3 hot crews of 2019 you should know in Nigerian music

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:00 AM PDT

The crews include 30 BG, Starboy and the Zanku crew.

Crews are a part of contemporary music.

While the Rock 'n roll era didn't have crews to light up culture, Hip-Hop championed the idea of crews and made them cool - no, not (boy) bands, I mean crews. A crew can easily be mixed with a band or a group, but they're different.

While a band/group is bound together by their common goal to collectively make music, a crew is usually a bunch of individual acts - sometimes involving groups - bound together by a label, friendship or affiliation. For example, Migos is a group while Quality Control or YMCMB is a crew.

Since the NWA crew that consists of Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and DJ Yella became mainstream, we have seen crews like Death Row, No Limit, Rap-a-Lot, Cash Money, G-Unit, Shady Records, YMCMB and so forth.

On the Nigerian front, we have witnessed crews like the Storm Records, Mo'Hits, MAVIN, Chocolate City, YBNL, EME and so forth. While some of the prominent Nigerian crews have released albums, others have missed the opportunity to cement their place in the public consciousness.

Crews have since become few and far between in Nigeria, but here are the hottest crews of 2019 in Nigerian music;

3. Starboy

Yes, there's actually a crew there. It consists of artists/producers, Wizkid, Shaydee, Mut4y, Piper and Starboi Terri. The other member of the crew is Wizkid's friend, Rotimi Rude Boy. These days they're a bit obscure, but once in a while, you can find them walking on the beach or at parties whenever Wizkid pops into Nigeria.

2. 30 Billion Gang

The name comes off Davido's line from hit single, 'IF.' Nigerian rapper, Davido was initially signed to HKN Music. There, they had a crew that consists of Davido himself, his cousins, B-Red and Shina Rambo, and popular figures like Special Spesh.

But since he left HKN, he started his own record label, Davido Music Worldwide, home to Peruzzi, DJ Ecool, Mayorkun, Dremo and other acts. But due to his magnanimity and influence in the industry, another energetic and highly populated crew started under his watch. It was called, 30 Billion Gang.

You can find them hovering around Davido in public places, moving in copious numbers and making their presence felt. They're loyal to Davido because he has helped them in one way or another. At the 2018 Headies, they stormed the stage and didn't allow Mayorkun to deliver his speech upon winning The Next Rated Award.

Even when Davido journeys out of the country, they follow. Their members are mostly unknown, just like their membership. But a key member is Boda Shaggi.

3. The Zanku Gang

Calm down, that's not their name. But as they keep influencing Nigerian pop culture and garnering a fan base at an alarming rate, they need a name. They make swashbuckling music and do not care about political correctness.

Their life is about freedom either on social media or in real life. They're also talented and creative. A few days ago, what they did on social media was lick Ice Cream as 'Gelato,' a song by DJ Cuppy, which features one of their mainstays, Zlatan played in the background.

They have been around for a while. In 2017, Zlatan debuted his first major hit, 'Body' which features Olamide. Before then, he was a viral sensation, known for recording posting freestyles on his Instagram page. Two years prior, another mainstay of the Zanku Gang, Naira Marley was making waves in the UK with songs like 'Back To Work.'

2018 was their breakout year, but this time, there was still no crew. Naira Marley released the global World Cup anthem, 'Issa Goal' featuring Olamide and Lil Kesh. Zlatan created further songs with Olamide and released 'Jogor' which features Lil Kesh and Naira Marley. By this time, the mainstream had taken notice.

Naira followed it with the madness of 'Japa' and Zlatan championed the Z.A.N.K.U movement - a dance that has inspired pop culture in language and style. He also released 'O Sanle' featuring Davido and featured on 'Able God' by Chinko Ekun.

By 2019, Zlatan's stardom was sealed with the December 2018 number, 'Killin Dem' by Burna Boy and a string of other high profile features. He became the new king of the streets, handing out passes to anyone who wanted an in. Naira became the supporter of internet fraud who cared not what anybody wanted.

Notoriety increased and so did his penchant for making problematic, yet viral tunes - now, even a dance routine.

Their legend was sealed with their brush with the law in June 2019. Accidentally, the two rappers alongside Rahman Jago and Guccy Branch were arrested by members of the EFCC - the crew was popularized. Even Guccy Branch became a sensation while he was in jail.

They not only became media obsession for the next six weeks, they have since become the only crew that matters. You can catch them at events or mostly on Instagram. The crew now also includes viral dance sensation, Poco Lee and Nigeria's hottest producer, Rexxie.

GoodGirl LA talks about ‘La Confidential,’ leaving school, upbringing, ‘pretty privilege’ and new music

Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:30 PM PDT

She was funny and up, close and personal, she was fairly taller . She's laidback and a natural conversationalist.

