Burna Boy is the Best International act in 2019 at the 19th BET Awards

Posted: 25 Jun 2019 12:30 AM PDT

In the early hours of June 24, 2019, Nigerian superstar capped off a superb 18 months by the award for Best International Act at the BET Awards 2019

Burna Boy
Over the past 18 months, Burna Boy has set himself up for this moment.

The ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.

His eloquent language expert and academician mother, Bose Ogulu, also known in Nigerian pop culture as Mama Burna accepted the award on his behalf. The award comes after the release of his latest single, 'Anybody' which looks set to be his third straight hit of 2019.

As things stand, Burna Boy looks set to have the impressive bragging rights of owning two years in a row - an award abstractly bestowed by Nigerian pop culture commentators. The last Nigerian act to have two years in a row was Wizkid in 2011/2012.

In totally unrelated but equally pungent manner, the man is dating beautiful UK rapper, Stefflon Don - he really is winning at this life thing.

How did Burna Boy get here?
2017
2017 was one of those years that Burna Boy didn't drop a project of any kind. In most years preceding 2017 and most years after 2017, Burna Boy either dropped an EP, an album or a mixtape.

All he did in 2017 was kill features like Airboy's 'Ayepo (Remix,' Phyno's 'Link Up' and 'Gbefun One Time' by Skales. The year undeniably went to DMW boss, Davido, but Burna set himself up.

One thing stood out for 2017; it was when Burna Boy slowed down his penchant for self-destructive antics. The final straw was the infamous matter of Mr. 2kay vs. Burna Boy.

Outside and Ye
Though Burna's talent has always been obvious, he's always been the slightly ubiquitous and forgettable. While mentioning premier Nigerian music talent, the names Davido and Wizkid made the rounds - even Tekno, at one point.

But when the first quarter of 2018 rolled around, Burna Boy dropped his third studio album, Outside and the heatwave initialized. His map couldn't be traced. The album became an instant fan-favourite during a period Nigerians needed quality albums from their faves.

Although the album's true quality still polarizes opinions in hushed tunes, its impact can simply not be overstated. On the album was the Phantom-produced smash hit, 'Ye.' The song topped a list of top songs of 2018 by Okayplayer and made several other year-end lists for publication like Passion Weiss.

The song was so huge and psychedelic in Nigeria that a few Nigerian youngins jokingly pitched it as the new Nigerian national anthem. While it only gained traction in foreign market after a mix-up with Kanye West's album of the same name on streaming platforms, that traction seemed destined - on its own, the song was that good.

Strategic collaborations

An oft-unspoken key part of Burna Boy's journey over the past 18 months was his feature on American Rock Band, Fall Out Boy's seventh studio album, M A N I A. The album came just seven days before of Burna's Outside.

He was the only feature entire album and delivered a great verse on the very alternative rock song, 'Sunshine Riptide.'

On his album, Outside, he also featured Lily Allen on the song, 'Heaven's Gate.' The afro-fusion act also featured on 'All My Life' by dance music supergroup and created 'Steel and Copper, an EP with DJDS.

These collaborations has aided Burna's upward trajectory into different markets and demographics. Due to his versatility, he became possibly Nigeria's most attractive collaboration option for foreign acts who craved a genuine presence on their songs.

He wrapped it up with a feature on 'Location,' a track off Psychodrama, British rapper, Dave album.

String of hits
'Ye' was the biggest Nigerian song of 2018. Burna followed it three more smash hits, 'Gbona,' 'On The Low' and 'Killin Dem' featuring Zlatan - which is largely a 2019 song.

Although Burna got mobbed at shows by inner-city Nigerian youth through 2018, 'Killin Dem' was a strategic collaboration that further endeared him to the Nigerian streets.

With an imminent album, African Giant, Burna has also added 'Dangote' and 'Anybody.'

Coachella

While Burna's more unsavoury side and ruinous megalomania threatened to ruin his moment on the global stage, he still managed to perform commendably on two weekends Coachella.

His unresponsive crowd during both performances might have confirmed his pointless megalomania to his face that his name is deserving of nothing more than small fonts, but his performance was still a watershed moment for contemporary African music.

