Blessing Okoro: Stop being so desperate for marriage by giving men money

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:30 PM PST

Controversial relationship blogger, Blessing Okoro has urged women to stop taking care of men financially.

According to her, women have become desperate for marriage that they take on this responsibility. In a lengthy Instagram video, she spoke about the importance of men providing for women as it has been written in the holy book.

According to her, while women were cursed with going through labour to birth a child, a man's curse is to provide. She went on to differentiate between a man and a boy. According to her, take away that responsibility of providing from a man and he becomes a jobless boy whose only interest is sleeping with women.

"Women stop providing for men. Stop being so desperate for marriage by giving them money. You have made them constantly lazy and they have become boys. Allow a man take up his responsibility to provide. That is his job. A man sole responsibility to provide.

A man is built to provide. Take away provision from a man, he is a boy. If a man cannot provide, he is a boy. And a boy only bothers about who he will sleep with since he is jobless. Even if he is not financially buoyant, let there be an attempt from him before you assist," she said.

Ultimate Love: Tension in the Love Pad as Love Guests put each other up nominations

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:00 AM PST

The honeymoon phase relationships between the Love Guests might have come to an end after last night's nominations.

There was tension in the Ultimate Love pad over the weekend following the nominations that took place.

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, the Live show of Nigeria's first love reality show, Ultimate Love was held. The hosts for the show, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, and Seun P were on hand to give viewers a worthwhile on the show. Lest we forget, these guys came out looking like a million bucks!

As usual, the show kicked off with the in house live band, 'High Definition' who gave an outstanding performance all evening.

The business of the evening

The business of the evening started with Dakore revealing the couples in the house and the names they had chosen for themselves. The newbies in the house are Chris and Chris who are now called #DoubleChris, Meriton and Jerry now #Jertion and Sylvia and Chiddy Bankz are now #Chivia.

The old and already established couples in the Love Pad include Jay and Nkechi (#JayKech), Ebiteinye and Obichukwu (#ObiEbi), Presh Talker and David Wilson (#PreshDavid), Michael and Cherry (MiCherry), Rosie and Kachi (#Roskie), Theresa and Iyke (#Iykeresa), Bolanle and Arnold (#Bolar) and Jenny Koko and Louis (#Jelo).

After confirming the names of the couples in the house, Dakore then told the Love Guests that it was time for them to nominate each other for possible check out (eviction).

The nominations

At the end of the nominations, Dakore revealed to all the Love Guests and viewers how they nominated. PreshDavid nominated ObiEbi and Chivia, JayKech nominated Jeriton and Chivia, while Jeriton nominated Iykeresa and MiCherry.

It didn't end there as Bolar nominated ObiEbi and PreshDavid, Jelo nominated ObiEbi and MiCherry, ObiEbi nominated PreshDavid and DoubleChris while Iykeresa nominated Jertion and Chivia.

For Chivia, they nominated Jeriton and PreshDavid, Micherry went on to nominate Chivia and Jertion, Roskie nominated PreshDavid and Jeriton and finally, DoubleChris nominated Chivia and Iykeresa.

These nominations mean Chivia and Jeriton with five nominations, PreshDavid with four, ObiEbi with three, Micherry with two and Iykeresa with two nominations are up for possible check out (eviction).

However, Aunty came into the house after the nominations to select two couples (Jertion and Chivia) who are up for possible checkout for a task. The couple who can win the task will automatically be removed from the nominations list.

The mild drama

Immediately the live nomination show ended, it was obvious that there was going to be tension in the Pad. It didn't take long before Jenny Koko called out Bolanle for revealing a conversation that they had about nominating MiCherry.

This, however, didn't go down well with Jenny Koko as she slammed Bolanle who was caught in the middle of a heated argument.

Things got messy when Louis got involved in the argument had a very tensed conversation with Cherry. It took the intervention of the other Love Guests to settled what would have been a free for all fight in the house.

The voting starts on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, across the continent and ends on Thursday, Feb 27, 2020.

