The team that went on the raid comprises the Department of Development Control, Abuja Environment Protection Board (AEPB) and the Social Development Secretariat.

When will peace return to Rivers APC?

Posted: 04 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Supporters of the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC), Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi and Senator Magnus Abe have resumed their hostilities.

Amaechi's associate, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze has alleged plans by Abe to eliminate him. The senator said the allegation was a figment of imagination. But, Eze is adamant, saying that Abe is a supporter of the governor.

Governor Nyesom Wike, on collecting his certificate of return after the controversial elections that returned him to power, offered an olive branch to his many political traducers.

In a statewide broadcast, following the announcement of the governorship election result, Wike said:

"I therefore appeal to the APC and the Minister of Transportation to join hands with us to move our dear State forward. We cannot as leaders continue to remain divided and expect Government to deliver on its responsibilities to our people.

"Let us from henceforth seek the common ground instead of allowing our differences to be exploited to retard our march to progress. I appeal to our people to eschew all acts of acrimony, criminality, unrest, and violence throughout the state."

The minister of transportation and leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi was to reiterate that point in his Easter message when he called on those who lost during the recent elections not to give up hope.

He said: "I appeal to all who truly love our dear Rivers State to join hands in building the state, irrespective of their party affiliations.

"No amount of provocation or even threats should challenge the Rivers spirit of oneness, unity and harmony in you.

"To the youths, I urge you not to see crime as an escape route from the difficult times we are going through in Rivers State today. I am confident that with resilience and prayer, you can always pull through."

However, amid the reconciliation Eze, punctured the serenity with his petition of an alleged assassination against him.

Eze, who is Amaechi's alter ego, blamed Abe, who he said was working in cahoots with Wike against Amaechi.

Eze alleged a collaboration between Abe and Wike, saying both of them worked to frustrate Amaechi and the  APC in its bid to field candidates in the recent general elections. Abe was at the head of the dissenting group within the Rivers State APC that stopped the mainstream from presenting candidates. It was a development that was heartily welcomed by Wike and the PDP.

Eze said: "Senator Magnus Abe has been angry that I exposed how he teamed up with elements within and outside Rivers State to ensure that APC in Rivers state did not field a candidate in the just concluded general elections and how he has ceaselessly castigated and impugned the personality of Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, the immediate past Governor of Rivers state and the incumbent Minster of Transportation.

Claiming that Abe has a grouse with Eze on account of his close affinity with Amaechi and President Muhammadu Buhari, he said:

"This is the same man who happened to be his benefactor and mentor. I have been severally threatened by the Senator and his boys over my defense of the Minster and my exposing their plots against him by teaming up with PDP elements within and outside Rivers State to promote the candidates of PDP in the last elections including even the presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar all because of a desperate hope of making Atiku's ministerial cabinet."

Trainee aircraft crash lands, delays Ahmed flight

Posted: 04 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Trainee Aircraft
Trainee aircraft of the Kwara state-owned International Aviation College (IAC), Ilorin has reportedly crash landed at the airport runway.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, affected Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed's flight.

The governor, who was said to be returning from his Abuja trip, and his wife were said to have been delayed as a result of the incident for about three hours before arriving at the airport.

His convoy stationed at the airport around 2:22pm waiting for his arrival from Abuja airport, had to wait until the airspace was reopened and the governor's chartered aircraft landed at the airport at exactly 5:35pm.

The Diamond plane No.5N BNH with two pilots onboard crashed landed at exactly 11:05am without any casualty.

It was, however, gathered that the staff of the IAC, including the rector and some of the airport workers, had evacuated the aircraft from the runway in order to reopen the airspace for flight operations.

It was gathered at the airport that the aircraft might have experienced gear problem, adding that the back tyres refused to pullout when the pilot was trying to land on the runway.

When contacted, the Airspace Manager of Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) at the airport, Engineer Balogun Abiodun, said that he was not authorised to talk on the incident as a civil servant.

Also, the Rector of the Aviation college Benedict Adeyileke, an engineer, declined comment when contacted.

It was also gathered that the aircraft was towed to the Aviation College before the airspace was reopened around 4:00pm for flight operations.

NDLEA arrests Saudi-bound septuagenarian, other for alleged drug trafficking

Posted: 04 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) have arrested 72-year-old Mohammed Hamza and Kamisu Mohammed, 25, for attempting to ferry illicit drugs from Kano to Saudi Arabia.

