How Many Calories Are In Chicken Breast?

Posted: 04 Jul 2019 01:00 AM PDT

How Many Calories Are In Chicken Breast?
Don't get me wrong, I'm very much here for the ever-growing number of meat alternatives. But after a long AF day at the office, a quick trip to the market can now easily turn into a headache simply by trying to pick an A+ protein for dinner. A simple solution (for non-vegans and vegetarians)? Go for chicken breast.

When it comes to lean proteins , chicken breast is queen. It offers a whopping 28 grams of protein per 3 oz serving, which is higher than what you'd get steak, pork, roasted turkey, lamb, and even rotisserie chicken, says Laura Iu , RD, a nutritionist in New York City. "Plus, because it's typically skinless, it also has lower sodium content and fat content compared to chicken with the skin and other types of meat." Bow down, other proteins. Bow down.

Plus, it's pretty versatile-you can grill it, roast it, toss it over a green salad, shred and put it into tacos or wraps, or even skewer it and smother it in peanut sauce.

Given that you're eating it all the time, you've probably wondered about chicken breast calories. Is it really as good for you as it seems?

How many calories in a chicken breast?

According to the USDA , a 3.5-ounce serving of roasted chicken breast without the skin contains:
  • Calories: 165
  • Protein: 31 g
  • Fat: 4 g
  • Saturated fat: 1 g
  • Carbohydrates: 0 g
  • Fiber: 0 g
  • Sodium: 74 mg
Now consider the differences when you keep the skin on :
  • Calories: 197
  • Protein: 30 g
  • Fat: 8 g
  • Saturated fat: 2 g
  • Carbohydrates: 0 g
  • Fiber: 0 g
  • Sodium: 71 mg
As you can see, keeping the skin on doubles the fat and saturated fat content, but adds a modest number of calories-about 30.

One key thing to remember is that these numbers are for a 3.5-ounce serving. That's slightly more than half of the average chicken breast. This is what you'll get for a whole, boneless, skinless chicken breast :
  • Calories: 284
  • Protein: 53 g
  • Fat: 6 g
  • Saturated Fat: 1.7 g
  • Carbohydrates: 0 g
  • Fiber: 0 g
  • Sodium: 127 mg
So if you eat the whole thing, you'll be getting a LOT more protein-but also way more calories and fat. (Fun fact: Chickens have quadrupled in size since the 1950s, according to research published in the journal Poultry Science .)

What about chicken breast's overall nutrition?
Chicken breast obviously has a ton of protein. But it also offers 6 percent of your daily value of iron per 3.5-ounce serving, which helps your body carry oxygen throughout the body and supports immune system function.

Research also shows that consuming chicken breast is associated with a lower risk of being overweight and developing heart disease and diabetes, per a study in the journal Food & Nutrition Research .

The study authors also noted that chicken breast offers an especially concentrated amount of nutrients, including B vitamins and zinc, for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. (Good to know whether youre in that stage of life or not). But, wait, that's not all! It's also a good source of bone-boosting vitamin D and calcium , according to Iu.

So rest assured, chicken is not overrated. Now, all you need to do is nail down the healthiest way to make it and you'll be set for life.

So, what is the healthiest way to cook chicken breast?

First thing's first, a quick reminder: One of the many perks of this powerhouse poultry is that it's super versatile, meaning it can be cooked in a number of different ways and recipes.

But, of course, there are a few cooking methods that stand out as the best, such as grilling, poaching or boiling, and baking. Grilling or baking chicken breast typically requires minimal oil, thereby limiting the use of any additional fats. And when you poach or boil it, you're not using any oil or fats-plus the chicken is boiled in water on low heat, so there is minimal loss of nutrients, Iu explains.

Experts also encourage taking the time before firing up the grill, stove, or oven to trim your chicken to remove any-head's up for weak stomached readers!-tendons, blood spots, and fat.

While, yes, removing the skin will allow for chicken with the fewest cals and fat, cooking with the skin has its fair share of perks as well. "Keeping the skin on will add a lot of flavor and helps retain moisture and juiciness," says Taylor Chan, MS, RD, CPT, dietitian and personal trainer in TKTKT . "Whether to keep if on or not all depends on whats important to each person."

Pro tip? Cook with the skin for enhanced flavor but nix it before you dig in.

Finally, what are the best ways to eat chicken breast?
With a fork and knife, of course. Okay, okay, fiiiiine, that's it for the dad jokes-promise.