JUST IN: President Buhari Asked To Sack Kyari By APC Stakeholders

Posted: 24 Jun 2019 10:26 AM PDT

APC group

A group under the aegis of Concerned APC National Stakeholders (CANS), members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),  have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Abba Kyari, his chief of staff.

CANS members stormed Defense House, an Annex of Presidential Villa in Maitama on Monday, June 24. to register their demand.

They specifically asked President Muhammadu Buhari to take full control of government from the hands of his lieutenants as he starts his second term administration, Daily Trust reports.

Some of the placards they carried had different inscriptions such as 'Abba Kyari Must Go', 'PMB Must Take Charge of the Government', 'We Need Fresh Ideas, Not Recycling Men and Women Who Have Spent Over 40 Years in Government', and 'Hardwork Must Be Rewarded' among others.

Dr Symeon Chilagorom, the convener of the group argued that Nigerians elected President Buhari and not Mamman Daura, Ismaila Funtua, and Abba Kyari,.

He insisted that Nigerians would not accept the repeat of the first term and consequently called on Buhari to take the wheel of the Nigerian ship.

The Rock Reacts to Being a Category on 'Jeopardy'

The Rock Reacts to Being a Category on 'Jeopardy'
Being a clue on Jeopardy is a true honor and something that gets even the most famous of celebrities excited. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had exactly that reaction this week when he saw that the long-running game show had dedicated an entire category of questions to his movie career.

"Ill take the entire Mr. Dwayne Johnson category for the MFn win, Alex," he wrote in an Instagram post, where he shared the clip. He jokingly added: "I finally proved Im a brilliant cookie by answering more than two Jeopardy questions correctly. I just shook my head, laughed and said no fucking way, how cool is that!? when I found out I have my own Jeopardy category. I've come a long way, my friends."

The first question referred to Johnson's role as Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious franchise (a character who will be appearing in spinoff Hobbs & Shaw with Jason Statham in August). The next was about earthquake action movie San Andreas, and the next was all about his Central Intelligence co-star and long-time friend Kevin Hart. However, players were stumped by the final question about his acting debut in The Mummy Returns, in which Johnson was still billed as The Rock. He played the Scorpion King in a cameo role which eventually turned into a standalone movie and a series of sequels.

And as is to be expected from one of the nicest guys in show business, Johnson made sure to include a message of support in his post to Jeopardy host Alex Trebeck, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March. "And stay strong Alex Trebeck," he said. "Youre an inspiration and legend - keep fighting."

Tattoo Artists Reveal the Designs They Hate Inking On Customers

Tattoo Artists Reveal the Designs They're Sick and Tired of Doing for Customers
Tattoos have been used as a form of self-expression for centuries, and what you choose to have permanently inked onto you body says a lot about who you are as a person. Turns out, a lot of tattoo artists think your choice of design is uninspired, to say the least. In a thread on Reddit , tattooists are sharing the popular requests they get from customers that they are bored of doing.

Tattoos, like everything else, go through different fashions and fads. In the United Kingdom, one artist recalls spending an entire summer tattooing pocket watches surrounded by roses onto people. "The worst part is when the customer says they want one they follow with, 'I've got an idea to make it special and unique to me'. And I'd say, 'you want the time your baby was born don't you,' and they'd say 'oh my god, how did you know?'"

In fact, trying to make anything "unique" is trickier than most customers think. "I'm from an island and fuck is it brutal trying to make nautical sleeve tattoos "unique" when every fifth person has one," reads one comment. Trying to convince someone that they probably don't want a tattoo of a word in Chinese or Japanese is also tricky.

The trend for timepieces has since been replaced by photorealistic depictions of lions wearing crowns, for guys who want to feel like kings. Another popular choice is silhouettes of forests around forearms, which one artist called "the new tribal tattoo."

The most commonly cited source of frustration on the thread was the infinity symbol: bonus points if the infinity sign includes a feather, or a word like "believe". Bird silhouettes, the Deathly Hallows symbol from Harry Potter, and variations on "live, laugh, love" all fall into this category, which one artist describes as "basically anything from Pinterest."

However, an apprentice recalls some pragmatic advice their mentor gave them: "Thats your job security. Youll always have girls coming in for the most basic tattoos, and no matter how tired you get of them, theyll pay your bills."