GoodGirl LA's new EP, 'LA Confidential' will be released on all platforms on September 6, 2019.

"Hi everybody, my name is GoodGirl LA, and I'm a Nigerian superstar (laughs). I'm a singer, songwriter and all of that," she introduced herself.

She was also visibly happy - who wouldn't? A listening party for her EP held just two days prior. Here, it's like a weight just fell off her back.

She is GoodGirl LA, the afro-fusion princess. According to her, she has been singing since she could talk. She then developed her vocals by mimicking Whitney Houston to improve her notes.

Born Euphemia Ekwuma, while she studied for UTME and WASSCE, she'd do one for the books and then write music. To perfect her skills, she performed at valedictory services.

However, she wasn't always GoodGirl LA. Before that name, she was 'Laden.' But because her friends wanted to stylize 'Laden,' they shortened it to 'L.A' which was too vague. Realizing she has a good heart and that she is a good person, she took the good part of herself, merged it with 'LA' and became GoodGirl LA.

According to her, "(Being a GoodGirl) Is never really what it looks like. I don't really believe in the good and the bad thing. I feel like, just do your thing, man, as long as it makes you happy and it doesn't hurt someone else."

LA, the grateful
You might find her on your screen singing her heart out on 'Faraway,' 'Bless Me' or the new one, 'Pina.' Asides her obvious good looks, her voice will probably knock you out. She is one of those acts who sound even better live than they sound in the studio.

When asked how she felt, LA says, "Grateful. I think grateful is the right word. I remember wanting to record an EP. But then, I had to save up money to record one song; pay, mix and master everything.

"So, how do I then get to be found? I feel the time is perfect for what is happening and I'm also very excited about the new things I'm doing to be doing and working on. I'm also ready for what's next."

LA, the rebel
Born in Ajegunle, she left the University of Calabar and left home at 19 to pursue a career in music. But then, she was broke. At a point, GoodGirl LA ran a courier-esque service in Lagos to raise money. Other times, she would rally around friends. A few times, her parents chipped in.

She jokes that, "I had to pay for 'Faraway' (her 2018 single) four times. Shout-out to SynX… When I didn't have money, I'd buy food." At this time, she had a dream and she was willing to do everything reasonably possible to get her sound out - she did.

As of today, 'Faraway' and 'Bless Me' have a combined 445,000 views on YouTube. Looking back, the Cross River State native tells Pulse that she's surprised at some of the decisions she made just to make the dream work. "I didn't want to wait till I was 28 or 30 when people will be telling me I'm too old to wear bum shot (laughs)," she says.

When she left the University of Calabar, she left her property in school and had to waybill them to Lagos. On getting home, her Dad was adamant that she had to go back to school but her mom, a natural alto was supportive. She says, "African Parents can be funny. They thought I needed them till I started sending money home (Laughs)."

LA Confidential EP

"LA Confidential EP was me just wanting to bare out myself and talk about different things that have happened to me. You know, you can't really tell what someone is thinking (unless they tell you)… So, I wanted to just give people a feel of what's inside my head… when it comes to love, hustle and a lot of things. And literally, that's like every girl's story.

"'LA Confidential' is like me just giving out confidential information about stuff that has happened to me… And then the EP is eight different songs on like eight different sounds - nothing sounds like the other. I feel like I wanted to show - and portray - myself in different lights.

"It's like (I'm telling people that) I've shown what I can do. So, from here on, the sound will change and grow bigger, stronger and unpredictable… However, I still feel like I've not dropped it yet. I'm still waiting for September 6 (when 'LA Confidential EP' hits all platforms) to know that it's time to actually bring the real heat," the singer says.

After she got signed to The Zone Agency, the Osagie Osarenz-run management agency in the final quarter of 2018, talk commenced about an album. To LA, this represented synergy because she had been trying to get music out for years and even had - LA Confidential - a tentative title for it.

Of the songs that were recorded, 15 were chosen and those were chopped down to eight for the EP. Recording commenced in December, 2018 and ended in April, 2018. According to her, the creative process was organic.

Some songs were recorded in her living room and others in a hotel room. The inspiration for 'Bless Me' came on a toilet seat. And finally, she got to work with Leriq.

However, the EP is only a precursor to an album that is already in the works could drop later this year or early next year - depending on fan response to LA Confidential.

LA and the emotions

On LA Confidential EP, emotions and the authentic nature of those emotions took centre stage. Each song told a relatable story.

While discussing that, LA says, "To have a story is one thing. To incorporate them into the right melody is another thing. That ability has always been a part of me and my mom noticed it first when I was watching 'The Lion King' and I ended up doing it inadvertently. I guess that's what you call the gift of music."

