ISWAP: 'Don't let terrorists divide us', Buhari pleads to Nigerians
President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed great shock and saddened by the death of innocent hostages in the hands ISWAP.

The President has appealed to Nigerians not to let the handiwork of these terrorists divide the country along religious lines, after a report of the execution of some Nigerian Christians and Muslims by the terrorist group; Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

He made the call in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Friday.

Buhari, who was reacting to the reported execution of some innocent citizens, said: "I am profoundly saddened and shocked by the death of innocent hostages in the hands of remorseless, godless, callous gangs of mass murderers that have given Islam a bad name through their atrocities.

"We should, under no circumstance, let the terrorists divide us by turning Christians against Muslims because these barbaric killers don't represent Islam and millions of other law-abiding Muslims around the world.

"As a President, the collective security of all Nigerians is my major preoccupation and the death of an innocent Christian or Muslim distresses me.''

The President said the terrorists had no clearly defined agenda except the pursuit of evil through indiscriminate murder of innocent people, contrary to the teachings of Islam, which prohibits massacre.

According to him, no true Muslim will be shouting 'Allahu Akbar' while killing innocent people, an evil frequently condemned by the Holy Qur'an.

"These agents of darkness are enemies of our common humanity and they don't spare any victim, whether they are Muslims or Christians, and therefore, we shouldn't let them divide us and turn us against one another.

"The goal of these psychopaths is to cause confusion and spread distrust between Muslims and Christians, despite the fact that they aren't representing the interest of Muslims or Islam.

"While I condemn this evil, I wish to reassure Nigerians that this administration will not lower its guards in the war against terrorism, and we will continue to intensify our efforts towards strengthening international cooperation and collaboration to break the backbone of these evil doers,'' the president stressed.

Buhari called on all Nigerians to be united against terrorists and avoid unhelpful conspiracy theories that serve the interest of Boko Haram terrorists and ISWAP. NAN

$30bn loan: Money necessary for development - Sen. Adeola
Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan Yayi - Twitter

Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, on Thursday said the plan by the Federal Government to borrow about 30 billion US Dollars was imperative in order to catalyse development.

The Senator made the statement in Lagos while speaking with newsmen at the End-of the-Year-Party he organised for residents of his Lagos West Senatorial constituency, News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Adeola said issues raised in some quarters about the loan were not necessary, as the facility was needed to develop the economy.

He said that the loan was necessary to fund many ambitious on-going projects across the country, which would impact greatly on the economy and lives of Nigerians when completed.

"'The 30 billion dollar loan the Federal Government is sourcing for is not one of those frivolous loans; this is a loan that is tied to projects.

"This loan is needed to fund landmark and ambitious projects such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the East West Road, the Second Niger Bridge, among others.

"We need a large chunk of money to get all these projects completed. So, it is only if government access this loan that we can give all these great projects the right direction.

"Again, the government needs this loan to execute those projects that would impact and transform the economy and put the country on the path of progress. So, the loan is necessary," he said.

The senator said the country was faced with serious infrastructural deficit that would be substantially reduced with government accessing the loan.

He said the 9th National Assembly was working in tandem with the executive to deliver on all on-going projects across the country .

Adeola said the country's economy was on the course of progress and it would even get better with the policies of the executive and the interventions of the National Assembly.

He said the return of the budget cycle to January to December would significantly promote the development of the country.

"The economy is moving in the right direction; the economy is blossoming.

"We in the ninth assembly just succeeded in returning the budget cycle to January to December, and with this, we have ensured all that needs to be done in a calendar year can be achieved.

"There is no more haphazard budget implementation; we now have a full year budget implementation which runs from January to December," he said.

He said the National Assembly had amended the Public Procurement Act to increase the mobilisation for contracts from 15 per cent to 30 per cent.

Adeola explained that the aim of the amendment was to ensure that contractors were well mobilised to address the problem of abandoned projects .

The Senator said that the Finance Bill, recently passed into law, was to address all the issues with taxation with a view to promoting development.

He said the Senate Committee, headed by him, would continue to discharge its duties in line with the progress of the country.

Adeola said the belief in some quarters that the 9th National Assembly was a rubber stamp to the executive was unfair.

He said the legislature would always act independently of the executive.

Adeola said that the legislature was collaborating with the executive for progress and it should not be misnterpreted that the National Assembly was a rubber stamp.
