Some Talking points from 'Rema Freestyle EP'

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Some Talking points from 'Rema Freestyle EP'
The genre experimentation on this is raw and says a lot about Rema and his management by Jonzing/Mavin.

On Monday, March 29, 2019, Nigerian singer and rave of the moment, Rema released his debut project, the 4-track 'Rema EP.'

The project took a few days to truly resonate, but songs like 'Iron Man,' and 'Why' are now making the rounds as either sleeper hits or fan-favourite while 'Dumebi' is a certified hit

Before that project, Rema was an internet sensation who liked hopping on beats, and freestyling his way to ridiculous melodies. He would deliver in his signature shotgun (passenger's front seat) style while working his hand between folds and gestures and delivering into the camera.

In fact, as Don Jazzy told Loose Talk Podcast, the 18-year-old was discovered by D'Prince after he freestyled over the beat to 'Gucci Gang.' This led to his Jonzing/Mavin signing after D'Prince flew to Benin to convince his parents.

On June 19, 2019, Jonzing/Mavin released a compilation of his best freestyle sessions as one EP titled, Rema Freestyle EP and here are seven talking points from the EP;

While he is a natural, Rema is an attentive student of music
On my first listen to Rema EP, I was not impressed by 'Iron Man.' But by the time I got to 'Why,' I knew Rema had talent. It was not about that genre - a scarce commodity region, it was his brilliant execution of the song that overshadowed its weaknesses.

I wrote, "When 'Why' comes on with a typical generation z/Soundcloud generation music; trap-infused emo/cloud music from the staple of XXXTentacion, Lil Peep, Paris, Juice WRLD, but more like Makonnen, I get blown away because I did not see it coming.

"It showcases an artist with adaptable talent, recognized by the team behind him that he could make much more than basic dance music. Although, 'Why' tells another generic love story, this shortcoming is less noticeable that it was on 'Iron Man.'"

On Rema Freestyle EP, a smoother experience to his freestyle sessions, he embodies the times that birthed him in sound, flow, cadence and delivery. Asides the obvious natural talent Rema possesses to effortlessly recreate his version of what he consumes, there is significant evidence that he consumes a lot of music.

Talent might get you somewhere, but there is almost no way he delivers a song like 'Trap In The Submarine' without have even a little obsession with consuming music.

By contemporary standards, Rema is a rapper
Times have changed and the term 'rapper' has gotten flexible with time and natural evolution.

Classification of music has gotten harder. With how certain brands of music - though sung - are

As people digested the familiar, yet new EP on the morning of June 20, 2019, Dayo tells Pulse that, "After listening to 'Why' on Rema EP, this is the project a lot of people I have talked to wanted. The kind that is experimental and allows Rema to explore this side of his artistry."

He is right. A lot of hoped Rema would explore this side of himself and he has done it strategically. Mavin rebranded - his freeststyles - what people already knew and gave it to them to gauge reception. Commendable strategy.

Production and Delivery
This sound on this project borrows from trap music (percussion), soft rock (with the guitars and strings), pop (with the strings) and Hip-Hop for an alternative outlook.

The project is then SoundCloud Rap, Trap&B, Emo Rap, Trap, lo-fi Trap and Alternative R&B. With its infectious melodies, production is incredibly psychedelic

Topically, Rema's freestyles are impressively substantiated - not bland. He has lines that can be followed - albeit incoherent substance.

Additional Thoughts
From now on, Rema's stage performances will be interesting to watch - especially those ones before an audience of younger millennials and his fellow generation zers.

When he is ready, he will be one of Nigeria's - if not the - most attractive, commercially viable act(s) to the western market.

He will be more attractive than Wizkid and Davido to western acts and tastemakers. He has the required contemporary versatility and his style is more adaptive. On beats with no 'afro' inclinations, most of Nigeria's premier talent except Burna Boy and Wande Coal struggle.

Rema has an expansive sonic cadence that will allow him to slalom effortlessly between different styles, genres and beat counts.

Even better, he is still young, raw and largely malformed. He will only get better and more experimental. This means his sonic suitability will only increase.

I know the inevitable shouts of 'He is still new, Wizkid/Davido are legends' and 'Don't pile pressure' will start, but talent is obvious. This is not hype. If he is not conditioned and he is allowed to grow naturally - a program Mavin is already following - he will blossom incredibly and my 'hype' will become an understatement.