This is why revenge cheating on your unfaithful partner isn't a bad idea

Posted: 24 Jun 2019 06:30 AM PDT

This is why revenge cheating on your unfaithful partner isn't a bad idea
Revenge cheating aka retaliatory infidelity is one of the ways to deal with an unfaithful partner and this is why it's worth considering.

People react to cheating differently.
For some, the automatic thing to do is get out regardless of excuse or possible justification the cheater may want to come up with. These people are all about avoiding a repeat performance owing to the belief that when someone cheats once, they never stop doing so.

Proponents of this idea believe that any remorse expressed by the cheating partner at that time is only being done because he or she was caught. If they weren't caught, they'd just continue in their philandering ways.

Even for those who leave, they could either do so quietly or after hurting the cheat in some way as a way of getting their own pound of flesh… kinda.

There's one more way to deal with cheating and that's revenge cheating aka retaliatory infidelity.

What this means, as the name literally states, is that a partner goes on his or her own cheating spree after discovering that a partner has been messing around town. It is pretty much a way of saying 'while I want to remain in this relationship, I want to go out and sample other people just as you have done.'

One of the easiest, most obvious things that has been said against revenge cheating is that two wrongs don't make a right, and that the decision to go sleep with another person just to get back at a cheating partner only distresses the fabric relationship further.

The strain put on the relationship by the initial cheating should have been enough, they say. An eye for an eye will make the world go blind, they add.

Revenge cheating isn't that bad

Dr. Jacqueline Olds, a psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts says one of the reasons why revenge cheating is worth considering is for the restoration of parity and balance in the relationship.

"One is so the aggrieved party does not feel so aggrieved because they made things equal," she explains. "It may make them feel as if they have given a person a taste of their own medicine.

"Another is that sometimes it allows each person to get the sense of feeling wronged out of their system, and often they both find out that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the pasture."

In an odd sense, if a partner cheats and the offended partner rashly decides to go on their own vengeful frolick of infidelity, it could make them see for real that what's out there is nothing compared to what they both have, and that pissing it away is not particularly a wise move.

Just as cheating has the paradoxical ability to make partners become better lovers, revenge cheating may just be as great.

Must you like your mother-in-law to have a great marriage?

Posted: 24 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Must you like your mother-in-law to have a great marriage?
Can you have a great marriage without being cool with your mother-in-law?

As with everything that is based on opinion, there are always going to be two sides and differing perspectives. We took the liberty of examining both sides of the coin below:

Yes, you have to!

Many women often get this wrong, but it is both unfair and unwise to approach a relationship with your mother-in-law from a place of resentment and rivalry without even meeting her yet!

When you do this, you take away the potential to begin on a good note with her and that could taint your relationship forever. You should even count yourself fortunate if that does not end your relationship with her son.

Some mothers-in-law are really great people who do not fit the mould of the bad mothers-in-law that is often painted in the media.

If you come with an open mind and she turns out to be a terrible person, then you can hold your head high for having tried. It is not your fault that she is unlovable.

If, on the other hand, she's a nice person, then it'll be easy to love her and you should not withdraw from creating a bond with such person as that would be immensely favourable for you!

No, you don't have to

Some other mothers-in-law are not that nice. Some of them are judgmental, aloof and unfair in their assessment of the woman their son wishes to marry.

If this is the kind of woman your man's mum turns out to be, it will be a little difficult to love her as she'll frustrate every or most of the attempts you make and it's OK to not kill yourself trying to love her.

However, you cannot disrespect her. Never ever.

Being an unfair human does not change her position as your spouse's mother and even if it's impossible to love her, she forever deserves nothing but respect and anything short of that at anytime may have far-reaching consequences on your relationship with her son.

Having said that, men owe the duty of protecting their wives and girlfriends from their mums' outrageous standards and demands.

Since they cannot deny their mums because of a woman, if that woman is important, they'll have to teach their mums to respect the other important woman in their lives.

Also it goes without saying that your man owes your parents the same level of respect you bestow on his parents.

Ciara, Teyana Taylor, and Iman cover Essence's July-August issue with their artistic presence

Ciara, Teyana Taylor, and Iman cover Essence's July-August issue with their artistic presence
These three amazing women join forces for an extra special triple cover which has a distinctly Afrocentric vibe as they celebrate being successful black women in their respective industries.

