Lee Rigby Killer Wants To Serve Rest Of His Sentence In Nigerian Jail

Posted: 01 May 2019 12:30 AM PDT

Despite being born in Britain, one of Lee Rigby's killers is reportedly making a bid to serve the rest of his sentence in a Nigerian jail with a VIP wing.

37-year-old Michael Adebowale, who is serving a 45 year jail term for the 2013 murder, was born in Britain but has Nigerian parents. He is currently behind bars in HMP Wakefield, but he is believed to be seeking a prisoner-swap deal.

The Sun reports that he plans to seek a transfer to Lagos' Kirikiri jail where then-Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, agreed to pay for a new £700,000 wing in 2014.

A source told the newspaper: "Michael hates Wakefield. It's stuffed full of lags who see him as a top target. He thinks he can spend the rest of his sentence in Africa."

The Sun also reported that Adebowale has written to immigration experts asking for advice. But it is thought that his bid would fail because he was not born in Nigeria.

He and his friend, Michael Adebolajo hacked Mr Rigby, 25, to death by his barracks in Woolwich, south-east London, in 2013.

Protest over Imposition of “Iyaoloja” and “Babaloja” in Computer Village

Posted: 01 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Protest over Imposition of "Iyaoloja" and "Babaloja" in Computer Village
There was chaos in the Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday after traders shut down activities to protest the planned installation of female and male market leaders "Iyaoloja" and "Babaloja" respectively in the hub.

The traders said that the market was an international market that did not need such imposition of Iyaoloja, Punch writes.

Mr Wasiu Agbaje, an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Engineer, said that hub was not like the regular markets where such should be imposed.

Agbaje said that installing such would undermine the hub because there was no relationship between technology and Iyaoloja.

"What do the Iyaoloja and Babaloja have to offer, what value are they going to add to the hub? And what technological innovations are they bringing?

'"The computer village is not like any other street market where pepper and other things are sold.

"It is an international technology hub and it should be treated as such," he said.

Also, a businessman who preferred anonymity said that the introduction of Iyaloja will undermine the position of computer village internationally as the biggest technological hub in West Africa.

He said installing such Iyaoloja and Babaloja would contradict what the hub was known for and breach the peace there because it was not a regular market.

While we are not sure what caused the fire, 2baba's babymama, Pero turned the heat up on a, shall we say, less than sizzling-hot rivalry by calling out fake people and Annie joined.

Annie and Pero have been at loggerheads for over a decade, until six months ago when they squashed their dispute with a public reconciliationand, but by the look of things, that reconciliation didn't hold water.

Standard Bank selects Microsoft to drive digital transformation

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:44 AM PDT

Standard Bank

Standard Bank Group and Microsoft announced a new strategic partnership that will help to transform the bank's technology estate and internal corporate functions, enabling the bank to accelerate its digital transformation journey significantly improving its employee experience.

The partnership will see Microsoft providing cloud services for the bank's internal corporate functions such as treasury, finance, employee productivity and human resources. This forms part of Standard Bank's multi-cloud approach and strengthens its long-term relationship with Microsoft.

"Standard Bank is embracing digital transformation and the opportunities it presents. They realise that investment in digital transformation is also about investing in your organisational culture, ensuring that employees can succeed in a fast-changing world," says Jean-Philippe Courtois, EVP and President, Microsoft Global Sales, Marketing & Operations. "Together we aim to bring innovation into every aspect of the bank's IT systems, transform every employee experience and in turn enable enriched interactions with the bank's customers. Being part of Standard Bank's digital journey is particularly exciting as we share the ambition of making a positive impact on the African continent."

The new partnership agreement adds to the work the two businesses are doing together. Microsoft already provides infrastructure, software, and platform services to the bank as well as cloud services across its productivity suite. These services continue to support Standard Bank's expansion into Africa as well as enabling a true modern workplace.

"By providing these services, Microsoft is supporting Standard Bank Group in our digital transformation, helping to better leverage data to empower employees, create operational efficiencies, optimise our processes and transform our services and products to serve our clients with consistent excellence," says Sim Tshabalala, Group CEO of Standard Bank. "The relationship between the Group and Microsoft has helped us execute our digitisation strategy and embark on this digital journey."

Last month, Microsoft announced the launch of its new enterprise-grade data centre regions in South Africa. Microsoft Cloud — comprising Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics 365 — offers scalable, available and resilient cloud services to help organisations, businesses and government meet their data residency, security and compliance needs. Microsoft is the first global provider to deliver cloud services from datacentres on the continent, and there are plans in place to migrate a proportion Standard Bank's cloud services to these local data centres.

