Osinbajo Denies Supervising Ruga Settlements Establishment

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:22 PM PDT

Herdsmen

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has denied supervising the Ruga settlements establishment, as against the claim by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association.

The National Livestock Transformation Plan approved by state governors under the auspices of the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, is totally different from the Ruga Settlements initiative, Laolu Akande, spokesman for Osinbajo, said in a statement, Sahara Reporters reports.

Akande said that NEC on Jan. 17, approved the plan based on the recommendations of a Technical Committee of the Council chaired by Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State.

The Vice President's spokesman, further stated that other state governors in the committee and working group of NEC were those from Adamawa, Kaduna, Benue, Taraba, Edo, Plateau, Oyo and Zamfara – mostly the frontline states in the farmer-herder crises.

"The National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) 2019-2028 is a programme to be implemented in seven pilot states of Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba and Zamfara as decided by NEC in January, being states in the frontlines of the farmer-herder crises.

"Afterwards, six other states have indicated readiness to also implement the plan; they are Katsina, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Ondo, and Edo states.

"The plan has six pillars through which it aims to transform the livestock production system in Nigeria along market oriented value chain while ensuring an atmosphere of peace and justice.

"The six key pillars include-economic investment, conflict resolution, justice and peace, humanitarian relief and early recovery, human capital development.

"Others are cross-cutting issues such as gender, youth, research and information and strategic communication. "In all, the federal government will not impose on any state government regarding its land," he said.

South-East, South-South Governors Deckare Ruga Settlements Unacceptable In Their Domains

Herdsmen

Governors from the south east and the south south zones of Nigeria, on Sunday, June 30, declared the proposed Ruga farm settlements of the federal government for herdsmen across states of the federation, unacceptable.

The governors said they were not part of the move and that they had no plans for such settlements in their zones.

Their joint decision was contained in a statement issued by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state, through his media aide, Emmanuel Uzor, in Abakaliki, Legit reports.

The statement said the south east and the south south governors were joining other political zones in the country to deny members of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) of Ruga settlement in their areas.

The statement said Umahi asked the members of MACBAN to accept anti-grazing law established by the federal government in the northern region long ago.

According to Umahi, the south east, being an agrarian region, is faced with limited landmass and cannot accommodate any Ruga settlement.

The governor further charged the federal government to follow the recommendations reached by the technical committee on farmers and herdsmen clash carved from the federal cconomic council.

"Umahi was the chairman of NEC sub technical committee on farmers and herdsmen clash and he toured the states of Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Zamfara and two other states where he made in one of his recommendations to the federal government for revamping of grazing reserve in the north where all the cattle rearers in the south will take their cattle to and rely on the grass that are grown in the south," the statement noted.

The statement added that it would work in a way that the herdsmen would bring down their cows to the south east and sell as meat while they will load the grasses which are grown in the zone in the same trailer with which they transported their animals to feed their cattle in those grazing reserves which should be made comfortable for them.

"By this herdsmen are expected to embrace anti open grazing by returning to the ranches in the north and do their business on the trade by barter basis of selling cows to the south and buying grass to feed their cows in the north," the governor said.

Try This Workout If You Want Arms Like Anthony Mackie?
Want arms like Anthony Mackie? The heir to Captain Americas shield looks seriously jacked on our cover, and no, thats not because of Super Soldier Serum. Its because Mackie, now 40, knows how to pack on size and muscle when its time for a role.

Its exactly what he did in the lead-up to the 2013 film Pain and Gain, in which he starred alongside muscleheads Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg. And his tactics for bulking up for that film were pretty simple: Lift hard and heavy. I was doing heavy lifting, and no cardio, he says. I was max repping. At the end of every set, I would max out. I was doing chest and thighs, back and tris and shoulders, and then Friday would be legs, and I would start over again. It was just constantly ripping the muscle, giving it four days to recover, and then going right back into it.

So much for all the talk you hear today about total-body workouts and high-intensity interval training. When Mackie wants to muscle up, he heads to classic bro splits, and theres a reason for that: They work! Theres a reason that the biggest, strongest guys in the world, and the guys who look like superheroes (like Mackie!) arent living their lives doing HIIT workouts. If you want to build serious muscle, you have to lift heavy and then give your muscles a break.

Training Mackie-style can help you add serious bulk and strength to your body in ways that HIIT protocols cant, which is why its the backbone of most of my own training . Itll gives you a chance to really feel each muscle, instead of just breaking some pointless sweat, and it allows you to attack a muscle instead. You need a few days of recovery between such workouts, which is why Mackie attacked only a few bodyparts (or in the case of his Fridays, a single bodypart, his legs) in any given workout. You need a plan to build your body this way, not random fitness classes.

Interested in trying a Mackie-style workout? Give this arm blast a try-and dont be surprised if it leaves you with such a good pump that you a little more like the new Captain America when the sessions done.

Directions
Do this arm workout twice a week, resting at least two days between each session. On the days in between each arm workout, train other bodyparts. Do back one day and legs the other. Heres a sample of a leg workout you might do on one day, and a chest workout you can attack on another. If you train this hard, make sure to get plenty of sleep to recover between workouts. Your sore muscles will need it.

Start every workout with some light mobility work. Open by doing 3 minutes of sit-thrus , working for 30 seconds, then resting for 30 seconds in each minute. Then do 2 30-second planks, and jump into the workout.

Dumbbell Biceps Curl

Work through the total arm countdown finisher below 3 times. This should finish off your arms. Leave the gym feeling swole.

What You Need to Know About The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
The Disney+ streaming service will launch on November 12, 2019. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is one of the original TV shows that will premiere on the network. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will reunite Anthony Mackie and Sebastian in their title roles.

The Disney+ streaming service is one of the most exciting TV and movie ventures to hit the internet in a while, and it's set to launch on November 12. Disney+ will feature content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, and the service will offer original content alongside TV and movies from the The Walt Disney Studios stable.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is one of the original shows that will premiere on Disney+, and fans are eager to learn about the new Marvel show. Here's what you need to know about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

What is The Falcon and The Winter Soldier about?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be a live-action series following Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier). The two are both friends of Steve Rogers-Captain America-and they've appeared together in films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War. While the characters have clashed in the past, the duo are friendly now-both on and off the screen .

There haven't been any specific plot points announced yet, and we also don't know where this show takes place in the Marvel timeline.

