Everything about Davido’s customised engagement ring for Chioma

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Davido proposed to Chioma on Thursday night, September 12, 2019, but not much is known about the customised ring.

Pulse findings revealed that the customised ring was purchased in a jewelry store, Diamonds by Dorgu, on Hatton Garden, London.

The investigation also revealed that Davido had chosen the ring store because the store deals in bespoke engagement and wedding ring.

It was further revealed that the engagement ring, which has 'Assurance' engraved in it, was designed with the assistance of Chioma and Davido's friends, who had their input into the making of the diamond-encrusted engagement ring.

While the exact cost of the engagement ring was not disclosed, it was gathered that an average diamond ring on a regular store on Hatton Garden is put at over N3.6 million (£8,000).

The uniquely designed engagement ring has diamond stones and style that were specifically done to suit Chioma's dream engagement ring.

The strictly diamond ring store was also responsible for the engagement and wedding rings of BBNaija 2019 Pepper Dem housemate, Mike Olayemi Edwards and his wife, Perri Shakes Drayton.

Unconfirmed sources also told Pulse that Davido's good friend and lawyer, Prince Ajudua also got his wife's engagement and wedding diamond rings from the bespoke store.
Pulse further discovered that the bespoke engagement and wedding ring store is owned by a UK born Nigerian, Timi Dorgu.

Timi Dorgu, the owner of the diamond engagement ring store emerged the winner of the 2014 Black British Business Awards after working at L'oreal in London.

Also lashing out at the patriachal side of the African society, Kamene stated that she wouldn't have gone through all she faced if she was man.

The Kenyan media personality few weeks ago, engaged in a social media showdown with Huddah Monroe who she accused of sleeping with men for money.

Adekunle Gold writes on not getting enough accolades for his work

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Nigerian Singer, Adekunle Gold poured out his frustration in his latest mail to his fan club. The artiste wrote on his struggles as an independent and what he has been going through…

According to him, sometimes he's frustrated when the progression or validation does not match the amount of work he puts in'.

See the full post below ;

It's been like what? 2 months? since my last letter? How are you? Hope you are keeping sane and taking breaks off the crazy timeline?

I was away from home on tour for the longest time in my life on tour. I'm not going to lie to you, this "Africa to the rest of the world" is not a cheap exercise, especially if you are an independent artist. And while there is great reward in coursing uncharted territory for me and watching my music cut through language barriers and put smiles on unfamiliar faces in the world, being up there was hard work.

I toured 4 countries, played large festivals and headlined my own shows, all of which I didn't think was possible just a few years ago. I never went to boarding school but, I now know what homesickness is. It's good to be back home.

While chatting with my best friend yesterday, I had an epiphany I wanted to share with you.

I love this music thing so much.

My team is very tiny and I work really hard I actually have a terrible sleeping habit. I'm always on and I don't know how to take breaks. Because of how much energy I expend, Sometimes, I get frustrated when the progression or validation does not match the amount of work I put in.

This frustration causes me great despair sometimes, but I've been fortunate to be around people who ground and remind me of the love I have for it especially when I get carried away in the business of things.

At the beginning of my conversation yesterday, my biggest fear was failing miserably and that all my work would count for nothing. But I was reminded of these facts; music-making is only one-sided if you are making it for yourself, in this business, you hold a key, the audience is a lock.

It's a game of probabilities where half of our successes are within our control, the rest is up to you. We can only hope that our keys match the locks and the audience likes what you put out while being true to your evolution. We can only hope that our work meets you at a point of your need.

Here's the epiphany…on the days when your keys don't match, you must remember to retain the love and joy of creating and pat yourself on the back for the doors you've already unlocked. On the days new doors open, be thankful that you tried because that was the reward for trying.

As I wind down to bed, you know what my biggest fear is now, leaving this earth, full of creativity and ideas because I was afraid someone wouldn't like it and I ended up not working my gifts. What a shame that would be.

Not sure what you are passionate about Adedayo, my prayer for you this early morning is that the modalities of it don't rob you of the joy of creation. May that joy keeps your fire burning, give you the diligence and the wherewithal to finish what you've started.

I have a little something I'm joyful about.
It's called "AFRO POP".
If you read through this email, then you have a super high chance of getting invited to hear my baby first.

Should You Have Sex With a Friend?

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 07:00 AM PDT

You're playing with fire when you have sex with a friend.