Microsoft also provides the bank with access to its cloud expertise across its array of teams and businesses allowing it to leverage the learnings from Microsoft's own transformation journey and its strong culture of collaboration.

In its quest to support communities and businesses on the African continent, Standard Bank is also developing a comprehensive education and digital skills programme in Southern Africa to address to critical skills shortages and to upskill the next generation of African cloud experts.

Are you ready for the workplace of the Future?

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:40 AM PDT

George Prinsloo

Technology is visible in all parts of a business and it is important that leaders empower their employees to use new technologies to be digitally ahead. As the workplace continues to evolve, organisations that do not embrace the digital workplace will risk falling behind.

Many organisations fear the shift toward digital because of the perception that it is an expensive exercise. Although this may often be true, there are a number of benefits that come with transforming digitally. The digital workplace breaks down communication barriers, it optimizes business operation and helps organisations attract the right talent amongst other things.

More organisations are committing IT budget on supporting digital workplace strategies that promise to deliver measurable returns. A comprehensive digital workplace strategy will move an organisation towards the future workspace.

In an interview with IT News Africa, George Prinsloo, Regional Sales Manager – Networking Citrix Systems South Africa shared what the workspace of the future looks like, how organisations can prepare and how Citix has had to reinvent itself over the years.

1. It is clear that modern workspace is more digital than before, what does the future workspace look like?
From our perspective we see the workspace becoming increasingly digital, as IT leaders are asked not only to deliver IT services but also to improve business outcomes. According to the 2018 IPSOS research study commissioned by Citrix, currently,51% of South African businesses have moved to the cloud, enabling an environment where employees' demands of working anytime and from anywhere have become a reality.

That said, organisations must remember that, in order to truly drive innovation and agility, careful orchestration of hybrid and multi-cloud environments is essential. Globally we are seeing our clients increasingly adopt a single unified platform that centrally manages users, devices, data, workloads, and networks can optimally leverage global resources and comply with data governance restrictions.

With data centres available in numerous locations worldwide, IT can store workloads near the people who use them to minimise WAN latency. This geographic flexibility also allows IT to keep data inside national borders as required, simplifying regulatory compliance.

2. How can businesses prepare for the workspace of the future?
It is integral for businesses to understand that the workspace of the future concept is being driven by cloud adoption! With hyperscalers like Microsoft and AWS bringing data centres to the African continent, there has been an acceleration of Cloud adoption, especially into public cloud.

The challenge for customers has primarily been the realisation that migrating to the cloud is never going to be a simple lift and shift; rather they will have to navigate their way through a hybrid, multi-cloud approach to meet their desired business goals and end state. The reality of a hybrid, multi-cloud environment is that it becomes difficult for IT to gain complete visibility, management and control. Customers are also concerned about user experience as applications are being accessed from multiple locations across multiple networks (LAN, WAN and internet).

So in short organisations need to plan their cloud migration journey properly and partner with technology vendors that understand the hybrid multi-cloud world and how to navigate their customers through it successfully to help them get to their desired end state quicker.

3. How does Citrix help their customers forge ahead with their digital transformation initiatives?
For 30 years, Citrix has been delivering applications to end users over different networks, giving us the credibility to partner with our customers and provide them with pro-active management, control and visibility across all these various cloud environments. Our solutions allow them the agility and ability to migrate workloads between on-premise and different cloud environments seamlessly.

Further to this, we ensure that the user experience is enhanced in a cloud-based world by providing them with the ability to securely access and deliver any application from any data location, across any network, from any device.

4. Why is it important that a business spends more time on a strategy when they are digitally transforming?
Organisations need agility, and one of the big reasons for organisations moving to the cloud is to reduce operational overhead and to allow IT to drive business agility and innovation instead of spending all their time on 'simply keeping the lights on'.

Control over users, the applications they use and the data they consume become very important. Over and above this I think it's more than just thinking about how to effectively move systems to the cloud. The performance and reliability of an organisation's network also become crucial in a hybrid multi-cloud world. An application is only as good as the network it's consumed over regardless of whether that's a LAN, WAN or the internet.

So it's important for organisations to ensure they have a proper business strategy in place to make sure that their network is cloud-ready, modernised and software-defined in order to be able to fully embrace the workspace of the future.

