Our Opinion: Naira Marley deserves criticism for 'Soapy' ?

Our Opinion: Naira Marley deserves criticism for 'Soapy' ?
Marlians are a problem, Naira Marley needs to think about his career, and there's latent hypocrisy on the part of Nigerians.

Music or any type of content is created for an audience. Through history, the power of content in sound, text or picture has influenced humanity in lifestyle for better or worse.

Music is related to sound and sound has proven to be near-peerless in how it parasitically lives in the mind of man, taking up space, driving psychedelia, and inspiring at least a miniscule of changes.

Good content influences pop culture and inspires altruism or other forms of good in humanity. When content like music inspires bad things, virality ensues. In the internet age, that's not a good thing.

On June 28, 2019, Nigerian singer, Naira Marley released his new single, 'Soapy.' It was his follow-up to 'Opotoyi' - the single which was released while he was in EFCC custody. To both singles, there is a common ground; explicit content that inspires controversy.

'Opotoyi' explicity addresses the woman's bum with lewd lyrics of base sexual adulation. While 'Soapy' never made any direct reference to masturbation, the word - like 'roll dice - means 'to masturbate.' It came about with how boys use lotion or soap as lubrication to masturbate.

Riding on the infectious Rexxie-produced beat, the song sees an unrepentant Naira Marley make references to his time inside and outside EFCC custody. On the song, the sticking comes when the rapper talks about how people should dance 'Soapy' in the various Nigerian detention centres and prisons.

He also talks about how unmarried people should dance 'Soapy' and not use omo (a Nigerian detergent) to soapy (masturbate). He was deft with it and knew what he was doing. The song was a calculated effort in line with Naira's strategy with his past four singles. The strategy is simple; making controversial songs.

He knew what the word 'Soapy' meant to Nigerian millennials. He knew it was going to cause controversy. So what he did instead was say 'Jo Soapy' (which means 'dance soapy') anytime he referenced the word 'Soapy.' He also created a dance for it. He was using 'Jo' which is Yoruba for 'dance' instead of 'Se,' which is Yoruba for 'Do.'

When you think about the places he said 'Jo Soapy,' they are places and instances with people crawling with a need to masturbate. Naira mentioned prisons, detention centres and also galvanized unmarried people to 'Jo Soapy.' People in prisons don't have internet, they can't know Naira's 'Soapy' is. How can they 'Jo Soapy'?

The married man might know what 'Soapy' is, but why is Naira advising him not use 'Omo' to 'Jo Soapy.' Why would he need Omo - a detergent - to dance 'Soapy'? Will it be poured on the ground so that he can moonwalk?

In essence, Naira was being deft. 'Jo Soapy' is Naira actually saying 'Se Soapy' - which means to masturbate. Naira was using a metaphor to telling people to masturbate. Naira was being coy with lyrics that he seemingly hoped would be controversial. Asides that, the dance Naira created mimics masturbation. The song's art is also a liquid soap.

Nigeria prides itself on morals and stamps on the topic of sex. But mostly, that is hypocritical.

Nonetheless, by Sunday, June 30, 2019, Naira Marley was subject to intense criticism. For one, Nigerians said he was promoting masturbation.

Secondly, some Marlians - Naira's fanbase - were captured doing the 'Soapy' dance with a public impression of masturbation. It was disturbing.

On the issue of masturbation...
Masturbation has always been a sticking point in global sub-culture. On the one hand, medical professionals claim it is healthy and needed. We also realize that masturbating is better than rape.

But on the other hand, masturbation can be addictive. As we all know, addiction is bad for the mind. Excessive masturbation has also been said to negatively impact a healthy sex life.

Most Nigerian millennials might have started masturbating in their early teens, but topics of explicit sex and exposure to porn will never be healthy for a young mind. The risks are enormous.

With Naira Marley starting the 'Soapy' dance which mimicks masturbation, his fans have made it go viral. Some of these viral videos where people dance 'Soapy' were also shot in public places were people of all ages could see that.

Yes, Nigerians are hypocrites about topic of sex. Yes, some of the people criticizing Naira Marley and the marlians masturbate behind closed doors. Yes, people will masturbate with or without the existence of Naira Marley's song/dance and its crooked acceptance by the marlians. After all, Nigeria keeps coming up with insane numbers of porn consumption.

Those are all good points, but put the issue of hypocrisy to one side. Sex and everything associated with it should still be confined to private places. We are human beings, not animals. Sex is sensitive and highly triggering. The psychological effects of depicting sex in public places will have a negative impact on society.

For one, it will posit sex a something commonplace and will promote an entitlement to women' bodies. For young and impressionable minds, it has a tendency to continue the scourges of rape, molestation and sexual harassment. We can't have that.