In fact, one might argue that the organic nature of the four songs on Rema Freestyle EP is a deft strategy by Mavin/Jonzing to make him test the obvious Emo/SoundCloud rap, Trap&B and alternative R&B side of him.

The length of those songs reminds one of XXXTentacion's 'small chops' music. For now, it will be nice to see Rema go in on a freestyle session.

Former PDP Chieftain Reveals Why He Joined APC Is To Spearhead Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential Ambition

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 10:04 AM PDT

Mutiu Kunle Okunola

The former organizing secretary of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mutiu Kunle Okunola, said that he defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to throw his weight behind Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the ruling party, in his alleged bid to become Nigeria's president come 2023.

Okunola who officially joined the APC on Wednesday, June 19, boasted that the PDP has no future in the state, adding that Lagos is now owned by one party, Daily Trust reports.

The former PDP bigwig, claimed that his defection means downfall to the PDP, saying that the "PDP is now in the cooler".

The former PDP chieftain said that he is willing "to give Tinubu the support he needs if he desires to contest the 2023 presidency".

Okunola said: "So I decamped not for any other thing but because of Tinubu so that I can put my strength to make the 2023 project for Tinubu a reality. I believe it is only Tinubu that has the capacity in the south-west to rule the country."

Illgod and Timi Kei create one of the best rap albums of 2019 with 'Soulsoup'

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 07:30 AM PDT

Illgod and Timi Kei create one of the best rap albums of 2019 with 'Soulsoup'
Born Moses Babatunde, Illgod is the Port Harcourt-based Nigerian music producer, behind the SoundCloud mixtape series, 'Kalakuti.' The series merges tenets of Fela-inspired afrobeats with boom bap.

Word on the street says Timi Kei was going to be the hottest rapper out South-South Nigeria before he took a step back for reasons personal to him. But now, they're both back.

A few weeks before the release of this album, Illgod told Pulse about his struggle with writer's block. It hampered his ability to create music of which he's truly proud. But if he Soulsoup must be something the finicky producer is proud of.

Also there's no one better to release the music with than the socially and religiously aware and fellow Port Harcourt boy, Timi Kei.

Soulsoup
Speaking to Urban Central, the pair said 'Throbbin' was the first song made. Then, 'Respiration' came after 'Throbbin.' 'You Can,' 'I Dunno,' 'Better Days,' and 'Coming Home' then came after 'Respiration.'

Illgod handled the production and Timi Kei is the rapper. The production is very 90's Hip-Hop-esque and is heavy on soul and old Hip-Hop samples.

Thematically, one thing is central to the Timi Kei's lyrics and that is his Christian faith. Bible verses and narratives interwoven into his lyrics and metaphors.

With the Christian undertones, Timi Kei addresses introspective topics of struggles, romance, pressures, drug use, and other issues relevant to life.

Every topic addressed on every song is heightened by Timi Kei's lyricism which incorporates an impressive rhyme scheme, and deft use of metaphors and symbolism. These tools aid the storytelling and illuminate ideas.

However, the symbolisms and metaphors are too complex that most of them could elude the listener. Sometimes, the idea gets lost in the rhyme schemes and metaphors.

For example, the focus of 'Soulsoul Pt. II' - about a girl abusing drugs as a coping mechanism -only comes alive after 1:00. Sometimes, we creatives need to understand the concept of simplicity.

We create for an audience. While poetry prides itself on symbolism and complex figures of speech that need to be deciphered, poetry is read - that is easier than listening and trying to process what is being said.

The time to go on lyrical gymnastics should not be conflated with a time for storytelling. While they can coexist, storytelling should not be superseded by lyrical exercises, storytelling should be aided by lyricism and deft rhyme schemes.

As much as the music is about the rapper's gift, it is for the audience. Regardless, this album showcases Timi Kei as one of the best rappers in Nigeria.

However, the complex rhymes and lyrical weird flex that warps the idea of 'Soulsoup Pt. II' elevates the 'I Dunno.' The song documents life's struggles, doubt and the hustle, but Timi Kei's delivery almost made it seem like a script for an Alfonso Cuaron movie.

At its best, 'I Dunno' felt like a Kendrick Lamar song with layers upon layers of things to unfold. The best song on the album is 'Respiration.' It exemplifies everything good about rap music.

The sheaths of fundamental Hip-Hop permeate the soul of 'Respiration' with evocative lines like, "Who do know that can control a flow this potent? Holy Moses..." That's just rude!