5. How does Citrix provide their channel customers with the workspace of the future?
Through a combination of our solutions like Citrix Workspace, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Citrix Application Delivery Controllers and Citrix SD-WAN, we are able to truly partner with our customers to provide an integrated and holistic Digital Workspace Experience in a Hybrid Multi-cloud World.

6. How has the journey been?
It's been great, we have been seeing a massive uptake in cloud adoption locally and therefore the adoption of concepts like the Workspace of the Future and SD-WAN networking especially has been very positive for Citrix. For me personally, it's a great feeling to wake up and know that I am part of something bigger; to be able to actually contribute to implementing and driving change on a daily basis in South Africa and Africa specifically is a special feeling.

Aerobotics launches new mobile crop scouting app

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Aerobotics Crop Scouting App

Aerobotics has recently released its new scouting app, Aeroview InField. The app is the latest AgriTech development that aims to actively increase productivity, saving farmers hundreds of hours that are usually spent detecting and documenting problems in the field.

Aeroview InField is Aerobatics' newest all-in-one data capturing solution for improved, all-around pest and disease management for farmers. "Aeroview InField is the latest AgriTech development that will literally save farmers and teams in the field hundreds of hours, increasing productivity with its time-saving technology to detect and document problems in the field," says James Paterson, Aerobotics' CEO.

Purposed to relieve farmers of time-consuming, manual on-foot scouting, the new app underlines a more intuitive, guided experience. Enabling easier farm and task management, the app benchmarks advanced crop monitoring with clear visuals that are often overlooked when scouting with the naked eye. Its problem-tree-detection algorithm leads you straight to the stressed trees in the orchard.

Once the data has been collected, features such as scout missions allow you to assign further on-the-ground assessments and crop treatment to anyone else on your team. Once the farmer has received his high-resolution drone data, a new feature allows him to create a scout route and assign it to anyone on his team, to do ground assessments and perform crop treatment. This again ensures accountability through impactful data-driven decisions using aerial imagery, as well as accountability, since all data is GPS-referenced.

Aeroview Infield has been designed on the backbone of an existing app, Aeroview Scout. The biggest change from the initial app, Aeroview Scout, is that you can add more than one marker per tree. This allows for multiple data points and, therefore, more precise data capturing. Markers can be accompanied by custom notes, photos taken on your smartphone and qualifying data of in-field problems.

Additionally, improved reporting structures with custom thresholds for pests can easily be shared with others. Weekly reports can be downloaded in various formats. "As an industry first, Aeroview InField enables us to create a more user-friendly interface where field workers can easily access advanced, high-end agricultural data-capturing technology like never before," says Stuart Gordon Reid, Aerobotics' head of data science.

Showing its potential for adaptation, the new app can facilitate upcoming software developments such as Drone Scouting. Drone scouting allows farmers who own and fly drones to collect data when needed. The tool is used to control the drone and position it within a five-meter range of stressed trees to capture a 360-degree visual of each tree. Thereafter, the data is interpreted to identify problems without farmers having to walk into the orchard.

Another development to soon follow is Yield Management. It helps farmers make informed decisions on how much fruit to thin during the early stages of the season and optimise their yield when it is time to harvest.

Gunmen abduct Taraba State University Deputy Registrar

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:24 AM PDT

Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday kidnapped Mr. Sanusi Sa'ad, the Deputy Registrar Administration of the Taraba State University, Jalingo.

Dr Samuel Shikaa the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jalingo.

Shikaa said that Sa'ad, who is also the Information and Protocol Officer of the university, was picked from his residence at the university staff quarters at about 1am.

He said the kidnappers invaded the deputy registrar's residence through the back side of the university that was not fenced and took him to an unknown destination.
Alhaji Kalid Sa'ad, a brother to the victim, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the kidnappers had contacted him and demanded for ransom.

He however, did not mention the amount being demanded, saying he was still negotiating with the kidnappers.

The university branch of ASUU is currently on strike over alleged insecurity of staff resulting from lack of perimeter fencing of the institution, funding and pension for staff, among other issues.

NAN reports that kidnapping in Taraba is gradually becoming a daily occurrence as hardly a day passes without a reported case of abduction.

However, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Alkasim Sanusi, while launching operation Puff Adder recently, warned kidnappers and other criminals to leave the state, saying the command was determined to root them out.