AMVCA 2020: In pure irony, the viewers’ choice does not count

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:30 AM PST

The Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA), now in its seventh edition, has been branded as one of the most prestigious entertainment awards in Africa but is it? Does the AMVCA count in overall industry growth and audience building?

Awards are more for business than for entertainment, at least when they are properly done. The power in a statuette is measured by how much value the awarding party and other stakeholders have built around it.

Globally, awards in film and general entertainment are a big deal. Statistically, in Hollywood, an academy award has the potential to increase a film's revenue by at least 25 million dollars among other gains, including prestige and more projects.

This is why lots of money is spent campaigning for the nominations to win. More importantly, awards open up never-had conversations about the films and the people involved in them. These conversations leave the strongest after effects for everyone – audience and all.

The AMVCA is branded a viewers' choice award but has failed in drawing and building a film community that is allowed to make a choice. On February 6, the nomination list was announced for the 2020 edition. Out of the 28 categories, only seven are open to public voting.

The remaining 21 are to be judged by a panel led by Femi Odugbemi. Speaking on his role as head judge, Odugbemi said, "I am hopeful that we can continue the tradition of high integrity of these awards towards honouring achievement and best practices."

His competence as a judge is not in question as he has overtime, proven himself as a fair juror and most recently, he became a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Apart from him, the other members of the panel are unknown. This would not be a problem if they were to judge seven and leave the viewers to vote for 21 categories. The biggest viewer choice award – People's choice awards has over 95 percent public voting categories all with clear guidelines. If a model is going to be copied, it should be done well.

Realistically speaking, awards do not matter until they are made to matter. They are ego boosting events created to sell fashion and maybe, social consciousness. But at the base of all these, they were created for conversation and audience priming. Neither of which Nollywood or African awards are doing.

The most important category for Nollywood is the Best Movie (West Africa) and for 2020, the nominees are 'God Calling', 'Seven', 'Elevator Baby', 'Living In Bondage' and 'Ratnik'. 2018 fan-favourite 'King of Boys' was left out of the category, giving 'Living in Bondage' a clear advantage.

It is not only the most commercially successful out of the lot but it has generated some of the most conversations. However, it is clear that this award will do little or no good to the team behind this film.

The reason is the simple, sad fact that the audience will not be able to select or vote for their favourite 'Best film'. The same thing goes for the Best Soundtrack category for which both 'King of Boys' and 'Living in Bondage' (LIB), which had the best original songs in the review period, were nominated.

All that work to produce great original music for a film and no way to create mainstream conversation about it with the 'biggest' viewers' choice award in Africa. For a company that does a great job in shaping and presenting the most talked-about celebrities in Africa through its Big Brother show, it is interesting how it is finding it hard to do a decent thing for film.

Clearly, the audience is only deemed fit enough to talk about and vote for randy behaviour for housemates in an enclosed house. This explains why the only voting category open are best actors and actresses. It is assuming that they lack the intelligence to pick the movies and elements they like.

So, they are left with voting according to the sways of the social media popularity of actors and nothing else of substance. They are not trusted by the AMVCA to vote Best Television Series, Best Writer (which basically celebrates plot development) or Best Indigenous Film.

In a funny twist, they are also not trusted enough to vote for Best Makeup or Best Costume which they can clearly judge from seeing the movie. Look at the numbers Big Brother Naija pulled and the people who made sure to watch and vote because they knew it counted.

If such huge campaigns can be done for a profanity circus, imagine the weight award campaigns will pull when done right, if the audience realised that all they needed to do was to go and see the movie. Nollywood must employ every weapon in its arsenal.

To reiterate its role in growing the film industry, The Channel Director, Africa Magic, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, said that the AMVCAs has continued to inspire and celebrate contributions of African filmmakers, actors and industry specialists as they promote the growth of the continent's film and television industry.

On the night of the nomination announcements, the official hashtag on twitter had a little over 10,000 engagements. Films have done better than this on their own. The truth is, without the addition of Viewers' Choice as a differentiator, the awards would be a light source without direction.