Another totally impressive song is 'Coming Home.' While again, the central theme of confusion and a life going astray saved by faith is overshadowed by lyrical exercises, you cannot but rate the song.

While I played this album for the fourth time, it was clear that it will have different perceptions from everybody. Some will break down it's lyrical content, while some will just enjoy the flow, production and delivery and go away.

Hip-Hop heads might see that as a minus, but it's not. It is a win that implies that the album has something for everybody.

'The Word' will blow your mind with the resignation to the power of theism. It is follows an unashamed Timi Kei owning his faith. 'Better Days' is another brilliant song that documents the effect of change after the dust settles.

Verdict

The album has its weaknesses, but its strengths are autocratic, making the effects of those weaknesses too momentary - not profound.

On the track list, one considers if the album would have been better had the first person narratives made up the second part of the album, while the first part consists of the second person stories.

One also wonders if 'Smoke A Joint' could have been the album opener, rather than a final track. Nonetheless, at the same time, one threads carefully because this album feels like one with a track list capable of being arranged in three different and equally brilliant ways.

There is also the problem of the slight uniformity of topics. Topical diversity is always a plus in rap music. Although brilliant, there's also a uniformity of sounds which might make limit the reach of this album to only a section of Hip-Hop lovers.

Regardless of weaknesses, this album has potential to age really well.

Joycelyn Savage's father says "R.Kelly will be spending next fathers day in jail"
The family of one of R.Kelly's girlfriend's, Joycelyn Savage are hoping that he spends the next Fathers day in jail.

It is the hope and prayers of Joycelyn Savage's family (One of his alleged sex slaves) that he spends the next the Fathers day in jail.

According to TMZ, Joycelyn's dad, Tim Savage says he is counting down the days until the embattled singer goes to jail and his daughter comes back home.

Tim says the year's Fathers day left him with an empty feeling because he only got to spend time with 2 of his 3 daughters ... and he's blaming it all on R. Kelly, and wishing the worst for him.

It would be recalled that a few months ago, Joycelyn Savage and Azriel Clary both girlfriends of R.Kelly had come out to deny that they were been held captive by the music star.

According to them, their parents were fabricating stories about their relationship with R.Kelly.

21 Nigerian states the UK doesn't want its citizens to visit

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 05:30 AM PDT

21 Nigerian states the UK doesn't want its citizens to visit
The British govt has warned its citizens not to travel to 21 states in Nigeria because of kidnappings, terrorism, militancy and diseases.

The British government has strongly advised its nationals against setting foot on the soils of 21 Nigerian states for their own safety.

ChannelsTV reports that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom says the travel advisory has become necessary as a result of growing insecurity in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.

In a statement posted on its website and updated on Monday, June 17, 2019, the FCO said frequent attacks by terrorist sect Boko Haram in the restive northeastern region of Nigeria, raids by armed bandits in the northwest and north-central states, kidnappings across Nigeria, fatal diseases like Ebola and Lassa fever and militancy in the south-south, have made Nigeria a dangerous destination for the rest of the world.

British nationals have therefore been advised against travelling to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, and the riverine communities of Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states.

They were also advised against trips to within 20 kilometers of the border with Niger and Zamfara states.

The travel advisory
The statement from the FCO reads in parts: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to: Borno State, Yobe State, Adamawa State, Gombe State, riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States, within 20km of the border with Niger in Zamfara State.

The FCO advises against all but essential travel to: Bauchi State, Zamfara State, Kano State, Kaduna State, Jigawa State, Katsina State, Kogi State, within 20km of the border with Niger in Sokoto and Kebbi States, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers State, Abia State.

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Nigeria. Most attacks occur in the northeast, particularly in Borno (including central Maiduguri and along access routes connecting the city to other major towns and along the Niger border, including in Damasak), Yobe, including the eastern LGAs bordering Borno State both north and south of the Damaturu road), and the Adamawa States. There have also been significant attacks in Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Jos and Bauchi States and in the Federal capital, Abuja.

The terrorist threat across eastern Yobe and Borno State is high, with frequent recent attacks. Terrorist groups carried out attacks in North East Nigeria during the February 2019 election period, and further attacks are likely. We continue to advise against all travel to Borno and Yobe States.

On 23 February 2019, ISWA launched an attack involving indirect fire that resulted in explosions in multiple locations within Maiduguri.

There is also a high threat of criminal kidnap in the Niger Delta region and Kogi state.

