Adeleke vs Oyetola: Appeal Court Opens-Up On ‘inclusion’ Of Justice Oyewole In Osun Election Panel

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 03:49 PM PDT

Adeleke and Oyetola

The Appeal Court, has refuted claim by the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that Justice Joseph Oyewole is part of the three-man panel to hear the appeal on the judgment in the Osun State governorship election dispute.

PDP candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke is currently seeking to remove Governor Gboyega Oyetola, as the elected Governor of the State.

Mrs. Sa'adatu Musa Kachalla, who is the court's spokesperson,  said Justice Oyewole was never considered as a member of the panel.

Kachalla, in a statement on Tuesday said: "Hon. Justice Joseph Oyewole, Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, an illustrious son of Osun State, is not a member of the the Osun Governorship Election Appeal Tribunal set up by the President of the Court of Appeal, who had earlier said that the court must always put her integrity on the front burner.

"The members of the public are therefore advised not to be misguided by desperate and jittery individuals whose action is to heat up the polity.

"Time has changed, and it is better for us to change with time. The era of fake news is over."

Buhari’s Certificate Saga: IPOB Nnamdi Kanu Makes Fresh Revelations

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 03:11 PM PDT

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has reacted to the claim by some legal practitioners and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, that one does not require a Senior Secondary Leaving Certificate to contest for presidency in Nigeria.

The IPOB leader, shared some part of the Nigeria Constitution that proves that President Buhari and Atiku Abubakar need WAEC to become President.

According to the Spokesperson for the President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, SAN, in one of his tweets recently, explained that to occupy the office of Nigeria's number one citizen, one does not need a WAEC certificate.

But Kanu, in a live broadcast from Radio Biafra at the weekend, explained that the 1999 constitution (as amended) makes it clear that Primary 6 First School Leaving Certificate only applies to those seeking work in a State and not at Federal level, Daily Post reports.

According to the IPOB leader, "The 1999 Constitution makes it clear that Primary 6 First School Leaving Certificate only applies to those seeking work in a State.

"Those that quoted this 'Interpretation' out of context to justify the ridiculously unconstitutional claim that Jubril/Bubari does not need a WAEC certificate to contest for the presidency is a disgrace to the league of Senior Advocates of Nigeria and the legal profession in general.

"This section of the constitution refers to state employees, not even federal workers and has to do with employment not running for the office of the president.

"Note, a person needs a specified qualification School Certificate (WAEC) to sit in Aso Rock, not Primary 6 First School Leaving Certificate.

"Jubril/Buhari and Atiku need WAEC to be the President of Nigeria."

Abang, Second Judge In Okorocha’s Certificate Of Return Suit Quits

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 02:25 PM PDT

Gov. Rochas Okorocha

The second Judge, Justice Okon Abang, assigned to preside over Rochas Okorocha, Imo State governor,'s certificate of return suit has withdrawn from the case.

Okorocha in the suit , he prayed for an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him a certificate of return as the senator-elect for Imo West.

Abang is the second judge to quit the case after Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court Abuja, who withdrew from the case only about a week earlier.

After Justice Taiwo withdrew from the case on April 10, it was reassigned to Justice Okon Abang also of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to the PUNCH, Justice Abang was said to have on April 11 fixed April 18 for hearing in the suit. He however announced his decision to withdraw from the suit on the fixed date.

Abang was said to have withdrew from the case sequel to Okorocha's letter to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati, asking for the transfer of the case to another judge.

Okorocha was said to have in his letter sought the transfer of the case to another judge because opponents in the case were jubilating that Justice Abang would dismiss the case.

Abang was said to have, upon seeing the letter in the file without delay, informed parties of his withdrawal from the suit.

Like Abang, Justice Taiwo had also withdrawn from the suit following allegations of bias levelled against him by two parties to the suit.

After INEC refused to issue certificate of return to Okorocha on the claim that the Returning Officer for the February 23 election, Professor Francis Ibeawuchi, declared him winner of the Orlu Zone senatorial election under duress, the outgoing Imo governor ran to court.

In his suit, he is challenging INEC's decision to withhold the certificate of return due to him as the winner of the election.

Intellectual property protection vital in digital world says Kaspersky Lab

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 10:26 AM PDT

Bethwel Opil
World Intellectual Property Day (26 April) raises awareness on how intellectual property (IP) impacts daily life. But while much attention is placed around the legal aspects, companies and individuals need to consider the security ramifications as well.

"Intellectual property runs the gamut of trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Protecting these in an ultra-competitive digital world should be an imperative irrespective of if you are a multinational organisation or a start-up just getting off the ground," says Riaan Badenhorst, General Manager of Kaspersky Lab Africa.

And while this is not limited to any specific industry sector, the importance of manufacturing in Africa puts the pressure on businesses to ensure their secrets are safe from malicious users.

"Research shows that 21% of manufacturers globally have suffered a loss of IP to security breaches. Malware was the most common cause of data loss, but theft of mobile devices and software vulnerabilities that were exploited contributed to this as well," says Bethwel Opil, Enterprise Sales Manager of Kaspersky Lab Africa in Kenya.

