Bukky Wright’s Son, Ojayy writes: My Mother’s Fame Is Affecting My Music Career

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:00 PM PST

Ojayy Wright, afro Pop singer and son of popular Nollywood actress, Bukky Wright, has attributed the low moments in his music career to his mum's fame.

He revealed this in a recent chat with Segun Adebayo, when asked why he is one of the most underrated acts in Nigeria.

"I think people are right to imagine that, so I would easily say they have every reason to think like that. But personally, I think it stemmed from the pressure to succeed my mother, who is an actress. So people just expect more from me."

Read excerpts below:

Don't you think the pressure of being the son of Bukky Wright is weighing you down?

Well, you are right because it definitely affected my breakthrough a bit. As I said, people just expect more from me than the average person. But it isn't weighing me down. I relish the challenge of being who I am and the position I have been put in.

At a point, it appeared you wanted to ride on the back of your mum's success as a celebrated thespian.

I was never trying to ride anyone's back. I am the son of Bukky Wright. People are always going to say this or that about me and I just had to learn to deal with it. I can't hide who I am, especially if you have a parent as famous as mine. However, life has been good, I have been working on more music and movies.

One would expect that being the son of a celebrity would help your career and take you a step ahead of others. How much influence did her status have on your music career?

It has a decent amount of influence on my career. But again, it has its high and low moments, being famous before actually becoming famous can mess with your head. But I am sure at the end of the day, my last name will still work for me. That's years and decades of work and legacy that go into that name "Wright" and nothing anyone can do about it once God says it is time!

Growing up with her, what kind of mum was she and how much did she indulge you in your quest to do music?

She's very strict. but I couldn't ask for a better mother. She was all about school when I first started and she didn't actually support me in the beginning. I think it's partly because she knew what she went through to get to where she is today and she knew it would be difficult for me. But eventually after several songs, she gave in and she has been supportive ever since.

There was a time we learnt that you both disagree on the way forward. Was it that she disapproved of your career path or you disagreed on how she wanted you to run your game?

She actually disapproved of how I wanted to run my game. I was still young and I just got out of school. I was very enthusiastic about getting into the game and the real world but at the same time, I was naive and she could see that. But it wasn't anything major, we quickly settled the whole thing.

Terry G – I am the ‘Jesus’ of Nigerian Music

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:00 PM PST

Singer, Terry G, has described himself as the "Jesus" of Nigerian music, saying he set the pace for the present trend in the industry.

The "Free Madness" crooner who has been silent in the musical scene for some years, claimed that Nigerians have now embraced his kind of music.

Terry G who spoke to Channels Television on Tuesday, admitted that he was criticised and discriminated because he smokes, and for his kind of music when he started out years ago.

"I'm the Jesus of Nigerian music, I'm not the Christ. The Christ is the savior, Jesus is a name, and for the fact that Jesus is the most popular name that died for us and sacrificed for us," the singer explained.

He added, "It took me a while to take this risk that a lot of persons discriminated against me for and now, they see people smoking, doing stuff and nobody is talking. There must be a pace-setter."

According to Terry G, he is the "Jesus" of the Nigerian music industry who set the pace and sacrificed for his artistic genre.

He, however, claimed many Nigerians were hypocritical, adding that they have embraced and supported most of the things they criticised him for in the past.

Comparing himself to rave of the moment, Naira Marley, Terry G admitted that it was not in his place to decide whether he was more influential than the UK-trained artiste.

Marley, the singer said, is only trying to 'archive' him, although he sees both of them "making the world go crazier."

The "Akpako Master" also revealed that he once rejected a deal with Sony Music, claiming that it did not pay.

He, therefore, called on Nigerian singers to ensure they understand the details of every agreement before they sign deals.

In addition, Terry G urged artistes to take advantage of their fame, saying it does not last forever.

"When the lights are shining on you, do not think that they would be forever. My own fame was full of pressure, controversies," he decried.

Diesel engine car sales in 20 years low as sector awaits 2035 ban

New diesel engine cars sales has reportedly felled by 36% in January, the worst since the turn of the millennium, following talks about clean air zones and the recently announced 2035 vehicle ban.

According to a report by Yahoo news, the overall, new car registrations fell by 7.3% in January. Petrol car sales fell by 9.5%, while alternatively fuelled cars continued to grow in popularity, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

New registrations of hybrid electric cars climbed by 20.6%, while demand for plug-in hybrid electric cars more than doubled, jumping 111%.

The source further stated, that the figures for last month came a day after it emerged that hybrid vehicles would be included in the government's vehicle ban, which will now also come into force five years earlier than expected.

The reports called 2020 the "defining year of climate action," prime minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday said that 2035 would be the last year that consumers could buy diesel, petrol, and hybrid vehicles.

The ban was previously due to come into effect in 2040, and was not expected to include hybrid vehicles.

"For the UK market to stand any chance of meeting the extremely challenging 2035 goal, an extensive package of government support is vital," the SMMT said on Wednesday.

"These measures must support a smooth and sustainable transition for industry and consumers, whatever their income or driving needs."

Analysts have cited increasing moves to reduce carbon emissions as a major factor in the sharp drop-off in diesel car sales. The decline in January, the steepest since 2000, means that sales of those vehicles have now fallen for 34 straight months.

