BBNaija2019: Lipton Ice Tea brought the sunshine to the BBN House on Independence Day

Posted: 06 Oct 2019 12:00 AM PDT

- Mike wins 1m and a trip for 2 to Mauritius courtesy Lipton Ice Tea

It was a LIT independence day celebration for the BBN housemates as they were visited with loads of Sunshine to lighten up the rainy day.

To start off the day, the housemates were tasked to "Find their Sunshine", which was basically to search the entire house for hidden bottles of the new Lipton Ice Tea, which recently launched into the Nigerian market.

The second task was a puzzle where they were meant to put together different pieces of the puzzle to form the Peach and Lemon variants of Lipton Ice Tea. Mike emerged as the winner and jumped in excitement; "Finally I won something". As the winner, He got N1m and a trip for two to Mauritius.

Soon after the second task, the housemates had the next round of Sunshine. Adekunle Gold visited the housemates and brought along their Independence day themed Lipton Ice Tea attires to get them set for the LIT party. The attires were Super LIT, branded in Lipton Ice tea colors.

The party had every attribute of LITness; a live band performed for the housemates, there was lots of food and drink to go round and a cool Owambe twist where they sprayed each other with LIT money. While the party was on, other celebrities such as Sophie Alakija, Jemima Osunde, Efe Irele and Taymesan joined the party.

The housemates definitely chopped beta life as they partied with Adekunle Gold and other celebrities; all thanks to Lipton Ice Tea.

JUST IN: 2023 Presidency Allegedly Divides Osinbajo and Tinubu (Full Story)

Posted: 05 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT

JUST IN
Notwithstanding public appearances and statements to the contrary, political permutations and maneuvering for the 2023 presidential race may have finally come between the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

This became glaring following some developments in the presidency, which appeared to have reduced the influence of the VP within government. About three weeks ago, government agencies under the supervision of Vice President Osinbajo were directed to be seeking their approvals from the President, and same period, the Prof. Doyin Salami-led economic advisory council was set up to replace the Osinbajo-led economic management team. A presidential directive sacking the VP's aides from the villa capped that; they are now to operate from a rented apartment in the Abuja metropolis.

While there have been many political interpretations given to the gathering storm, ranging from alleged complicity in some activities to attempts to shove him aside or whittle down his influence ahead of 2023, Saturday Sun gathered exclusively that the storm the VP is battling against is three-pronged.

Trouble began for the brilliant professor of law when some officials working with him were fingered in the purchase of some houses abroad especially the United States. It was learnt that in all, the VP has about 80 officials as aides. With the exception of a few, most of the aides were being paid salaries by agencies under the supervision of the Vice President's office.

A probe of the development was said to have absolved Osinbajo of any complicity in the activities of some of the indicted aides. This, those opposed to the VP in APC, government and within the opposition ranks twisted against him.

Presidential sources disclosed that this was responsible for the decision to relocate over 70 officials working with the VP from Aso Rock villa to a rented apartment within the capital city as well as the issuance of the directive to seek President Buhari's approval by certain agencies under the direct supervision of the VP.

For Osinbajo and Tinubu, the relationship started going down south when the APC leader and former governor of Lagos state began to get feelers that the number two citizen might equally be nursing the ambition to succeed his boss in 2023. The latter is believed to have nominated the former for his current position in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election. Some persons close to Tinubu were said to have made some snipe remarks about the suspected ambition of the VP to the hearing of security agents in an open discussion at the 11th Bola Tinubu birthday colloquium held March in Abuja, an incident that later became part of a security report on the programme.

It was further gathered that Tinubu has not been too pleased with the VP because he has not been consulting him on a number of issues, while "some of their people in government like the FIRS man have been working more towards the political ambition of the VP than that of Asiwaju." The APC leader was said to have been restrained by friends and aides from releasing a press statement endorsing recent presidential actions viewed as whittling down the VP's influence before jetting out to London over a week ago.