Even though cyber security solutions are not typically the first thing that is thought of when it comes to IP protection, the increasingly connected business landscape sees it become a necessity.

"Cybersecurity is no longer just about anti-virus and firewalls. Instead, it encompasses an eco-system that must protect all entry points into an organisation, safeguarding the most fundamental thing needed for success – data," says Badenhorst.

And part of that data is IP that provides a business with its competitive advantage. In fact, data has been cited as one of the most valuable resources today as it enables a company to drive growth and differentiate itself in ways previously unimagined.

"To protect data (and IP) requires cybersecurity solutions that factor in the continually evolving threat landscape. This is especially the case with the ubiquity of mobile devices on the continent. The risk of lost or stolen devices providing an easy point of access to sensitive data must be mitigated with a security approach that encompasses these critical touch points," says Opil.

Additionally, IP protection must be proactive. Companies can ill afford to have that data compromised and try and keep it secure after the fact.

"A cyber security solution needs to provide automatic protection against known and unknown threats. It must scan each programme, device, and other bits of information trying to access the network and assess its threat risk. By having this round-the-clock monitoring, a business (or entrepreneur) can have the peace of mind that all the necessary steps have been taken to protect IP," adds Badenhorst.

IP protection is likely to become only more intense as the Internet of Things and the rise of connected device grow. The organisations and entrepreneurs that will be successful in the future will be the ones that protect themselves now.

ADELEKE Vs OYETOLA: Date To Hear Governor’s Appeal Set By Appeal Court

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 09:19 AM PDT

Ademola Adeleke and Adegboyega Oyetola

The Appeal Court, sitting on Abuja has fixed Wednesday to hear the appeal of governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun state challenging the tribunal ruling that nullified the September 2018 election that brought him in.

Justice Ibrahim Sirajo, the chairman of the tribunal, on March 22, 2019, in a minority judgement declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke as the governor of the state.

The Justice went ahead to nullify the certificate of return issued to Oyetola and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue a fresh one to Adeleke.

But Oyetola, in his 39-ground notice of appeal filed on March 26, 2019, asked the court to nullify the minority judgement.

Oyetola, through his lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), asked the Court of Appeal to uphold his appeal, and not only set aside the tribunal's majority judgment but to also dismiss the October 16, 2018 petition by the PDP and Adeleke.

It was learnt on Monday that April 24 had been fixed by the Court of Appeal for the hearing of the appeal challenging the tribunal's judgment.

Dogara Slams Tinubu, Reveals APC Leader's Plan, 9TH NASS

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:29 AM PDT

Hon. Yakubu Dogara

Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has slammed the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that the former Lagos Governor was pursuing fascist agenda to control all levels of power in Nigeria.

The Speaker, in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Turaki Hassan, and made available to newsmwn on Tuesday, said that only the ignorant with dubious academic certificates will say the maker of a document has padded the document that only he can constitutionally make.

Hon. Dogara was reacting to an earlier statement by Tinubu, where he accused Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Dogara of having padded the country's budget for four years, Daily Post reports.

Dogara's statement added, "We have noted the statement issued on April 21, 2019 by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu wherein he stated his reasons for sponsoring or supporting some aspirants to various leadership positions in the forthcoming 9th Assembly. Ordinarily, this would not have elicited any response from His Excellency, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara, as Asiwaju is entitled to sponsor those he believes will have no choice but answer to his dog whistles anytime he blows same in his capacity as the self acclaimed National Leader of his party.

"If Asiwaju had confined his intervention to stubborn facts, this response would not have been necessary. He, however, used the opportunity to manufacture falsehoods and paint a non-existing picture of the stewardship of Mr Speaker and the work of the 8th House of Representatives under his watch. It is therefore, incumbent on us to set the records straight for posterity.

"Asiwaju Tinubu accused the leadership of the National Assembly of stymieing 'the APC legislative initiatives while attempting to hoist noxious reactionary and self interested legislation on the nation.'

"He said further: 'Just look at the way Saraki and Dogara and their ilk hijacked the Budget Process these past four years. National budgets were delayed and distorted as these actors repeatedly sought to pad budgets with pet projects that would profit them".

"He continues 'Even worse, they cut funds intended to prosper projects that would have benefited the average person. After four years of their antics halting the progress of government, we should do all we can to prevent a repeat of their malign control of the National Assembly.'

"He generously used the usual unexplained words like installing a progressive leadership and so on.

"We do not expect Asiwaju Tinubu to dwell on brazen mendacity, much less murder facts and decorum in his rabid bid to justify his patently clear fascist agenda of controlling all levers of power in Nigeria. Asiwaju Tinubu's nocturnal agenda has no parallel in the history of any democracy and it is more loathsome when he throws caution to the winds and maligns government officials who are doing a yeoman's job of stabilising the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, even in spite of political differences.

