Chief  Emeka Ihedioha, Governor of Imo State - This Day

The Governor of Imo State, Chief  Emeka Ihedioha on Monday renamed Jacob Zuma Road in Owerri after First Republic parliamentarian and minister, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi.

In a statement issued by Mr Chibuike Onyeukwu, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, in Owerri, stated that Ihedioha announced the re-naming at an occasion to mark Amaechi's 90th birthday in Owerri.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the naming of the dual carriage way after the former South African president by former Gov. Rochas Okorocha attracted public opprobrium against the administration.

In a speech, Ihedioha described Amaechi as an icon, whose contributions to nation building should not be ignored.

"Dr Amaechi is an icon, one of the founding fathers of the nation, whose contributions to nationhood should not be overlooked.

"Amaechi remains an inspiration, who stood and defended those principles that remain valuable to nation building," the statement further read.

Amaechi, a native of Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra, was a member of the House of Representatives in 1959.

The nonagenarian was later appointed the Minister of Aviation and Transport in 1962.

According to the statement, former President Olusegun Obasanjo was stated to have prayed God to grant the Imo governor the strength to live up to the expectations of the people of Imo.

Obasanjo was quoted to have said that with Ihedioha's wealth of experience as a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, he was well equipped to govern the state successfully.

"I believe that God, who made you governor of Imo this time, will give you the knowledge to do what needs to be done for Imo to make it one of the leading states in the country.

"While congratulating you on your electoral victory, I pray the Almighty God to enable you to govern well.

"Having eminently served as Deputy Speaker, you are eminently qualified to make Imo State one of the best states.

"You have to bring to bear your wealth of knowledge and extensive contact to the service of Imo and South-East," the statement added.

The statement also quoted the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr John Nwodo, to have said that Ihedioha portended "hope and a new beginning for the Igbo nation" with his quality leadership.

"We have a governor who is humble, experienced and not afraid to appoint people with more academic accomplishments than him or those who have more exposure in governance than him," it quoted Nwodo to have also said. NAN

Falana urges Malami to apologise to Sowore, Dasuki
Falana urges Malami to apologise to Sowore, Dasuki - PM News Nigeria

Minister of Justice Mr Abubakar Malami had earlier said Sowore and Dasuki were released out of compassion.

Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has asked the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, to apologise to Omoyele Sowore and Sambo Dasuki.

The Human rights lawyer, said this while responding to Malami's claim that he ordered the release of Sowore and Dasuki on compassionate ground.

Malami had said that the detainees were released not because of international pressure but out of compassion and respect for the rule of law.

The Minister said, "The only reasons for the release of Omoyele Sowore and Sambo Dasuki revolved around our commitment to the rule of law, obedience to court orders and compassionate grounds."

Release of Dasuki, Sowore excites lawyers - PM News

Falana, however, in a letter addressed to Malami, said the attorney-general should have apologised to Sowore and Dasuki rather than making such a claim.

He said, "It is trite law that once a trial court has granted bail to any person standing trial for any offence whatsoever and the bail conditions have been met the detaining authority shall release the person from custody without any further ado.

"In other words, the refusal to release a defendant who has been admitted to bail by a trial judge is tantamount to contempt of court. Hence, before Sowore's release we had filed Forms 48 and 49 for the committal of the Director-General of the State Security Service to prison for contempt of court."

"The government is not permitted to refuse to comply with the order of bail under the pretext of defending the security of the nation."

"Even under the defunct military dictatorship, detaining authorities were not authorized to incarcerate any person for "security reasons" in defiance of court orders.

"With respect, the federal government has itself to blame for the needless controversy that has trailed the release of the duo. But having belatedly deemed it fit to review your position and advise the federal government in line with the tenets of the rule of law you ought to have apologised to both Sowore and Dasuki.

"That is what is expected of you in accordance with section 32 (6) of the 1999 Constitution. It is not an occasion for grandstanding or arrogant display of power."