According to the MAKIA NDLEA Commander, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, Hamza, who hails from Gwaranduma village, Daura in Katsina state was arrested on April 24 at the screening point, while trying to board an aircraft to Saudi Arabia.

He said further investigations, which led to the arrest of Kamisu Mohammed, revealed that the 72-year- old, a stark illiterate was not aware that drugs were planted inside his luggage.

"In fact, the drug peddlers told the old man that they were sponsoring him to perform lesser hajj in the Holy Land.

"They brought him to Kano from Katsina and lodged him in a hotel for three days during which they planted tramadol inside his luggage, unknown to him.

"When our officers discovered the illicit drugs from his bag, upon interrogation, he told us where he was coming from.

"Immediately, we deployed our officers inside the town and Kamisu Mohammed was apprehended."

He added: "The interesting twist on this very case is that the same Kamisu Mohammed was arrested last year for planting drugs inside the luggage of two women, though the women were his partners in crime, unlike the 72-year old man who didn't know why they were sending him to Saudi Arabia.

"This very Kamisu is on bail over that very case of last year. To show that he is serial criminal, this time when he was arrested, he tried to change his name because the name he gave us last year was Kamisu Safiyanu and this time he told us that his name is Kamisu Mohammed. He is still in our custody and will soon be re-arraigned in court."

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has condemned the incessant killings and abduction of school officials by armed bandits in Zamfara state and other parts of the country.

Dr Mike Ike-Ene, the Secretary-General of the NUT made the condemnation in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, describing it as `alarming and worrisome'.

According to Ike-Ene, the Union is deeply concerned over the rising insecurity in some parts of the North, urging the Federal Government to fashion out an agenda to help check the trend for peaceful coexistence.

The secretary-general, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government to do all it could to secure the release of the abductees and ensure total security of both students and teachers across the country.

Yemi Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said over 20,000 traders have so far benefited from the TraderMoni and MarketMoni scheme in Anambra state.

Osinbajo spoke at the palace of the Traditional Ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, during his visit to the state to promote the TraderMoni and MarketMoni at Eke-Awka Market in Awka and Ochanja Market in Onitsha.

He noted that the scheme had practically gone around the country, with some receiving the MarketMoni.

He explained that it was a Federal Government project where microcredits were provided to the lowest in the rank of the trading value chain.

According to him: "Many of them are not given such facility or loan because nobody is sure that they will pay back or not.

"Only the Government can guarantee that kind of facility and it is the Bank of Industry (BOI) that actually administers the loan."

The Vice President also expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the Federal Government's Home-Grown-School-Feeding programme in the state.

"As a matter of fact, we visited a lady in Awka, one of the cooks, who happened to be best cook of the programme in the community," he added.

He commended Achebe for his leadership style not just as the Chairman of the South-East Traditional Rulers Council but also an individual, whose statements were conciliatory rather than divisive.

He reaffirmed Federal Government commitment to ensure that the country remain united and that all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation regard themselves as one.

While inspecting the Second Niger Bridge, he reassured on Federal Government commitment to completing the project and the access roads.

He said the government insisted on completing the project in view of its economic benefit to the zone and the entire country.

Osinbajo explained: "The Second Niger Bridge is among the five projects where money has actually been set aside under a Presidential funding initiative to ensure completion.

"So, we have no fears that it will be completed as promised and scheduled.

"We are all brothers regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.

"We want to make sure that even in terms of execution of projects, we are fair and just, which is the commitment that the president has made.

"The President is committed to ensuring that he brings this to fulfillment."

Gov. Willie Obiano, lauded the Federal Government's TraderMoni and MarketMoni initiatives, saying they would encourage the culture of repayment of loans and ensure prosperity of traders.

He further commended the Federal Government's zeal towards the ongoing Second Niger Bridge and the completed Zik Mausoleum.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe, stressed the need for the federal government to set up a Board of Trustees to manage the affairs of Zik Mausoleum.

The monarch said the Federal Government's TraderMoni and MarketMoni initiatives should also be extended to local markets in Onitsha, noting that they contribute to the economy.

"Ochanja Market has become a kind of international market of sort, but then we have our own local market women, who also need to benefit from these initiatives," he said.

The VP was accompanied on the visit by the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, Sen. Andy Uba (APC-Anambra South) and Chief George Muoghalu, the National Auditor of APC, among others.

‘Prostitutes’ Arrested In Abuja Narrate How They Were Raped By Policemen Who Wore ‘Pure Water Sachets’ As Condoms

Posted: 03 May 2019 08:56 AM PDT

Abuja Prostitutes

Some of the alleged prostitutes convicted by a mobile court in Abuja, for alleged prostitution, have spoken out about how they were raped by some of the policemen who arrested them — some without condoms and some wearing improvised "pure water sachets" as protection.

