How to write a professional CV

Posted: 17 Sep 2019 12:30 AM PDT

Writing an interview-landing CV is a hard task for many. How do you write one that stands out from the many CVs human resource managers and recruiters receive when recruiting? An ultimate rule for CV writing is – be different and show your selling-point.

It's worthy to note there's is no one rigA curriculum vitae popularly known as CV is brief synopsis or account of your educational, professional experience, skills and more typically used for job applications.

There are 2 types of CVs – the educational CV and the experience focused type. The former focuses on educational/professional qualification and academic work and is usually for applicants who have no work experience while the latter focuses on professional experience, skills and achievements.

Listing either educational or professional experience is best done by starting with them from most recent to oldest. It's Important to always adapt your CV to a job industry and consistently tweak them for advertised job roles.

The CV Writing Format

 Personal Details
ht format to write a CV. One rule you should note, however, is that your CV should be able to put you in the spotlight for the role you're applying for, this will inform the HR manager or recruiters decision to invite you to an interview.

What is a CV?

This section consists of your name, address, age (not be compulsory), phone number, email. Put these in a strategic location and in legible fonts so that they can be easily seen by the HR manager or recruiter. Ensure the information provided are current.

Pro Tip: Never use an email that is not yours. Avoid stating your state of origin, religion (except if specified in the job advertorial) and unprofessional email addresses. Examples of this would be obiswag10@xyz.com or sexyprincess2015@xyz.com. Keep it professional.

Work Experience

Start with your most recent job role. For each job role, it's important to state your role and achievements. An example would be:

Iceberg Communications Limited 2016 – (Present)

Job Title: Marketing Executive

Iceberg Limited is Nigeria's number one marketplace for electrical home appliances.

Achievement:

  • Individually increased the monthly revenue from N15 million to N25 million in 6 months.
  • Worked with the marketing team to spread our products from Lagos to all the 6 states of the Western Nigeria within a year.
  • Won the 'Salesman of the Year" award consecutively for November and December 2016.

Pro Tip: Always remember to tweak your job experience in line with what you are applying for. It will increase the employer's preference for you.

Education

Always start with the most recent educational qualification. Professional certification that is relevant to the job should also be added to this section.

E.g. University of Port Harcourt – 2013

Qualification: B.A. History and International Relations.

Excellent diplomatic skills and versed in three foreign languages – French, Portuguese and Chinese
Graduated with a first class grade of 4.56 and won the 'Best Graduating Student' award.
Pro Tip: If you have a qualification from a tertiary institution, it's unimportant to include your primary school first leaving certificate unless you're a fresh graduate with no work experience. This section includes professional certifications, affiliations/membership, training and seminars; they can appear as a sub-section under education.

Interests and Abilities

This section should be kept short and simple. Key things to note here are:

Avoid clich̩s such as "creative" "motivated", "team player", "problem solve", "self-starter." Instead, be specific about your hobbies РReplace 'running' with 'I jog about 300 km every weekend'. This shows you are disciplined and committed.

Pro Tip: Add interests that align with the prospective employer's corporate social responsibility.

References

The standard number of referees is three, although some organisations request for two. The lesser the pages of a CV, the greater attention it receives. As an employer, you would not want to be bothered by CVs that look like handouts. A 2-page CV is excellent. Therefore, be direct, clear and convincing.

Pro Tip: "Never use a referee that you're not familiar with and has knowledge of using them as referees," – Prince Ihemegbulam, Jobberman CV Services Analyst pointed out.

Some Tips How to write a good CV

Use active verbs wherever possible. For example, you could include words like 'created', 'analysed' and 'devised' to present yourself as a person who shows initiative.

There should be no spelling or grammar mistakes in your CV. Use a spell checker and enlist a second pair of eyes to check over it.

Avoid using generic phrases such as 'team player', 'hardworking' and 'multitasker'. Instead, provide real-life examples that demonstrate all of these skills.

Take a look at the company's website, local press and the job advert to make sure that your CV is targeted to the role and employer.

