When the Nigerian government calculated the entertainment industry as part of the 2013 GDP, there was an increase from $270 billion to $510 billion. That entertainment industry was a sum of Nollywood, the music industry and the art industry. There is potential in an industry with an audience of over 100 million people. Equally, Nigerians keep spending a killing at cinemas that are not nearly as enough to cater to the viewers. But sadly, a crushing lack of quality productions continue to inhibit the industry. For years, we have known that asides the problems of terribly financed and produced movies, we also have well-documented problems of piracy, lack of funding, terrible stories and scripting, terribly trained actors, poor directors and godfatherism. While we document and never create a roadmap to combat these problem, foreign movies continue to soar in influence on the Nigerian populace. To put it quite simply, Hollywood, Bollywood, Latino TV Shows, and even South East Asian movies either have everything or most of the things our movies lack. On Sunday, July 21, 2019, an interview of Nigerian actor and politician, Desmond Olushola Elliott surfaced on Hip TV. He dropped his two cents on the matter of improving Nollywood movies. To him, banning foreign movies will do the trick. He likened it to how the federal government banned rice. In his words and after stating a first point, he said, "Secondly, they need to consciously and intentionally focus on improving this industry. Treat it like you're importing rice... You ban all foreign content, make it difficult for all foreign content to come in, so your local content can grow. "And then, you need to support (financially) the music industry, you need to support the film industry... even the comic industry as well..." To end his hot take, he highlighted good points on lack of funding. First, we need to admit that he has the interest of the industry at heart. His approach is just faulty. Secondly, we have to admit that he has some persuasive validation for his purist analogies. When the Federal Government banned rice, the locally produced rice markets have emerged and are booming. In China, a lot of globally accepted brands like Facebook are rejected for purist reasons and to prevent 'espionage.' In their absence, local Chinese companies like Weibo have thrived. To him, he probably feels like banning foreign content will force people to face Nollywood and cure its ills. He has a point, however crooked it is. The only problem is that he forgets that China is a communist state and rice is not film. Rice is food, movies are mostly product. To put things into context, the rice industry isn't confronted with as much problems as Nollywood. Agriculture is a Nigerian reality to start with. Nollywood is a ridiculous problem with improper grounding that created problems which continue to fester. Even with the ban on rice, illegal importation of rice is still in full swing. Banning foreign movies in Nigeria will be like the terribly-thought out American prohibition on liquor which unleashed the demon of smuggling and created rich men of illegality. Asides that, a total ban on foreign movies in Nigeria will never truly happen with the internet. Fixing Nollywood requires a more pragmatic approach than an autocratic, purist measure that will neither hold water nor save the industry. To save Nollywood, we need to educate producers on their role in flooding the market with terrible quality that frustrates its audience. Then, we address the problem of improper funding. Moreover, the world has grown enough that local and foreign movies can coexist in any space and generate revenue without affecting each other. Bollywood and South-East Asia is testament to this. Otedola's decision to take care of the 'October 1' actor's medical bills is not out of place considering his recent gesture to ex-Super Eagles player and coach, Christian Chukwu, who also had health challenges. In a tweet on Monday, July 22, 2019, at 10:17 AM, the billionaire boss of Geregu Power Plc confirmed the claims. In an official statement released on Femi Otedola, has undertaken to take care of the medical bills of veteran actor, Sadiq Daba. Here's why Otedola is footing Sadiq Daba's medical expenses Otedola says Sadiq Daba created good memories for him Otedola in his statement says one of the reasons he decided to foot the medical expenses of Sadiq Daba is because he created good memories for him. "For me, taking care of Sadiq's medical expenses is my little way of showing appreciation and gratitude for the good memories he created for me and others in the past." He went forward to say, "I must say that even though I don't know Mr. Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production "Cock Crow at Dawn" which I used to watch while growing up."  