Nonetheless, the biggest wins from the nominations were the underdogs recognised across board. LIB's star, Jide-Kene Achufusi aka Swanky JKA, Toni Tones and Reminisce in 'King of Boys'; and Timini Egbuson in 'Elevator Baby'.

Also, the recognition of Uzor Arukwe and Zainab Balogun, both with double nominations is noteworthy. The best and toughest voting category is Best Actor in a Drama, with its catalogue of fresh faces, who made their mark in the review period, with only Ramsey Noah being the known face.

As the industry awaits the award day, a lot of the anxiety is geared toward the pomp and pageantry of the red carpet. Fashion analysis will be terribly skewed away from the real reason why the talents are in the spotlights in the first place.

Somehow, in the haze of activity, the industry might miss the opportunity to have the right conversations and engage the audience. While it is hoped that this does not happen, it will, anyway.

Harvey Weinstein found guilty on rape and sex assault charges

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:00 AM PST

Harvey Weinstein is likely to spend the next five years behind bars following the court's ruling on the sexual assault charges levelled against him.

Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of the rape and sex assault charges levelled against him.

CNN reports that the verdict was reached Monday, February 24, 2020, by a jury in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, New York after deliberating for twenty-six hours.

Weinstein was charged with two counts of rape, one count of criminal sexual act and two counts of predatory sexual assault.

The jury found Weinstein guilty on two counts of criminal sexual assault, but not guilty on three others, including predatory sexual assault.

According to CNN, the reason he wasn't found guilty of the predatory sexual assault charge was that his accuser couldn't remember the date and place of the rape incident. This made it difficult for the jury to conclude.

The disgraced movie mogul is likely to face at most twenty-five years in jail or at least five years, depending on the ruling. The judge, however, remanded Harvey in prison custody.

The date for the final ruling has been fixed for March 2020.

The list of the female actors who alleged they were assaulted by Weinstein includes Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lupita Nyong'o who gave a very descriptive detail of her different experiences with the movie mogul.

Vanessa Bryant eulogies Kobe Bryant and daughter Gigi in heartbreaking tribute

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 02:30 AM PST

Vanessa Bryant, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O' Neal pay tributes to Kobe Bryant and daughter, Gigi.

The tribute service for the late National Basketball Association (NBA) star, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi has been held.

The service which took place at the Staple Center, Los Angeles, saw the widow of the late NBA legend, Venessa Bryant deliver a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband and daughter.

She, first of all, thanked everyone for the outpour of love they have received since the demise of her husband and daughter.

"I'd like to thank everyone for coming today. The outpouring of love and support that my family has felt from around the world has been so uplifting. Gianna Bryant is an amazingly sweet and gentle soul. She was always thoughtful

"She was daddy's girl but I know she loved her mamma. She was one of my very best friends. She had the best laugh. It was infectious, it was pure and genuine. Kobe and Gianna naturally gravitated toward each other," she said.

She went on to talk about how she would never see her daughter get to drive, get married and have the father and daughter dance.

"We will not be able to see Gianna go to highschool with Natalia … we didn't get the chance to teach her how to drive a car," said Vanessa. "I won't be able to tell her how gorgeous she looks on her wedding day. I'll never get to see my baby girl walk down the aisle, have a father-daughter dance with her daddy … or have babies of her own," she said.

She went on to eulogise her late husband with some heartfelt and emotional words.

"He was the most amazing husband. Kobe loved me more than I could ever express or put into words. I have no idea how I deserved a man who loved or wanted me more than Kobe. We loved each other with our whole beings, two perfectly imperfect people making a beautiful family and raising our sweet and amazing girls," she said.

The tribute service was attended by friends, family and former teammates of Kobe Bryant in attendance. NBA legend, Michael Jordan paid a tribute to Kobe and kind of lightened the mood in the venue with his memes jokes.

Beyonce gave an outstanding but emotional performance of two of Kobe's favourite songs, 'Halo' and 'XO.'

Kobe Bryant and his daughter were buried weeks ago in a private ceremony that was attended by their family members.