He equally has a Buhari ally and former governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun to contend with. All the major federal political appointments going to Ogun since the inauguration of President Buhari's second term in May had been clinched by persons nominated by Amosun. For instance, Amosun's childhood friend and Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure during his eight-year term as governor of Ogun, Olamilekan Adegbite, was recently appointed the Minister of Mine and Steel Development.

Amosun has also succeeded in pushing his ally, Adeleke Moronfolu Adewolu, to be appointed as the Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Engagement, at the Nigerian Communications Commission. He replaced Sunday Dare, who is now the Minister of Youths and Sports Development. Adewolu had contested but lost the House of Representatives seat in Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency on the platform of APM, a party openly supported by Amosun. In addition, Amosun has been able to push for his former Commissioner for Agric and Urban and Physical Planning, Mrs Ronke Sokefun, to be appointed as the chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Three weeks ago, President Buhari constituted an economic advisory council and named Prof Doyin Salami as chairman. Salami, from Ijebu Ode, Ogun state, is Amosun's close friend. Few days before his appointment, he was in Owo, Ondo state with Amosun for Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's daughter's wedding ceremony.

Meanwhile, a top official in the VP's office, who preferred anonymity, told Saturday Sun " The vice president can't be seen to be a local champion. Yes, his camp produced the governor of Ogun State and you must also remember that Amosun's relationship with the president predates the APC. They were together in ANPP and, since the vice president's camp has produced the governor, it was only fair that Amosun's camp nominate for other appointments. Appointments are at the president's discretion."

Asked why Tinubu is yet to publicly defend Osinbajo, the official replied: "People are free to make extrapolations based on their interests. Besides, some of these issues are better sorted locally. Now, let's remember that whenever (former President Jonathan) Goodluck had any issues with Sambo, did they discuss it publicly? Any issue will still be resolved locally."

Speaking on record however, Senior Technical Assistant on Media to the Vice President, Louis Odion denied some aides were indicted in any probe set up by the presidency. He said: "I think President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo deserve not to be distracted in their efforts to find solutions to our numerous national problems with rumour mongering like this.

"I am glad you said a panel set up absolved the Vice President. I don't know of any secret probe. I only know of a committee of the House of Representatives that looked into the funds spent by NEMA and it came out with a report that the Vice President was above board. You need to understand that Professor Osinbajo is a man of impeccable integrity who is very loyal to his boss and has the fear of God and whose guiding principle in public office is to serve the interest of the greatest number. To answer your question directly, I am not aware of any secret probe of any of his aides or their indictment."

While also responding to the issue of some VP aides being paid salaries by agencies under the office, Odion said "I doubt if such is impossible. You need to understand that it is a single presidency. We all are appointees of President Buhari. Civil servants are under the head of service while the Secretary to the Government of the Federation signs letters of employment for political appointees. It is only after you are engaged that you get deployed in the office, department or agency where your service is needed. Salaries are paid through a unified system. In fact, through reforms introduced by the Buhari administration, tens of thousand of ghost workers have been weeded out of the system. This was achieved through the integrated payroll system."

Reacting to the removal of 70 out of the over 80 aides working with the VP from the Villa, Odion said: "I think President Muhammadu Buhari offered sufficient clarity to this in his October 1 national broadcast. The government thought it necessary to create a new ministry to respond to new realities and dynamics. I think there is a consensus today that the social investment programme, which has been supervised by Vice President Osinbajo in the last three years, has been quite impactful and beneficial to a large segment of our population. "The TraderMoni and MarketMoni initiatives have benefitted more than two million Nigerians. The school feeding programme has touched more than 10 million pupils in public schools across the country.

Also, the conditional cash transfer has offered succour directly to more than 600,000 vulnerable Nigerians.

"These programmes were incubated and nurtured under the Vice President. Until now, these initiatives were more like interventionist. Now, what President Buhari has done is to try and institutionalise them. To this end, a ministry has been created called Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development. So, the implication is that officers or aides as you call them, whose duties or responsibilities pertain to the agencies I earlier mentioned, are to be moved to another location where the ministry is constituted."