Who's in the cast of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?
Our Men's Health July/August cover star, Anthony Mackie, will reprise his role as Falcon, and Sebastian Stan will return as the Winter Soldier. Deadline reports that Daniel Bruhl and Emily Van Camp will also join the cast.

Bruhl appeared in Captain America: Civil War as Helmut Zemo, a super villain who pitted Iron Man and Captain America against each other. Van Camp played Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Carter is also known as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Agent 13. Additionally, she's Peggy Carter 's great-niece, which is why no one understands why she and Captain America kissed during Civil War...but I digress.

When will The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premiere?
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will premiere on Disney+ in August 2020. As ComicBook.com reports, Sebastian Stan confirmed that filming for the series will begin in October 2019. Some outlets have reported that the show will be a limited series or a miniseries, but Disney and Marvel haven't confirmed that.

This Hotel Workout Challenges You to Beat the Clock
Traveling for work or pleasure during the summer can be tough on your workout routine. You're not just busier than usual and less motivated to get moving-you might have trouble finding a proper place to keep up with your exercise plan, too. How many times have you checked into a hotel that promised a full "fitness center," only to find a sad little room with a single (broken) weight machine and an outdated treadmill?

If you're willing to adjust on the fly, you can still make use of that space, or anywhere else, for that matter. This bodyweight routine from trainer Charlee Atkins, C.S.C.S. gives you a chance to get a sweat in wherever you are.

"When it comes to on-the-go and travel workouts, I like to program the most #basic exercises because I know theyre effective and my clients have done them with me 1000 times, so they dont need direction to get moving," says Atkins. "Creating a smart training program is all about how you stack the workouts together to get the biggest bang for your buck, which in the case of travel, is time."

In order to make the time you're sacrificing from your travels as efficient as possible, Atkins recommends an EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute) protocol. That means you'll set a timer for a predetermined period, then perform a list of exercises in order. Once you're done with the reps, you can rest-until the next minute starts. Then you do it again, until the timer rings.

"EMOMs are an excellent training tool that combines cardio and strength," says Atkins. "Theyre especially perfect for traveling because they keep you committed to the time and encourage you to move through the exercises quickly and efficiently."

This 7-move EMOM workout is a quick way to hit every muscle in your body. All you need is yourself, a timer, and the motivation to get moving on the road.

Perform the prescribed reps of each exercise in order. Rest until the next minute starts.

Squat and Lunge Combo
10 reps

Mountain Climbers
30 reps

Push-Up Hold
15 reps

Vertical Jump
15 reps

Plank Hop-Over
30 reps

Plank-to-Pike
20 reps

Atkins suggests taking on 3 to 5 rounds total, so you're not working long-you're working hard. If you have trouble finishing the series in under a minute in the first round, cut down the reps by 5 for each exercise. Want to learn more moves from Atkins? 5 Reasons You're Suddenly Getting Chin Hair

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT

5 Reasons You're Suddenly Getting Chin Hair
You're up close and personal with a magnifying mirror doing your weekly eyebrow cleanup when you start surveying the rest of your face. You spot some surprise little visitors on your chin. Sure, you can pluck 'em. But now you're thinking, Should I be worried? Does this happen to other people? Will it come back?

Unlike Kanye, I'm not going to let you finish but rather just go right ahead and interrupt what could turn into a very unnecessary worry spiral (you're welcome). Growing the occasional chin hair or two is fairly common in women and shouldn't warrant concern.

First off, all women have some amount of chin hair in the form of thin, faint strands that you probably ID as "peach fuzz." But you may also notice random dark, coarse chin hairs from time to time, and these are also totally normal. Certain hormones-specifically androgen or other "male hormones" like testosterone-can cause you to grow some thicker and darker hairs here and there if they ever get out of balance.

Women also make these hormones, albeit at lower levels than men. Your hormones may get out of whack due to factors such as pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, among many other reasons. (And yes, you can pluck/wax/leave it be/do whatever it is you like to do with facial hair-totally a personal choice!)

But if you start to notice excessive facial hair growth that's dark and coarse, it might mean you have abnormally high levels of androgen hormones, or an increased sensitivity in your hair follicles even to normal levels of androgen hormones, explains Minisha Sood , MD, endocrinologist in New York City. This is a condition known as hirsutism, per U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Sometimes, you just don't know the cause behind hirsutism. In other cases, hirsutism is related to an underlying health issue. The conditions here are some pretty well-known culprits that often cause facial hair to go rogue.

1. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Affecting about 10 percent of women of childbearing age, PCOS is characterized by cysts that grow on the ovaries, which can prevent eggs from maturing and often cause fertility issues, according to the Office of Women's Health (OWH).

PCOS can also impact your hormone levels, leading to weight gain, irregular periods , acne, and, yup, increased hair growth. People with PCOS often notice excessive hair growth specifically in what Dr. Sood refers to as "androgen-dependent areas," like the chin. If you have PCOS , you might also experience coarse and dark hair on the abdomen, upper thighs, low back, and butt.

Sound familiar? Your best bet is to see an endocrinologist to determine what's up.

2. Ovarian or adrenal tumors
While we don't know their exact cause, growths or masses on your ovaries can actually amp up your body's production of those facial hair-causing androgen hormones. These tumors can also lead you to experience pelvic pain or pressure or irregular vaginal bleeding.

If you have all or some of these symptoms, it's time to visit your doc, who can issue the appropriate medical scans to determine if there's an ovarian growth in your body that's to blame for overproduction of testosterone. Don't worry: Most of these growths are benign, although they can be malignant (meaning cancerous) in rare cases.

Growths can also take up camp on your adrenal glands, which are small glands located on top of each kidney, according to Dr. Sood. Many of these tumors are asymptomatic, but if they are in fact producing excess hormones, you may experience other symptoms such as unexplained weight gain, easy bruising, acne, high blood pressure, high blood glucose (sugar) levels, changes in body odor, among other signs, Dr. Sood says.

See your doc if you're having any of these symptoms, so she can do a proper evaluation to determine what's going on. In some cases, surgery may be needed to remove an ovarian or adrenal tumor (even if it's benign). But on the bright side, the growth likely won't return once it's removed, according to NLM .

3. Cushing's syndrome

This hormonal disorder, a.k.a hypercortisolism, can be the result of long-term exposure to high levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by your adrenal gland, according to NLM . Cushing's syndrome can also be caused by taking corticosteroids (a type of inflammation-reducing steroid) for a prolonged period, or by an adrenal tumor.