Thats not to say it always ends poorly, but theres a high likelihood that either you or your partner will get burned. There runs the risk of one of you catching feelingsits difficult (or even impossible) to return to a place of friendship when youre in love with a friend who doesnt feel the same way. Maybe things just get awkward after being intimate, no matter how hard you both try to keep it chill. For those and a number of other reasons, having sex with a friend is risky.

Still, sometimes you want to hop into bed naked with your best pal and see what happens. Or perhaps sex wasnt even your intention, but the two of you went out for drinks together, got a little tipsy, and before you knew it, your lips were on theirs . Were only human, after all.

So what should you do if you decide to (or drunkenly) have sex with a friend? We spoke with , a licensed marriage and family therapist, to learn how to mitigate the chance of having a bad outcome after sleeping with a friend.

Be honest with yourself about your intentions and desires.
A lot of times, when we're negotiating the boundaries and expectations of the relationship with ourselves, we wind up subtly manipulating ourselves," Pharaon says. "We tell ourselves we're okay with something when we're not."

This speaks to your motivations for originally wanting to sleep with your friend. Think about it: Odds are you dont want to sleep with all your friends. So why is this friend different? Is it because you may, deep down, want to be more than friends with them, or at least want to give the possibility of a romantic relationship a chance?

If you think you do (or will) want something more, you need to be honest to both yourself and your friend. We play with the possibility that a dynamic can start off as just sex with the hope that it will transition," Pharaon says. "More specifically, we think that once that person spends more time with me, they'll want to be in a relationship."

Don't assume anything about your friend's feelings. Youre misleading both yourself and them, and setting yourself up for a painful rejection if they dont ultimately come around to falling in love with you.

The goal is to be really clear with yourself and with the other. And the hope and expectation is that the other does the same, Pharaon says. Sometimes we can rely on that and other times we can't. That's the risk. Sometimes sex is sex, and sometimes sex has a lot more connected to it and attached to it.

That said, it's reasonable for feelings to shift and be a bit fluid, which leads to what to do next when sleeping with a friend.

Address your feelings when dynamics in the relationship evolve.
If something changes, notice it and name it, Pharaon says. Sure, these conversations are awkward, but youre going to have to gather your courage and communicate honestly. (Hopefully, its easier to have these more vulnerable conversations with your friend, since you already have a solid foundation of mutual trust and respect.)

You don't have to overdo the communication and check in with each other all of the time, but if you're moving into this space, you're going to want to have an open line of communication as well as the courage to name changes if and when they happen so that you're honoring yourself, the other person, and the dynamic, Pharaon says.

Understand your relationship may implode and you may no longer be friends after you have sex.
Is that a risk youre willing to take? Thats why its typically not worth sleeping with them if you think your attraction to them is a passing phase; if you just think your friend is super hot and it would be a ton of fun, maybe its worth reconsidering.

On the other hand, if you find yourself unable to stop thinking about them romantically, and you think theres a possibility that you too could be a in a serious relationship together, then maybe it is worth the risk.

But also, you know the type of person your friend is.
Does your friend sleep with different guys often with seemingly no emotional attachment? Are they friends with previous hookup buddies? Have they had a friends with benefits type deal? How did it end? Use your knowledge of your friend to speculate how they would respond to having sex with you. Sure, you cant always predict how theyre going to feel after sex, but lets say they seldom have sex with guys, and when they do, they fall really hard in love. You, however, are only looking for a casual flingmaybe sex a couple of timesand then you want to return to a place of friendship. You should definitely not sleep with your friend if this is the situation.

So, is it a good idea to have sex with your friend?
Since we dont know your specific friendship dynamic, we cant tell you with certainty, but we can say that if you decide to have sex, be honest to both yourself and your friend about what it is you want. If you're on the same page, go for it. If not, maybe you should hop into bed with someone else.

Sam Smith Publicly Changes Pronouns to They/Them

  • Sam Smith has publicly changed their pronouns to they/them.
  • They explained how much the change means to them on Instagram.
  • Smith announced that they were non-binary and genderqueer earlier this year.

Pop star Sam Smith has just announced that their pronouns are they/them. In an Instagram post posted earlier today, Smith explained how the decision to change their pronouns are the culmination of their path towards self-acceptance.

"Ive decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender Ive decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out," they wrote. "Im so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but Ive been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it!"

Smith also added that while they knew that people would accidentally misgender them, all they ask for that "you please please try."

Smith then went on to tag non-binary and trans activists that have given them "so much clarity and understanding."

