The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says an estimated 26,039 babies will be born in Nigeria on New Year's Day.

UNICEF's Nigeria Representative, Mr Peter Hawkins, said on Wednesday in a statement Nigerian babies would account for almost seven per cent of the estimated 392,078 babies to be born on New Year's Day globally.

Hawkins said that this figure is the third highest number of babies in the world, after India with 67,385; and China, 46,299.

"The beginning of a new year and this year, a new decade, is a chance for us to reflect on our hopes and dreams for the future of Nigeria, especially for those who stand to inherit this country; its children.

"As we start each new year, we are reminded of the potential of each and every Nigerian child embarking on her or his life's journey if only they are given that chance to survive and thrive," he said.

The representative said, however, that for millions of newborns around the world, including in Nigeria, the day of their birth was far less auspicious, and sadly, was often their last.

According to him, 2.5 million newborns died in just their first month of life around the world in 2018; about a third of them on the first day of life.

"In Nigeria, this was 318,522 deaths; among those children, most died from preventable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis.

"In addition, more than 2.5 million babies are born dead each year, with more than 400,000 stillborn deaths taking place in Nigeria annually," he said.

Hawkins said that UNICEF's Every Child Alive campaign called for immediate investment in health workers with the right training.

According to him, workers, who are equipped with the right medicines to ensure every mother and newborn is cared for by a safe pair of hands to prevent and treat complications during pregnancy, delivery and birth.

"Too many mothers and newborns are not being cared for by a trained and equipped midwife or nurse, and the results are devastating.

"We can ensure that millions of babies survive their first day and live into this decade and beyond if every mother has good pregnancy care and every baby is born into a safe pair of hands.

"That means having well-equipped facilities with well-trained staff who can be there to welcome every Nigerian child into this world safely and healthily.

"This is especially critical as we now only have 10 years to deliver on the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," Hawkins said. NAN

The Government of Kano State, under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has banned persons of opposite genders from boarding same commercial tricycles.

Premium Times reports that beginning from January 2020, tricycles across the state will be disallowed from conveying both the male and female genders together across the state.

This development was disclosed by the Commander General of Hisbah Board, Harun Ibn-Sina, who represented Ganduje at the closing ceremony of 77th annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) organised by Zone A of Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSSN) held on Wednesday, December 25, 2019.

On why the government is committed to imposing the ban, Ibn-Sina who spoke on behalf of Ganduje, stated that the state government is committed to upholding Islamic values.

Commercial tricycles were introduced into the state by a former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.

Shekarau introduced the tricycles as a means of transportation for women only, after he banned them from boarding commercial motorcycles.

But since Shekarau's exit as governor, tricycles have been carrying people of both sexes.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his intention not to contest the 2023 presidential elections but determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that several ECOWAS members will be going to the polls in 2020.

Buhari made his position known in a letter to Nigerians issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Wednesday to mark the New Year, 2020.

The President said his decision to help strengthen the electoral process, particularly in Nigeria, was informed by the frustrations the nation's electoral system had triggered.

"Elections are the cornerstone of our democracy.

"I salute the commitment of the millions who voted in peace last February and of those leaders who contested for office vigorously but fairly, submitting to the authority of the electorate, the Independent National Electoral Commission and judicial process.

"I understand very well the frustrations our system has in the past triggered. I will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections.

"But I am determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across the region, where several ECOWAS members go to the polls this year,'' he said.

On security, the president said: "As Commander-in-Chief, my primary concern is the security of the nation and the safety of our citizens.

"When I assumed office in May 2015 my first task was to rally our neighbours so that we could confront Boko Haram on a coordinated regional basis. Chaos is not a neighbour any of us hope for.

"We have been fighting on several fronts: violent extremists, cultists and organised criminal networks. It has not been easy.

"But as we are winning the war, we also look to the challenge of winning the peace, the reconstruction of lives, communities and markets.''

According to the president, the North East Development Commission will work with local and international stakeholders to help create a new beginning for the region.