Man docked for killing wife over her sexual demand

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:20 AM PDT

Man Docked For Killing Wife

A 46-year-old man has been remanded in prison custody in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, for allegedly murdering his wife in the heat of a quarrel over the victim's demand for sex.

A chief magistrate ordered the remanded of the suspect, Ifeanyi Nwokolo, after he reportedly killed his wife, Ijeoma Nwokolo on April 6, because she demanded for sexual pleasure on the fateful while he was preparing for church vigil.

It was gathered that the couple had lived Rumuigbo area of the city before the fateful when they fought over the wife's demand that the man made love to her before leaving the house.

"We learnt that they had misunderstanding because Mrs Ijeoma Nwokolo asked her husband to have sex with her on a fateful day, but the man was uncooperative because he said he had to attend church vigil service and could not indulge in the act.

"In the course of the argument, the husband pushed the woman away but he must have pushed her too hard, as she fell and hit her head on the concrete wall in their bathroom," a usually reliable police source told our reporter.

Those familiar with the case said when the women fell, the man thinking that his wife was feigning injury, carried and laid her on the bed before leaving for the church vigil.

"It was later when he met the woman still as he left her on the bed that he raised alarm and went to the police station to report the case. He was arrested and detained."

The charge was not read to the suspect when he was arraigned on Monday, because the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

The file was sent to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.

Magistrate Andrew Jaja ordered that the accused person should be remanded in prison custody, before adjourning the case till June 13,

Police partner telecoms companies to curb kidnapping

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:15 AM PDT

The Nigeria Police Force and telecommunication companies have disclosed their readiness to establish a nationwide surveillance system, aimed at reducing cases of kidnapping and other crimes in the country.

The system is expected to be connected to the existing Global System of Mobile (GSM) cell sites across the country.

The Police revealed that all the telecommunication companies will provide cameras that will be installed on each telecoms masts across the country.

This was disclosed by the Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu at the Force headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with telecommunication stakeholders

The IG who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Information and Communication Technology, DIG Godwin Nwobodo said the interventions will help curb the rate of kidnapping which he said has reached an alarming and embarrassing level.

He said: "The advent of Global System of Mobile (GSM), communication in Nigeria brought about a lot of positive innovations including integrating the country into the globalized world. These positive trends came with attendant negatives such as increase in crimes including increase in armed robbery, transnational crimes, insurgency and kidnapping among others.

"It is common knowledge that GSM communications enhances planning and coordination of these criminal activities. These crimes especially kidnapping has become so prevalent all over the country and has reached an alarming embarrassing level, necessitating urgent and drastic interventions."

On how the partnership will work, the IG said: "The intervention from the NPF and sister security agencies will necessitate partnering with telecommunications companies in deploying a nationwide surveillance system via the existing GSM cell site.

"This will entail the provision of two surveillance Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras each by the telecoms companies on all telecom masts across the country. The camera is cost effective and has a great outdoor performance and is currently used in China and Dubai. The cameras with their Internet Protocol (IP) address will in turn be remotely connected to the nearest Divisional Police Stations, Area Commands, Command and Control centre or server room at the police headquarters, Abuja.

"The telecoms operators are mandated to provide at least 200 sim card per state to be used by the police body cam and vehicular system with unlimited data plan to support the project as part of their corporate social responsibility."

He also urged the telecommunication providers to give it access to short code or emergency number '199' or '999'.

He said: "Before now, the defunct NITEL provided short code emergency number 199 that is routed to all police control rooms nationwide but when NITEL stopped functioning, this service became unavailable to the Force.

"I wish to urge all stakeholders in the telecommunication service providers to help the Force in providing access to short code or emergency number 199 or 999 that will be designated to the Force to be routed to all our control rooms nationwide. This will help us in serving you better and discharge our statutory function to the nation."

The Force also urged the stakeholders to assist it in establishment of an ICT Centre and e-library that will enhance its capability.

Also speaking, the chairman of Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo while pledging the support of the stakeholders, urged the IG to direct his men to protect its infrastructure and not to be involved in tampering or preventing access to telecom sites by operating staffs.

He also sought the support of the IG to arrest and persecute anyone that attempts to vandalise or close down its infrastructure.

Other request made by Adebayo include: "The IG should direct all police commands to kindly and strictly enforce taxation demands pursuant to court orders only as it were done before  and enforce security of telecoms infrastructure in volatile areas.

"Telecoms infrastructure in police formations across the country should be free of charge as they also constitute and declare as security infrastructure."