Naira Marley and the marlians need to behave like sensible human beings. But I do not think 'promoting masturbation' is valid criticism. Masturbation has not be proven as something inherently bad.

Going forward...

Naira Marley has since said, 'Say no to rape and yes to soapy dance.' But stopping a scourge is more than word of mouth. Even with that post, Naira Marley has kept posting sensitive dance routines that explicitly or implicitly depict sex on his Instagram page.

Naira Marley needs to start being responsible. 'Soapy' is already a lost cause that is destined to go viral, but Naira Marley needs to be responsible. If not for anything, for the one thing he cares about; his career. He seems to care about nothing else but making popular music.

Circa 2010, Nigeria witnessed the emergence of three acts; Damoche, Skally Mental and ZeeWorld. Their rise was so fast because their songs were an explicit lyrical celebration of sex.

They had hits, but less than a year later, their careers died, never to rise again. Controversy in relation to sex will give you hits, but people will move on faster than you realize and your star will become a fallen asteroid. When fans move on, they won't come back to you.

Naira Marley is popping now, but it won't be for much longer if he continues on this path. Sadly, selling him this narrative will be hard. He is seriously of the hottest rappers in Nigeria at the moment.

On the hypocrisy of Nigerians...

Every other day, Nigerians celebrate and enjoy sexually explicit content from foreign rap artists like Cardi B, Lil Wayne, Megan Thee Stallion, City Girls and so forth.

We gulp them down and enjoy them with zero criticism. A lot of Nigerians happily sung along and danced to Blueface's 'Thotiana.' and Patapaa's 'One Corner.' So, you have to understand when Nigerians claim there is double standard in criticizing Naira Marley. It is a valid line of thought.

While it makes the issue complex, it does not invalidate criticism against Naira Marley, Marlians, 'Soapy' and soapy dance. Naira Marley still did something worthy of criticism. Additionally, Naira Marley also happened on the home front.

It definitely is hypocrisy and partializing, but it definitely is not an invalidation.

Looks like Mercy and Gedoni will be the 1st Couple in BBNaija 2019 House

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:09 AM PDT

It looks like we might have found our first lovebirds in the Big Brother house and we are talking about the sexy video vixen, Mercy and the fashion entrepreneur, Gedoni.

Looks like Mercy and Gedoni will be the 1st Couple in BBNaija 2019 House
The gist is that the two have found comfort in each other and they can't seem to get enough of cuddling each other.

Mercy, who apparently looks more interested the in the tall and dark Gedoni might be marking her territory as she held him tight while the housemates gather in the house in their second day in the house.

Gedoni, even though looks slow on getting the vibes on his new love interest, appears to be playing along. This might be one of the most beautiful and interesting romance stories we will be seeing in the Big Brother house.

Is this a strategy for these guys or are they actually beginning to have feelings for each other? This might be too early for us to conclude but they sure do look good together.

TY Bello talks about how silence over sexual abuse almost killed her

TY Bello talks about how silence over sexual abuse almost killed her
TY Bello shares her battle with the scar that comes with sexual abuse and how it almost killed her.

The singer turned photographer made this known vis her Instagram page on Sunday, June 30, 2019. According to her even though she was rescued by God years after, she couldn't speak about the topic because she somehow felt it was her fault.

"I remember how the silence I had to keep after the abuse slowly killed me .. I also remember the relief I found in my relationship God so early. That really was my rescue ..yet for decades I could never find my voice on the matter .. I was still afraid ..Mostly because I felt it may have been the fault of my seven-year-old self .. somehow... Fast forward .. almost thirty years later ..I knew better .. and was 'big' enough .. I understood the importance of stepping up when it was time to share my story .. and ..I did in my @kemiadetiba 's #kingwomen interview .. it surprised me, however, how hard it was to talk about sexual abuse after so many years .. but it was such a relief ..But soon after came the resistance," she wrote.

She went to write on how we aren't really doing enough about kids that have been molested in the past and present and also how to teach every child the power of their voices.

"In sharing ..I faintly began tasting the shame again .. that same feeling of naked 'dirtiness '' I had as a child .. it hadn't completely gone away.It also became clear .. that real stories of sexual abuse still sounded like NOVELTY. I saw headline after headline .. even in broken English .. this my 'confession '.that ' Dem 'SPOIL ' me when I be small pikin'. It didn't feel good that it was so 'sensational' as I was aware of how massive a plague this was ..WE CLEARLY ARE NOT TALKING ENOUGH ..too many children sexually abused .. too many sex crimes ..especially now .. right under our noses. I had to push past the inner conflict that talking about it was 'unnecessary' ... it was too long ago ..too 'Oyinboish 'to discuss publicly...