"It is on record that the Rt. Hon. Speaker has done more to stabilize this government more than Asiwaju Tinubu and his ilk whose stock in trade is scheming, manipulation and subversion especially when they feel they cannot be caught. When the history of Buhari's administration is written by those who know the truth of what really transpired in the last four years, Asiwaju's pretentious loyalty to President Buhari will then be exposed. We won't say more but no matter how long it may last, the truth will one day overtake lies. Perhaps, Asiwaju is still bitter about the leadership contest for Speakership of the 8th Assembly, even though the actors have moved on culminating in Speaker Dogara magnanimously facilitating the appointment of his opponent in the race and Tinubu's protege as House Majority leader.

"The chief cause of delay in enacting the budget is the persistent refusal or neglect of the Executive to present it in good time.

"For the records, in the last four years, there was no urgency or plan by the Executive to achieve a January to December budget cycle. For the avoidance of doubt, we will show the dates the Budget estimates were submitted by the Executive in the last four years below.
2016 Budget was submitted on December 22, 2015, exactly nine days to the end of the year.
2017 Budget submitted on December 14,2016, just 17 days to the end of the year.
2018 Budget was presented on November 7, 2017, the earliest even though it also fell short of the 90 days stipulated by the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
2019 budget was presented on December 19, 2018 exactly 12 days to the end of the year.

"As if the late or delayed submission of budget estimates wasn't enough, in most cases, Ministers and heads of agencies contributed to the so-called delay by consistently refusing to appear before National Assembly Standing Committees to defend their budget proposals in line with the provision of the Law. At some point, the leadership of the National Assembly had to take up the issue with the President who advised his Ministers to honour legislative invitations to defend their budgets.

" What Nigerians don't know is that the Executive, through the various Ministries, continued to propose additional projects to be included in the 2018 budget even as at April and May of 2018 which further delayed the passage of the 2018 budget. These were communicated officially and if anyone is in doubt, we will exhibit the letters with the dates they were written and received. In any case, the National Assembly inserted a clause in the Appropriation Bill consistent with S.318 of the Constitution which allowed the Budget to last for 12 months after Mr President's Assent. This enabled the Executive to spend more of the capital component of the Budget as it still had 12 months protected by law.

"As an activist legislature, the National Assembly effected an amendment to S. 81(1) of the Constitution to compel Mr President to present the Budget estimates not later than 90 days to the end of a financial year in order to solve this problem but unfortunately, very unfortunately, Mr President declined assent to the bill which was passed by both the National Assembly and over 2/3rds of the State Assemblies.

"The National Assembly made a further attempt to make the Budget process much better by improving the institutional capacity of the Parliament to process and pass National budgets by passing the National Assembly Budget and Research Office (NABRO) Establishment Bill into law. It was loosely modelled after the American Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Again, Mr President declined assent to the Bill.

"It is important to emphasize that the National Assembly is not a Rubber Stamp Parliament and reserves the right, working cooperatively with the Executive to interrogate projects unilaterally inserted by the Executive branch without the input of or consultation with Parliament. The legislature cannot be accused of padding a Budget it has unquestionable constitutional power to review.

"The Budget is a law and the Executive does not make laws. Therefore, it's only the ignorant and those who hold dubious academic certificates that say the maker of a document has padded the document that only he can constitutionally make. In the words of his lordship, Hon Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High court, in suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/259/2014 delivered on March 9, 2016, 'the National Assembly was not created by drafters of the Constitution and imbued with the powers to receive 'budget estimates' which the first defendant is constitutionally empowered to prepare and lay before it, as a rubber stamp parliament. The whole essence of the budget estimates being required to be laid before Parliament is to enable it, being the Assembly of the representatives of the people, to debate the said budget proposals and to make its own well informed legislative inputs into it.'

"The parliamentarians are representatives of the Nigerian people and you don't expect them to rubber stamp budgets that are heavily skewed and lopsided against most sections of the country. It is their responsibility to ensure equitable and even distribution of capital projects across all the nooks and crannies of the country, if the Executive fails to do so. In any case, it is false to state that legislative intervention in the Budget Process is to benefit the legislators and not their constituencies.

"We challenge Asiwaju Tinubu to prove otherwise. He should also show in what way the 8th Assembly acted differently from other Assemblies of the past to warrant the kind of language used. In any case, all the aspirants to the Senate Presidency and Speakership he is sponsoring are majority leaders in the 8th Assembly and took part in the Budget Process that he made the chief basis of his crude attack. This proves beyond doubt the hypocrisy of Asiwaju's stated reasons for supporting his candidates.

"He should find better reasons other than the lies being peddled about the Budget and obstructing government business. Asiwaju shouldn't take better informed Nigerians for fools. Otherwise, when he sought to take control of the 8th Senate and 8th House in 2015, was it because of any Budget Saraki and Dogara had delayed or pet projects they had inserted into any Budget before 2015? Asiwaju must come clean on this matter. He should let Nigerians know why he wants to install both the Senate President, the Speaker and leadership of the 9th Assembly. He may yet win the support of some of them if he comes clean on this matter.