Nigeria does not have 20m housing deficit – Fashola

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:09 AM PDT

Babatunde Raji Fashola

Minister for Works, Housing and Power Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Tuesday dismissed insinuations that Nigeria has five million housing deficit.

He conceded that Nigeria has housing challenges, but added that housing challenges are universal phenomenal.

The minister told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital at the end of a capacity building workshop for Federal Controllers of lands and housing in the country.

The theme of the training is "learning and development for greater stature."

Mr. Fashola revealed that the ministry had removed the mandatory 10 percent equity contribution before accessing loan from the National Housing Funds (NHF).

He said: "First of all I don't believe that 20 million housing deficit number. Nobody has owned up to it. It is a number of no origin, I say so. So the person who did that data should come up and take ownership of it.

"But that is not to say that there is no housing challenge. We have it, every country in the world has it. Its level and degree is a function of so many things. It is perhaps, more pronounced in the urban centres as it is in the rural areas. But even in the urban centres there are still empty houses even where there is a problem of shelter.

"What we are doing is to try and complete ongoing projects that we met. We have started our own national housing programme. The idea is to design a product that Nigerians accept and can afford. One of the reasons why we have a number of empty buildings and houses is that some of these buildings are acceptable or are not affordable or both.
So we are trying to create a model that will be acceptable for the people. "Some of the other thing we are doing is to grant funding for people who contribute to the National Housing Fund (NHF) by way of mortgage. That is happening. We are improving access by reducing the amount you have to contribute. Those who wanted to borrow up to five million naira for example, their equity contribution was about 10 percent.

"We know that some people will not have N500,000 to contribute and deposit, we have removed that. They can borrow and what they should have contributed is now capitalized into what they will pay.

"That opens the door of access. You are not denied because you did not have the fund to self-contribute. We have also reduced the amount of which you are borrowing five million Naira and above from 15 percent down to about 10 percent."

On consents and title documentation, the minister said that "we are also dealing with backlogs of title documenting and transactions, such consent to transact land. This is also a barrier to access. If you cannot finish the documentation, you might probably not get the funding. If you don't have the title you might also be denied access to funding.

"So we have those backlogs of consent and certificate of occupancy (C of Os). As at April 19th this year, we signed 2,400 certificates of occupancy, we issued 1,214 consents to transact business on land.

These are things, some of which have been pending since the 1990s. We are attacking housing challenge in many fronts."

On the power to revoke the licenses of DISCOs, he said: "The power to regulate DISCOs rests with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) not in the ministry. It is a power vested by law, so the ministry cannot interfere with that power. It is a statutory power. The ministry is only saddled with policy directive which I have given in documents, letters and all of that. Don't forget that before the privatization, the ministry had well over 50,000 staff. The staff strength of the ministry is now 779."

Boko Haram invades Adamawa village, kills 26

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:06 AM PDT

Boko Haram
Twenty-six people have been feared killed and several others critically injured following a Boko Haram attack on a village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Our correspondent gathered on Tuesday that the insurgents, riding motorcycles, stormed the Kudakaya village in large numbers around 7pm on Monday.

A local vigilante member said, "Many victims fell to the attack. I saw corpses of 26 people and there are several others that were critically injured and taken to hospital."

A former chairman of the Madagali LGA, Abawu Ularamu, supported the anonymous vigilante member's account, and added, "They (Boko Haram) burnt several shops and many homes. They also stole food items. As I am talking to you now, we are living in an atmosphere of despair and agony for this attack. Over 20 people were killed while many were injured and rushed to hospital."
He said the insurgents must have arrived the community from Sambisa, a forest in neighbouring Borno State dreaded for being a hideout for Boko Haram despite its supposedly having been cleared of the insurgents by soldiers.

''There is no doubt the attackers came from Sambisa. We experience such periodic attacks from Boko Haram, who usually look for food. They are not far from us. Any slight opportunity, they may strike again," he said.

The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the attack. "Yes, I was briefed that members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have attacked the village."

Othman, however, could not confirm the casualty figure. He merely said, "I am yet to get the casualty figure but security operatives were deployed and are on the top of the situation.''

Madagali has since just before the March/April elections been frequently attacked by Boko Haram. It shares the bad luck of being haunted by the insurgents with nearby Michika LGA. Together, they are the two LGAs in Adamawa State that have been attacked by Boko Haram a number of times in the last couple of months.
