that humanity is, especially the bad and still be considered human being. No matter what you do, you are still a human being, this is what humans do," he said.

The continuous harassment of innocent Nigerians by men of SARS over the years have continued to receive backlash not just from celebrities but Nigerians in general.

The last celebrity to actually call out the government over the brutality being faced by Nigerians from these police officers was Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde.

Earlier today, she dropped the visuals to the single.

While the video is an animation, it definitely serves the purpose of a shade at the nosy generation as clearly as it could. After the brilliance of his verse on Ice Prince's 'Feel Good,' the rapper is back killing yet another feature with straight bars.

Signs point to this being a resonant single and a street anthem like the classic anti-gossip songs millennials grew up on. 'Mind Your Bizness' is also reported to be the ninth track of the imminent album.

CCT says it has jurisdiction to try Onnoghen made false asset declaration by deliberately omitting to declare the five domiciliary accounts he maintained with Standard Chartered Bank, and in which huge deposits were found.

The tribunal after convicting him, ordered among others, his removal from office, barred him from holding public office for the next 10 years and confiscated the funds in the five accounts, which the tribunal said should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Breaking: CCT says it has jurisdiction to try Onnoghen

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 07:27 AM PDT

Walter Onnoghen
The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has held that he has the power to try the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen on charges of breach of code of conduct for public prosecution.

The tribunal said it was trying Onnoghen as a public officer, not as a judicial officer.

Hence it said there was no need to first refer the charge against him to the National Judicial Council (NJC).

In two ruling on Thursday, tribunal's Chairman, Danladi Umar dismissed two motions by Onnoghen.

The first challenged the tribunal's jurisdiction to try Onnoghen when the allegations against him had not been presented before the NJC.

The second asked the tribunal Chairman to recuse himself from further sitting on the case on the grounds that he had been charged with demanding bribe.

Umar, in the ruling, said the he has been absolved of the allegation that he demanded bribe from a defendant.

He added it was impossible for the Chairman to step down from a case, because where there is no Chairman, there is no tribunal.

The tribunal Chairman also held that the CCT is not under any supervision of any body, including the NJC and therefore, not subject to the directive of the NJC.

Umar reversed the tribunal's earlier judgment in the case of Justice Sylvester Ngwuta on the grounds that its finding in the Ngwuta case was based wrong legal principles and narrow interpretation of statute.

The judgment in the Ngwuta case had upheld the Court of Appeal judgment in the case of Justice H. Nganjiwa, to the effect that any allegation of misconduct against a serving judicial officer must first be referred to the NJC.

‎Umar is currently reading the tribunal's judgment in the substantive trial.

Battle for Lugard House

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 06:53 AM PDT

Yahaya Bello
The Kogi State governorship election will hold on November 2. The stage is set for the contest between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Correspondent James Azania examines the preparations for the poll.

The stage is set for the governorship election in Kogi State. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the exercise will hold on November 2.

The late Prince Abubakar Audu was defeated as a sitting governor when the  PDP snatched victory from the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Twelve years later, the APC, led by Audu/Faleke upstaged the ruling PDP, even though neither Audu nor James Faleke, his running mate mounted the saddle.

Audu died a day after the November 21, 2015 poll. The exercise was declared inconclusive by the INEC, even with the APC in unassailable lead.

A re-run was conducted in the affected areas that led the electoral umpire to declare the now famous "inconclusive," electoral verdict.

Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who came second in the APC primary inherited the victory, followed by the epic court cases that ended with the judicial affirmation of Bello as the elected governor. The ruling party has, however, not ceased hemorrhaging from the wound inflicted from the day its original standard bearer (Audu) passed on.

The Igalas of Kogi East produced governors since the advent of democracy in 1992, the issue of power rotation was a big issue during the 2015 campaign. Audu gave his word that power will shift to either the Igbira, Kogi Central or the predominantly Okun in Kogi West, after his four-year tenure, if elected. Audu did not live to occupy the Lugard House, but his promise of power shift endured, with the governor emerging from outside Kogi East. Bello, from Kogi Central, has no worry as to his proprietary to seek a second term.

Through material and other areas of support for the police and other security apparatus, Bello-led administration has been able to rein in the orgy of criminality, kidnapping and armed robbery, resurgent communal clashes in the Bassa axis and deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen in Omala local government in Kogi East.

Bello has so far been able to navigate the myriads of booby traps that dogged his path at inception, owing primarily to the way he emerged as governor.

While fallouts with some of his earliest and ardent supporters and other co-travellers, including Senator Dino Melaye (PDP – Kogi West) and Chief Clarence Olafemi, a former Acting Governor, who also found his way back to the PDP, may have taken their toll, Bello's appointees and predominantly "New Direction" devotees, remain as a bulwark in his political firmament.

The governor's style, including the running of local government councils through non-elected sole administrators, has continued to generate controversy.

While Bello has been applauded in some quarters for injecting young and new faces into governance in the state, his critics assert that the appointments are anti-productive, neophytes that add no value to administration, as against those who worked for the victory of the APC at the presidential and governorship polls in 2015; an election that led to the outer of the ruling PDP.

On the economic front, Kogi has being unable to move beyond being a predominantly civil service state, and with the alleged backlog of unpaid salaries, which the government has always controverted, the situation is precarious.

The gains of the increase in revenue generation, developments in the business and property sector, which is better attested to in the sprouting of new private petrol filling stations and exotic buildings springing up by the day around the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Lokoja and environs, indicate that things might not be as bad as being painted.

Baring any unforeseeable development, Bello remains the person to beat, in the race for the APC ticket. But, whether or not he will return to office for a second term, can only manifest after the November election.