She proceeded further to say that sometimes, the sound brings the story out of you. However, some of the emotional scenarios she sings about are not her personal experiences. Some are hypothetical and some are other peoples' experiences.

On which is harder, she says, "It depends. You will be surprised that even your own story can be hard to tell."

LA on Nigerian music

"The funny thing is I never see it as lamba. I don't see it as making lamba or this. I just see it as music. I listen to everything and I enjoy everything. I already have lamba music made y'all, so what are we going to do? That style of music came out of the street and the struggle and came out of love… That music came from how our country is.

"I grew up in Nigeria - I'm a Lagos girl. I was born in Ajegunle… It's Nigerian music to me. The music I made on 'LA Confidential EP' is Nigerian music. The music in my hard drive is Nigerian music. The music everyone else makes is Nigerian music. The zanku is obviously Nigerian music," she says.

In a country with a perpetual need for vision, LA is a breath of fresh air.

LA on pretty privilege and the downsides of being pretty

Pretty privilege is simply the tendency of beautiful people to get easier treatment than others. The idea of pretty privilege is either downplayed or denied. Instead, LA attacks talks about the downsides of being pretty.

She says, "Sometimes being pretty and looking bougie in the Nigerian industry could be a minus. You come through and they feel like you're not up and going as the guy. Sometimes, I work in the studio till 6 or 7 pm and people are surprised because it's not what they expect of girls… But I feel that stereotype is gone. It's 2019, guys. Even in the womb, they say I kicked like a boy… (Laughs).

"Sometimes you go to a show on the mainland and they're like 'Hey, fine girl!' Do you know how it's like to live with that? Sometimes, It feels already like a minus… But sometimes, I really like the shock and the surprise of when I get into the studio looking like this and then I open my mouth and sound another way… I think pretty privilege is not a thing.

"You always still have to earn it and work. It has to be good and as a matter of fact, you have to be twice better than the boy…"

LA also disagrees that there's male domination. She feels that while men need to inspire and include more women, sometimes, women have to be there to be included. On a final note, the 22-year-old says that we should support more women.

When asked whether she feels she's on course in her career, she says, "God doesn't make mistakes."

This means she feels she is right on time. Two days after this chat, she released 'Pina.'

Seun Kuti - "Next time Nigerians plan to beat up a politician abroad, I should be invited"

Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Seun Kuti is appealing to any group of Nigerians planning to beat up a politician to add him to their guest list.

The music star made this known while answering questions from Object TV concerning the recent attack on a popular Nigerian Senator, Ike Ekweremadu in Germany by members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB). According to him, he would be offended if an incident like that happens again and he is not invited to be part of it.

"What I would say is that next time any group of Nigerians are planning to beat up any Nigerian politician, and they don't let me know about it, I will be very offended. That is the only thing I have to say about that because I was in Europe. The more hands, the merrier," he said.

When asked what he would do when he gets invited, Seun Kuti ended it with a Yoruba parable which says ''The name that you want to give to your child is already in your stomach."

It is a known fact that Seun Kuti is one of the most vocal celebrities in Nigeria when it comes to social topics. He is never shy to call out the government over perceived inadequacies, a trait many feel he inherited from his late father and music icon, Fela Kuti.

Insecurity: Buhari Attacked By Aisha, Calls President Unprintable Names

Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:33 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari

Co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, advocacy group, Aisha Yesufu, has again attacked President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as incompetent, clueless and inept.

The advocacy group leader, who spoke against the deteriorating security situation in the country and the recent kidnap of three Ahmadu Bello University students also said that President Buhari was a failure.

According to a report by DAILY POST yesterday, three final year law students of ABU, Zaria were abducted. They were seized on the notorious Kaduna-Abuja Expressway Tuesday afternoon.

The Kaduna State Police Command, however, said, its operatives rescued the three students but however, added that three other persons were still being held by the kidnappers.

In a video, she shared on social media on Thursday, Mrs. Yesufu said, "When we say Mohammadu Buhari is incompetent, clueless and inept we are not insulting him. We are just saying it as it is.

"As the President and Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari has been incompetent, clueless, inept and a failure.

"The state of security today is heartbreaking. Did you hear of the ABU University students that were kidnapped? They should have been your children; they should have been you. Parents had to pay the ransom and they are back.

"I watched the video of one of the girls that were returned, she was crying. But do you know something? They (kidnappers) didn't ask if the incompetent Muhammadu Buhari was her (one of the victims) president; they didn't ask if she was APC, PDP, or whatever; they didn't ask if she was from the north, south or other parts of the country. they didn't ask whether she was a Christian or Muslim; or what tribe she was.

"They took her along other fellow students and other people. What about those who have not been able to pay the ransom? Is this how we are going to live our lives in the country? is this what we are going to continue to do? To look away and support this incompetence we have?