"Then of course ..that talking about it now would make it seem like my family failed me as a child .. but they didn't .. and could never have known .. I had mastered SILENCE !they were victims too. Every abuse story is different but it is SHAME that makes them complicated...Sadly, the shame hardly lies with the perpetrators... So I've learnt that it's time to nail shame right where it belongs ..Far away from the wronged .. Bringing them instead to healing, justice, and freedom. We must teach every child the power of their voices, Apparently, we must teach adults too ... and more importantly, we must learn to listen .. understand and know that Sex is not a dirty word .. but DENIAL is..." she wrote.

TY Bello's latest post is most likely connected to the outcry that has been experienced in the country over the last few days following Timi Dakolo's wife now viral video where she called out the senior pastor of COZA, Biodun Fatoyinbo for raping her when she was a minor.

Herdmen Attacks: Why Ruga Settlement Across Nigeria Is Being Established – Presidency

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:08 AM PDT

Garba Shehu

The Presidency has given reasons for the planned establishment of Ruga settlement for Fulani herdsmen across the nation, following controversies surrounding move.

According to a Daily Post report, the news of the Federal Government's move to set up settlement for the herders accross the Nation, has generated a lot of controversies among Nigerians.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, in a statement signed on Sunday, however said, the Presidency "wishes to draw attention to recent unhelpful comments regarding the plan to stop roaming of cattle herders with the attendant clashes with farmers."

The SSA said, "Ruga Settlement' that seeks to settle migrant pastoral families simply means rural settlement in which animal farmers, not just cattle herders, will be settled in an organized place with provision of necessary and adequate basic amenities such as schools, hospitals, road networks, vet clinics, markets and manufacturing entities that will process and add value to meats and animal products.

RELATED:  Presidency Summons Perm Sec, Fed. Ministry Of Agric Over RUGA Settlements Wide Spread Criticisms

"Beneficiaries will include all persons in animal husbandry, not only Fulani herders.

"The Federal Government is planning this in order to curb open grazing of animals that continue to pose security threats to farmers and herders.

"The overall benefit to the nation includes a drastic reduction in conflicts between herders and farmers, a boost in animal protection complete with a value chain that will increase the quality and hygiene of livestock in terms of beef and milk production, increased quality of feeding and access to animal care and private sector participation in commercial pasture production by way of investments.

"Other gains are job creation, access to credit facilities, security for pastoral families and curtailment of cattle rustling.

"Stripped of the politics and howling that has attended the recent comments, there is no government plan to seize state land, colonize territory or impose Ruga on any part of the federation. Government has made it clear time and again that the programme is voluntary.

"So far, twelve states have applied to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, making lands available for the take-off of the scheme in their states. This number is sufficient for the pilot scheme.
"Unfortunately, some state governments that have not signified interest in the scheme and, therefore, are not on the invitation list have been misleading people that the Federal Government is embarking on a scheme to take away their lands.

"Mostly, these are state leaders that have no explanation to offer their people for continued non-payment of workers' salaries. It is true that government at the centre has gazetted lands in all states of the federation but because the idea is not to force this programme on anyone, the government has limited the take-off to the dozen states with valid requests.

"We urge states to join the Federal Government at the centre in encouraging all sides to these conflicts to make efforts towards finding a peaceful resolution.

"As we seek a permanent solution to these unwanted conflicts, efforts must be made to ensure that no innocent person faces any kind of deprivation or loss of right and freedom under our laws."

Workers Set To Begin Nationwide Strike July 3

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:34 AM PDT

Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) are set to commence a nationwide strike on Wednesday, July 3, after the expiration of a two-week strike ultimatum issued by the union on June 13 over non-payment of stevedoring contractors.

Mr Abdul-Waheed Adeyanju, the President-General of MWUN made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday.

According to him, the leadership of the union has directed that members of the union shall withdraw services throughout the nation's seaports effective from 06.00 hours on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.

The President-General of MWUN said that the two-week notice issued on this subject lapsed on Friday, June 28, saying that there was no indication that the issue was being addressed.

He said that the union had given the International Oil Companies (IOCs) two weeks' notice concerning the matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria NAN (NAN) reports that the union gave a two-week ultimatum on June 13 pleading with the Federal Government to urge IOCs to pay government-appointed stevedoring contractor monies being owed.

Adeyanju had urged the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport to look into the issue so that dockworkers could be paid their salaries and wages.

He said that failure to pay government-appointed stevedoring contractors for jobs done had made it impossible for their workers to be paid salaries.

According to him, the situation had led to untimely death of members.

"Dear stakeholders, we want to use this medium to intimate you and the Federal Government of the non-payment of the stevedoring wages to dockworkers by the International Oil Companies (IOCs) operating in Nigeria.

"On June 1, 2018, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) appointed stevedoring contractors to provide stevedoring services at various off-shore jetties and on-shore locations to the International Oil Companies and other operators.