Dichie:

From the ruling APC, Dr Tim Nda Dichie, from the minority Bassa in Kogi East, has indicated his interest to vie for governorship.

A former member of Bello's cabinet, he took not a few by surprise, when he abruptly resigned as Commissioner for Agriculture, barely more than a year in office.

An experienced politician, philanthropist, insurance and business magnate, Dichie was one of the aspirants who challenged for the APC ticket during the 2015 party primary. The Basange high chief packs a lot of weight and is seen as one of those that may spring a surprise in the months ahead.

Dichie, who prides himself as a "symbol of unity between the majority and minority" has articulated his for seeking office. He said God has positioned him to be next governor of Kogi, and that the financial strength of other aspirants would not change God's plan.

Faleke factor:

Though it might be too early to predict, other contenders likely to bid for the APC ticket, will soon manifest, even as the Faleke factor continue to loom large in the background, as speculations as to whether or not the National Assembly member representing Ikeja Constituency at the House of Representatives, has refused to die down.

From Ekirin-Adde, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi West, Faleke's entrance into the race in 2015, as the running mate to the late Audu, marked a turning point for the APC, and signposted the ouster of the PDP in Kogi.

If Faleke decides to come into the race, there will be alignments and realignments, and the political configuration may not be the same again.

PDP:

Last week, PDP said it will reclaim its place as the ruling party in Kogi State.

The party, in a communiqué by Bide Ogunmola, the Publicity Secretary, which was issued at the end of the state executive meeting held in Lokoja asserted it's readiness for the election.

Assuring the aspirants of a level playing ground, the party said it had no "anointed candidate," ahead of the primary.

PDP said: "That the party is fervently prepared to provide a level playing ground for all the governorship aspirants; the exco has no anointed candidate; and will ensure the emergence of a credible that will defeat the incumbent governor."

It advised members to be resolute and not be disappointed with the outcome of the last (general) election "because PDP was robbed of its victory."

"We have vowed to defend our votes in the forthcoming election. The exco has pledged to lead the struggle to win the next election with all determination and purposeful leadership," it added.

The PDP lamented that "never after now would the people suffer untold hardship in a state abundantly blessed with human capital resources."

It described Kogi as worst off in terms of the people's wellbeing, particularly workers."

It urged members to remain united, as the APC-led administration has "outlived its usefulness, having made Kogi State the poverty capital of Nigeria.

"The outcome of the last general election in which result showed that the PDP won in all elections by popular vote but was robbed by the APC-led administration of Governor Bello, due to intimidation, use of guns and several manipulation that is being challenged legally."

Social Democratic Party (SDP):

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi has also said that it would present a candidate for the poll.

The party said it will present a credible candidate that will "rescue the Kogi from bad governance the state is currently witnessing."

Alhaji Muktar Atima, the chairman of SDP, said that the party would be on the ballot in the election.

According to him, the wide acceptance enjoyed by the party in the just concluded elections has positioned it for victory in the coming governorship election.

He blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission for "working with the APC to militarise the last elections, and outrightly rig the Kogi polls," as the strategy employed to short change the party from being announced as winners, but assured that the party is working to ensure that the peoples' vote in the November election count, that would see a change in baton to the SDP.

He observed that the party made an impressive performance in the Presidential and National Assembly elections, pointing out that, if not for the infractions, SDP emerged as the third force the people of the state voted for.

He predicted a landslide victory for SDP.

Dr. Philip Salau of the Labour Party (LP) is and Dr. Alex Kadiri (APC) are others that may enter the race.

Wanted: Competent Speaker for Kwara

Posted: 18 Apr 2019 06:36 AM PDT

Kwara State
Founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State have urged President Muhammadu Buhari, Adams Oshiomhole, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Governor-elect Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and APC chairman Bashir Bolarinwa to allow the best candidate to emerge as the next Speaker of the House of Assembly.

They said the rule of law and legislative experience should not be sacrificed on the altar of sectionalism when electing the Speaker.

The chieftains said that it would be counterproductive, if rule of law and legislative experience were jettisoned.

Kwara Central Senatorial District Chairman Alhaji Gani Saka counseled the APC leadership to ensure that members, who had laboured were not subjected to further injustice.

Saka said: "In as much as we will want to appreciate efforts of our dear brothers and elected members from the Kwara North, we cannot but be guided by a Yoruba proverb that says, "the blind cannot successfully lead the blind". Therefore, we will like to declare our support for the rule of law, by clearly encouraging our party leaders to do the needful by declaring Hon. Saheed Popoola, who is the only re-elected House member among the 24 House of Assembly members-elect, as the next speaker of the House.

"Hon. Saheed Popoola, who has the best political experience as former council secretary, member of Kwara state polytechnic governing council, Offa local government council chairman, former commissioner and the only returning House member, is qualified to be the next speaker of the House where all other members are fresher."

Saka called the attention of the party leader to alleged injustice saying that emergence of APC candidates for the just concluded general elections was lopsided.

He said that members that decamped to the party were allotted 95 percent in elective positions.

"From the position of governor-elect, deputy governor-elect, senators and House of Representatives members, down to the House of Assembly members, almost all are from the camp of our decampee members, while the foundation members were left with next to nothing in the whole arrangement.

"It will be great injustice to again sacrifice Hon. Saheed Popoola who has sacrificed so much for the party when it was an act of political suicide for any elected party man to stand with the party against Dr. Bukola Saraki's position, he stood with the party.

"When all other members of the current House of Assembly members decamped to the PDP with Saraki, he stood alone with the APC in the state", he said.