Dr. Sood recommends talking to your endocrinologist for an adrenal evaluation, which would include imaging and blood and urine testing to check for abnormal levels of the specific hormones made by the adrenal glands.

4 . Insulin resistance or diabetes
When you're insulin resistant, your body doesn't respond properly to insulin-a hormone that helps turn sugar into energy, according to NLM . So instead, your blood sugar stays elevated, which can lead to prediabetes and diabetes. Insulin resistance can also raise the body's levels of testosterone, and thus the amount of facial and body hair you grow as well, Dr. Sood explains.

How the heck do you get a sense of whether this is you? Being increasingly thirsty, urinating more frequently, and feeling weak and fatigued are all ways your body tries to tell you it's experiencing issues related to insulin resistance. Your doc can order blood tests to determine if you have, say, diabetes . Once your body's insulin resistance is in control, there's a good chance your hair growth will return to normal.

5. Pregnancy
As you probably know, your hormones go a little haywire when you're pregnant. One shift that occurs is a rise in testosterone levels. But wait-estrogen levels also go up during pregnancy, right? Yup. So most women don't experience symptoms such as unwanted hair growth despite the turned-up male hormones, Dr. Sood says.

But (there's always a "but," isn't there?) this isn't the case for *all* women. It's pretty hard to predict exactly what pregnancy-related hormonal changes will bring on, so never shy away from calling your ob-gyn because, per Dr. Sood, a simple blood test can help determine if your chin or facial hair issue is just another bodily change from pregnancy hormones, or something else that needs to be addressed.

How to Do a Lunge the Right Way

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 05:30 AM PDT

How to Do a Lunge the Right Way
The lunge is a core training staple that can help to build strength and size in your legs, but are you sure you're even doing the exercise correctly?

For this gold standard leg move, you shouldn't settle for anything other than perfect form-especially because it's such a simple, essential movement that should serve as one of the centerpieces of your training plan. Let Men's Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. and associate fitness editor Brett Williams guide you through the move's subtleties, saving you from the bad habits that are keeping you from unlocking your fitness potential.

Before you drop down and get lunging, take note that it's extremely important to pay attention the movement here. Smacking your knee down on the ground won't just leave you scraped and bloody-you want to be much more deliberate in your steps.

Eb says: When you step forward turn your glute on, so your knee shifts slightly outward. People often have a habit of letting their knee shift toward their midline, and that's the last thing you want. The same way you push your knees out when squatting, you want to create that same motion when you lunge to protect the health of your knee in the long run.

Chest Up
Eb says: Don't let your chest fall, and don't let your upper body be a momentum-generator in the lunge. This is a leg move, and you want it to be driven by your legs, not some attempt at rocking your upper body or your shoulders, or hinging forward to get up.

Think about keeping a tight core, and keeping your shoulder blades down and in in a standard lunge; maintain that rigidity as you're lowering and standing up.

No Back Knee Slam
Eb says: There's a dynamic quality to the lunge, but this is still a move about control. Exhibit that and control your body as you lower into the lunge, making sure your back knee doesn't hit the ground or slam into it. You should be in enough control as you lower down that your back knee stops an inch from the ground.

Work in Reverse
Eb says: If you're not feeling comfortable with the forward lunge, shift to the reverse lunge, which, in many ways, is actually superior to the forward lunge. It's going to alleviate a lot of stress on that front knee, and it'll force you to be spatially aware as you step back.

And the best part about the forward lunge (and the reason I love it so much): When you stand up from it, it gives you more natural hip extension, mirroring an action that we need more of in real life.

Once you're comfortable with the movement, try out these lunge variations.

The Rock's Brutal, Brilliant Chest Day Workout, You should try it

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 05:00 AM PDT

The Rock's Brutal, Brilliant Chest Day Workout, You should try it
When The Rock deigns to record and share his workouts on social media, he rarely leaves anything in the tank. With his latest Instagram posts, the actor known as Dwayne Johnson showed off a brutal routine where he pushed himself to the edge of his limits using drop sets , a tried-and-true lifting technique that takes every shred of effort you can give and rewards you with serious muscle gains.

"Drop sets are a great way to safely take your body to its limit without risking injury, letting you repeatedly work til technical failure," says Men's Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. "The game plan is simple: You do as many good-form reps as possible, but the moment your mechanics fail, you drop to a weight you can handle to do more reps. You're challenging the muscle further without inviting the mechanical flaws that could lead to injury."

The chest day workout was filmed specifically to promo Johnson's latest Project Rock Under Armour drop-but this time around, the actor says that he took a different tack than the usual overblown marketing blitz that surround his product releases. Instead, he kept the crowds of brand workers out of his Iron Paradise gym and barred everyone but a trio of photographers and his strength and conditioning coach, Dave Rienzi , so he could bear down on the muscle building. "My gym time is scared [sic] and its a very effective and authentic process for me to keep everyone out so I can focus," Johnson wrote in one of the post's captions. "Nothing personal, its business."

In this post, Johnson burns out his chest with a machine press to Tupac and Dr. Dre blaring in the background. For the drop set, he runs down the weight. He starts with four plates on each side, pushes through his reps, then quickly removes a plate off each side before immediately getting back to the reps. He keeps working until failure, dropping the weight, and moving on until he's just pushing one plate each, alternating arms for a unilateral chest pump.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by therock (@therock) on Jun 26, 2019 at 11:26am PDT

The workout also called for a wicked cable fly session, complete with a brief hold and chest squeeze at the end of the set for extra muscle stimulation.

After the flies, The Rock moves straight to dips, which is where the drop sets really get rough. He starts with one of his favorite gym accessories, chains , for an added load. After performing reps to failure, he drops the chains. He follows those up with standard reps-but that's not the end of his drop set hell. After failure, Rienzi pushes Johnson through a final set of negative reps, counting down as Johnson strains to stay in control.