The "best ways" really depend on you, your health goals, flavor preferences, etc. But, per Chan, it's always a good idea to keep it fun and try new preparation methods such as using a spice rub one night or a new BBQ sauce for another. "Food should be enjoyable and not feel like a chore. So try to get away from the monotony of chicken + rice + broccoli that so many people get trapped in," Chan says. (But, hey, if you're like me and actually love a basic chicken and broc night, then def keep at it).

Here is one helpful thing to do if your partner shows signs of unhappiness

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:30 PM PDT

PS: If it's more than your control, it could be signs of depression, and that is beyond you. Please seek help from professionals on this.

We all know relationships and marriages are about experiencing the most happiness and positive vibes possible. So when your partner is going through a phase of unhappiness, it is all normal to ask questions.

Generally though, as a good partner, your questions will understandably be with a view to improving your boyfriend or girlfriend's mood and trying to see how to restore their happiness.

Expectedly, you'd want to direct those questions to the unhappy partner in order to know what to do to make them happy again. Sometimes however, the answer to your partner's happiness isn't really with them, but with you. And it is more useful to ask yourself questions, to see if somehow, you are part or the whole reason for their moodiness.

This is important because self-assessment is one thing all couples need at regular intervals of their relationship. The duty to always be the best possible version of yourself is ever-present on you and your partner. So whenever your partner shows elongated signs of unhappiness and nothing you do seems to cheer them up or lift their mood, you need to ask yourself if you have been good and proffer for yourself honest answers.

PS: If it's more than your control, it could be signs of depression, and that is beyond you. Please seek help from professionals on this.

This could be the difference between having a partner who is perpetually sad and one who is happy and satisfied.

So you should ask yourself; am I really doing this or that in the manner my babe likes it? Have I been paying him or her enough attention? Do I say I love you enough? Do I meet their emotional needs?

You may be asking yourself; why do I have to do any introspection when they can just easily communicate with me on anything I could have done to wrong them in any way.

The answer to that is this: when a partner repeatedly communicates his or her worries and dissatisfaction and nothing gets done about it, there's a likelihood that they'll not say anything about it anymore.

They'll likely choose to remain silent, unhappy and maybe resentful instead of communicating about the problem because over time, all their complaints and communication have fallen on deaf ears and never yielded any good result.

What this further establishes is the necessity of humble self-assessment in relationships. Never feel too big to assess yourself, note your own errors and change for the good of your relationship even without being told by your partner.

That could be all you need to make your partner move away from a gloomy, depressed person to a happy sweetheart.

Do you know that Male contraceptive blocks sperm?

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:00 PM PDT

A male contraceptive capable of blocking sperm from leaving the penis during ejaculation is being developed by scientists, it has been reported.

Male contraceptive blocks sperm in men
The yet to be named drug, being developed by researchers at the Monash University, said to be 100 percent effective, will likely be ready in the next five years.

It blocks two key proteins in the brain that are responsible for releasing swimmers during a male orgasm, the Mailonline has reported.

It is also said to have the ability to boost libido by dilating blood vessels – exactly how Viagra works.

Lead researcher Dr Sab Ventura, according to Mailonline, has announced that trial will begin if the next stage of drug development proves successful."We are moving closer to developing a convenient, safe and effective, non-hormonal oral male contraceptive that can be readily reversed," he said.

He continued: "We aim to do this by developing a combination of two drugs that simultaneously block sperm transport rather than disrupt sperm development or maturation.

"With this non-hormonal approach, sperm are unaffected so the contraception is likely to be readily reversible once the medication has been stopped."

Early laboratory tests shows the drug has no impact on sexual desire.

And that the preliminary trials also showed sperm remained healthy and viable, should men express a desire for children in the future.

Why I’m no longer talking to slim people about body positivity

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:30 PM PDT

Why I'm no longer talking to slim people about body positivity
As my good sis Reni Eddo- Lodge is no longer talking to white people about race, I am no longer talking to slim people about body positivity.

The movement has officially been hijacked and those it was originally created for, the outliers, find themselves once again, on the fringes. Like many popular references, the meaning of the phrase 'body positivity' has become increasingly distorted as its popularity increases.

What started out as a political movement to protect fat bodies has become synonymous with self-love and in doing so, has narrowed the window of acceptance for many plus-size bodies, if not slammed it shut altogether.

The body positivity movement began as a political movement that was started as a fat liberation movement by plus size women of colour. It was created in response to the mounting social disregard for bodies that didn't fit into accepted beauty norms. It was created as a means to protect and uplift the bodies that simply were not seen as 'beautiful'.

Fat women have now found themselves decentered from a movement that they created and fatphobia is still rampant. With our safe spaces fast diminishing and being overrun, where else is there left for fat bodies to go?

