Position description
APCO Worldwide, Inc. is looking for forward-thinking and enthusiastic Public Affairs interns for the fall semester of 2019. Public Affairs internships at APCO involve working with professionals from a variety of interesting backgrounds, including communications professionals, former congressional staffers and former federal agency professionals. Interns in the Public Affairs practice will engage with and do research on a wide variety of subjects and issues, including federal regulations, legislation, and mapping out key thought leaders on various subjects, among other tasks. Interns will also be exposed to work from the other practices within APCO (global marketing, health care & health policy, corporate communications, crisis management & litigation communication, global solutions, Insight/research, the office of chairman, and digital). Additionally, APCO provides stimulating experiences including lunch & learns and opportunities to attend external events. This is a paid position.

So, what does it take to become a part of the APCO Internship Program?

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Researches topics and issues and analyzing findings;
  • Monitoring of issues or news events;
  • Drafts press releases, fact sheets, and editorial content;
  • Identifies and compiles lists of media contacts;
  • Edits and proofreads client deliverables;
  • Assists in the development of client proposals;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A recent graduate or; currently enrolled in an accredited university or college as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student;
  • The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and extremely attentive to detail;
  • Applicants are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills and experience successfully balancing multiple tasks;
  • Keen interest in current affairs, public policy, and media;
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Former internships or work at communications agencies, federal agencies, international organizations, the U.S. Congress, or in state and local government is preferred, but not required;
  • Must be able to spend at least 20 hours per week in the office.

Paid Fall Middle East Policy & Advocacy Internship with Mercy Corps

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 3-4 months at 30 hours/week

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE INTERNSHIP: $1500/month stipend

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mercy Corps works in fragile and conflict-affected countries, often where communities are recovering from disaster, conflict, or economic collapse. With programs in more than 40 countries, and an annual budget of more than $400 million, Mercy Corps is one of the largest relief and development NGOs in the US.

The Mercy Corps Policy and Advocacy team serves as the main interface between Mercy Corps and external partners (particularly the US government) on issues of policy. The team seeks to advance Mercy Corps' values and interests by promoting policies that support our mission. We work to inform and shape policy in a number of ways, including:
  • Congressional Advocacy: direct meetings with key congressional offices, participation in briefings and hearings, review and commenting on draft legislation, active participation in discussions related to the foreign aid budget, and linking Members of Congress who are travelling with our teams in the field.
  • Administration Advocacy: meetings with Administration officials, ongoing communication with key partner agencies in the USG, participation in joint consultations and briefings together with partner NGOs in DC.
  • Joint work with NGO partners: active participation in Interaction working groups and other coalition efforts organized in DC on priority issues or countries for Mercy Corps, drafting of joint documents, organizing joint lobby days on Capitol Hill.
  • Organizing DC visits for visiting Mercy Corps field staff: scheduling meetings for visiting staff and accompanying them to ensure adequate preparation and follow up to these visits.
  • Publications: preparing and disseminating policy briefs on key issues, circulating information on Mercy Corps programs to key policy makers, participating in joint documents and sign-ons with other NGOs, working with field staff to draft joint articles on policy-related issues for publication.
The intern(s) will support and participate in the work of the Policy and Advocacy team, with a primary focus on the Middle East. Areas of focus may include:
  • Response to humanitarian crises in Syria, Iraq, Palestine (West Bank/Gaza) and Yemen.
  • Support the team's strategic analysis and advance agency priorities on the Middle East with Congress and the Administration
  • Improving a robust and principled humanitarian response to the various crises in the Middle East
  • Defending foreign aid budgets in an era of fiscal austerity
  • Research on Middle East priorities or other policy team or agency issues
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Understanding the linkage between international policy, programming and outcomes in the humanitarian and development field, with a focus on the Middle East.
  • Understanding core elements of the US policy process, including the roles of Congress, USAID, State, and the White House in development policy-making
  • Knowledge of key qualitative and quantitative resources related to US development policy
  • Understanding specific policy issues, as listed above, or according to the interests of the intern
DELIVERABLES:
The Intern will support the PA team through the following activities:
  • Conduct policy and practice research in support of Mercy Corps advocacy initiatives
  • Assist in drafting advocacy documents such as reports, briefing notes, talking points, 'Dear Colleague' letters, or factsheets on relevant policy issues
  • Attend meetings and hearings of interest to Mercy Corps and report back on key issues
  • Assist in organizing meetings with Congressional offices, Administration officials, and other contacts, and in maintaining a database of key interactions
  • Review external and internal reports and publications and summarize relevant findings
  • Assist in communicating policy and advocacy updates to the broader Mercy Corps community through Mercy Corps' intranet system, weekly newsletter, and website

Global Electric Transportation Program Overview
In this role, you will be part of the electromobility team in the Urban Efficiency and Climate workstream, working within the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. Internship Summary
As an electromobility intern, you will work with other members of the electromobility team at WRI to help research, document, and publish findings. One of your primary tasks will be to help populate and launch the team's electric transportation database, which is a resource that will provide detailed information on a wide range of global issues related to enable mass adoption of electric vehicles. Through this position, you will communicate both with staff in Washington DC and with staff across WRI's international offices.
  • Conduct and coordinate research and analysis on various electromobility topics.
  • Organize information and research to input to the team's online electric transportation database.
  • Assist team members with collecting and organizing data from various sources.
  • Contribute written and graphic content to publications, reports, papers, and presentations.
  • Lead the development of a monthly global electric transportation newsletter.

Internship Summary
In this role, you will contribute to the research and analytical efforts of WRI U.S. and its mission of providing independent and authoritative evidence for how the U.S. can meet its short- and long-term climate commitments. This will include support across WRI U.S.' portfolio of projects, including work on Climate Federalism, Renewable Natural Gas as a Climate Strategy, Carbon Pricing, and America's Pledge, an initiative aiming to aggregate and quantify the impact of city, state, and business climate actions and examine how additional action can impact the nation's ability to meet its climate commitments. You will help support this work by researching and compiling quantitative and qualitative information on state and local climate actions in the U.S. You will also contribute to research reports and communications materials as needed. This work will be done in close collaboration with project leads, technical partners, and other WRI programs. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with quantitative skill and familiarity with energy and climate related data in the U.S.

Learning Outcomes
The intern will gain experience in the following areas:
  • Conduct original quantitative and qualitative research to support WRI's work on Climate Federalism, Renewable Natural Gas as a Climate Strategy, Carbon Pricing, and America's Pledge.
  • Conduct original quantitative and qualitative research on state, city, and corporate climate actions.
  • Maintain and synthesize energy and emissions related data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and other key sources
  • Write short reports on research findings, or assist in the writing of larger reports with leading subject matter experts
  • Help draft blogs and other materials to communicate research findings to a wider audience; and
  • Leverage growing expertise in energy and climate datasets to assist colleagues in related tasks on other workstreams as needed
  • As needed, assist with scheduling meetings, preparing and organizing briefing materials, providing logistical support for events, assisting with meeting follow-up, and helping to ensure internal coordination
Internship Qualifications
  • Pursuing or achieved bachelor's degree in environmental policy, environmental science, economics, public policy or related field, or a relevant law degree; Master's degree preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of U.S. climate policy landscape, particularly at the subnational level
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Excellent data collection and management skills—e.g., through Microsoft Excel, CSV
  • Strong oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to work well in a team, manage multiple priorities, and work under tight deadlines