View this post on Instagram For my new IRON WILL COLLECTION campaign and photo shoot, I barred everyone from my gym while I trained. No @underarmour execs, no @sevenbucksprod @sevenbuckscr execs, no make up, grooming, no assistants etc. No one allowed except my three shooters and my strength & conditioning coach @daverienzi. My gym time is scared and its a very effective and authentic process for me to keep everyone out so I can focus. Nothing personal, its business. As always THANK YOU for making PROJECT ROCK @underarmours #1 seller worldwide. Keep it raw. #projectrock #ironwillcollection A post shared by therock (@therock) on Jun 26, 2019 at 10:50am PDT

When we talked to Rienzi about Johnson's leg day workout earlier this year , the trainer used similar principles to push the actor with a closing drop set of weighted lunges. "We're aiming for muscular exhaustion here," Rienzi said. "I'm not trying to load up where he's lunging an insane amount of weight and he's only doing 12 steps." The same goes for this chest routine, which uses Rienzi's favorite training principles, like pushing muscles to fatigue without undue stress. He does this using time under tension techniques, static holds, and negative reps to pack even more muscle building potential into the lifting sessions.

Want to use drop sets to build muscle just like The Rock? Go for it-just know that you're not going to be burning out and stripping off weight for every single move you take on. "This is an advanced technique, so use it wisely," advises MH's Samuel. "Avoid using it on every exercise in a body part workout. It's best utilized as a finisher in a workout."

Can You Eat Cherries On the Keto Diet?

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:30 AM PDT

Are Cherries Keto-Friendly?
Learning the nuances of any new diet is confusing, particularly if you're following a plan with complicated rules or a lot of restrictions. The popular Ketogenic diet can be tricky for beginners who are trying out the high-fat, low-carb lifestyle.

As a refresher, keto dieters get roughly 70 percent of their daily calories from fat in order to force their bodies into ketosis, or fat burning mode . This means only 20 percent of your daily calories can come from protein while 10 percent is allotted to carbs. Most dietitians recommend eating only 20-30 grams of carbohydrates, which makes eating many healthy foods, like fruit, difficult. For example, one medium apple has 22 grams of carbohydrates . But can you eat other fruits, like cherries?

Are cherries keto?
Generally, most fruits are high in carbohydrates because of their natural sugars. This makes it difficult to eat fruit and maintain ketosis. That said, cherries may be keto-friendly if eaten in moderation. According to the USDA, a single cup of cherries contains 22 grams of carbohydrates. Does this mean you have to deprive yourself of the antioxidant-rich fruit? Not, exactly. Eat a smaller serving if you really want to satisfy the craving. A half-cup of cherries makes it possible to enjoy the fruit and stay in ketosis, but you'll have to severely limit carbs from all other foods. Your best bet is to keep the amount to roughly one-fourth of a cup.

And cherries are a rich source of antioxidants, so you probably don't want to eliminate the fruit from your dietif you enjoy eating them. Studies show they may help reduce inflammation , exercise-induced muscle soreness and lowered blood pressure.

5 serious health conditions that can be passed down through your genes

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:00 AM PDT

This is where genetic testing really comes in handy.
Although many offer entertaining insights—curious if you're genetically predisposed to sport a unibrow or sneeze when you look at the sun?—the real potential of such testing is to reveal your likelihood for developing serious health conditions.

For example, DNA tests from Color will analyze a vial of spit you send in the mail for 30 genes for various cancers, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, both of which are linked to breast and ovarian cancers, and hereditary cholesterol.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the testing company 23andMe to tell consumers whether they have an increased genetic risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, which have no cure.

And, just last month, the FDA announced it would streamline the approval process for more tests, saying "[They] can prompt consumers to be more engaged in pursuing the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices."

In an ideal world, knowing what's lurking in your DNA would motivate you to get more mammograms or other screening exams. Or you'd get serious about taking omega-3 fatty acids or commit to daily exercise—strategies that researchers believe will delay the onset of Alzheimer's. Yet, as the applications for genetic testing expand, experts say we have the opportunity to learn more about our risk for certain diseases than we ever imagined possible.

"People are really interested in genetic testing right now. More of my patients are asking about it, and I've overhead parents chatting about it at my son's little league games," explains Bradley Patay, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California.

"This interest gives us a unique opportunity to really educate the public about the potential of genomics.

Plus, the price has been coming down, so there's some momentum to get patients engaged." (Although the new consumer tests analyze your DNA for several conditions, your doctor might need to order a specific test, which could be covered by insurance.)

In the leap to learn more about ourselves, however, it's important to know what genetics can and can't tell you. Just because you have a genetic predisposition for a disease doesn't mean you will get it, says Mary Freivogel, president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. "Your environment, family history, lifestyle habits, and even pure chance also play a role," she says.

Here, we share some genetic breakthroughs that should be on everyone's radar:

1. Heart Disease
We know that healthy lifestyle habits are linked to a lower risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. (You've heard them before: No smoking. Maintaining a healthy BMI. Exercising regularly. Eating a diet low in red meat and saturated fat.)

Yet a landmark 2016 study of more than 55,000 participants that was published in The New England Journal of Medicine discovered just how critical those habits were for people who had a genetic risk for heart disease. The participants underwent DNA testing that looked at 50 different markers for coronary artery disease. For those who tested in the highest-risk group, adhering to a favorable lifestyle brought down their risk by 50 percent.

"This is significant research that explains the genetic underpinnings of heart disease and lets patients take actions to reduce their risk," explains Patay. "In addition to changing your lifestyle, if you knew you were in the high-risk group, you might choose to take a statin medication earlier than you normally might," says Patay. "That's not a conversation doctors are routinely having with patients, but that's going to change as we learn more."

2. Colon Polyps
This might not be your idea of Sunday dinner convo, but asking who in your family has had what are called adenomatous polyps can help you know if you're at risk for colorectal cancer.

Such polyps might develop in your colon during your teen years, but become malignant as you get closer to 40. As many as one in five people who get the disease is related to someone who's had it, according to the American Cancer Society.

"People usually start getting screened for colorectal cancer at age 50, but if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, you might need to start earlier and talk to a genetic counselor," says Freivogel.

3. Celiac Disease
As the popularity of gluten-free products surged over the past decade, the world became a lot more aware of the trials and tribulations of people who suffer from celiac disease. Unlike people with intolerances who deal with temporary digestive issues after eating gluten, celiac patients who ingest the wheat protein experience serious harm to their small intestine.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, people with a first-degree relative with the disease (meaning a parent, child, or sibling) have a one in 10 risk of getting this themselves, since there are genes associated with celiac disease. Although having one or more gene doesn't necessarily mean you'll develop the disease, you shouldn't delay getting evaluated by a doctor if you also develop the classic celiac symptoms of abdominal pain or weight loss.