A body positivity movement that does not center fat people is simply yet another place for slim people to feel good about their bodies in a society that already celebrates them. There must be a distinction between self love and body positivity.

In order to understand the importance of the body positive movement to marginalised bodies, we must first understand its origins. The body positivity movement has roots in the fat acceptance movement which began in the 1960's. It was a social change movement and aimed to change the anti-fat bias and reprogram society's attitude towards fat people. Sociologist Charlotte Cooper has argued that the history of the fat activist movement is best understood in waves, similar to the feminist movement, with which she believes it is closely tied. Susie Orbach, a British psychotherapist and author, argued that popularised ideas such as dieting and body hatred are oppressive and that body dysmorphia and eating disorders are rooted in misogyny.

In a similar vein, Cooper believed that fat activists have suffered similar waves of activism followed by burnout, with activists in a following wave often unaware of the history of the movement, resulting in a lack of continuity. However, the body positivity movement could be seen as a resurgence of all these long-forgotten theories

Charlotte goes on to talk about the dominant model in which, 'fatness is contextualised as pitiful and/or many of the following: lacking in moral fibre, diseased, potentially diseased, greedy and lazy, not just ugly but disgusting, pathetic, underclass, worthless, a repulsive joke, a problem that needs to be treated and prevented.'

Whilst the movement was widely criticised for promoting obesity, it in fact sought to humanise fat people and protect them from a society that was fundamentally opposed to their existence.

In essence, body positivity is the radical act of loving your body even when society tells you not to. The sad truth is, worldwide, women who are not slender, white (or light-skinned), and cis experience devastating discrimination at some point in their lives. Women of colour, LGBTQ+ women, and women with different body shapes and sizes are constantly dictated to about how they should look, how they express themselves, their sexuality, femininity and beauty.

However, body positivity gives a much-deserved middle finger to everyone who reinforces those harmful and ignorant tropes and in doing so, puts limits on the way people live their lives. It's a recognition of the fact that every single body is deserving of love and respect and a necessary reminder that woman's body should never be a vehicle for discrimination, judgment and abuse.

The Fat Acceptance Movement and all its waves were an important segue into the body positivity movement which dominates popular culture today. Now, the movement serves to help people with marginalised bodies feel entitled to self-love, something that had previously been reserved for people in privileged (e.g. thin, white, fit) bodies.

As a fat, black woman, growing up was a constant battle between my insecurities and my notions of self-worth. I learned pretty quickly that I was not the standard of beauty and struggled to see 'myself' in celebrities and people celebrated in the media. As a 28 year-old woman, it gladdens me to see the transformative effects of the body positive movement both personally and to society at large.

Finally, those of us who grew up on the edge of everything have a safe space to celebrate ourselves. If that's a strange notion to you then know that you are the rule and not the exception. Also understand that means that the movement was not created for you to participate because you were never excluded from the mainstream narrative in the first place.

Social media also has a huge part to play in the devaluing of the movement. Bitch Media's Evette Dionne explored that aspect of the movement (among many other things) in an article called "The Fragility of Body Positivity: How a Radical Movement Lost Its Way." In the piece, she explains how the body positive movement has ended up isolating people who don't fall into a certain category that it promotes.

"The body-positive media economy centers these affirming, empowering, let-me-pinch-a-fat-roll-to-show-how-much-I-love-myself stories while failing to actually challenge institutions to stop discriminating against fat people. More importantly, most of those stories center thin, white, cisgender, heterosexual women who have co-opted the movement to build their brands. Rutter has labeled this erasure 'Socially Acceptable Body Positivity.'"

She continues, "On social media, it actually gets worse for fat bodies: We're not just being erased from body positivity, fat women are being actively vilified. Health has become the stick with which to beat fat people with [sic], and the benchmark for whether body positivity should include someone."

Huge corporations use 'body positivity' in the name of marketing without really taking the time to understand what the movement stands for and also end up watering down the message in their campaigns. Suddenly, women see size 10 women in a body positive campaign and believe its for them, it isn't.

With so many mixed messages being put out there, the salvation of the body positivity movement lies with individuals. Like many political movements, you must question the validity of your existence within that space or whether you are simply taking up unnecessary room. You can be an ally and support a movement without centering yourself in it. Until people learn to take more accountability for the space they take up and where, we will continue to run into these issues.

So until, these much-needed boundaries can be re-established and these safe spaces restored, I am no longer speaking to slim people about body positivity.

Mercy Johnson-Okojie serves tea on red flags and what women really want in relationships

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:00 PM PDT

What men want from relationships, what women want, what people generally want and the things that make romantic relationships tick are simple enough, aren't they?