Buhari main Man Nasir Danu apprehended at Heathrow Airport with £200,000 in cash and Maltese passport

Posted: 05 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Nasir Danu

A very close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari, Nasir Danu said to be the go-between who hooks up contractors with first lady Aisha Buhari has been arrested at Heathrow Airport in the UK with a fake Maltese passport and more than £200,000 in cash, Pointblanknews.com has reported.

According to a source who works at the Heathrow airport and who would not like his name mentioned, Danu had arrived the busy UK airport and queued up on the line with passengers holding EU passports.

Once he was called by the immigration personnel and his passport ran on the scanning machine, the passport could not be scanned as the security features on the passport returned invalid.

"The genuine document has been unlawfully altered in some ways. They substituted some pages, substituted a photograph and altered the personal details, replacing them with Danu," the source told Pointblanknews.com.

According to the source, Danu was immediately pulled over in a room at the airport while his carry-on bag was searched and a cash amount of over £200,000.00 found inside his bag.

Upon cross-examination, according to the source, Danu told investigators that he paid $30,000.00 to an agent who helped him procure the Malta International Passport.

He also told investigators that he was carrying the cash to deliver to someone in UK. Pointblanknews.com could not get the name of the intended recipient of the huge cash calculated to worth over N90million at the current exchange rate.

It is not immediately known if the huge cash was meant for the first lady, Aisha Buhari, who has been in London for almost three months now.

Danu also enjoys close ties with the First Lady, Aisha Buhari. He is the link man between the President's wife and many oil contractors who seek favor from the first lady.

Danu donated the N56 million Power-bike Yusuf Buhari, son of Nigeria's President, had an accident with. He has been awarded billions in contracts from Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, the NNPC and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMAS, through shady deals.

Pointblanknews.com could not figure out why Danu preferred using a Malta international passport as against his Nigerian passport. He, however, told investigators at the airport that he was coming from Nigeria aboard a British Airways flight from Abuja.

He was deported back, cash seized and allegedly banned from entering the United Kingdom.

The tiny nation of Malta recently came under fire when it announced plans to allow wealthy foreigners to obtain a passport for a 650,000 euro investment with no residency requirement, which would have made it the cheapest European Union (EU) nation in which to purchase citizenship, according to a report by the BBC.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat estimated about 45 people would apply in the first year, resulting in 30m euros (£24m; $41m) in revenues.

After pressure from EU officials, officials changed the rule to require potential passport holders to reside in Malta for a year and raised the investment to 1.15m euros.

By taking up Malta citizenship either by naturalization or through investment, you get the freedom of travel to 182 countries, so no more visa hassles.

Meanwhile, Danu's Casiva Limited was recently awarded the 2019/2020 contracts for the exchange of crude oil for imported petroleum products by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

Danu, was the Director of Logistics for the Buhari Campaign Organisation.

He is also the Chairman of HLSI Systems & Technology LTD, Nigeria, an alleged Israeli company, HLSI Security Systems and Technologies Limited that got a contract for the sum of $195million (N70billion) for the rental of security boats known as Fast Security Intervention Vessel, FSIV.

Headies Nominations: This is why Naira Marley didn't get any nods

Posted: 05 Oct 2019 07:00 AM PDT

October 1, 2019 was meant to be Independence day. But asides Burna Boy's video for 'Another Story,' there was nothing worth celebrating. Thankfully, the day ended with a spice.

Social media is awash with questions on why Naira Marley didn't get a nod.

The organizers of Nigeria's premier music awards, The Headies announced nominations for its 13th edition. It is tagged, 'The Power of A Dream.'

23 categories were announced and they are; Best Recording of the Year; Best Pop Single; Producer of The Year; Best Rap Album; Best R&B/ Pop Album; Best Collabo; Best Rap Single; Best Vocal Performance (Male); Best Vocal Performance (Female); Next Rated; Hip Hop World Revelation; and Lyricist on The Roll.

Others are the Best Street-Hop Artiste; Album of The Year; Artiste of The Year; Song of The Year; African Artiste Recognition; Headies' Viewer's Choice; Industry Brand Supporter; Best Performer; Songwriter of The Year; Rookie of The Year; Special Recognition; Hall of Fame.