4. High Cholesterol
Sadly, people often only learn they have this deadly condition when a loved one has a heart attack at a young age. People with the genetic disorder called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) have dangerously high levels of LDL, or "bad cholesterol," from birth and are 20 times more at risk for early heart disease, including heart attacks and stroke, according to the FH Foundation. Genetic testing combined with a simple blood cholesterol test can lead to diagnosis and treatment with statins.

"FH is the most common genetic cause of early heart disease, but with early treatment an individual's risk can be reduced by 80 percent," says Daniel Rader, M.D., professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. "Unfortunately FH is highly undiagnosed, with 90 percent of people unaware they have the condition."

5. Depression
Researchers still have so much to learn about the genetic roots of mental conditions. Still, looking at your family history can provide clues to your blues. "Just because someone in your family has depression doesn't mean you will, but it's more likely if two or more people on the same side of your family are affected," says Freivogel.

Being mindful of your family's mental-health history might prompt you to seek treatment if you're going through a rough patch, and some genetic tests can help determine which medications you'll respond best to, according to Mayo Clinic.

5 Easy Ways to Start Building Your Self-Confidence

5 Easy Ways to Start Building Your Self-Confidence
For somebody with social anxiety, intrusive thoughts can have a really negative impact on their confidence and self-esteem. In a Reddit thread that has gone viral and garnered more than 30,000 replies, people have started sharing their best advice on how to build self-confidence. Here are the most popular things they recommend doing:

Try working out
Exercise was cited by many as a factor in improving the way they felt about themselves. "Going to the gym helped me tremendously with my self confidence and depression," wrote one commenter. Weightlifting in particular has helped me take control of my body and self image." Another commenter said: "I ended up getting a personal trainer as well and it was the best thing I ever did. My social anxiety was too bad to try navigate the gym solo. Having a guide and someone to be accountable to really keeps the motivation in check, at least for me."

Going to the gym might not seem like a great idea for a self-conscious person at first; the image of all those muscular people training can be an intimidating one. "I stuck my nose up at the gym for a long time. Thought it was only for jocks and vain people. And although many jocks go to the gym, as well as vain people, lots of average people too," one commenter said. But they soon learned the psychological benefits of training: "Huge mood booster, forces yourself into uncomfortable situations, and in the end you look better... BUT. you have to prepare yourself for it, you need to ensure you have the energy levels (eat properly before and after you go, and stay hydrated throughout the day). Or else you will go and hate it while your there as well as after. And bring music."

It's not just that working out makes you look better, which makes you feel better: the regular disciplined routine and endorphin rush can actively help people who struggle with depression and anxiety. "Running to a point of endorphin release or deadlifting really heavy helps me," said a commenter with depression. "After a good work out I don't even have repetitive, intrusive thoughts." However, they added: "The hard part is getting going to work out."

Do something that scares you
Don't worry, you don't have to take up sky-diving. Venturing outside your comfort zone can start with baby steps, like talking to somebody at a bar. "When you take steps outside your comfort zone, you teach yourself you can handle a lot more than you thought," said one commenter. "It makes it easier to face your fear and do things you want to do, which gives you confidence."

Another said they think the most important thing you can experience is the risk of rejection: "If this induces anxiety, then you can do it in a context where it doesn't matter. It helps you build up a thicker skin."

Spend some quality time solo
Other advice in the thread included getting more comfortable with being by yourself. "Go to the movies alone," suggested one comment. "Another time go out to eat alone at a restaurant that you are interested in. Do things like this regularly. It helps you be comfortable with making decisions and taking charge and it helps you be comfortable in your own skin regardless of who is around and who is looking... It forces you to be comfortable in public alone where you don't have friends to take the focus of others around you."

Put those idle hands to good use
Another comment recommended getting a constructive hobby: "Learning a new skill, then getting decently good at it such that people come to you for help. Mine is building/building repair for instance. I'm not a professional but I can think outside the box and that's helpful/impressive to people who can't. For me, it isn't other people's opinions that matter nearly as much as the feeling of being useful."

Remember: You're only human, and so is everybody else
Learning to let go of that obsession with what other people think about you was another common theme. "Just drill into your mind constantly that you are worthy, you are important, you are a perfectly valid human being who deserves to be happy and feel confident," said one person. "Force yourself to accept that no one is better than you. They might be more successful, or attractive, or whatever, but they're just a human, and you're just a human. I use that baseline for every single interaction I have."

Or, as another commenter put it: "Care about people but not what they think of you." That said, it is still important to be kind and mindful in what we say and think about other people: for all we know, they're going through exactly the same thing.

Losing Weight After 40, here is the Secret

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:00 AM PDT

Losing Weight After 40, here is the Secret
In your teens and 20s, it used to be that you could eat pizza every night for a week without a lot of pushback from your body in the form of extra pounds. In your 40s, not so much. Maybe youre even eating much better now, but weight is still accumulating.

Its usually not just due to losing muscle mass over time (more on that later). Its also this: as you get older, theres a lot of competition for your time and energy, says William Samuel Yancy, M.D., director of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center and associate professor of medicine at Duke University. That can push out healthy eating and exercise. Heres how to hack your biology and your lifestyle to lose weight after 40.

Dont force yourself to do the most popular plan
There are many eating patterns that can be used to lose weight, says Dr. Yancy. Many have evidence behind them, whether thats keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, vegan, or anything else. Interestingly, theres not as much research on what works for men as there is on women, but for men, sometimes its as simple as cutting calories or shortening the time in which you are eating to an 8- to 10-hour window a day, Kirkpatrick says. Even something as straightforward as not eating after 6 PM can make a big difference-one of her male clients who lost 150 pounds found that to be especially helpful, she says.

If you prefer a specific plan with specific rules, make sure it goes with your lifestyle, which, for most guys, gets increasingly complicated in your 40s with more responsibilities at work, with your family, and maybe even with your aging parents. Keto is going to be hard if you live a grab-and-go existence. Meal prep is going to be a challenge if youre never home long enough to cook. Dont just pick what worked for a friend; pick whats likely to work with your busy, over-40 lifestyle.

Be sober curious
Another factor I see that can help men is to take a look at drinking habits, Kirkpatrick says. Men that I counsel who cut alcohol or significantly cut back tend to lose weight more easily.