The list seems generic enough when you think about it – people want honesty, love, care, respect, commitment, and all the good stuff that romantic relationships are meant to come with. But in reality, the unhappiness people experience tells a totally different story. It would appear that what people expect is not what they get. For many, expectations and reality rarely connect, if ever.

Superstar actress, Mercy Johnson, thinks this is because no relationship is ever perfect, and even the best ones aren't all roses and sunny days.

In an exclusive chat with Pulse where she spoke on a range of things from her upcoming new cook show, to movies, as well as what she's been up to recently, the veteran movie star also let us in on some of her thoughts concerning dating and relationships.

On what women want from men, Mercy Johnson-Okojie says;

"I have a problem with us pegging it to one thing. Because people have needs. It's like one of the hardest institutions ever. For me, I want a lot of things and it is never perfect or rosy anywhere. I want commitment. I want honesty, I want us to work at it together. It shouldn't be like a one-sided thing."

She says that she understands that different things work for different couples and that a formula that works in one may not necessarily work in another relationship, but if there's anything she has learnt personally, it's that forgiveness has to have a top position in any relationship that is to last in happiness.

"You know, when it comes to an issue or an institution like marriage, I say different things work for people differently so I can't say these are the three things people who look up to me would want to begin to look out for.

"I say different marriages have different ethics that work for them. You know, one thing that I have learnt after the death of my mum, would be that one thing that every marriage needs would be forgiveness.

"That's one thing that will hold every home together because offense will always come. Offenses always come but your ability to look past them, you know, is what makes you move from one day to the next."

And on watching out for red flags and knowing what to avoid before committing to a man, the super-mum has an interesting thing to say.

"They don't change. So if what he does before is something you don't like, I don't think you should stay because they don't change. It'll only get worse when he's more comfortable.

"So, basically, I'll say men don't change. That character he exhibits is just who he really is. Like, the monster you see at the end of it all, is who they really are. So if you know that you can't stick to that attitude, then just walk away."

If you love this our exclusive interview with Mercy Johnson, you'll be even more intrigued by this one with Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde.

Fitness has become a religion for housemates in the BBNaija 2019 House

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Fitness has become a religion for housemates in the BBNaija 2019 House
The morning workouts have become an integral part of the Big Brother Naija reality TV show since it kicked off in 2006.

One of the activities Big Brother does not joke with when new housemates are admitted into his house is fitness.

From the ex-housemates who participated in the show in 2006 to the current 21 housemates, the workout session has become part of the morning routine.

Though it's just the third day in the house, the 21 housemates of the BBNaija 2019 tagged 'Pepper Dem' is already feeling the morning workout sessions.

For every BBNaija edition, one or two housemates lead the house in dishing out instructions on morning workouts and this year is no different.

In BBNaija season 1, Sandra Osaigbovo, Ebuka Obi Uchendu, and Gideon Okeke were some of the housemates that led the morning workouts. The housemates were drilled by a fitness coach all through their time in the house, which was situated in Nigeria.

In BBNaija season 2 tagged 'See Gobbe,' Kemen, Bassey, Bally, and Bisola were some of the housemates that the audience looked out for during the workout sessions.

Just like the first season, a professional fitness coach was in charge of drilling the housemates all through their stay in the house. The housemates were drawn out of their bed with Big Brother's buzzer after which they take on intense workout sessions.

For season 3 of BBNaija tagged Double Wahala, Tobi, Angel, Leo, Miracle, Teddy A, and Alex was at the forefront of the workout sessions.

On Day 81 of season 3, the housemates were visited by BBNaija ex-Housemate and fitness coach, Sandra Osaigbovo for a very special and intense workout. Osaigbovo was the fourth runner up to the first BBNaija winner, Katung Aduwak, and has since grown to become Nigeria's top Zumba instructor.

Though heavily pregnant when she visited, Osaigbovo, well known as Sandy, pushed the housemates of BBNaija season 3 to go beyond their own limitations.

Sandra Osaigbovo's body conditioning exercises will most definitely be remembered in the Big Brother Naija history.

The workout sessions in the Big Brother House has become one of the most recurring activities which all housemates had to go through during their time in the house.

In the current BBNaija edition tagged 'Pepper Dem,' Mike leads the housemates in dishing out workout instructions. Mike is ably joined by Gedoni, Tuoyo, Nelson, Frodd, and Ike.

A quick flashback on the Big Brother Africa - which had nine seasons - also shows that fitness and workout sessions are an integral part of the reality TV show.

