Terry G featuring Prettyboy D-O on 'Inspiration' proves 'alté' is dead

Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:30 PM PST

What's special about this one is that, an ode to marijuana and the need for freedom is built on an R&B beat - astonishing.

Date: February 12, 2020

Song Title: Inspiration

Artist: Terry G features Prettyboy D-O

Genre: R&B, Pon Pon

Producer: Terry G

Album: TBA

Video Director: San and Tse

Label: Terry G Entertainment

Details/Takeaway: What's special about this one is that, an ode to marijuana and the need for freedom is built on an R&B beat - astonishing.

Thoughts: For the longest time in Nigerian music, the criticism of alté-related acts has been their elitism and seclusive tendencies from the Nigerian mainstream. At the height of alté productivity and notoriety in Nigerian pop culture, the warning from culture enthusiasts in Nigerian music was that altéis not a sustainable movement and that it was not a genre of music.

Members of the alté demography were adamant and ever-so-slightly egotistical. On one part, one couldn't blame them - they had to to believe in what they were doing. More so, the criticism from certain Nigerian culture enthusiasts sometimes felt like cynicism towards the upper-middle class background of members of the alté demography.

But on the other hand, these culture enthusiasts had been on ground before most of the alté acts and they had a better understanding of the soundscape. Even if they were cynical towards alte background and elitism, all of them couldn't be wrong at the same time. Thus, their clamor for the seclusive tendencies of 'alté' which was embryonic at the time is now a living, breathing adult.

While alte is exemplary for its proof that collaboration within a demography can advance a demography and a conversation, for too long it kept to itself and stunted the growth of its proponents.

Even if it's not about stunted growth, but about the natural order of growth and realization for alté proponents who simply came of age and advance in understanding, then it means they were unnecessarily juvenile and adamant.

Nonetheless, as alte proponents are coming of age, they are breaking out of what was previously a convenient enclave of creativity. What they hoped - alte as a genre of music - has not materialized. Now, they are making music with more mainstream appeal.

Terry G featuring Prettyboy D-O is exactly the type of collaboration and brand of music that Nigerian culture lovers were calling for in those days. It is effectively the unification of mainstream and alté. While Prettyboy D-O always had shepeteri in him, this moment effectively certifies the death of alté as a genre of music.

Finito.

Jackye takes Omashola to the cleaners over perceived shade on Twitter

Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:30 PM PST

Okay guys, two of your favourite former Big Brother Naija housemates, Jackye and Omashola are having a mini drama on Twitter.

Omashola had taken to his Twitter on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, where he had posted a tweet.

"Sometimes spoil urself, no be every time you go they work like Jackie," he wrote.

It didn't take long before his fellow former housemate, Jackye who might have thought Omashola was shading her took to her Twitter page to drag him.

"To be the gr8tst u've 2keep working, innovating & creating valuable solutions not wasting ur time balling, u'll end up as a 40years old man with no wealth. PS: u haven't made since u left BBN 5% of profit I've made this February on a project #techmoney #noiseless #checkthestats," she tweeted.

The interesting thing about these tweets is that a lot of people have different opinions about them, especially those of Jackie's.

For some, she took it too far by dragging Omashola and for another, the reality TV star wasn't even referring to Jackye.

While a majority of those reacting to the drama believe Jackye is trying to use Omashola to trend and seek for attention on social media. Omashola is yet to respond to Jackye's rants on Twitter.

We, however, hope this doesn't degenerate to a full-blown celebrity beef.

Dwayne Wade Shar6 his Experience Parenting a Transgender Child

Posted: 12 Feb 2020 06:30 AM PST

Dwyane Wade's 12-year-old, Zaya, came out as transgender, and now he's sharing the experience with Ellen DeGeneres.

He and wife Gabrielle Union are now proud parents of an LGBT child, he shared, and allies, but they had a lot of learning to do when their daughter came out. He said:

First of all, me and my wife Gabrielle, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud allies as well. We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question, our child comes home with an issue, our child comes home with anything, it's our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, to give the best feedback we can. And that doesn't change because sexuality is now involved in it.

Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home… first, Zion. I don't know if everyone knows, originally named Zion. Zion, born as a boy, came home and said, 'Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I'm ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I'd love for you guys to call me Zaya.

So, that was our job to go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship we have. My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of Pose. We just tried to figure out as much information as we [could] to make sure we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self.

Once Zion came home and said 'call me Zaya' and was ready to take on this, I looked at her and said, 'You are a leader. It's our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.' Right now it's through us, because she's 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her.

United Kingdom set to fine harmful online content source
United Kingdom

The British government has concluded plans to give regulators the power to fine social media companies( Facebook and Twitter) for harmful material shared through their platforms.

In a statement on Wednesday, the UK authorities; said it will give power to the telecommunications watchdog, Ofcom, to enforce a "duty of care" on companies, "to protect users from harmful and illegal terrorist and child abuse content".

Companies that allow harmful material to flourish or don't remove it quickly could be sanctioned, the government said.

Ofcom, which currently supervises the radio and television broadcasters, has the power to impose fines or even sanctions on repeat offenders by taking them off the air.

The government added that it was "minded" to make the changes, but some new legislation will be needed for it to be operational. To this end, the officials would be working to draft a new law in no time.

Nicky Morgan, UK's Digital Secretary said the new regulations would be "proportionate and strong".

"We have an incredible opportunity to lead the world in building a thriving digital economy, driven by groundbreaking technology, that is trusted by and protects everyone in the UK," she said.

However following the announcement, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, welcomed the development and said "a duty of care model that puts the onus on big tech to prevent online harms" is good.

On their part, the free-speech advocates have expressed concerns about State attempts to limit activity that may be harmful but is not illegal.