"The 8th National Assembly is on record to have supported Mr President's requests on critical issues of governance. We backed him by Resolution on the issue of fuel subsidy, we backed him on the National Minimum wage, even though we were more sympathetic to workers' rights. In security matters, we never cut any proposal from Mr President save our refusal to rubber stamp a clear constitutional overreach of spending $1 billion in arms purchase without appropriation. We have passed more Bills than any Assembly before us including Bills that are helping the government improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria, and there were times we passed Bills within 2 legislative days. Is Tinubu genuinely ignorant of all these?

"We challenge Asiwaju Tinubu to list out the Bills he claimed were not passed by the National Assembly. The oil and gas or petroleum sector is the most important and critical sector of our economy which accounts for over 70 percent of our earnings, the Executive didn't forward a single Bill to the National Assembly to reform and reposition the sector in the last four years even when repeatedly urged to do so by Mr Speaker in his first year in office. The lawmakers waited in vain and had to take the bold initiative of crafting a Bill – Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PGIB) among others, passed it in record time and transmitted same to Mr President for assent. This Bill was vetoed without an alternative Legal framework proposed by the Executive. Did Asiwaju miss this also?

"Asiwaju Tinubu should mention the so-called bills the Executive sent to the National Assembly and were delayed to show he is a man of honour or forever keep his peace.

"Could someone also challenge Asiwaju to list all the " noxious reactionary and self interested legislation on the nation"? Can he name the bills that are reactionary and not in the national interest? Is this how wayward lust for power blinds the reasoning of people we should ordinarily respect? Is it not most unfair, unpatriotic and wicked for Asiwaju Tinubu to have resorted to factoids in promoting his known fascist agenda which he mistakenly thinks he is keeping secret.

"Finally, we advise Asiwaju Tinubu to be circumspect in his use of language. In this case, he spoke as a spokesperson of depravity. Our reaction must therefore be seen as a provoked counter-punch. Any one can descend into the gutter if he so wishes but no one has a monopoly of gutter language. We won't run an adult day care centre anymore on matters like this."

Arewa youths reject puppet, stooge as Senate President, Speakers

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:14 AM PDT

Youths of Northern Nigeria under the auspices of Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) have declared they won't accept stooge or puppet as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker.

They stated Nigerians desire patriotic, selfless and experienced leaders in the 9th Senate and House of Representatives.

In a terse statement in Kaduna, the Arewa Youths Forum stated such leaders must be driven by the burning desire to fast track legislation, which shall be of benefit to the ordinary Nigerian.

The statement signed by the AYF's Director, Public Affairs, Abdulhamid Bello however said for such leaders to emerge, members of the 9th Assembly must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights and legislative independence.

The youths said: "For record, each and every Distinguished Senator and Honourable Member of House of Representatives-Elect have rights to aspire and stand for Election into various offices, and as well have votes to cast, subject to the laws guiding this exercise in the National Assembly.

"It is disturbing and disheartening that Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members-Elect instead of being allowed the freedom to use their conscience, sound judgment, and conviction based on Agendas of Candidates aspiring for leadership positions in the National Assembly, efforts are being made to remotely control, tele guide, arm twist and force them to vote for candidates whose leadership of the National Assembly may be counter-productive to the accelerated and sustainable delivery of democracy dividends and socio-economic development of Nigeria.

"The Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) is of the view that the recently elected members of the 9th Assembly and forthcoming ones must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights and Legislative independence.

"Therefore, after careful study, wide consultation, deep assessment and review based on our current realities as a nation, it is crystal clear to all discerning and patriotic Nigerians that we do not need a 'stooge' or 'puppet' of a Godfather as a Senate President or Speaker, House of Representatives.

"What we actually need is a Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives that are patriotic, selfless and experienced; leaders that are driven by the burning desire to fast track legislation, which shall be of benefit to the ordinary Nigerian."

Coalition to INEC: Release CTC of Rivers results within 24 hours

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:10 AM PDT

The Coalition of Governorship Candidates and Party Chairmen (CGCPC) in Rivers State have given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a 24-hour ultimatum to release the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the declared results of the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections.

CGCPC, Monday in Port Harcourt, through its Chairman, Pastor Warigbani Zebulun, and Secretary, Chibuzor Anele, stated that making the CTCs of the declared results available would enable leaders of the opposition political parties to have a view, for consideration and determination.

The coalition said: "We have remained law abiding, despite the unlawful collation and announcement of results, without the presence of agents of opposition parties, which INEC and the Nigeria police denied access into the collation centre.

"Several other complaints, including court actions, were ignored by INEC during the collation and capable of plunging Rivers State into crisis, which we sacrificially avoided, even when fake results were declared by INEC's fact-finding committee.

"The leadership of INEC at the state and national levels should do the needful, to avoid unpleasant actions that are capable of plunging Rivers State into crisis.

"We are compelled to accuse INEC of an unholy alliance with Governor Nyesom Wike and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, while depriving many governorship candidates and the various opposition political parties of equal opportunities, rights and privileges."