Sixty-five women were arrested in several parts of the city between Wednesday and Friday last week, with Gajere Danjuma Tanimu, spokesman of the Police in Abuja, saying the ladies "were hanging around night clubs".

Majority of the arrests were made in Aminu Kano Crescent, Gwarimpa, and Katampe extension by members of a Joint Task Force.

However, speaking at a media briefing by activist Dorothy Njemanze, the girls accused the policemen of sexual molestation. The ladies said many of the alleged rapists were policemen attached to Utako, Life Camp and Gwarimpa police stations.

"They picked us from Banex; when they picked us from Banex, they took us to Utako," one of the girls said.

"But the police station was empty; there was no policeman inside, so they told us to pull off. When we pulled off, they started… some of us they used condoms, some of us they didn't use."

Another lady said she was raped by policemen when she could not pay the money they demanded in exchange for her release.

"I was held down by three policemen while one of them raped me; he didn't wear a condom. We were three in all that were raped by the same policemen," she said.

"The three of us were all brought out of the van and raped by the policemen because we had no money to give them. We were raped behind the National War College. The other girls were also raped by two others; one of them used a pure water sachet as condom but the other one did not."

Meanwhile, both the Police and the Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Development Association (FCTDA) have acknowledged the allegations against the policemen.

"The Social Development Secretariat and the FCTA is a responsible administration that looks into the welfare of the residents of the FCT," said Sunday Shaka, Public Relations Officer of the SDS.

"That somebody is compromising the law does not give advantage to an enforcement agent to begin to abuse them. This accusation is already being investigated. Our team is well trained and they have been warned against such an act. They are all aware that if any of them is been caught to have abused these persons, such a person will be dismissed and persecuted."

Similarly, Tanimu, the Police spokesman, said the allegations had been brought to the notice of the Commissioner of Police, and they were being investigated.

Posted: 03 May 2019 07:03 AM PDT

Mobile App for SARB
A mobile app developed for the Reserve Bank has won an International Association of Currency Affairs Award. Shortlisted amongst digital banking platforms from the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of Australia, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) currency mobile app was named the Best Banknote Public Education program, website, or app.

Developed and launched alongside the introduction of the commemorative Madiba banknotes series in 2018, the mobile app was developed to drive awareness and education on the various features of the South African banknotes, demonstrating the design, security, technical and quality elements using augmented reality technology.

The app was created for SARB by local animation, gaming, and augmented reality studio Sea Monster, which worked with SARB to develop the app over a three-month period following a rigorous tender and evaluation process.

Says Sea Monster CEO Glenn Gillis: "We're thrilled that SARB elected to go with a local gaming and animation studio, not assuming that only international companies can deliver at this level. SARB used its procurement rules and budget to foster local innovation and creativity. So often we see local corporates and government using procurement processes as an excuse not to innovate and this wasn't the case here at all. SARB's confidence in the abilities of the Sea Monster team has clearly been validated through this award."

"The app encourages users to explore, learn and discover everything about South African banknotes and can be used with the commemorative banknotes and the Mandela series banknotes," says Lebo Lekoma, Sea Monster head of client services.

The mobile app features augmented reality, video, audio of Nelson Mandela's voice, and a game designed to teach cash handlers how to identify genuine banknotes.

Says Lekoma: "The app showcases the full gamut of what can be done using different types of media, augmented reality, animation and games to deliver on a single business outcome."

The International Association of Currency Affairs is a non-profit association of central banks, finance ministries, mints and suppliers dedicated to making cash the best that it can be. IACA's Excellence in Currency Awards are designed to promote and reward excellence in the industry. Nominations are voted on by member delegates/companies and handed out at the Currency Conference.

Fortinet continues efforts to close the Cyber Skills gap

Posted: 03 May 2019 06:59 AM PDT

Fortinet
Fortinet recently announced it continues to train and educate in a bid to close the cybersecurity skills gap by rolling out even further expanded training and education initiatives.

Recent additions to the company's education and training programming include additional Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) Institute cloud certifications and the offering of its cybersecurity awareness training –at no cost – for individuals or organisations seeking to deploy a cybersecurity awareness training programme.