Burna Boy leads nominees with nine nods, followed by Teni with six. But no sooner had the nominations became meal for social media than the criticism rolled in. While most of the criticism came from illogical standpoints of people driven by buccaneering cases of laughable sentiment, one of those illogical arguments requires an explanation.

Naira Marley, Marlians and Headies snub
In an earlier article, Pulse wrote that, "The biggest snub is Nigeria's hottest artist, Naira Marley. Not only did he have 'Issa Goal,' Nigeria's anthem for the 2018 World Cup, it also featured Olamide and Lil Kesh. As if that was not enough, his arrest and subsequent arraignment on fraud-related charges shot him into a limelight like never before.

"Since then he has produced three hit singles back-to-back in 'Opotoyi,' 'Soapy' and 'Puta.' He has also given Young John 'Mafo' which looks set to be another hit. Before then, he had 'Japa,' 'Illuminati,' and 'Am I Yahoo Boy?'"

As Naira Marley has soared in status, his fan base has grown. The bulk of his fan base are young millennials and Generation Zers in the Nigerian mainstream who can relate to his avant-garde lifestyle choices.

Asides his lifestyle, he's the young man whom people was wrongly feel got scapegoated by members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He's also the father of four who 'survived' fraud charges and now walks free on the streets of Lagos, crafting hits and cashing out from shows. While certain people don't necessarily feel Naira Marley got scapegoated by the EFCC, they hate what the EFCC represents to Nigerian youth - a consistent reminder of abuse of power/office.

To people who cannot relate to his lifestyle, they rightly love his music. Naira Marley initially got criticized for his lyrical content and vulgarity, but the appeal of his Rexxie-produced sounds have proven far too powerful to simply ignore.

The final demography of Naira Marley's fan base are his UK brethren who don't even care about his reputation. They have loved him from day one and they still ride for him. These UK brethren as well as Naira's notoriety have also swayed other members of the Nigerian disapora to take interest.

Thus, the 'Marlians' emerged. They are loyal, well-represented and sometimes, aggressive both online and offline.

A few weeks ago, Naira Marley started trending after he teased his latest single, 'Pxta.' His fans drove conversations that he was Nigeria's artist of the year. They had a case, but it was never going to be that easy.

Thus when the Headies 2019 nominations dropped and Naira Marley was snubbed, the problems started on social media. At this point, chances are the 'Marlians' will call for a coalition and 'protest' their king's snub.

Does Naira Marley deserve a nomination?

Ordinarily, it's a huge omission. By a little gap, Naira Marley has been Nigeria's hottest artist of 2019. Five hits back-to-back is not something to gloss over. In 2018, he also had 'Issa Goal' and 'Japa.' However, the 'Marlians' should calm down. Naira was never going to get nominations.

Sadly, they were both ignorant and delusional. Even worse, they either thought too much of their king or thought too little of his reputation and antics.

Most awards shows don't associate with people as controversial as Naira Marley. Even worse, he has a pending charge on fraud-related issues. If that is not enough, the content of his songs are just not nomination-worthy.

As noted earlier, "Even if The Headies wanted to nominate him, they have sponsors and a brand. Naira Marley is not what you want your brand to be associated with right now." These are facts.

The entire purpose of having a company is brand representation. No brand wants to be associated with fraud, misogyny and excessively sexualized content that sometimes gets derogatory.

Why do brands avoid this drama?
Controversies are polarizing. While some people will support the 'culprits' or perpetrators like Naira Marley, a lot of people will be against them. No brand wants to lose its customers and sponsors on the account of one person - in this case, artist.

All you have to do is ask Gillette. After its 'anti-toxic masculinity' ad a few months ago, it continues to lose male customers so much that it had to do another ad that glorifies masculinity.

Your brand matters.

EP Review: 'Wakanda Jollof' by Ola Kira

Posted: 05 Oct 2019 06:30 AM PDT

On July 12, 2019, Nigerian singer, Olakira released his 7-track EP, 'Wakanda Jollof.'