During the Big Brother Africa season 7 tagged 'StarGame,' housemates were provided with sporting tools that include the Flexi-Bar and XCO-Trainer to get them back into shape.

Guy Kabeya Fundayi, personal trainer to the Big Brother Africa contestants explained that the training kits were chosen for the show as both have remarkable effects on the simultaneous improvement of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, reaction times, flexibility, coordination, core strength, and fat burning.

Fundayi went further to say, 'Most importantly, the contestants are going to have the time of their lives by reaching their fitness goals in a shortened period of time.'

Just like the Head Of House competition, Daily tasks and Diary room sessions are fixed activities at the Big Brother reality TV show, the fitness or workout sessions have become a synonymous activity.

Don Jazzy Reacts to 2019 BBNaija Reality Show, calls it "Importation Of Housemates"

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 04:30 AM PDT

After the start of the Season 4 of the Big Brother Naija tagged FORGET WAHALA and the unveiling of its housemates yesterday, 30th June, some Nigerians have accused the popular reality show organizers of importing housemates.

Mavins record label boss, Don Jazzy has also reacted to the possibility of the Big Brother reality show importing housemates to the house as believed by many people.

Reno Omokri, Daddy Freeze And Japhet Omojuwa’s Debate On Busola Dakolo’s Rape Allegations

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Omojuwa accused Reno Omokri of receiving bribes from COZA pastor, Biodun Fatoyinbo, hence the reason Reno Omokri defended the pastor over the rape allegation against him by Busola Dakolo.

Daddy Freeze however countered Omojuwa's claim, stating that Reno Omokri may have defended Fatoyinbo for his conscience and adherence to scriptural guidelines.

According to the media personality, those attacking Reno Omokri never asked if the former Presidential spokesperson who fights his friends when he believes they are wrong, took money to campaign for Leah Sharibu's release. Daddy Freeze further advised that we should all be slow in accusing one another, especially when there is conflict of opinions of sensitive matters.

He wrote;

Reno that even fights his friends when he believes they are wrong…. Is this the same Reno they are now accusing of collecting money from Fatoyinbo? Is that not how they said he was paid to do #FreeLeahSharibu?

Guys, not every Nigerian does things for money. Some do it for conscience and for adherence to scriptural guidelines. Reno can be quite passionate, while the issue at hand is extremely delicate.

However, let's be slow to accuse one another of being compromised, should a conflict of opinions on sensitive matters arise. ~FRZ

Latest Issue: BBNaija 2019 'Mercy Eke is the housemate whose body remains her biggest asset

Posted: 03 Jul 2019 01:00 AM PDT

Of all the 21 housemates of the Big Brother Naija 'Pepper Dem,' Mercy Eke is certain her body and face are the right features for her to win the N30 million cash prize and N30 million worth of gifts.

BBNaija 2019 Mercy Eke
Mercy Eke is the housemate who is proud of her bodily features and says her body is her biggest asset.

"The things that will make me win, I think should be my body and my face. The 2019 winner looks like me, Mercy Eke, your girl."

Mercy is curvaceous and she readily flaunt her body when given the opportunity. In her stay in the Big Brother Naija house, housemates and audience have been treated to a good view of her sexiness.

Mercy has her eyes on the prize but she wants to have so much fun, party hard and consume as much alcohol as possible while in the house.

From her chats with her co-housemates to flirting with Gedoni and wowing male housemates at the jacuzzi with her curvaceous body, Mercy is living up to her expectations. And of course, she has a considerable amount of alcohol with her consumption of Legend extra stout in the last three days.

Mercy admits her weirdest pleasure are her titties while revealing that the craziest thing she's ever done and gotten away with was when she kissed her crush to win a game.

However, she has had her heart broken but the most painful heart was when her ex asked her best friend out.

"Yes, I have been heartbroken many times but the one that hurts more was when my ex was asking my best friend out, that really got me," she said.

The video vixen, who says quite a number of people find it annoying when she picks her teeth revealed that the lowest point in her life was when she was denied a Chinese visa.

Mercy's joy knew no bounds when she visited Dubai in 2018. She said she skydived and the experience remains the most interesting.

"The most interesting place I have ever been to is Dubai because I did skydiving," she revealed.

The 26-year-old beauty says she wants the fame that comes with participating and winning the BBNaija, hence even with a million Dollars in her account, she will still audition for the show.

"Yes, I would. I want fame. The popularity is very important for my business," Mercy said.

The 'tatashe queen' as Mercy refers to herself, dislikes people who are proud and looks forward to starting her own fashion brand or label if she emerges the winner of BBNaija season 4.