Decide whether the chronological, skills-based or academic CV is right for you. For more information, take a look at example CVs.

Don't put the term 'Curriculum Vitae' at the top of your CV.
Provide a professional-sounding email address.

Never lie or exaggerate on your CV or job application. Not only will you demonstrate your dishonesty to a potential employer, but there can be serious consequences too. For example, altering
your degree grade from a 2:2 to a 2:1 is classed as degree fraud and can result in a prison sentence.
If you're posting your CV online don't include your home address, as you could be targeted by fraudsters.

You should always include a cover letter unless the employer states otherwise. It will enable you to personalise your application for the job. You can draw attention to a particular part of your CV, disclose a disability or clarify gaps in your work history. Find out how to write a persuasive cover letter.

A husband who will not put his phone down

Posted: 17 Sep 2019 12:00 AM PDT

First I would like to thank you for the love and happiness you bring to our family. The children and I are very blessed to have you and we know it. So, thank you.

But, remember when our second daughter said her first word? We were in the living room, watching a movie you picked. Only, you weren't watching because your attention was on whatever was making you smile at your phone. That's why when she said "dada", you didn't hear it. This is something you always do, by the way. You insist on a movie, and then you pick up your phone. Two hours later, the movie is over and with it the opportunity to bond as a family.

I get it. Please know I understand that your phone is your networking tool and sometimes it's work. I also know your phone helps you unwind after a particularly long day. I'm also guilty of preferring my Instagram feed to playing peekaboo with our son for the 57th time in a row. I get the distraction it causes. But here's what I don't think you realize: You're missing out. You're missing out on precious family memories of your children that you can never get back.

I hate that we're in church, the sermon is on, and you reach into your pocket for your phone because " a client might send a text." In church? What are you teaching the kids? Parenting is leadership by example, and these ones are only too ready to mirror all the things they see us do.

It was annoying when it was just us two. I found it annoying to constantly have to repeat your name because you didn't hear me the first time. It was embarrassing when we were out with my family and you were the only one sitting on your phone while everyone else was talking.

When it was just the us, I felt like you were only half here with me. I was talking and you were only giving me some of your attention while the rest was catching up on BlackBerry Messenger. In fact, it's hard to remember back when smartphones weren't a thing yet and you used to go hours without a phone in your hand.

Now, we're a family, blessed with beautiful children. These small, seemingly insignificant moments that pass you by as your thumb is scrolling? They are priceless treasures. I don't want you to look back and realize how much you didn't see because you were looking down at your phone

Dear husband, I love you but your addiction to your phone is hurting us. It's affecting our marriage and the relationship we have with our child. Please think about the message you're sending to your daughter and your wife. You may not realize the power you have to make or break us.

Please, I'm begging you, put your phone down sometimes. Be more present with us. Look us in the eyes while your phone is in the next room. I promise you won't regret it.

Chineze Anyaene and Chiome Ude are members of Nollywood film selections ahead of 2020 OScars

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 11:30 PM PDT

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - producers of the Oscar - has reconstituted a 12-man committee of Nollywood stakeholders ahead of the 92nd edition of the award ceremony in 2020.

The newly constituted Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) is headed by pioneer member and Nigerian filmmaker, Chineze Anyaene as Chairman.

Other members of the committee include Mahmood Ali-Balogun, Ngozi Okafor, Charles Novia, Chioma Ude, Abba Makama, Mildred Okwo, CJ Obasi, Bruce Ayonote, DJ Tee, Ramsey Nouah and Shaibu Husseini.

Speaking to Pulse on the re-constituted committee, Anyaene said, "We don't take this for granted. We hope the committee fulfills its original mandate, which is to give a platform to credible Nigerian films to compete at the prestigious Academy Awards annually."

Continuing, the producer of 'Ije: The Journey' said, "We couldn't make any submissions in previous years due to unavailability of qualifying films, but things are looking hopeful... and we are actively working towards having an entry this year."