Here is a review of the EP;

Ma Cherie Coco

A 'wash' dancehall song with good strings that idolizes an unnamed woman. Its lyrics aren't really progressive or traceable, but it's overall gist is noted - the woman is good and the artist likes her.

Summer Time
Imagine being in sunny Havana, Cuba on a Thursday afternoon in July. Imagine seeing a carnival coming through, led by beautiful scantily clad, bedazzled women with giant figures on their heads as they dance. This is the kind of sound they will be rumbling and swaying to – maybe not its lyrical content though.

The beat is tempting, but Olakira's cadences and flows – though commendable – don't match the beat.

Till Dawn
Again, the beat is good. A percussion straight from al-kayida/pon pon movement of 2015. Lyrically, it's not entirely about love, it's mostly about 'showing a woman out' with the goodies of life.

Aya Mi (My Love)
This time, it's vibe music that sounds like Del B. Lyrically, this is 'wash' music for all intent and purposes and Olakira appraises the love of his life. In a way, he sings like a man in love and in severe need of reassurance from his love interest.

Money Groove
For the first time on this EP, Olakira desists from the 'wash' music and overt fixation on love theme. It's a welcome diversity that seems like the single on Wakanda Jollof. Not only is the beat good, for the first time since this EP started, Olakira finds a balance between a great beat, great cadence and impeccable flows.

Oh, this hook is really good. It's so good. Best song on this EP so far.

Wakanda Jollof
Like clockwork, we're back to the 'wash' brand of music. This is a blend of hi-life and vibe. How he tried to work 'Wakanda Jollof' also seems forced or an afterthought. "Give me your love, wakanda jollof o…" seems fundamentally disjointed.

But again, the beat is good.

Flirty Signal (Refix)
The final song on Wakanda Jollof is the second best song on the EP. Again, it's about love, but from a different perspective. Instead of the perspective of a man in love that Olakira has treated us to since this EP started, this is exciting. It's about his admiration for a girl he hopes would 'strategically position' herself so that he can pounce and make a move.

He killed it.

Verdict
Commercial music is not about lyrics, but the standards are changing. Even Wizkid is feeling the heat. Even though Olakira has more linear storytelling than most afro-pop acts, he got beset by slightly too generic topics and repetition. He focuses excessively on love and 'wash.'

That said, the production throughout Wakanda Jollof is excellent. Its two best songs are 'Money Groove' and 'Flirty Signal (Refix).' 'Money Groove' is a particularly beautiful track. Another commendable detail on Wakanda Jollof is its track listing which aids segues and transitions.

Why Wakanda Jollof?
This is not clear. Olakira should have found a different title for this EP. Not that it matters, but conformity of everything in a project helps the audience.

This EP is by no means excellent, but Olakira's talent is apparent. He needs to keep recording as he's not there yet.

R.Kelly's application for bail has been denied as his trail date has been set for May, 2020

Posted: 05 Oct 2019 05:30 AM PDT

R.Kelly woes appear to be compounding as he has yet again been denied bail.

According to PageSix, R.Kelly had asked to be freed while awaiting trial. His lawyers argued that he doesn't have any money to flee even if he wanted to.

However, a Brooklyn federal Judge Ann Donnelly denied that request on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. According to her, Kelly is accused of committing crimes involving "very young girls," his finances are "murky, to say the least" and the proposed home detention "certainly would do nothing to deter him" from intimidating witnesses.

Even though R.Kelly wasn't in court for the sitting, his lawyers were unable to convince the Judge to grant him bail. A new date, May 18, 2020, has been set for trial and the judge said the proceeding is expected to last about three weeks.

Back in August 2019, R.Kelly was denied bail by a Brooklyn magistrate after fresh charges were levelled against him.

R. Kelly refused bail in Brooklyn sex abuse case

R. Kelly pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn federal court on Friday, August 2, 2019, to charges of racketeering and transporting women and girls for sex and was held without bail.