"It will be necessary to inform you that NPA had held several meetings with these operators to grant access to the government-appointed stevedoring contractors, process their invoices, and effect payment,'' Adeyanju said.

According to him, unfortunately, the operators refused to comply with NPA's directive one year after the stevedoring contractors were appointed.

"We commend the managing director and management of NPA for the efforts they had made to compel the IOCs to engage the services of appointed stevedores and registered dockworkers in their stevedoring operations.

"A stakeholders' meeting was held on Feb. 28, 2018 organised by NPA in Lagos to sensitise IOCs, jetty owners, and terminal owners,'' Adeyanju said.

NAN reports that the NPA management made it clear that in line with Section 27 OF NIMASA Act, 2007 only government-appointed stevedores and registered dockworkers are empowered by law to solely handle, discharge and embark on loading operations at the ports, jetties and oil platforms.

Adeyanju wondered why the IOCs refused to cooperate with the newly-appointed stevedoring contractors since the modus operandi remained the same.

The union boss said that while dockworkers were awaiting the payment of their wages, they could no longer meet their family obligations like payment of house rents, children's school fees and hospital bills, among others.

Adeyanju said, "We can no longer continue to watch our members die prematurely because of the attitude of the IOCs.''

Army Chief Buratai, To Coordinate War Against Boko Haram As He Relocates To Maiduguri

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 08:31 AM PDT

Lt. General Tukur Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, has relocated to Maiduguri, Borno State, to personally coordinate the war efforts against Boko Haram, following the recent set back experienced in the hands of the insurgents.

Buratai, has also implored his men and officers to always open up to him about challenges they are facing on the war front, which may be unknown to him.

This is coming as troops killed some terrorists and destroyed their camps in Gwoza, Borno State.

Buratai, who recently lamented the poor commitment of officers and men to the war against insurgency, which he said contributed to recent setbacks in the anti-terror campaign, asked the troops to feel free to tell him about the challenges hindering their performances, This Day reports.

The army boss gave the advice during a no-holds-barred interactive session with troops during a durbar organised for the troops on Thursday.

RELATED:  BOKO HARAM: No Army Can Have Enough Equipment For Its Operations – COAS

"He requested them to open up to him in case of any problem or issue that he needs to know and address.

"He conveyed the appreciation of Mr. President, Commander in Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari for their commitment, sacrifices and loyalty to the nation", Army spokesman, Col Sagir Musa, said.

According to the Army spokesman, a total of 300 troops drawn from the various units and formations across the theatre command attended the occasion, where, as a rare privilege, troops freely interacted one-on-one with the Chief of Army Staff.

Musa stated that "at the event, without any restriction, troops were allowed to sincerely bare their minds on issues bothering them either as a group or individually, especially on professional matters like administration, welfare, logistics and general operational situation including progress and challenges".

Buratai commended the troops for their gallantry and sacrifices and enjoined them to be more robust and unyielding in the fight to end terrorism in the North-east Nigeria.

Instructively, the Chief of Army Staff used the opportunity to remind the troops of the expectations of Nigerians as to their ability to keep the country safe, saying "as an army, we must be able to meet or surpass it".

Meanwhile, troops have killed insurgents and destroyed terrorists' camps in Gwoza, Borno State.

The army said soldiers of 152 Task Force Battalion, under 21 Special Armoured Brigade, in conjunction with some Civilian Joint Task Force members, embarked on intensive patrols and clearance operations to Nbaga and Gero villages where troops came in contact with the terrorists at Ngaba village.

"The sudden attack of terrorists' camps, simultaneous and swift employment of voluminous coordinated fire power bombardments led to serious destruction of the terrorists' camps, which forced the criminals to flee their hideouts in disarray, while an unconfirmed number of the bandits were effectively extirpated", Muse said.

He added: "Eight women and six children were extricated and freed from the terrorists, while their (terrorists) makeshift camps were totally destroyed.

"The following items were captured: three Ak 47 rifles, five bicycles and one terrorists' flag. The liberated women and children will be handed over to the appropriate agency for further necessary action".

According to him, the military action followed reinvigorated operational strategies and robust, aggressive and dynamic counter terrorism operations injected into the Theatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole by Buratai.

He said troops have continued to successfully sustain aggressive long range mobile fighting patrols, raids, searches and ambushes which resulted in the recent successes recorded.

I cut-off easily, so I don't know if I get married it is going to last a month, unless the guy is f**king crazy and good to go. There was a time I had a boyfriend. I was cool with this dude and he wasn't even giving me plenty money and all that.

One day, a man just came into the house and was like 'oh, this girl? You will not marry her-o'. I was angry and was like 'who the hell wants to marry your son?'"