In 2014, Nigeria joined 82 other countries contesting the 'Foreign Language' diadem, now called 'International Feature Film' category, after approval and subsequent inauguration of the NOSC in February 2014. However, Nollywood could not present any film for the Oscars as the few submissions did not meet basic criteria.

The 'International Feature Film' of the Oscars gives an opportunity to Nigerian filmmakers living in Nigeria and the diaspora for a shot at the foremost creative industry award scheme globally.

The dust it raised will settle."

Sadiq Abdulai Abu – BET Awards organizers disrespected Sarkodie by nominating Falz in same category with him

A Ghanaian awards CEO, Sadiq Abdulai Abu took a swipe at BET organizers over the nomination of Nigerian rapper, Falz in same category with other superstar rappers.

Recall that Falz was on Thursday September 12, unveiled alongside other international artistes as nominees for the 2019 BET Hip-Hop Awards. Falz was nominated in BET's new Best International Flow category alongside Nasty C (South Africa), Sarkodie (Ghana), Tory Lanez (Canada), OG Ghetts (UK) and Little Simz (UK).

However reacting to the nomination list during an interview on Hitz FM, Sadiq said going by the standard Sarkodie has set, he shouldn't be in same category with Falz.

"What's Falz doing in the BET's Best International Flow Category? I think it is disrespectful to Sarkodie for Falz to be in the same category as him, looking at the standard Sarkodie has set.

"Sarkodie is been there, and done that. There is no slowing down. I hope he wins" he said.

Mike Bamiloye – The people you sleep with can give you generational curses

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 04:00 AM PDT

Popular Clergyman, Mike Bamiloye, stated that most people are presently living complex, confused and battered lives because they have had multiple sexual partners. Bamiloye stated this in a post he shared on Instagram today.

According to the clergyman, many men and women have shared in the generational curses and foundational complexities of persons they had sexual agreement with in the past.

Read his post below;

A DANGEROUS MIXING OF THE WATER.
A Lady has taken a part of the life of whoever she sleeps with. Her water is mixed with his water in a Highly Mysterious Invisible Covenant of Union.
She is supposed to give that privilege to a man she would live with all her life. Because her waters must NEVER mix up with any other water again for life.
Similarly, A young man has taken a part of the life of whoever he sleeps with.
PART OF HER DWELLS IN HIM AND PART OF HIM LIVES IN HER. THE INTRA-TRANSITION HAPPENS WHEN THE SEXUAL UNION IS GOING ON….And all the Contractual Agreement is signed within the 5 mins or 10mins of the PLEASURABLE MADNESS.

Now…the most frightening issue is this: Some ladies can not actually pin down the number of men they have shared their lives and body with.
THEY LIVE COMPLEX LIVES. Because, they had slept and shared the lives and bodies with all the accompanying generational and family complexities and curses of the various boys and men.
So also, some young men can not accurately give the number of the ladies they have shared their body and lives with. Some people's destinies have been seriously distorted and badly battered beyond repairs. Stolen virtues. Torn royal apparels on beds of immoral pleasures.
In the Course of Sexual Blood Covenant, many ladies and young men have shared in the generational curses and foundational complexities of persons they had sexual agreement with:
THEY HAVE BECOME ONE WITH AS MANY AS THEY HAVE HAD SEXUAL UNION WITH.
So many are living confused, complex and battered lives that have shattered beyond human repairs".

Mr 2Kay: Gifty Powers said she would give my child to another man after I refused to give her money

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 03:00 AM PDT

Mr 2Kay has alleged that his ex-girlfriend Gifty Powers stays relevant by attacking him following their Instagram exchange days ago in which she backed an Instagram user who said she must have dumped him because he had body odour.

Commenting on the Instagram exchange that made headlines, Mr 2Kay said Gifty Powers has always been the one attacking him even though he's a free-spirited person.

He added that he won't publicly shame the reality show star because she is the mother of his daughter.

"I am a free-spirited person. Have you ever seen me attack her? She's the one always attacking me. I was saying that I know Tacha and she doesn't have body odour. People misinterpreted that to mean I had seen her in the morning before her shower, when she is actually my sister.