Now that the whole sober curious moment is making not drinking trendy, its easier to find alcohol-free options. Less alcohol not only means youre drinking fewer calories, it can also mean fewer late-night bowls of ramen or plates of double cheeseburgers on the way home from happy hour. Today, its also easier to maintain a social life when youre not overdrinking, since theres the new perception that youre not saying no to a beer or five; youre part of a movement.

Get stronger
Starting in your 30s, you can lose three to five percent of your muscle mass each decade if you dont stay active. Note the last part of that point: If you dont stay active. You can maintain that muscle or regain it with a regular strength routine-meaning you do moves that hit the major muscles of the body at least twice a week. A great place to start: This 3-Week Full-Body Workout Plan for Men Over 40 .

Why thats so important: The more muscle we have, the more calories we burn, says Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D.N., consultant for Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine for the Cleveland Clinic. It can be a game changer, in that it impacts metabolism in a way that allows a man to eat more. Lots of over-40 guys like HIIT, since its compressed timeframe ends up having a low impact on your schedule.

That doesnt mean you should only strength train; aerobic activity is helpful, too. But supplementing your Spin/run/row/elliptical routine with strength training is essential.

5 Reasons Your Butt Itches Like Crazy

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 02:30 AM PDT

5 Reasons Your Butt Itches Like Crazy
When that itch in the seat of your pants strikes, theres nothing you want to do more than give it a good scratch. But not only is that not the way to go about it, its also not the best way to endear yourself to polite company.

Anal itching is quite common, and for some people, it can feel incredibly frustrating, says Mitchell Bernstein, M.D., an associate professor of surgery and director in the division of colon & rectal surgery at NYU Langone Health. Some people even start scratching in their sleep, and of course, too much scratching just makes it worse .

The ailment is known as pruritus ani , meaning "itchy anus" in Latin. (Talk about a straightforward translation.) Some people have "primary" pruritus ani, which means their anus is itchy for no apparent underlying reason. Others have "secondary" pruritus ani, which means the itch comes from an anorectal condition like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, bacterial infections, and more.

If you find yourself dealing with that type of unwelcome wake-up call, here are some possibilities for what might be driving that itch - and what you can do to soothe your seat.

You might be wiping too much
Get this: You can also get an itchy anus if you wipe too aggressively.

The skin around the anus is tender and sensitive. It's prone to damage if you wipe too hard with dry toilet paper - which can lead to anal itching, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders . "Moreover, some toilet papers are rough, and others are easily crumbled," the foundation points out. "Tiny bits of paper trapped in the anal skin can be irritating."

If you think you may be going a little too hard with the toilet paper, you may want to consider alternative ways to clean yourself - like a bidet, if you've got one. If not, try cleaning yourself in the shower instead of plowing through a whole roll of TP. Flushable wipes seem like an easy solution, but the chemicals in them can irritate some people, making the problem worse, some doctors say.

You might not be wiping enough
Slacking on your hygiene can irritate the skin and cause itching due to flecks of fecal matter remaining on your anus. Maybe you're not wiping enough after you use the toilet. Or maybe - as WebMD points out - you're consuming too much coffee, which relaxes the anal muscles and may cause poop to leak out.

If there's poop hanging around in your crack, get in the shower and wash your butt . Don't just stand there and let the water run between your cheeks: Use soap - but not the same bar you use on your face and body - and a hand-held shower head, if you have one.

Dr. Joel Krachman , MD, Chief of Gastroenterology for New Jersey-based AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, previously told MensHealth.com that guys should look for soaps labeled "sensitive" or "gentle" when it comes to cleaning below the waist.

STDs
Another potential cause of anal itching is from sexually transmitted infections, particularly herpes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, according to Ehsan Ali, M.D., primary care physician in Beverly Hills, Calif.
These STDs are fairly common, especially in people who engage in anal sex without condoms, Ali says.

When they occur, they cause inflammation in the rectal area, and that can prompt itching. With herpes or HPV, warts may also appear, a further cause of itching and burning. Any of these STDs may also prompt a rash, discharge, or penile and testicular pain.

If you suspect STDs might be the culprit, see your doctor - treatment can usually clear up the symptoms and stop the itch.

Eczema
Sometimes, the compulsion to scratch down below can come from eczema, a skin condition characterized by a red, scaly rash that can itch persistently.

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it has been linked to an overactive response by the immune system, and can be triggered by allergies or asthma, Alan Parks, M.D., dermatologist and founder of DermWarehouse. The condition can also crop up with external factors like changes in weather or exposure to household products like soap or detergent.

Stress can also be a factor, and can also cause the problem to worsen. When you get tense, your body issues a protective response by increasing inflammation . That can cause a flare-up of itching wherever you have eczema - including down there.

Parks notes that the problem is usually treated with topical steroid creams, which tend to take care of the itching fairly rapidly because they lower inflammation - unlike other medicated creams that may increase it and make itching worse.

Your laundry detergent
If there's an itchy rash on your behind, it could be from the laundry detergent you used to wash your underwear. The irritating chemicals found in laundry detergent can lead to contact dermatitis, a skin condition that causes a red rash and mild to severe itching, according to Healthline . The reaction may be more severe in spots where your clothing gets damp with sweat - such your groin.

You can prevent contact dermatitis by switching to a fragrance- or dye-free detergent.

What Should You Do About Anal Itching?
No matter what the issue, if it continues for longer than a couple of weeks and your tweaks to hygiene and diet arent working, see a doctor.

There is also a chance that the itching can be much more serious, such as a symptom of anal cancer. But Bernstein says the risk of that is incredibly low - mainly, because if it was cancer, youd be much more likely to have bleeding rather than just itching.

The Truth About Whether Soulmates Actually Exist

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 02:00 AM PDT

The Truth About Whether Soulmates Actually Exist
The concept of having a soulmate has been floating around since practically forever. The idea behind it is simple: Theres one person out there who is destined to be your other half.

Of course, this is a little controversial. While some people are all in with the idea of having a soulmate, others think its total B.S. Still others are in the middle, with the belief that you can have several soulmates during your lifetime.

Before we get into whether soulmates are real or not, its important to hammer out what, exactly, they are.

What is a soulmate, really?
The definition kind of depends on who youre talking to. The actual meaning of the notion of soulmates varies from person to person, says Joseph Cilona , PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist in Manhattan.

Still, he says, its fair to say that the most common belief around the term is that there is only one person in the world that is your soulmate, that that person is the perfect match for each of us, and that you must find that person to be happy in love and marriage.