The singer-songwriter first announced that they were non-binary and genderqueer in March 2019, during an appearance on Jameela Jamils Instagram series I Weigh. "You are a mixture of all different things, you are your own special creation," Smith said . "Thats how I take it; Im not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. Its all on the spectrum."

Sofia Vergara Just Posted A TBT Bikini Photo

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 06:00 AM PDT

  • Sofia Vergara posted a throwback photo of herself in a bikini to Instagram.
  • Commenters noted that Sofia's body looks just as good now as it did then.
  • Sofia swears by an intense workout regimen to stay fit.

Yesterday, Modern Family's Sofia Vergara posted an epic #TBT photo from Miami Beach sometime in the 1990s, and it goes without saying she looks pretty dang amazing. She also looks...pretty much the same as she does today at age 47.

How does she do it?! Balance, balance, balance.

Sofia's trainer Jennifer Yates told Marie Claire that the actress works out between five and seven days per week when they have a "good shooting schedule," but if that's not possible, she takes breaks.

"It's fine to give yourself a breakyour body comes back stronger," Yates said. "You have to let your body rest, even if you're working out a few days during the week."

In 2017, Sofia told Women's Health that she has a problem with her knee, so she can't do squats, jumps, or running. As a result, she's a big fan of the Megaformer, which she described as "an advanced Pilates machine." Instead of running, the star walks on the treadmill at a 6 to 8 percent incline to build muscle in her butt and legs.

"Twice a week, we'll do butt exercises because that's the area she really loves to focus on," Yates said . "A couple times, we do upper body and abdominals."

Abs don't seem like a priority for Sofia (but she obviously has them.) "Its not about having muscles or cut abs," she told Women's Health . "I dont have abs." (Um, yes, she does.)

In case you missed it, here's a photo of Sofia in a bikini posted on July of this year:

And here's what she looked like in that throwback pic:

For those of us without a Megaformer, it's possible to replicate Sofia's workout at home. "Crunches are great," Yates said. "During red carpet season we do a lot of upper body and absplanks are also great. Even if you have a weighted object; you can hold it in one hand, crunch to one side, and pull back up to hit your oblique muscles."

The star doesn't deprive herself of foods she loves, either. "I train my clients that there should never be guilty with pleasure," Yates said. "If you want that piece of pizza or that cupcake, it's okay. Just make sure you limit yourself to not the entire pizza, or seven cupcakes."

Whatever Sofia is doing, it seems to be working.

Some African superstitions worth believing because they are backed by science

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 05:00 AM PDT

Contrary to popular opinion, superstitions aren't an African thing alone. In Western countries, people fear black cats, the Number 13 and walking under ladders. Ask Europeans why ships, boats and hurricanes are named after women, and you will not get a logical answer. That's because superstitions are almost never backed by logical explanations.

Are African superstitions worth believing because they are interesting?
Believe it or not, Africans perpetuate the most interesting superstitions. Think about it: striking your left foot against a stone means bad luck, going out when you hear the shrill cry of a bush baby could get you killed, looking at the mirror at night could make you see demons, and so on. And when it comes to African myths, most people believe without questioning.

What are the benefits of superstitions?

So why haven't we done away with these beliefs? And do superstitions have any purpose? According to anthropologists, certain African superstitions are actually worth believing. In fact, these beliefs exist because they serve the following purposes:

· They encourage good behavior among members of a society.

· They provide explanations for strange occurrences—a coping mechanism in the midst of disaster.

· Superstitions empower people to try to control their destinies or to predict their futures. For instance, legendary basketball champion, Michael Jordan believed that wearing his college shorts beneath his team jersey would boost his performance.

· Often, superstitions are used to threaten and dupe people, so you must beware of fraudsters.

While some myths are irrational, many others have been proven true by science. In this article, we shall outline the top five African superstitions worth believing.

The most ridiculous African superstitions that are actually true
1) Mirror showing
If you're in touch with your African roots, you probably know you shouldn't show a child a mirror. According to the myth, the child might remember their past lives, or their souls might get trapped. None of these can be explained rationally. Elderly people probably coined these explanations to deter anyone from breaking this tradition.

A closer look might reveal the real reason behind this superstition. If babies (or very young children) form a habit of looking at the mirror, they might break it and harm themselves. Mirror gazing can also inspire pride in one's beauty. It can also inspire body image issues.