"No! It's not doable. As long as one of us is not safe, all of us are not safe. the saddest thing is that this victim's card is going from place to the other. it's going around and the only god knows on whom it will fall.

"I'll continue to repeat that yesterday's victims were once survivals and today's victims were yesterday's survivals and tomorrow's victims were today's survivals. Let me tell you something, in Nigeria's today, being a victim is no longer a matter of if its a matter of when."

THE BACKGROUND

In June 2018, Unatrac Holding Limited, a company which deals in sales of heavy industrial and farm equipment, was said to have approached the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) over a breach in the email account of its chief financial officer where a fraudulent transfer of funds was done.

The intruder was said to have sent phishing emails containing a web link, purportedly to the login page of the CFO's online email account hosted by Microsoft Office 365.

Believing the link to be genuine, the CFO was said to have imputed his username and password from where the intruder got full access to the account and sent a fraudulent wire transfer request to the company's internal financial team.

Acting under the impression that the email emanated from the CFO, the finance staff processed approximately 15 payments between April 11 to 19, 2018, totalling $11 million.

'INVICTUS OBI MAY GET CLOSE TO 20-YEAR JAIL TERM'

Okeke, who requested to for substitution of legal counsel is now being represented by John O. Iweanoge, II and THE IWEANOGES FIRM. The Iweanoges took over from Rahul Sharma, a US federal public defender.

Based on precedence, Okeke could get between five and twenty years jail term for conspiracy to commit computer and wire fraud.

According to the Legal Information Institute, anyone who "knowingly and with intent to defraud, accesses a protected computer without authorization, or exceeds authorized access, and by means of such conduct furthers the intended fraud and obtains anything of value, unless the object of the fraud and the thing obtained consists only of the use of the computer and the value of such use is not more than $5,000 in any 1-year period".

If the financial value of information taken exceeds $5,000, the convicted shall be subject to a fine or imprisonment for not more than ten years, or both.

As for wire fraud, a person convicted for a single act of wire fraud can result in fines and up to 20 years in prison, according to criminal defence attorneys in the United States.

Persons familiar with wire fraud cases in the US told TheCable that a combination of these sentences could result in a higher jail term for the estranged Nigerian entrepreneur.

Okeke has since faded of social media.

”MFM now produces the largest number of first class graduates every year” – General Overseer Daniel Olukoya

Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:30 AM PDT

Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, says his church now produces the largest number of first class graduates every year in the world.

Olukoya said this on Sunday August 25th when he awarded over 300 first class graduates alongside three NYSC presidential awardees.

"As part of the 70-point agenda for the youths, I made a statement in 2010 that, any member of the MFM that perform excellently well in school would be giving an official car among other cash prizes.

At the inception, 19 students benefited from the initiative while in 2015, it went up to 115 beneficiaries. I couldn't withstand the burden so, I had to call for more sponsors to partner with me due to the rise of the first class graduates who have been so excellence freak in their various disciplines over the years. I am glad to tell you that over 250 students have so far benefited from this initiative since its inception.

Today, the number has drastically increased to over 300 first class graduates across various tertiary institutions in the world. Of all churches I know of, MFM now produces the largest number of first class graduates every year." he said

"I don't have any sugar daddy or anyone I can call or run to if I'm broke, unlike some people. so I don't joke with my brand on social media," she said.

#BBNaija2019: Jackye’s boyfriend, Lami – I personally spent N1.5million on voting & it still didn’t count

Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT

Lami, the boyfriend of ex-Big Brother Naija housemate, Jackye has revealed how he personally spent 1.5million naira on votes for his girl but the 'votes didn't count'.

Sharing vides and receipts of how the money was spent on voting, Lami said that he'll want the organisers to allow his tech firm carry out an audit of Delloite servers and questioned how much money other housemates spend on voting to get their numbers up.

See his full post and videos below:

Even State and National election votes don't count in naija… I personally spent 1.5m in my humble capacity and still na voice mail the money enter but na esha bread for where God dey and besides my girl is worth way more than that. Makes me wonder how much is been sincerely spent in others camp weekly that shoots their % so high then they must have a chairman in their family and if not then how?

Watched big brother so much I barely had time to cater to myself, my business distracted like say na National Assembly election Jackye dey contest for on top 30m wey my girl wanna win, chaii I don suffer.

Anyway na wetin the organizers want and Deloitte like dem go show and it was more like they listen to the noise of Twitter now rather than allowing real votes count cos I got more verifiable receipts of votes and if they would allow my little David tech team to come audit their giant Goliath severs we may be able to pull a super story headline in another big brother social media handler sarcastic manner.

Overall to God be the glory because 60m no fit buy the fame and opportunities she has now and that alone we are grateful for even though it comes along with a lot of hate amidst the great love.