CGCPC also accused INEC of dancing to the drumbeats of PDP, while declaring that its members would rise against such moves, at the expiration of the ultimatum.

Edo 2020: PDP, APC in battle royal

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:58 AM PDT

The governorship election will hold in Edo State next year. There is a realignment of forces in the two major parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Aspirants are warming up for the race, Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR reports.

A COLD war is on within the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the governorship tickets for next year's election. The first term tenure of Governor Godwin Obaseki will expire in November next year and various aspirants are  warming up to contest against him.

Candidates that contested on the platform of the APC and the PDP in 2016 are Governor Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. They are now battling the intrigues within their  parties ahead of next year's polls.

APC

Within the APC, it is a battle between 'the Establishment boys and Abuja politicians'. The clock is ticking for the Edo State chapter of the APC. There are fears of an implosion in the Edo APC over the governorship ticket. In a few months' time, those against a second term ticket for Obaseki will come out in full blast. The governor has not declared his intention to run for a second term, but his supporters are already propelling him to seek re-election.

There are also indications that he might be denied the ticket, because there is a huge divide between the leaders of Edo APC on whether or Obaseki should be given the nod for a fresh mandate. The battle is between those regarded as 'Establishment boys and Abuja politicians'. Establishment boys are those  appointed by Obaseki or perceived to be benefiting from the administration. Abuja politicians are those not happy with Obaseki's style of governance and claim that they were neglected after working to install the government. They are also known as boys of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole who is also National Chairman of the APC. Some political appointees have indicated that their offices have become redundant because they are regarded as Oshiomhole boys.

Those interested in contesting against Obaseki for the APC ticket are General Charles Airhiavbere, Dr. Pius Odubu and Chris Ogiemwonyi. Those allegedly penciled down to replace Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor are Philip Ugheoke, Johnson Oghuma and Abbas Braimah.

There is no rift yet between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, but to the party leaders on both divides, the cold war is real. Oshiomhole has kept his plans to his chest, even though some APC leaders are waiting for directives from the National Chairman before declaring their support for any aspirant. The outcome of the presidential and National Assembly elections in Edo State shocked Obaseki when he got reports of how some APC leaders sabotaged the election because they were allegedly neglected.

The sins of the governor, in the view of some APC leaders, are many. Top on the list is that Obaseki is stingy. They see his governance style as an attempt to create an eldorado when hunger is biting them. Some claim that he wants to retire them and raise new leaders from their domains. There are complaints of no appointments into various boards of ministries and parastatals. Contracts and juicy appointments are given to those who did not work for the party and non-party members from Lagos State, according to them. They also accuse Obaseki of having no regards for Oshiomhole and other party chieftains.

An APC chieftain who confided in our reporter said there was no rift between Obaseki and Oshiomhole. He said those attempting to build a wall between Obaseki and Oshiomhole thought they would benefit more when the two leaders are fighting.

Another chieftain said Obaseki was more focused on working for the people rather than his second term ticket. The source said the coast would be clear from November after Obaseki's second year anniversary.

Meanwhile, support for Obaseki is swelling by the day. A political group, the Edo Elites, comprising notable leaders of the APC, academics and professionals, began the campaign to ward off any aspirant from reaching out to them, by printing exercise books and other items to be distributed across the state. The inscription on one of the books reads: "GGO Year 2020. 4+4 loading and Continue to give us more of the developments in Edo State."

Last month, leaders of the APC in Oredo Local Government Area dumped their son Airhiavbere to adopt Obaseki as the sole candidate of the party for next year's governorship election. A communique issued at the end of the Oredo APC meeting by the Chairman, Godwin Alabi, reads: "Considering the pace of development in different sectors of Edo State, from infrastructure to education, industrialisation, civil service and judicial reform, prompt payment of pensioners and civil servants emoluments, among others, we are convinced beyond doubt that the only way to sustain the current rapid growth is to ensure that Governor Obaseki continue as governor.

"We, therefore, with full sense of responsibility call on him to run for 2nd term and thereby adopt Governor Obaseki as the sole candidate in the forthcoming 2020 election. We will ensure as, leaders of the party in Oredo, our readiness to pull our resources together to ensure that Governor Obaseki not only fly the flag of the party in governorship election, but as governor for second term."

Last week, the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party rose from its meeting to pass a vote of confidence on Governor Obaseki, because of unprecedented achievements of winning all the 24 seats in the State House of Assembly during the last general election.

Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Azebamwan, who signed the communique after the SEC meeting, said the party would continue to sustain its commitment to give Obaseki the needed support to keep it focused and on track.

A huge billboard close General Airhiavbere's GRA residence suggests that he is interested in the 2020 governorship. The billboard reads: "Hope is still alive". He has been suspended from the APC for alleged anti-party activities, but he has insisted on contesting the governorship primary against Obaseki.

PDP

The victory of the APC in the last presidential election has compelled the PDP to return to the drawing board on who will be its candidate for next year's election. Some leaders said Pastor Ize-Iyamu is no longer keen on contesting for the governorship, because of the outcome of the presidential election.

