The Ondo State Police Command's spokesman, SP Femi Joseph, who disclosed this on Sunday,  that investigation was in top gear to arrest the perpetrators, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN further reports that members of the royal family from Odigbo Local Government Area, who were abducted on Dec. 21 on the Owo-Oba-Akungba Akoko Road, were released after six days in captivity.

The abductors had earlier demanded N100 million ransom which was later reduced to N60 million.

The PPRO, who said that the police had worked vigorously for the victims to be released, said that he was not aware of any ransom placed on the royal family by their abductors.

Joseph also warned kidnappers and other criminals not to take the state as a safe haven, saying ''the police are battle ready to foil their plans, arrest and ensure they face the wrath of the law."

"It is not out of place to give kudos to the police because we have been working tirelessly for their release since their abduction.

"We are not aware of any ransom placed on the family but I can assure you that investigation is ongoing to arrest the perpetrators of the heinous crime for them to face the wrath of the law," he said.

The Government of Oyo State says it will prosecute 25 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Dr Akin Fagbemi, made this known in a statement issued by the Information and Culture Ministry.

Fagbemi said that the arrest of the suspects was in tandem with the mandate of OYRTMA to curb avoidable road crashes caused by drunk drivers.

The Chairman, also stated that five articulated vehicles and three cars were impounded on Friday between 8pm and 11pm.

He said that the drivers of the impounded vehicles were either caught drinking alcohol while driving or drunk while driving on Ring-Road, Iwo-Road, Moniya and Ogbomoso axis of the state.

Fagbemi added that the arrest was made possible with the aid of the organisation's modern stop and test alcohol detection device provided by the state government.

He said: " Let it be known that for several months, we have carried out an extensive campaign against drunk-driving in the state in both virtual, social, print and non-print media channels before the beginning of the ember months and this festive period.

"We have warned all drivers within the state, no matter how highly placed, to shun the lethal temptation of consuming alcohol and driving."

He said anyone found guilty would be disciplined according to the dictates of the state's enabling laws and traffic rules.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the state had lately announced its resolve to conduct alcohol breath test on any driver that violated traffic regulations in its bid to curb carnage on the roads.

No fewer than 1,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other political parties have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Wakama ward of Nasarawa State.

The defectors included former elected councillors as well as PDP ward chairmen and secretaries, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Mr Mohammed Aya, the APC treasurer in the State, while receiving the defectors at a formal ceremony on Sunday at Wakama, said the party was encouraged with their decision to join the ruling party.

The treasurer who represented Mr Philip Shakwo, the APC State Chairman, assured the decampees that they have equal rights and privileges like the old members.

He therefore assured that the government would site projects that would impact on the lives of the people of the community to justify the action of the defectors.

Similarly, Mr Silas Agara, the immediate past deputy governor of the state, said that now that the people of the community decided to join the party in government, more development would come to the area.

Silas noted that it is only the government that is capable of bringing development hence the need for them to join the government if they are in politics for development.

Also speaking on behalf of the defectors, Mr Bala John, said they have decided to join the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, due to the developmental stride of the party at both state and national levels.

Bala expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for constructing road in the community.

"Wakama community is the only community in the state that the federal government is currently constructing over 6kms of road.

He therefore pledged their unalloyed support to the APC government at all levels and appealed to them to site more development projects in the area.

The occasion was attended by members of the State House of Assembly, Chairmen of local government councils and other stakeholders. NAN

Listeriosis; What is this disease and how can we protect ourselves from it?
A microscopic image of listeriosis

Listeriosis is a series of diseases caused by the bacteria L. monocytogenes and after an outbreak in South Africa, WHO puts other African countries on alert.

The other African countries listed as being at risk are Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

What is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a series of diseases caused by the bacteria L. monocytogenes, outbreaks of which occur in all countries. There are two main types of listeriosis: a non-invasive form and an invasive form.

Noninvasive listeriosis (febrile listerial gastroenteritis) is a mild form of the disease affecting mainly otherwise healthy people. Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, headache and myalgia (muscle pain). The incubation period is short (a few days). Outbreaks of this disease have generally involved the ingestion of foods containing high doses of L. monocytogenes.

Invasive listeriosis is a more severe form of the disease and affects certain high risk groups of the population. These include pregnant women, patients undergoing treatment for cancer, AIDS and organ transplants, elderly people and infants. This form of disease is characterized by severe symptoms and a high mortality rate (20%–30%). The symptoms include fever, myalgia (muscle pain), septicemia, meningitis. The incubation period is usually one to two weeks but can vary between a few days and up to 90 days.

The initial diagnosis of listeriosis is made based on clinical symptoms and detection of the bacteria in a smear from blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), meconium of newborns (or the fetus in abortion cases), as well as from faeces, vomitus, foods or animal feed. Various detection methods, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are available for diagnosis of listeriosis in humans. During pregnancy, blood and placenta cultures are the most reliable ways to discover if symptoms are due to listeriosis.

Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely to contract listeriosis than other healthy adults. It can result in miscarriage or stillbirth. Newborn may also have low birth weight, septicaemia and meningitis. People with HIV/AIDS are at least 300 times more likely to get ill than those with a normally functioning immune system.

Due to the long incubation period, it is challenging to identify the food which was the actual source of the infection.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. But infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.

How is listeriosis diagnosed?

Listeriosis is diagnosed based on a medical history and physical exam. Your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms, foods you have recently eaten, and your work and home environments. A blood test or spinal fluid test may be done to confirm the diagnosis.

How is it treated?

An otherwise healthy person who is not pregnant typically does not need treatment. Symptoms will usually go away within a few weeks.

If you are pregnant and get listeriosis, antibiotics can often prevent infection of the foetus or newborn. Babies who have listeriosis receive the same antibiotics as adults, although a combination of antibiotics is often used until your doctor is certain the cause is listeriosis.
How can you prevent listeriosis?

You can prevent listeriosis by practicing safe food handling (adapted from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