Furthermore, the thought is that if we do find them, the relationship will be perfect and blissful, Cilona says. If we dont, any other relationship will never be as good.

Are Kaley Cuoco and her husband soulmates? Peep their body language to find out:

Other people define soulmates by what they do. A soulmate is a person who appears in your life in order to teach you an important lesson, says clinical psychologist Suzana E. Flores, author of Facehooked: How Facebook Affects Our Emotions, Relationships, and Lives .

They can shake up your soul by providing experiences that change the way you perceive yourself and the world," Flores explains. "Soulmates challenge you to transcend into a higher state of consciousness.

Interesting, so why is the idea of soulmates controversial?
Heres the thing: The concept of a soulmate is really romantic-provided youre with someone you love and feel really, really good with. But experts have some issues with thinking your S.O. is your soulmate for a slew of reasons.

For starters, the concept implies that youre not whole without someone else, and thats pretty messed up, says relationship psychologist Karin Anderson Abrell , PhD.

If youre stuck on the notion of soulmates, you could feel this void throughout your single years, she says. Feeling like you need someone to complete you is a horrible way to approach dating and relationships because it comes from a place of need.

Then theres the fact that being in a relationship with someone, even when youre an amazing match, can never be a totally flawless experience. The concept of soulmates can delude us into believing that once you find your person, everything will be perfect and easy-and thats not real life.

I feel strongly that the entire notion of soulmates is totally toxic , completely false, and that the expectations and beliefs that it fosters can very often sabotage relationships and undermine for many the quest for healthy romantic love, says Cilona. (A little harsh, maybe, but definitely not wrong.)

Doing the math on this also doesnt work out here. If theres only one person out there for you somewhere in the world, the odds that youll actually find them are pretty crappy. Not only that, youre pretty likely to click with plenty of different people.

The reality is there are almost 8 billion people in the world now, and many of them can be well-suited to be in a healthy, fulfilling, satisfying, romantic relationship with each other, Cilona says.

While people often talk about the importance of things like values, common interests, attractiveness, education level, and cultural background, the single-most important indicator of the likelihood of two people coming together is simply geographic proximity, Cilona says.

Not exactly romantic, but it makes sense: People who are near each other and come into more frequent contact with each other are much more likely to get to know each other and develop feelings of attraction and romantic love, he continues.

And finally, what if something happens to your soulmate? What if you get divorced from someone you thought was your soulmate or, worst-case scenario, they die? Are you supposed to just take yourself out of the relationship pool for life? That seems kind ofsucky, to say the least.

What's a healthier way to think of soulmates?
How about this: A soulmate doesn't have to be limited to a significant other.

Soulmates dont necessarily have to be reserved for romance, says Abrell. Think of Meredith and Cristina on Greys Anatomy. Or Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe on Friends. Or Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw and her girls. Sometimes you have a BFF who just gets you like no one else-and that's magical on its own.

Soulmates dont necessarily have to be reserved for romance."

With this broader definition, you can feel more fulfilled in life by the high-vibration connections you have with multiple people. And theres less pressure to make things perfect that way.

So I should let go of the idea that romantic soulmates are real?
If you're single and doing the whole dating thing, you don't want the fairytale idea of love to blind you from potential partners just because they may not seem like the soulmate match you've envisioned. Being a hopeless romantic can definitely ding you in that department.

But if you swear you've found your soulmate in life and you feel like an otherwise happy and fulfilled person, theres no harm in thinking the concept is legit, Abrell says. Just keep in mind that, on a romantic level, its really not something that science can prove or that most relationship experts even support (if, ya know, that matters to you).

You also need to remember that "soulmate" or not, relationships take work. Cilona stresses the importance of clear and effective communication, mutual trust that develops when each persons words match their behavior over time, mutual respect, and mutual caring. (Clearly, lots of mutual stuff here.)

Its also crucial to have a life partner who doesnt want to change you, Flores says. Sure, some things about your S.O. might annoy you, and vice versa, but accepting your person as a whole is what makes a good relationship a great one. Being comfortable spending time apart and doing your own thing also helps couples go the distance, Flores says.

Bottom line: It doesn't really matter if soulmates are real-as long as you are realistic about love and what it takes to nurture it.

Everything You Need to Know About Watchmen's Rorschach

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 01:00 AM PDT

Everything You Need to Know About Watchmen's Rorschach
Rorschach is Alan Moore's principal protagonist in the graphic novel Watchmen The mask-wearing, face-busting 'superhero' embodies the novel's theme of paranoia Rorschach's journal acts as the story's framing device and may influence the events of HBO's upcoming series

You cant miss the mask.

It occupies center frame, and the opening shot of HBOs Watchmen trailer. A room full of unidentified figures wear it, clad in plaid clothing, muttering the line: We are no one. We are everyone. And we are invisible. Tick tock.

Their mask is the face of Rorschach, the principal protagonist of Alan Moores and Dave Gibbons cultural touchstone graphic novel, Watchmen.

The character's name Rorschach refers to the famous ink blot test of the same name, developed by Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorschach. The test involves a series of ten inkblot pictures shown to a patient in order to provide a psychological evaluation. The patient describes what he sees-sometimes a face, sometimes a butterfly. The subjectiveness of the test and the possibility of contradictory answers allows for the riddle: an entity being two different things simultaneously-someone, no one, etc.

But who was the original Rorschach? Who was no one and (now, in HBO's series) everyone-wearing plaid?

In the Graphic Novel (and Comics)
Rorschach acts as the novels principle storytelling vehicle; much of it is framed through his investigative journal.

After masked heroes are outlawed by congress, Rorschach begins fighting crime alone. He does so until October 1985, when the novel begins. In October, Rorschach investigates the killing of another superhero, the Comedian. Believing somebody to be assassinating masked heroes, Rorschach calls on each of his former crime-fighting partners: Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Nite Owl, and Silk Spectre. Only Nite Owl adopts Rorschachs suspicions and the two begin further investigating. Midway through the story, however, Rorschach walks into a trap and is violently arrested by police.

Most of what we learn about Rorschach in the novel occurs in a series of flashbacks, framed while Rorschach is in jail and receiving psychological evaluation-the inkblot test that bears his name-by psychiatrist Malcolm Long. Rorschach initially lies to Long, claiming to see only butterflies and flowers when in fact his violent history unfolds before the reader.