"This unprecedented shortage in the cybersecurity workforce has resulted in security operations teams who are overworked and understaffed and it continues to benefit our cyber adversaries. Fortinet is more than a technology company; we're also a learning organisation. Fortinet is dedicated to closing the cyber skills gap and goes well beyond providing training on products and solutions as part of our commitment to deliver a response to the growing global cybersecurity threat," says Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO at Fortinet.

The cyber skills gap

A 2019 Gartner survey shows the global talent shortage is now the top emerging risk facing organisations. The expansion of the digital marketplace has generated more jobs than the current supply of security professionals can meet. A problem of scale; there is currently not an efficient way to create skilled security practitioners at the same rate. Unfortunately, there are not enough skilled humans available to properly plan, manage, integrate, and optimize security devices, strategies, and protocols. For example, according to a recent workforce development survey, 59% of organisations have unfilled cybersecurity positions, with Frost & Sullivan forecasting a shortfall of 1.5 million by 2020.

Fortinet continues the commitment to bridge the cyber skills gap

In today's global cybersecurity threat landscape, education is crucial to the success of organisations. Creating and executing a strategy with a wide scope can be a daunting task, but this is precisely the mandate and strategy of the Fortinet NSE Institute. The Fortinet NSE Institute was created to provide broad-based training that arms participants with a foundational understanding of the threat landscape, as well as the cybersecurity fundamentals and skills to implement strategies and technical concepts that are in high demand. While the Institute's flagship NSE Training and Certification programme has issued nearly 200,000 certifications, it is equally focused on education programmes such as the Fortinet Network Security Academy programme for high schools, colleges and universities, the FortiVets programme that facilitates the transition of exceptional military veterans into the cybersecurity industry by providing professional networking, training, and mentoring, as well as free publicly available awareness training that can be accessed by any company wishing to deploy an internal cybersecurity awareness programme for employees.

Cybersecurity training & education milestones:

There are now over 140 academies in more than 50 different countries.
Fortinet has provided nearly 200,000 NSE certifications, building a skilled workforce that will be recognized in the industry as an elite group of security professionals.
The company recently made public cybersecurity awareness training NSE 1 and 2, whereby these free offerings are now available to the public at large. For example, any Security Operations (SecOps) team seeking to deploy a cybersecurity awareness training programme now has an easy and no-cost way to get started.
Fortinet introduced the NSE 7 Cloud certification, consisting of two training courses, "Public Cloud Security" and "Private Cloud Security," and are both being offered as part of the training schedule at this year's Fortinet Accelerate conference, held in Orlando from April 8 – 11, 2019.
During the past year, the number of NSE8 certifications awarded has doubled, a certification designation that identifies a candidate's comprehensive knowledge of network security design, configuration, and troubleshooting for complex networks.
The Fortinet Fast Track Programme, launched at the company's 2018 Accelerate conference, now has over 8,000 participating partners.
There has been an average of 300 – 600 student sessions around the world per week, based on recent company data.

Addressing the skills gap at scale

In addition to the established company-led training and education programmes, a comprehensive training and education strategy must include strategic partnerships within government, academia and NGOs, such as Fortinet's strategic relationships with organization such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) and its Centre for Cybersecurity, the Global Threat Alliance, CompTIA, and various university research programmes. Fortinet will continue its efforts to broadly and globally collaborate, innovate and develop powerful global solutions to reduce global cyber attacks, contain current and future cyber attacks, and deter cybercrime.

South West support for Buhari, wise, progressive – Group

Posted: 03 May 2019 06:51 AM PDT

Muhammadu Buhari
An Osun State-based social group, Ifesowapo Kajose Society, has saluted the South West geopolitical zone for supporting President Muhammadu Buhari, and his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to return to power.

The group described the resolve of the South West to work with other zones to actualize the second term in office for Buhari and Osinbajo, as wise and progressive.

In a statement by its President, Mr Samuel Jegede, the group said when it is time for South West to provide national leadership for the country the zone will count on other zones for support and return the goodwill it has established over the years.

According to him, the six states, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun Ondo and Ekiti that make up the South West have the resources to lead Nigeria.

However, he cautioned Ogun State out of the six states in the South West to step aside when it is time for the zone to produce the nation's leader because "it has benefited more than the rest in the past and therefore, as a matter of equity and equality only Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and the Ekiti States must have a shot at the presidency."

Congratulating Buhari for returning to power in the second term, Jegede advised that he must not allow himself to be distracted from focusing on the myriads of challenges facing Nigeria, including insecurity, economy, energy among others and must proffer solutions to them without further delay.

He commended the All Progressives Congress for providing exemplary government and good governance in Osun, Ekiti and Lagos States.