For the family of a final year student of Lagos State University (LASU), Favour Daley-Oladele, what they feared most after about two weeks of the pensive search for their daughter turned out to be a nightmare that would sear their memories for a very long time. They mystery of their daughter's disappearance ended after police detectives arrested a 42-year-old self-acclaimed pastor, Segun Phillip and 23-year-old Adeeko Owolabi, for allegedly killing Favour Daley-Oladele, for ritual. The deceased had reportedly left home to an unknown destination on December 8, but when there was no sign of her return or whereabouts, her parents reported at Mowe police station, Ogun State, that their daughter was missing.

Owolabi, allegedly, lured Favour to a white garment church in Ikoyi – Ile, Osun State, where he brutally murdered the girl while she was asleep by using pestle to crush her head and thereafter, her organs were harvested for 'get-rich-quick' money-making concoction.Owolabi and Favour until her betrayal and gruesome killing were lovers and she was said to be looking forward to seeing the two of them becoming husband and wife in future, but unknown to her, Owolabi harboured a different and sinister agenda.

The Ogun State police command on Sunday said it had arrested Philip, alongside Owolabi, over the killing of Daley-Oladele. Owolabi, after his arrest, narrated how he used his girlfriend to prepare ritual meal for himself and his own mother who he claimed had been broke. Owolabi, who was arrested by men of the state police command at Ikoyi-Ile area of Osun State, confessed to having connived with Philip to kill his girlfriend for ritual.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abeokuta. Oyeyemi explained that the two suspects were arrested by the police attached to Mowe Division at Ikoyi-Ile in Osun State. The statement reads in part: "The deceased was reported to have left home to an unknown destination since December 8, and has not been seen since then; hence, she was reported missing by her parents at Mowe Police Station. Upon the report, the DPO Mowe Division, SP Marvis Jayeola, detailed his crack detectives to unravel the mystery behind the sudden disappearance of the woman.

"The detectives went into full-scale technical and forensic investigation of the case and their efforts paid off when the movement of the deceased was traced to a white garment church in far away Ikoyi-Ile in Osun State, being pastored by one Segun Philip."On getting to the church, the self-acclaimed pastor was promptly arrested, but he was quick to inform the detectives that the girl was brought to him by her boyfriend, Adeeko Owolabi, who was still within the vicinity of the church. The said boyfriend was traced and apprehended immediately."

The PPRO added that during the interrogation, Owolabi claimed he lured his girlfriend from Lagos to Osun. Owolabi also confessed that while he used pestle to smash his girlfriend's head during her sleep, his pastor cut off her neck.He further revealed that the pastor cut open his girlfriend's chest, removed her heart and used it to prepare concoction for him and his mother. He said the financial situation of his family led him to go to the pastor who asked him to bring a human being for ritual.

"On interrogation, Adeeko Owolabi confessed to the police that the deceased was his girlfriend and that he had lured her to Ikoyi-Ile where he had perfected plans with the so-called pastor Segun Philip to use her for money ritual."When asked what pushed him to such devilish act, Owolabi explained that he decided to go into money ritual because things were not going well with his parents financially, especially his mother who used to be the family breadwinner. And when he sought assistance from the pastor, he was asked to bring a human being for that purpose and the available person at that time was his girlfriend," Oyeyemi said.

The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the State criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation."The CP, who described the gruesome murder of the deceased as 'superlative degree of wickedness,' vowed to ensure that all the suspects face the full wrath of the law."

Meanwhile, the management of the Lagos State University, Ojo, has called for caution from its students following the alleged murder of Daley-Oladele. It also urged them to remain calm to allow the law enforcement agents conclude their investigation into the matter.

The university's spokesman, Mr. Ademola Adekoya, said on Sunday that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, made the appeal.Adekoya said Fagbohun, on behalf of the university's management, assured the university community that the institution would continue to monitor the case and ensure that justice is done.