As the story goes, Rorschach was born as Walter Kovacs in 1940. His father abandoned the family before the birth, and in order to keep the lights on, Kovacs mother begins working as a prostitute. She beats Kovacs after he walks in on her with a client.

Later, when two passing kids on the street call his mother a whore, Kovacs sticks a cigarette in one of the boys eyes then jumps onto the other and starts biting his face. Kovacs is ten. He is soon moved to a foster home. When he is told at 16 that his mother had been found dead in the South Bronx, Kovacs responds with a single word: good.

Kovacs then begins working in the garment industry. A customer orders a dress be made but refuses to accept it. Kovacs keeps the dress, and, after learning that his customer was raped and tortured outside her apartment bulling while the neighbors watched, Kovacs decides to cut the dress into a mask.

Kovacs begins fighting crime as Rorschach. Fighting crime entails beating and torturing criminals. One night, while investigating a missing girl, Rorschach breaks into a suspects home, passing two dogs chewing a bone. In the home he finds a furnace containing a piece of childs clothing. He looks out the window, realizing the bone is a human femur. Rorschach then kills the dogs with a meat cleaver and then ties up the suspect, dousing the room in kerosine, and lighting the house on fire.

Rorschach finally tells Long the story and admits that it was at this moment Walter Kovacs died and Rorschach remained-the only identity left.

Long leaves the interview room, his own home life now deteriorating due to his new assignment.

Not long after, Nite Owl and Silk Specter break Rorschach out of prison. Rorschach and Nite Owl head to the arctic to further investigate Ozymandias. In the arctic and surrounded by TV monitors, Ozymandias reveals his plan to fake an alien invasion and exterminate half of Manhattan in order to unite the U.S. and Soviets, avoiding a nuclear holocaust. When hes done speaking, Ozymandias explains that the event has already occurred, and a horrified Rorschach and Nite Owl watch the coverage on television. Ozymandias plan, however, appears to succeed, and some of the masked heroes agree to stay silent. Rorschach refuses and is vaporized by Dr. Manhattan.

Before Rorschach left for the arctic, however, he had mailed his journal to a local paper. The novel ends with editors finding the journal-which includes his investigation into Ozymandias.

In the Doomsday Clock comic series (published after Watchmen and taking place seven years after the novels events), Rorschachs journal has been published by the press. Chaos ensues and a boy dons Rorschachs mask. The boy is the son of psychiatrist Malcolm Long who examined Rorschach while in prison.

Connection to the Show
Thematically, Rorschachs character embodies the general paranoia of Cold War social and political life. Rorschach appears without a mask during several early scenes, dressed instead as a doomsday prophesier, a tatterdemalion holding a sign: the end is nigh.

Rorschachs conspiratorial attitude finds validation in the right-wing newspaper he reads. Politically, hes a nationalist. Though his chosen mask implies a kind of radical subjectiveness, the character remains staunchly absolutist: there is good and there is bad; there are good men and there are bad men. Punishment and retribution are twin pillars of Rorschachs sense of justice-giving him a legal and moral attitude that seems particularly American: Rorschach sees his job as bringing bad men of the world to justice.

The plaid, Rorschach-mask-wearing men in HBOs trailer embody a kind of Rorschach cult, perhaps formed after the events of the novel. They also seem to resemble a right-wing ultranationalist group, which may be consistent with a modernized Rorschach character.

Whoever they are, it's clear Rorschach's character and ideas live on, perhaps to the detriment of his crime-fighting endeavor. Only time will tell. Tick tock.

How To Do Calf Raises

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:30 AM PDT

How To Do Calf Raises correctly
Real talk: Improving ankle stability ranks about as high as changing the air filter or cleaning the inside of your oven on most people's to-do lists. But its actually super important for daily movements like, ugh, walking: Strong calf muscles create strong and stable ankles, which is what helps you stabilize when your foot lands, says Jacquelyn Baston, CSCS, owner of in Chicago. The stronger this muscle group, the more powerful your jumps, sprints, and lifts will be-and the lower your risk of injury.

How To Do Calf Raises
How to: Stand on a flat surface with your toes pointed straight ahead. Lift your heels off the floor to flex your calf muscle. Pause for moment, then slowly return to the floor. Thats one rep.

Calf raises are great for boosting ankle stability and overall balance. Plus calf strength!

Reps/sets for best results: Start with two sets of 10 to 15 reps, resting 30 to 60 seconds between sets. You should feel a burn (but not pain) by the end of each set; if not, up your rep count, Baston says.

Form tips: The one thing to watch is your ankles-if this area is weak, your ankles may roll in or out which can create imbalances and lead to injury at the ankles and knees, Baston explains. If this is the case, do ankle-strengthening exercises before you start bringing calf raises in to your workouts. And you can stand close to a wall for balance if necessary.

Benefits Of Calf Raises
Calf raises primarily work, you guessed it, the calf muscle . But they also involve the gastrocnemius and the soleus-two muscles that attach to the heel bone via your Achilles tendon-and the plantaris, that tendon most of us only know for plantar fasciitis, according to Baston.

This move is great for improving ankle stability, strength, and subsequently overall balance. Thats beneficial if you do a lot of explosive movements like jumping, since your ankle is what stabilizes your leg when you land. Ankle support is also crucial for heavy lower body lifts, she adds.

Make Calf Raises Part Of Your Workout
One great thing about this move is you can do it pretty much anywhere-Baston says she likes to do them while brushing her teeth.

If you want to bring it into your structured workout, though, aim to incorporate calf raises two to three days per week.

Because calf raises are a single-joint, isolation exercise, its important to pair them with other exercises that strengthen the joints this muscle group is attached to, Baston advises. In this case, thats the ankle joint below and the knee above.

Start by adding calf raises as a superset following squats or lunges . As you become stronger, you can start pairing the burner with plyometric movements that isolate the calf muscle further, like jumping rope or jump squats . You can also make it harder, by performing calf raises standing on one leg or holding a dumbbell in your hands.

Want a complete lower-body workout? Try this routine:

For an added stretch of the Achilles tendon and to work the ankles range of motion, you can also stand on a step or elevated surface and let your heel extend slightly below the foot before lifting the heel to contract the calf.

And speaking of stretching, be sure you stretch after a workout that includes this move. This is a muscle group that can have a hard time recovering and lead to injury in the arches of the feet, like plantar fasciitis, if you dont stretch it after, Baston says. Wall lunges and downward dog post-workout should do the trick.