When Gifty involved herself, I didn't respond to her. She is the mother of my daughter and I respect my kid, so I won't react. She doesn't understand this and she seizes every opportunity to attack me. She's always using me to stay relevant. Whether I sing or not, I'll still be relevant but who remembers her name when mentioned? Her existence is tied to me" he said.

The singer also told Sunday Scoop that Gifty's bitterness centers on him moving on and refusing to hold on to their relationship.

"Some people get angry about what they can't have. We used to be together and she wanted us to continue but I refused because I didn't want to be with her kind of person anymore. She was already pregnant at the time and had a child for me but I didn't want to continue. I thought we should concentrate on our child but she's angry she can't have me back," he said.

On Gifty denying he is the father of her daughter, Mr 2Kay said;

"I know the kid is mine and even if you ask her (Gifty's) mother, she will say the same thing. When Gifty was pregnant, she denied it. When she had the baby, she denied it also. She'll soon deny her own self. I was making my own contribution to take care of the baby. At the moment, I can't take care of her because of my work schedule and she's just about to turn two. I know my responsibilities as a father and I perform them and the mother has to do her bit as well. Gifty asked for an outrageous sum of money for a kid that hadn't clocked one year and she told my sister that she was going to give my kid to another person. I didn't object but I just said that the kid would look for her real father when she's grown."

Actress Sonia Ogiri Laments as Mercy Johnson’s Fans Attacked Her

Posted: 16 Sep 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Two weeks ago, USA based Nollywood actress, Sonia Ogiri blasted her colleague, Mercy Johnson-Okojie over her hatred attitude towards her years back.

In a lengthy video, Sonia had shared an Instagram titled 'healing process', she recounted her bitter experience with Mercy Johnson.

The post read in part, "Healing process. Hey sis, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, I think it is time to talk about all the pain you inflicted on me all these years in order for my healing process to take place."

However in an interview with Punchng, stated why she called out Mercy on social media.

"I called her out on social media because she would get the message straight. That was my best way to do it. I didn't want to send her a direct message because I believe she will have thousands of messages, just like I have thousands of unread messages. I won't leave my schedule and activities to go looking for someone to settle scores with.

Sometimes, people hurt one but they don't know the magnitude of what they may have done, and one would be dying in silence. As for me, I would rather speak out than die in silence. I don't want to miss heaven because of the things I keep in my heart. My calling her out was justified by my conscience and every other thing," she said.

Asked if Mercy Johnson's fans attacked her over the post, the actress said, "Yes, her fans attacked me on Instagram. When I went through the comments, people supported her and some supported me too. Other people also confirmed the story. She has her fan base and I have mine. If I were in Nigeria till now, I probably would have done lots of movies too.

I chose to put my priorities straight. Now, I can shoot movies with any amount I desire. Nollywood is not running anywhere; I will go back to it. My son's life and future come first and that is the reason I relocated in the first place."

Davido reacted to a fan's outburst in a rather light note and it got fans talking…

The fan responded to Davido's tweet acknowledging Adekunle Gold for helping him by co-writing his next album with him. The fan with the twitter name Kantoma told Davido to write his songs himself instead of seeking for help.

The Blow My Mind crooner gently responded to him by saying that it would be more appropriate if more artists should be like and learn to tell the truth, especially when they have been helped.

To that, another user subtweeted Davido's reply and said he likes the way Davido handled the issue, unlike the way he would have reacted by "raining curses" on him. Davido's replied and said "I am married now" with an laughing emoji.

In related news, as Chioma and Davido, continue to bask in the joy that comes with the proposal and soon-to-come wedding, a Nigerian lady expressed what she thought about some people congratulating the duo via whatsapp.

The Nigerian lady on her twitter page on Thursday, September 12, asked what people sending their best wishes to Davido on their Whatsapp hope to gain.

She said it is totally sense congratulating him if they do not have either his or Chioma's contacts on their phone.