Here's a true story: After wearing a Halloween costume, a child looked in the mirror and was alarmed by what he saw. The child screamed and wailed. For days, he was traumatized by his costume and his image.

So perhaps, it us wise to adhere to the tradition of reserving mirrors for grownups only.

2) Sweeping your house at night
Do not sweep your house at night, says the famous superstition, or you'll lose your wealth. In other words, sweeping at night is symbolic of sweeping out your wealth.

This makes sense when you consider that health is wealth. To be healthy, you have to sleep well. You can't sleep well, when you're raking a broom all over the house in the middle of the night. Besides, the sweeping will result in a lot of dust and allergens floating around the house and blocking inhabitants' airways.

According to research, sleep deprivation can cause cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and other metabolic diseases. When people don't get enough sleep, they are likely to spend their hard earned monies and time consulting medical experts.

3) Don't eat vulture meat
Vultures are often regarded as scavengers of death. They are the cleanup birds that feast on the dead and all things filthy. It is for this reason that people all over the world avoid vultures. They do not domesticate vultures and they do not eat them.

In fact, in African traditional religion, vultures are regarded as the harbingers of death. When you see a vulture perching on your roof, you are advised to throw a stone at it. Keep throwing stones until it flies away.

Researchers in UCLAs Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, performed a methodical review that showed that vultures have a more complex digestive gut that allows them to tolerate carrion-based meals. Humans stand the risk of getting food poisoning if they eat or handle vultures.

Avoiding vultures is an African superstition worth believing.

4) Sacred Pythons is one of the African superstitions worth believing
In various African societies, Pythons are either worshipped or revered. In some parts of Nigeria and Kenya, people are forbidden to kill pythons. In Kenya for instance, the people believe that pythons bring rainfall. In parts of Nigeria, pythons are said to protect crops and other forms of livelihood. People who kill pythons in some parts of Nigeria are made to give the reptile an expensive, befitting funeral ceremony.

Science has shown that pythons and other kinds of snakes are effective in reducing the population of rodents and other crop-destroying pests. Pythons play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Killing them is definitely not a good idea.

The solution is to find safe ways to coexist with them. It's actually doable. After all, our ancestors did it for centuries.

5) Don't disclose your pregnancy until after the second trimester
As pregnancy superstitions go, this is the most common one. African women are generally encouraged to be secretive about their pregnancies. According to the myth, the spirits can hear and jinx the pregnancy.

However, there is a scientific explanation to this. Discussing your pregnancy often brings up a lot of unanswerable questions. And everyone knows that uncertainty brings a lot of anxiety and worry. Anxiety is bad for you and your baby. Furthermore, a lot of miscarriages happen in the first trimester, so many women choose to keep things quiet until the danger has passed.

According to one research study, psychological stress in expectant mothers increases the risk of early miscarriage. If you're pregnant, consider adhering to this is one. It's one African superstition worth believing.

Final thoughts on African superstitions worth believing
Superstitions aren't simply a sign of ignorance or a lack of imagination. Sometimes, they are backed by science. So before you shun that African superstitions worth believing, look at it critically. Perhaps, science has proven that it is worth believing.

All you need to know about lupus, the deadly autoimmune disease

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 03:30 AM PDT

Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems, including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

This disease can be severe and potentially life-threatening. It can cause permanent organ damage. However, many people with lupus experience a mild version of it. Currently, there's no known cure for lupus.

Symptoms
Symptoms usually start in early adulthood, anywhere from the teen years into the 30s. People with lupus generally experience flare-ups of symptoms followed by periods of remission. That's why early symptoms are easy to dismiss.

Because early symptoms are similar to those of other conditions, having them doesn't necessarily mean you have lupus. Early symptoms can include:
  1. Fatigue
  2. Fever
  3. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling
  4. Butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose or rashes elsewhere on the body
  5. Skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure (photosensitivity)
  6. Fingers and toes that turn white or blue when exposed to cold or during stressful periods (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  7. Shortness of breath
  8. Chest pain
  9. Dry eyes
  10. Headaches, confusion and memory loss
Causes

Lupus occurs when your immune system attacks healthy tissue in your body (autoimmune disease). It's likely that lupus results from a combination of your genetics and your environment.

It appears that people with an inherited predisposition for lupus may develop the disease when they come into contact with something in the environment that can trigger lupus. The cause of lupus in most cases, however, is unknown.

Some potential triggers include:

Environment: Doctors have identified potential triggers like smoking, stress, and exposure to toxins like silica dust as potential lupus causes.