Before the last general elections, Ize-Iyamu had always emphasised the need to focus on winning the presidential election, which he believed would enhance the party's chances of clinching the Edo governorship. At various occasions, Ize-Iyamu had been introduced as the Edo Governor in-waiting. In 2018, when the party undertook a thank you tour of the 18 local government areas, its chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, had insisted that Pastor Ize-Iyamu remained the party's candidate until the court ruled on a suit challenging Obaseki's qualification.

Orbih, who said he could not abandon Ize-Iyamu in the middle of the river, stated that until Ize-Iyamu gets into that position (governor) he would not be tired of supporting him.

He added: "Even if I am no longer chairman of the PDP, I will still support him. It is proper for me to do what I am doing now. This is because we still have a pre-election matter in court, challenging the qualification of Governor Obaseki. Until the case is decided, he remains a candidate of the PDP. Until that case is decided, we will accord him all privileges."

Some PDP members are, however, rooting for Senator Matthew Urhoghide or Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, the member representing Oredo in the House of Representatives, to be given the party's ticket. They allege that there is no love lost between Orbih and Ize-Iyamu.

The PDP is believed to be waiting for the APC to commit a political blunder as it did in the National Assembly elections for it to return to power in the state. Members of the Edo APC are watching to see where the pendulum will swing, as regards the imaginary fight between Oshiomhole and Obaseki.

Lawmaker blames governor for insecurity in Jigawa

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:35 AM PDT

Badaru Abubakar
A member of the House of Representatives, Sani Zorro (Gagarawa, Maigateri, Sule Tankarkar Constituency), Jigawa State, has called for the resignation of Governor Badaru Abubakar, accusing him of incompetence and highhandedness.

Zorro, a former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the best thing that will happen to Jigawa State is the resignation of Badaru who he said can no longer defend his position as the Chief Security Officer of the state, following pockets of security problems disurbing the state in recent times.

But, Jigawa State Government has dismissed Sani Zorro's call, describing it as the aftermath of one who is still suffering from election defeat.

It also described the lawmaker as, " a frustrated mind that have suffered defeat and total rejection from his constituency due to lack of peformance at the House of Representatives."

The Special Adviser to Governor Badaru on Political Matters, Alhaji Yahya Muhammad (Big Man), said: "Zorro should not be taken seriously because he has lost touch with the realities of recent  political events in Jigawa state."

Zorro, who cited prevailing invasion of bandits and killing of innocent villagers in Jigawa state insisted that Governor Badaru lacked the competence to protect the lives and property of citizens in the  state., Even though  Yahaya Muhammad claimed that Jigawa in the last four years has been peaceful.

Muhammad noted that, "in the last four years of Governor Badaru, Jigawa has never faced any form of attacks; even the ones that happened are the normal attacks by armed robbers, not bandits or Insurgents as claimed by Zorro."

Zorro berated Badaru for his engaging in, "endless and fruitless foreign trips," while bandits are gradually taken over Jigawa state, adding that, "just recently, Badaru  traveled to China for 14 times in three years on personal businesses instead of focusing on the social economic development and governance in Jigawa state."

The lawmaker alleged that Badaru had invited Chinese companies who are his business partners to forceful take over farm lands in the name of industrialisation.

According to him:  "Badaru gave out over 20,000 hectares of lands to the Chinese company without compensation commiserate to the value of the lands. And when people complain or reject the stipend call compensation, they jail them."

Zorro lamented that the worsening security situation in Zamfara started as a result of negligence and called for urgent action from Jigawa state government before the bandits take over the state.

"This was how Zamfara governor neglected his primary responsibility for Governor forum in Abuja. He spent more time in Abuja more than he did in Zamfara while  bandits take over the state.

"Now it has gone out of control and we don't want Jigawa to get to that level. Governor Badaru spend more time out side Jigawa now and ignoring bandits attack in some villages. We want him to resign now before it is too late," Zorro added.

However, Muhammad disclosed that, "the Farms said to be allocated to Chinese was nothing but a baseless lies. Jigawa state government only engages one Mr Lee who has been in Nigeria almost all his life. He is a renowned farmer in partnership with the government a s people of Jigawa state."

He said in the partnership, "a farmer would release half of his farm to Mr Lee while he would be operating half, and in this context instead of the previous one season farming now a local farmer would be doing three times farming with the help of the partnership."

According to him, "most part of Jigawa suffered lack of adequate rainy season to enable them have complete farming activities of thrice season and because of this problem,  the government entered into partnership with Mr Lee who would be supplying Water for the farmlands while a farmer would be getting free water, seedlings and other farming implements. Mr Lee would be farming on half of the farm land, all on  leasing arrangement."

How Obaseki averted doom for Edo APC

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:21 AM PDT

Godwin Obaseki
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the presidential and National Assembly elections in Edo State. But, Governor Godwin Obaseki rose swiftly to abort the plan of the main opposition party to win majority of seats in the House of Assembly elections, reports Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is in a celebration mood. It has broken an all time record in electoral contest in the just concluded House of Assembly polls held on March 9 by winning all the 24 seats in the House. For the first time in the history of the state, the House of Assembly would not be having a Minority Leader.