How Otedola heard about Sadiq Daba's ailment Reacting to how he heard about Daba's ailment, Otedola said he only learned about it a few days back. Otedola's reaction to Sadiq Daba's ailment The Geregu Power Plc boss' reaction to one of his favourite TV stars' ailment was a mix of nostalgia and sadness. He said, "I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his health again after his challenges from prostate cancer two years ago. "I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills." Daba has made an impression on Otedola Otedola says the ailing Daba is an icon who should have gotten all accolades and recognition. "In other climes, the likes of Sadiq Daba and other actors who more or less paved the way for the entertainment industry in Nigeria (which is touted as the 3rd largest movie in the world) would be celebrated as icons and due recognition would be accorded to them. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him," Otedola wrote. Sadiq Daba survived prostate cancer in 2017 In 2017, Daba traveled to the United Kingdom for the treatment of leukaemia and prostate cancer. The Supreme Court's refusal to succumb to the pressure by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to review and reverse its "lawful and well-founded judgment, voiding the participation of the APC and its candidates in Zamfara state in the last general elections, has been hailed by the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday.In a statement issued in Abuja, by Kola Ologbondiyan, it's National Publicity Secretary, said the Apex Court doing so, has once again saved the nation from a huge constitutional crisis "that could have devastated our constitutional democracy and corporate existence as a nation."The PDP described the demand by the APC to the Supreme Court as blasphemous, blackmail as well as a measured landmine set by APC leaders in their desperation to ambush and destroy the integrity of the apex court, The Tribune reports.The statement added: "The motive of the APC leaders is to ultimately sequester the institution of the judiciary and foist a totalitarian order on our polity."It is also instructive to note that by asking the Supreme Court to embark on a journey to nowhere, the APC clearly sought to subvert our democratic system and surreptitiously force on Nigerians, a system that is completely alien to our constitutional democracy and outside the confines and dictates of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).RELATED: Sagay Calls On APC To Return To Court On Zamfara, Rivers "APC's demand is a direct threat to our democracy, peace and stability of our nation and shows its unwillingness, as a party, to abide by the rule of law. While Mike seems to be much-loved by fans, Tacha appears to rub some viewers off wrongly due to the attitude she displays on screen. On Saturday, July 20, the housemates held their regular night party and they all seemed to be having fun. However, things soon turned sour after the party as Tacha and Mike had a situation. Tacha used abusive words on Mike severally as she eventually shoved him out of her way. The cause of the altercation is not known but Tacha appeared upset that the guys got drunk after the party. In expressing her anger, she insulted Mike, pushed him out of her way and threw tissue paper on his face. Well, the video has since gone viral on social media and Mike's wife, Perri Shakes-Drayton has reacted to it. According to her, she loves and admires how Mike handled the situation. She added that if it were someone else, the outcome might have been worse. Davido and his personal assistant are allegedly being sued for fraudulently obtaining the sum of N4, 000,000.00 only from an American based Nigerian born upcoming artist Andre- Tejiri Ochuko Ibhihwiori In the label of Always on Cash Records. The matter which came up for mentioning on the 23rd of May, 2019 as No 16 on the case list at Magistrate Court 2 Igbosere. Listed as Defendants in the suit marked MCL/702/19 are: David Adedeji Adeleke (Davido) – his Personal Assistant: Busari Idris Temitiope (Alias Aloma) and; Davido Music Worldwide Limited music label. Davido and his management allegedly collected the money as fee to feature in a musical collabo with artist Tjay sometime in January, 2019 but have since then failed to either make himself available for the music collabo or refund the money. When the matter was called, none of the Defendants, including Davido was in Court, neither were they represented by their lawyers. Counsel to the Claimant Alabh George Turnah, (MON) informed the Court that the Defendants according to the bailiff of the Court, refused to accept service of the originating processes and pleaded the Court for an order for substituted service, which the Court granted. Davido may into full litigation or seek out of Court settlement with the Claimant who is already asking for 15% interest on the principal sum of N4,000,000.00 from the date of payment to any date that the sum is finally liquidated. The case has been adjourned to the "23rd of august 2019" for report of service and commencement of trial.  | ||