He also expressed government's readiness to continue to work with State Governors, neighbouring countries and the international partners to tackle the root causes of violent extremism and the networks that help finance and organise terror.

"Our security forces will receive the best training and modern weaponry, and in turn will be held to the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights.

"We will use all the human and emerging technological resources available to tackle kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery.

"The new Ministry of Police Affairs increased recruitment of officers and the security reforms being introduced will build on what we are already delivering.

"We will work tirelessly at home and with our allies in support of our policies to protect the security of life and property,'' he added.

Buhari maintained that his administration's actions would be governed by the rule of law as well as engagement with well-meaning leaders and citizens to promote dialogue, partnership and understanding.

"We need a democratic government that can guarantee peace and security to realise the full potential of our ingenious, entrepreneurial and hard-working people.

"Our policies are designed to promote genuine, balanced growth that delivers jobs and rewards industry.

"Our new Economic Advisory Council brings together respected and independent thinkers to advise me on a strategy that champions inclusive and balanced growth and above all fight poverty and safeguard national economic interests.

"As we have sat down to celebrate with friends and family over this holiday season, for the first time in a generation our food plates have not all been filled with imports of products we know can easily be produced here at home,'' he said.

He also noted that the nation's revolution in agriculture had become a reality in all corners of the country.

The president expressed the hope that the new agreements with Morocco, Russia and others would help access on attractive terms the inputs the country needed to accelerate the transformation in farming.

"A good example of commitment to this inclusive growth is the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Area and the creation of the National Action Committee to oversee its implementation and ensure the necessary safeguards are in place to allow us to fully capitalise on regional and continental markets.

"The joint land border security exercise currently taking place is meant to safeguard Nigeria's economy and security. No one can doubt that we have been good neighbours and good citizens.

"We have been the helpers and shock-absorbers of the sub-region but we cannot allow our well-planned economic regeneration to be sabotaged.

"As soon as we are satisfied that the safeguards are adequate, normal cross-border movements will be resumed,'' he added.

Nigerian afrobeats superstar and the CEO of DMW, Davido almost lost his mind last night after realizing his USD 30,000 wrist watch had been stolen.

According to media reports, this happened after having a great party at Ace Tantra night club located at Osu in Accra.

It's a surprise to many how he was outsmarted by the alleged thief(s) but things got nasty and messier when he realised he had lost his luxury watch.

He was captured in a short video aggressively yelling around for his watch.

Despite the heavy security around, the "Aye" hitmaker couldn't retrieve the wrist watch.

Davido and his ally Zlatan were in Ghana over the weekend for the ongoing Afro Nation Festival.

He was in a wild mood when he arrived last night but the mood was different when he left.

The Northern Governors' Forum said it would continue to work closely with President Muhammadu Buhari to create synergy, critical to achieving meaningful development of the Northern Region and the nation at large.

Simon Lalong, the Chairman of the forum and Governor of Plateau,  stated this in the group's New Year message issued to News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Wednesday in Jos.

Lalong called for a collective resolution to build a more united, prosperous and equitable country.

" The year 2020 is full of prospects and opportunities for Nigerians to again work for the upliftment of the country by supporting government at all levels to carry out development initiatives that will strengthen the economy and its people.

"All that is required is for all to demonstrate patriotism and genuine commitment to make the desired sacrifices that are needed to build a nation that is self sufficient and strong enough to provide opportunities for its people to flourish," he said.

He said insecurity had created many setbacks in the region, saying that collaborations with citizens would assure holistic measures to end the menace of criminal activities bent on unleashing terror and sorrow on Nigerians.

"The Northern Governors Forum remains committed to carrying out robust initiatives toward targeting poverty, illiteracy, diseases and insecurity that are plaguing many parts of the region and the nation.

"The Governors of the Northern Region will continue to peer review one another and also benchmark targets for regional development plans that will engender peaceful coexistence and people oriented programmes," the chairman said. NAN