Basking in the euphoria of its victory in the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had called on Edo people to repeat the feat in the House of Assembly elections by giving the ruling APC a bloody nose. The APC has lost the presidential election by polling 267,842 against the 275,691 scored by the PDP.

The victory of the PDP, especially in Edo South where Governor Godwin Obaseki  and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, hail from, was a big blow to the APC. It was a shock to see a sitting governor losing in his senatorial and House of Representatives seats to the opposition.

In Edo Central, the PDP retained its political prowess, winning the senatorial and the House of Representatives seats.

After the presidential election, Edo APC returned to the drawing board to strategise on how to prevent the PDP from winning majority seats in the Assembly. The APC wanted to avoid a repeat of what former Governor Adams Oshiomhole suffered in the hands of a PDP-dominated Assembly.

Sources in the ruling APC said factors responsible for the electoral defeat were identified. The factors included sabotage on the part of some party leaders, hate speech against President Mohammadu Buhari by some Christian leaders, lack of voter's education, proper sensitisation of the people on the achievements of Obaseki and the need for a cooperative Assembly.

Before the March 9 election, Obaseki held a strategic meeting with party leaders in Oredo where he released the mobilisation fund. Source at the meeting the sum of N40m could not be accounted for. Some youths at the meeting who were shortchanged were said to have been enraged that the leaders could shortchanged them. It was revealed that some leaders did not use prescribed party agents, but opted for family members.

A source at the meeting said Obaseki challenged the affected leaders to reveal what he gave to them.

According to the source: "We were shocked when Obaseki started talking. He revealed so many things. He said he was shocked how the leaders sabotaged his efforts. Obaseki asked them if it were his re-election, that is how he would have lost.

"The governor spoke to a point that he threw away the microphone. None of the leaders utter any word in defence. He has said he would deal with them.

"We are happy that the Governor set up a 25-man team to work with him for the purpose of the House of Assembly election this Saturday."

Obaseki further met with  stakeholders, including the Igbo Traders Union, where he explained to them why they should not support the PDP to have majority in the Assembly.

Unlike before the presidential election when Obaseki decided not to campaign with his achievements, he recorded several speeches which were relayed on radio, television and social media where he talked about the need to continue with projects like roads, Bénin River Port, Industrial Park and several others.

The APC selected new party agents and trained them on the proper way to vote, with a view to avoiding voids votes as was experienced in the Presidential election.

On March 9, there was voters apathy in some areas while other areas witnessed huge turnouts of voters. Agents of the APC were more vigilant as they resisted any attempt.

In Edo Central where the APC had found it difficult to win, the party won all the seats for the first since 1999.

APC candidates that emerged are Chris Okaeben (Oredo West), Crosby Eribo (Egnr) Henry Okhuarobo (Ikpoba-Okha) Roland Asoro (Orhionmwon West) Nosayaba Okunbor (Orhionmwon East) Osaro Obazee (Oredo East) Washington Osifo (Uhunmwode) Ugiagbe Dumez (Ovia North East 1) Vincent Uwadiae (Ovia North East 11) Sunday Aghedo (Ovia South West) Francis Okiye (Esan North East 1) Emmanuel Okoduwa (Esan North East 11) Victor Edoror (Esan Central) Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East) Marcus Onobun (Esan West) Ephraim Aluebhosele (Igueben) Ganiyu Audu (Estako West 1) and Aliyu Oshiomhole (Estako West 11).

Others were Emmanuel Agbaje (Akoko-Edo 11) Yekini Idaiye (Akoko-Edo 11) Eric Okaka (Owan East) Micheal Ohio-Ezo(Owan West) Oshoma Ahmed (Estako Central) Kingsley Ugabi (Estako East).

The Secretary to Government,  Osarodion Ogie, said the results showed President Buhari won in the state, if some APC votes were not cancelled or voided.

Ogie said the PDP has been decimated, adding that it cannot be victorious in any election in the state.

He said: "We saw Obaseki's capacity for annihilating the opposition during the last local government election in which all the 18 candidates of the All Progressives Congress triumphed in the state.

"With all the 24 House of Assembly seats in our kitty, we are determined as a party, to put our best foot forward in the gubernatorial election, come 2020. The rising profile of our party under Obaseki is phenomenal, and Edo people have spoken that they appreciate his people-focused policies and programmes."

Obaseki thanked the voters for coming out en masse to vote for candidates of the APC. He said he was delighted by the enthusiasm and maturity exhibited by voters across the state while casting their ballots.

He said: "My dear good people of Edo State, I thank you immensely for the massive votes you gave to candidates of my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday March 9, House of Assembly election in the state."

"With this overwhelming endorsement of my party and my administration, my government is now turbocharged and fired up to exceed the expectations of the millions of Edo people and residents who reaffirmed their faith in our developmental programmes and policies at the polls on Saturday.