If you travel to areas to which the FCO advise against travel, you are particularly at risk and will need a high level of security. If youre working in northern Nigeria you should make sure your employers provide an adequate level of security where you live and where you work, make sure they regularly review security arrangements and familiarise yourself with those plans.

There have been recent attacks in Maiduguri, Baga, Monguno, Damasak and Rann in Borno State and in Gujba and Geidam LGAs in Yobe State. Further attacks are likely. We advise against all travel to Borno and Yobe States. See Local travel.

A number of kidnappings, including of foreigners, took place in Kano city in April 2018. We advise against all but essential travel to Kano state. If youre in or around Kano city, we recommend you take added precautions.

You should be aware of your surroundings and avoid large crowds and public demonstrations as they can turn violent unexpectedly and at short notice. Follow news reports and be alert to developments. If you become aware of any nearby unrest or disturbances, you should leave the area immediately. Violent crime is common. See Crime

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever on 22 January. For further information and advice see the NaTHNaC website.

UK health authorities have classified Nigeria as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. For information and advice about the risks associated with Zika virus, visit the National Travel Health Network and Centre website.

Around 117,000 British nationals visit Nigeria each year. Most visits are trouble-free.

Before considering travel to areas to which the FCO advise against all or all but essential travel you should take professional security advice. Be vigilant at all times, keep others informed of your travel plans and vary your routines. If you're working in Nigeria you should follow your employers' security advice, make sure your accommodation is secure and review your security measures regularly. Consular support is offered in Nigeria although limited in areas where the FCO advise against all or all but essential travel.

Technically defeating Boko Haram
On March 1, 2018, Boko Haram attacked a military base in Rann, Borno State. Nine members of the Nigerian security forces and 3 United Nations consultants were killed during the attack.

Six members of the Nigerian security forces and at least 4 other humanitarian workers were injured, and a further 3 humanitarian workers were abducted.

Some terrorist attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria in recent times have also targeted foreign nationals.

Only last week, terrorists reportedly sacked a military base in Borno and sent soldiers fleeing for their lives.

The British government also reminded its nationals that it won't pay ransom to kidnappers to have them freed should they be taken hostage.

"The long-standing policy of the British government is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners increases the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) also makes payments to terrorists illegal," the statement read.

The Buhari presidency recently announced that it is doing everything to deal the terrorists a devastating blow, even though it has often claimed in the past that the terrorists have been "technically defeated".

Boko Haram has killed about 30,000 people since it commenced an insurgency against the Nigerian state in 2009.

We won't even be surprised if he decided to splash some few of his millions to purchase his own private jet because clearly, first class can't be doing it for him anymore.

BBNaija Leo: "Before you get married, be very sure of the sexuality of your partner'
Ex-Big Brother Naija housemate, Leo DaSilva has taken to his Twitter page to warn people planning to get married to be aware of their partner's sexuality before going ahead.

It is no news that there is a law against homosexuality in Nigeria which has caused a lot of gay people to go into heterosexual relationships in order to hide their sexuality.

Recall, a Nigerian man identified as Alex Sensima Asiwaju Russo revealed a shocking story on Twitter about a closet gay man getting married to a lady. He further disclosed that the groom was having an affair with one of the groomsmen.

Now, Former Big Brother Naija reality star has taken it upon himself to create awareness about it.

He wrote;

"Before you get married, be very sure of the sexuality of your partner."

"Bruh the stories I am getting in my DM from this tweet. Absolutely mind blown."

"I'm not trying to promote sex before marriage or anything like that. If you want to fornicate or not, that's between you and your God. I'm just advising you all that it's important to know your partners sexuality while getting to know them, do not ignore that aspect."

"Tips: watch how they respond to things, look at the same sex, talk about minor things. If possible try to always look at what catches their gaze"

"Just pay attention. You don't need to sleep with someone before you know these things."

VP Yemi Osinbajo: Extreme poverty in Nigeria gives me sleepless nights
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the problem of extreme poverty in Nigeria keeps him up at night.

The Vice President disclosed this at a dinner and Interactive Session with Faculty Members, Harvard Business School (HBS) in Lagos on Tuesday June 18th.

"I think what keeps me up at night has to do with extreme poverty. The issue is that the largest number of those who vote for us are the very poor. The promises that government makes to them is that their lives will be better and obviously they are looking at their lives being better in the shortest possible time. I will like to see Nigeria being an industrialised nation in the next 10 years; a very strong middle class and most people living above poverty line." he said