ESSENCE magazine is known for some iconic magazine covers featuring strong black leads and their latest issue is no different as they've enlisted the likes of gorgeous singers, Ciara and Teyana Taylor and of course, legendary supermodel Iman for a #BlackGirlMagic packed July/August issue which celebrates the theme 'tribe'. The spread will highlight the ladies excelling in their respective careers and daily lives and they share how women of colour can really have it all.

Stunning Somalian supermodel Iman is celebrated for her philanthropy and mogul status. Before Fenty Beauty, their was IMAN, her wildly successful makeup range geared towards representing women of colour. At the age of 63, Iman still manages to look timeless and exquisite (proving that black really don't crack), as she continues to set an example for young black women everywhere. In the interview, Iman says, "When I came on the scene, I was catering to women of all skin colors. Regardless of what hue you are, as long as you are a woman with skin of color, whether you are Asian, Latina or African, I opened that gate. And Fenty knocked the gate out."

For Ciara's gorgeous cover, she wears waist-length faux locks and speaks on the power of prayer and faith. Ciara's prayer has been well-documented as she attributes it to finding her near-perfect husband Russell Wilson. Speaking to ESSENCE about the strength of her faith, Ciara says, "My faith has carried me through every challenge and triumph. When I was younger and wanting things to happen when I wanted them to happen, I could never have imagined that 15 years later I'd be having the time of my life."

Speaking on how she keeps her enviable physique and why it's important to put your health first, Cici says, "I'm trying to keep getting better, make health-conscious decisions and be the best mom and wife I can be. No matter how much success you have, I believe there's always an opportunity to grow and learn something new. And I'm keeping my sexy up too."

Teyana also gets a special cover, and speaks on how her life has transformed since giving birth to her adorable baby girl Junie. Teyana explains that's if there's one thing she wants to instill in her daughter, it's the idea of unshakable confidence and the idea that she can do anything she puts her mind to. "I'm just teaching her early: 'You are beautiful, you are smart, you are magic,' " she explains. Through her relationship with her husband, Taylor is also showing the power of commitment, teaching her daughter that "love is important."

ESSENCE magazine covers Teyana Taylor wearing veteran Nigerian designer Odio Mimonet

Posted: 24 Jun 2019 04:30 AM PDT

ESSENCE magazine covers Teyana Taylor wearing veteran Nigerian designer Odio Mimonet
We will never tire of seeing Nigerian designers blossom on the global stage and this Odio Mimonet feature is no different.

The latest issue of ESSENCE magazine celebrates three amazing women, Teyana Taylor, Ciara and supermodel, Iman. The theme centers around purpose-driven women of colour and finding one's tribe with the styling leaning heavily on Afrocentrism. What better way to promote that than by using African designers. ESSENCE Fashion Director Marielle Bobo was inspired to draw from the diffusion line of established Nigerian designer, Odio Mimonet. The diffusion line, Mimi, was inspired by the relaxed Gidi girl who wants her style to be easy and stylish yet overtly urban and in touch with her roots.

It was an inspired choice for musician Teyana Taylor who is an artist that is truly coming into her own. Honing her craft whilst balancing marriage and motherhood, Teyana is striving to have it all whilst looking good too. She is the embodiment of the 'Mimi' girl, a globe-trotting go-getter who does it all the a dash of style.

The petite star is pictured on the cover wrapping herself in a standout piece from the collection, a tribal-style, multi-coloured kimono. She stares intensely at the camera clutching her Mimi piece and wearing little else, showing off the physique that has made many a woman envious.

Speaking on the cover, Odio Oseni, Creative Director of the brand writes, "So so honoured to be able to be a part of this beautiful experience. Black, bold and beautiful couldn't be better summed up by the amazing cover girls of the ESSENCE summer issue."

Also spotted inside the issue is singer Ciara looking regal in a beaded Ankara piece, also by Odio Mimonet. Ciara, who sports waist-length dreadlocks for the editorial, shows off her incredible figure in a form-fitting dress by the designer. The heavily embellished pieces have become somewhat synonymous with the designer who is known for transforming simple Ankara material into nothing short of works of art.