"We campaigned vigorously and impressed it on our people that a vote for the APC House of Assembly candidates, is a vote for me to continue and complete all ongoing projects in every sector of the state.

"Thankfully, this message resonated well with our people and you have charged us to continue with all our ongoing reforms in Edo State. We will continue to create more jobs, construct more roads, renew our education and healthcare system, invest more in the security of life and property, and industrialise Edo State, in our collective quest to actualise the Edo of our dreams.

"I assure you that we will not take for granted this loud vote of confidence in my administration. I will continue to put you, our people first, in all our development plans."

APC adopts 8th assembly zoning formula to have Gbajabiamila as speaker

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:15 AM PDT

Femi Gbajabiamila
The Chief Whip House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Duguwa has explained the rationale behind APC's choice of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, as done against the will of the party in the 8th Assembly arrangement.

Alhassan Ado Doguwa who won his fourth House of Representatives seats from Tudunwada/Doguwa Federal Constituency, said he was going for the post of the Majority Leader as part of the original arrangement of the ruling party.

Speaking to Reporters on Tuesday in Kano, Doguwa insisted that, "it is apparent that the party is considering the original zoning formula suggested in the 8th Assembly, which had at that time Femi Gbajabiamila from Southwest as Speaker, M.T Monguno Deputy Speaker while my humble self as Majority Leader".

He opined that the Northwest having got the highest number of elected members at the lower legislative chambers, the 9th House of Representatives should give northwest the position of the deputy Speaker as well as the majority leader.

Doguwa noted that public service delivery is not the same as providing privately made goods and services to market, "The public accountability is not the same as profit margin, because there are different forces involved which must be understood and improve if we must serve the public better".

He said, "I as Honorable Ado Duguwa today I understand the public service delivery and quality of life and economic fortunes of Nigerians are directly at stake as such as a leading figure I will encouraged and ensure a more collaborative relations with the Executive arm to enrich equatable as well as efficient outcomes".

Duguwa maintained that the 9th National Assembly members needed to use their skills, innovatives and ingenuity in taking the nation to the next level.

" We must focus energy and creativity on getting things done, as leaders we must be faithful honour national call, meeting the needs of our Citizens, schools, water, roads, healthcare and shelter ".

He warned that in this level, government in collaboration with the National Assembly must sure that government  delivered dividends of democracy to  the citizens.

"But no doubts that our nation must always have new challenges the most important of challenges is the challenge of sustainable development and by which a capacity most be build meet the yearnings of the millions of the citizens.

He said his desire is to bring about fundamental changes in public and private sector collaboration in order to move to the next and desired level.

Doguwa promised that as the Nation usher in a new 9th National Assembly his treasure of experience will certainly give vigour and depth in setting a new legislative agenda in pursuit or the Nigeria goals.

"My Leadership and experience are needed to engendered and sustain robust commitment to worthy causes that require effort and sacrifice",

Olumba Olumba disagrees with Christians on death & resurrection of Jesus Christ

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 05:30 AM PDT

Olumba Olumba disagrees with Christians on death & resurrection of Jesus Christ
Founder and spiritual leader of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, Olumba Olumba Obu has strongly disagreed with Christians on death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The spiritual leader who called on Christians and non-Christians to love one another and flee violence, corruption, hatred and respect their leaders so that peace and progress can begin to set in, stated that Jesus died on Thursday as against the popular Good Friday that is currently being celebrated all over the world.

Olumba Olumba Obu who disagreed with Christians on death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in his sermon to mark the Easter festivities in Calabar yesterday, said; "I am declaring to the whole world from the highest heaven that He died for three days and three nights, just as He said. The three days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. These three days should be wonderful days for the whole world, to fast and to mourn and to receive blessing.

"People argue that the Lord Jesus Christ was killed on Friday. This is the argument against that assertion:- If He died on Friday, then He is not the one. What you hear is what He said before it ever happened. That is why we usually preach this gospel at a time like this every year.

"I thank God immensely that the Lord Jesus Christ has openly made the declaration that He will only die for three days and three nights. I have already told you that this week is a wonderful one.

"The feast of the Passover was always celebrated on Friday. All the Jews from all parts of the world had to assemble in Jerusalem for the Passover feast on Friday. Saturday was observed as the Sabbath day, and you know how the Jews regarded the Sabbath day.

"How then would He have been crucified on Friday? That was the day of the great feast of the Passover and so they could not have crucified Him on Friday. It was because they were afraid that there would be an uproar among the people if He was crucified on Friday, the feast day. That is why His death was shifted two days backwards.

"On Thursday morning, at 6:00 a.m., he was condemned to death. From that time till Thursday evening was one day. 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday was the second day. 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday was the third day. The night of Thursday was one night. The night of Friday was the second night; and the night of Saturday was the third night. And so altogether you have three days and three nights.

"How would you compute yours? The whole of Christendom, and the so-called orthodox churches argue that He was crucified on Friday, and so they refer to that day as Good Friday. I want them to count with me whether they would have three days and three nights."
