United States: We are deeply concerned of Sowore’s Rearrest.

Posted: 08 Dec 2019 05:15 PM PST

US Depatment of State

The Government of the United States of America, has said it is deeply concerned that the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who is also the convener of #RevolutionNow, has been rearrested by the Department of State Services,(DSS).

The US State Department, in a tweet; said respect for rule of law, judicial independence, political and media freedom, and due process were key tenets of democracy.

"We are deeply concerned that #Sowore has been re-detained in #Nigeria, shortly after a court ordered he be released on bail. Respect for rule of law, judicial independence, political and media freedom, and due process are key tenets of #democracy," the tweet read.

DSS operatives had stormed an Abuja court to arrest Sowore on Friday. The pandemonium caused by the presence of the operatives in the courtroom disrupted proceedings of an unrelated case forcing the judge to adjourn abruptly. The operatives later picked up Sowore outside the courtroom, This Day reports.

However, the DSS has denied that any of its personnel was involved in the pandemonium in the courtroom during an attempt to arrest Sowore that was caught on camera.

The State Department tweet is coming on the heels of reactions by two US Senators on Saturday condemning the rearrest of Sowore after he had been released on bail by the court.

US Senator Bob Mendez had at a press conference warned of consequences for US-Nigeria relations, while his colleague, Senator Cory Booker, condemned the act as "appalling".

Nigerian legend Fela Kuti, honoured by Anthony Joshua as he enters boxing ring in Saudi Arabia

Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:44 PM PST

Anthony Joshua and Late Fela Kuti

Anthony Joshua regained his boxing world titles on Saturday night by beating Andy Ruiz Jr in Riyadh. He is, once again, the heavyweight champion of the world.

And before the 30-year-old clinched the title he won the hearts of fans, particularly those in Nigeria, by choosing to walk into the ring to a song by Fela Kuti.

The boxer strutted up toward the fight accompanied by the distinctive beat of Kuti's tune Water No Get Enemy – a classy choice.

Joshua's mother Yeta is Nigerian, while his father is of both Nigerian and Irish ancestry. Earlier this year, the boxer told Pulse FM that he is "massively into Nigerian culture".

Considering Kuti's unmatched status as a musical legend in Nigeria, it's safe to say Joshua would have listened to plenty of the musician in his family home: "Growing up in my househould was like Nigeria when you come home, it's the culture and food. My parents, lived there and grew up there, so they know the culture."

The 1975 track Water No Get Enemy is sung in a mixture of Yoruba and pidgin English. After a hypnotic instrumental start, Kuti sings about water's metaphorical and actual power and importance. It refers to how water is so essential to people's lives that no one can take issue with it: it's a more subtly philosophical song than many of his direct rally cries, but it is still very much a revolution song. The message is, be essential and life-affirming to the bulk of people, and you will prevail.

Kuti, who was born in 1938 and died aged 58 in 1997 (more than one million people attended his funeral), was a pioneer of the Afrobeat genre. He was also a human rights activist, and a political giant to the people of Nigeria throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

He spoke out against the corruption of government officials, and was frank about the dire consequences colonialism had for African people. His criticism of the regime meant he made many enemies: he was arrested more than 200 times.

Today he's remembered as a brave voice, a cultural legend and a musical pioneer.

The National spoke to Kuti's son Seun last year, who is also a musician, and he dismissed the question he's often asked about in regard to living in his father's shadow: "My dad didn't leave a shadow, but instead a light. It is his light that is still pointing the way forward and helping us navigate these turbulent times."

Joshua's decision to walk out to Kuti's music isn't the first time he's made a nod to Nigeria just before a fight. In 2017 he chose Ojuelegba by Nigerian artist Wizkid as his walk out song.

Russian spy ship entering Panama Canal blocked

Russian spy ship entering Panama Canal blocked
Russian Navy's Northern Fleet

The Russian Navy's Northern Fleet, Yantar (Amber) naval vessel, has been blocked in Panama's territorial waters.

According to a report by uawire, the Russian vessel for the third day cannot leave the Panama, territorial waters because it has not received permission to enter the Panama Canal.