The Odio Mimonet brand is one of the most established Nigerian brands in our fashion ecosystem, leaning heavily on its quality and attention to detail. The brand manages to combine the opulence of African culture with innovative and modern design, creating an identity that is truly unique.

Creative Director, Odio Oseni, graduated from Yaba College of Technology and went on to cement her style credentials at the prestigious London College of Fashion. Intent on infusing her love of art with fashion, Odio began her career creating wearable pieces of art and was a pioneer for authentic couture pieces in Nigeria with the focus being on the tradition of creating exclusive, custom-fitted clothing which is an integral part of the brand. Each piece is lovingly crafted using the highest- quality fabric and materials with painstaking attention paid to each detail right from ideation right through to the hand-finishing which is done by the hands of skilled artisans who have worked for the brand for years.

Though we may be well versed with designers such as Odio, the world is still waking up to the enormous wealth of design talent in Africa. This ESSENCE feature is fantastic exposure and undoubtedly, just the tip of the iceberg for designers such as Odio Mimonet to display their talents on an international platform. International stylists, creative directors and industry insiders are pulling from our source more and more so don't be surprised to see more of our amazing talents popping up.

Slimcase says he used to earn N15k as a factory worker

From factory to studio, Slimcase narrates what he went through to become a music star
Slimcase says he used to be a menial worker at a factory where he was earning N15,000 before he became a superstar.

Every artiste has a story about how they rose to stardom and for Oluwafemi Oladapo, popularly known as Slimcase, it's a story of a menial worker turns superstar.

The singer in an interview published by Punch on Saturday, June 22, 2019, spoke on how he rose to become music star.

Slimcase said he used to work in a factory and also had to trek sometimes to work to save some money for studio sessions.

He said, "I faced a lot of challenges in my career, especially when it had to do with money. I had a big dream but I had little money.

"I used to be a factory worker and my salary was N15, 000. I am the first born of my family and out of this little money, I still had to save about N8,000 for my studio sessions, I had to trek a lot to achieve this.

"At a point, my parents and siblings put pressure on me to get another job and stop wasting my time doing music. I thank God I never listened to them because I am now the breadwinner of my family."

Slimcase also spoke about the inspiration behind his kind of music.

He said, "Alcohol inspires the kind of music I do; drunken people inspire me a lot even though I have never been drunk.

"I am a very good actor, so people tend to believe me when I act as if I'm drunk."

From the street of Ikorodu, Slimcase rose to stardom in 2017 when he dropped a single titled 'Oshonzodi'.

Nicki Minaj set to marry childhood friend
Rapper, Nicki Minaj has confirmed she is set to marry Kenneth Petty after revealing they have obtained a marriage license.

The rapper and Kenneth have been dating for over seven months, when they went official with their relationship on Instagram.

She has since spoken about the decision to get the license with her 'husband', (which she called him) while talking about their evening routine on her Queen Radio show on Apple Music's Beats 1 radio.

'We did get our marriage license. I think I have what I was striving for, just happiness.

'It was so hard to get to a happy place. Now that I'm there, I don't want to compromise that for anyone or anything,' she said, according to Metro.

Nicki referred to her other half as 'husband' when she said Kenneth gives her a loving foot rub every evening after her shower, but admitted that they were not yet legally married.

'Every night when I get out of the shower, my husband takes this really good lotion that we just bought, and he massages my feet, and rubs them, and he rubs each toe individually, and the heel, and the ball of my foot, and he does it all.

It's just so sexy,' she said.

Runtown – Banning Sniper does not tackle why people commit suicide

Posted: 24 Jun 2019 02:00 AM PDT

Runtown
The federal government had announced on Thursday that it has put a ban on the sale of small bottle-packaged sniper.

According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, the ban became necessary because sniper has been used in recent times across the country to commit suicide.

However, Nigerian musician Runtown maintains that the ban isn't the solution to ending suicide as it only tackles how people end their lives.

The musician said that government must first of all tackle the reasons, why people take their own lives before anything else.

He wrote:

"Banning Sniper only tackles HOW people commit suicide not WHY people commit suicide. It's like going to dry up the Lagos Lagoon because people use it as a tool for committing suicide. To truly curb this epidemic, we must focus on the reason WHY people do it."