Genetics: Having a family history of lupus may put a person at slightly higher risk for experiencing the condition.

Hormones: Some studies suggest that abnormal hormone levels, such as increased estrogen levels, could contribute to lupus.

Infections: Doctors are still studying the link between infections like cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr, or hepatitis C and causes of lupus.

Medications: Long-term use of certain medications, such as hydralazine (Apresoline), procainamide (Procanbid), and quinidine, have been linked with causing a form of lupus known as drug-induced lupus erythematosus.

Risk Factors

  • Your sex. Lupus is more common in women.
  • Age. Although lupus affects people of all ages, it's most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45.
  • Race. Lupus is more common in African-Americans, Hispanics and Asian-Americans.
  • Effects on the body

Lupus can affect the following systems:

Kidneys: Inflammation of the kidneys (nephritis) can make it difficult for the body to remove waste products and other toxins effectively. Around 1 in 3 people with lupus will have kidney problems.

Lungs: Some people develop pleuritis, an inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity that causes chest pain, particularly with breathing. Pneumonia may develop.

Central nervous system: Lupus can sometimes affect the brain or central nervous system. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, depression, memory disturbances, vision problems, seizures, stroke, or changes in behavior.

Blood vessels: Vasculitis, or inflammation of the blood vessels, can occur. This can affect circulation.

Blood: Lupus can cause anemia, leukopenia (a decreased number of white blood cells) or thrombocytopenia (a decrease in the number of platelets in the blood, which assist in clotting).

Heart: If inflammation affects the heart, it can result in myocarditis and endocarditis. It can also affect the membrane that surrounds the heart, causing pericarditis. Chest pain or other symptoms may result. Endocarditis can damage the heart valves, causing the valve surface to thicken and develop. This can result in growths that can lead to heart murmurs.

Modern treatments have improved the outlook for people with lupus. However, it remains a variable and unpredictable condition and may even be life-threatening for people whose vital organs are affected.

It's hard to predict exactly how lupus will affect you. Most people with lupus don't have the more serious complications, but your doctor and rheumatology nurse specialist will be on the look-out for these so that early treatment can be given if necessary.

Here’s one part of Nigerian wedding culture that we need to cancel right now

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 03:00 AM PDT

Nigerian weddings are what they are – loud, happy, colourful events that will leave you breathless with fun and good times.

But that's not all there is to our wedding culture. There are parts of it that are not as glamorous, or as laudable as the parts we like to project to the world with our glossy wedding pictures and wedding stories on Instagram and other channels.

And while the heavily-contested bride price culture might readily jump to mind, there are some other [lesser known] pertinent ones that need to be cut off ASAP.

Entitlement to wedding invites

So there's this thing that people do that does not make much sense. They hassle you for not being invited to your wedding. Like, how do you feel that bold or OK to pick a fight with someone for not being invited to their wedding?

It really does not sound nice to bother someone or keep a grudge about not being invited to their wedding, especially if y'all aren't so chummy like that. Fam, I know it may have been imbibed due to how our 'Nigerianness' has permitted silly things like that for so long, but you know better now.

It's time to dead the habit. It's a bad one.

They had list of guests in mind and you did not make it. It's really not a big deal. Move on. There will be many more weddings in the future.

And think of it like this: you were saved the stress and financial burden of buying aso-ebi, dealing with a tailor, spending money on a make up artiste, being out on a Saturday, facing traffic when you could be resting or just about doing anything you feel like doing.

Just let it go. Trust me, you didn't miss something to kill yourself over… or feel salty about.

Adele has filed for divorce from husband, Simon Konecki after seven years of marriage

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 12:30 AM PDT

Adele has filed for divorce from husband, Simon Konecki after seven years of being together.

TMZ reports that Adele filed for divorce on Thursday, September 12, 2019. It also reports that the divorce was bound to happen following their separation earlier in the year.

Adele and Simon's relationship and later marriage have always been kept away from the prying eyes of the public. The couple after their separation earlier in the year, announced that they were "committed to raising their son together lovingly."

The couple started dating back in 2011 even though a lot wasn't known about their relationship. She went on to give birth to their son, Angelo, in 2012. Thereafter, the couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony.

Adele and Simon Konecki join the list of celebrities who have thrown in the towel with their marriages and exclusive relationships. From Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk to The Weeknd and Bella Hadid the list keeps taking no prisoners.