The report also added that, few days ago, the Russian news outlet Avia.pro reported that the Russian warship Yantar, which Russia calls "an oceanographic naval vessel", was blocked from entering the Panama Canal after a U.S. warplane flew over it.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry and other related agencies have made intensive, but so far inconclusive, attempts to resolve the issue of transit of the specialized vessel of the Russian Ministry of Defense "Yantar" through the Panama Canal and to resolve the unexpected claims made by the Administration of this hydraulic complex regarding the specific characteristics of the ship, which, according to local officials, can negatively affect the airlocks and cameras of the channel. The ship has been in the Cristobal port terminal for almost three days awaiting a transit permit, which leads to the ship failing to perform its tasks and can cause the ship to change its further route," reports the Telegram channel "the Operational Line".

However, according to a further report by this source, the Pentagon believes that the Yantar is a reconnaissance vessel which is gathering information on the Department of Defense Information Network (DoDIN), underwater sensors, and other equipment used by American submarines.

The report states that, the Yantar, part of the Russian Navy since 2015, has made numerous long trips around the globe.

Western military experts believe that the reconnaissance vessel may have deployed submersible remote-controlled unmanned vessels or deep-water manned bathyscaphes at the places where it remained stationary.

The Yantar is the primary vessel of project 22010 developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The ship's displacement is 5,200 tons, its length is 108.1 meters, and its width is 17.2 meters. Alongside the submersible unmanned vessels, the Yantar might carry the deep-water manned bathyscaphes Rus, Konsul and Mir.

Pope Francis in another rebuke recently of the Trump administration's border separation policy, the Clergy Father, compares President Donald Trump to King  Herod, who tried to kill baby Jesus, according to Breitbart's Thomas Williams, newsmax reports.

"In other parts there are walls that even separate children from parents," Francis said, per the report. "Herod comes to mind. Yet for drugs, there's no wall to keep them out.

"The phenomenon of migration is compounded by war, hunger and a 'defensive mindset,' which makes us in a state of fear believe that you can defend yourself only by strengthening borders. At the same time, there is exploitation."

The report however stated that, Pope Francis has been a frequent critic of President Trump's border wall, despite the fact his Vatican City is surrounded by walls in Rome, Italy.

"I must admit that I am shocked by some of the narratives I hear in Europe about borders," the Pope said, per the report. "Populism is gaining strength.

"The phenomenon of refugees has always existed, but today it is better known because of social differences, hunger, political tensions and especially war. For these reasons, migratory movements are intensifying."

"The Christian tradition has a rich evangelical experience in dealing with the problem of refugees," he added, per Breitbart. "We also remember the importance of welcoming the foreigner as the Old Testament teaches us."

The segregation of women from men in Saudi Arabia's restaurants, where women use separate entrances from men or sit behind partitions at restaurants will no langer stand, as Government puts an end to it.

According to a report by itv.com, the ruling is the latest measure announced by the Saudi government that upends conservative restrictions that have been in place for decades.

The decision according to the report, which essentially ends gender segregation rules in public, was announced in a lengthy and technically worded statement by the Municipal and Rural Affairs Ministry.

While some restaurants and cafes in the coastal city of Jiddah and Riyadh's upscale hotels had already been allowing unrelated men and women to sit freely, the move codifies what has been a sensitive issue in the past among traditional Saudis who view gender segregation as a religious requirement.

Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

Snatcha, one-half of the popular Rooftop MCs duo, has lost his wife Abimbola after brief illness.

They were married for 8 years and have three kids together.

Snatcha shared the sad news on Instagram, writing:

It's been 6 days since you have been gone, 6 days since my heart was forcefully ripped out. It's still hard to breathe.

People have been coming in large numbers and saying amazing stories of how you cared for them. I know they aren't just being nice because I watched you ballance your mountain of problems on your head so your hands can be free to help others with their rocks.

We spent almost every hour of 8 years with each other, I leaned on you for almost everything cos you were the organised one, the more administrative one whole I just freestyle everything. Good thing you taught me how to cook your way. Good thing I had all those years experience caring for you and the little people.

I'll give my life for Seven, Trinitee, zion, and Rain. You trust me, I know how particular you are about them. There's so much to say we'll talk offline.

I'm at peace because we had decided a while ago to live a life in service to God and to pour into the lives of others and you have lived every day trying to achieve that.

I know He gives grace when the burden is greater, He sends strength to the weak with more affliction. He sends mercy and gives joy. So don't worry about us. We will be OK and we will never forget you.

Good night my Adora(Adore her) Aka my sister in the Lord.