Diesel car sales now account for just 19.8% of the new car market. Just a year ago, they represented almost 30%.

The SMMT said that consumers continue to be confused about clean air zones and their impact on diesel vehicles.

The zones, also known as low-emissions zones, are being considered in UK cities such as Birmingham, London, and Leicester.

From 2021, Bristol is set to become the UK's first city to ban diesel cars from entering parts of its city centre.

"The new car market is a key driver of the UK's overall economy, so another month of decline is unsettling," said Mike Hawes, the CEO of the SMMT.

"Consumer confidence is not returning to the market and will not be helped by government's decision to add further confusion and instability by moving the goalposts on the end of sale of internal combustion engine cars."

Lady narrates how she delivered her baby by herself in a Taxify cab after being stuck in Lagos traffic, says driver was traumatized

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:30 AM PST

A new mum, Nkechi Okechukwu has just narrated an interesting story of how delivered her baby in a Taxify cab.

Believe me, the story will move you to tears, make you smile and at the same time give thanks to God!

Read below:

"So what I wasn't even sure was contraction started this morning at about 6:30am. Thought they were just cramps but as they intensified, we had to head to the hospital by 6:50am.

We were heading to Eko hospital Ikeja from Ogba. Lagos traffic this morning was gangster. We decided to take Oregun road. At the time the contractions had become unbearably painful. But I just kept telling myself we would still make it in good time as my water had kuku not broken yet. Before I knew what was happening water broke o. ⠀

This was about 7:30 or so. And I calmly made the announcement so that my husband sitting in front and driver would not panic more than necessary. Got to Oregun and traffic was really bad. By this time, with each contraction I was groaning like a wounded lion (no kidding!). ⠀

There's a level of pain that is beyond cry o! I remember they always warn us at antenatal that we should never push (resist as much as possible) until we are up to 10cm dilated else you harm yourself or the baby. But then, when one is at about 7-8cm, the body just keeps pushing the baby out by itself and that's always the hardest part of labour for me. I resisted for as long as I could, plus no medical personnel to check me if I had gotten to 10cm yet. ⠀

By that time my husband was telling the driver we should turn back and look for any hospital around Oregun. At the same time I told both of them that if they have any doctor friend they should call for me to speak with the person and ask how I can deliver the baby and what to do when it comes (by this time I already knew he was going to come in the car). They called a doctor and that one was just shouting 'tell her not to push o, she should hold on small while you guys find a hospital around'.⠀

Hold on ke, me that could already feel head, despite the fact that I closed my legs shut, trying to keep the baby in. The next contraction and groan sent the head out fully. And I just kept shouting 'oh shit, he's here, oh my God, he's here!' My husband turned and saw head. Before he could turn a second time, I had a whole baby in my hands.

Survivor, Actress, Toyosi Adesanya – How Odunlade Adekola’s P.A was killed by Fulani Herdsmen

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:30 AM PST

A fast rising Yoruba actor, identified as Juwon Awe who was also a former personal assistant to actor, Odunlade Adekola was killed by armed bandits in Ote, Kwara State, on Monday. Not only that, others, including Nollywood actress, Toyosi Adesanya who were in the vehicle, were injured and robbed of their belongings.

In this interview with FEMI OGUNTAYO, one of the survivors of the attack, actress, Toyosi Adesanya, who spoke from the hospital bed in Ilorin, gives details of the experience.

Read excerpt;

How was Juwon Awe killed, and how did it happen?

We were going to the location of a movie by Damola Olatunji in Ilorin, Kwara State when these Fulani herdsmen appeared on the road and started shooting at us. Juwon, who was driving, tried to dodge them, and he was targeted and shot. The bullet entered through the side window and he was killed. When he was shot dead, we lost control and the car almost somersaulted. It was God that saved us. So, they came, attacked us, collected all our phones and gadgets and belongings.
It was only the cloth we were wearing that they did not collect. There was one guy among them that was more like a Yoruba man. His Yoruba was so fluent. We were stranded there for almost six hours and they also robbed some other vehicles. We were lying down on the road there for almost six hours not knowing they had gone, because they told us if we looked up, they would kill us all. They said in pidgin, "we go gun all of you down".

Who were those with you?

My personal assistant was there with me, my younger brother who drives me was there also. Juwon just volunteered to drive me on the fateful day because my brother was tired.

There were reports that the deceased was your personal assistant?

He was not my personal assistant. My P.A is a lady. Juwon was formerly with Odunlade Adekola but it seems they had some issues, and Odun told Juwon to leave. So, Juwon went to Kemi Afolabi's place for some time before coming to meet me. He even went to meet Toyin Adegbola (Asewo to re Mecca) and she told him to let her see Odunlade first before anything.

It was still today (Tuesday, January 28th) that I was thinking of taking him to TAMPAN meeting to beg Odunlade (Adekola) on his behalf. My thinking is that if he would not even take him back, let him be with one of us. So, it was since 2 of January that Juwon started coming to my place in Akure and I just felt I should help him, because I have known him for some time too with Odun.

So, would you say it was a targeted attack or was just a robbery gone bloody?

They were just there looking for who to rob, because I don't think they knew we were coming

Timi Dakolo - “Raising children is an investment”

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 12:30 AM PST

Timi Dakolo, winner of the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007, has opined that raising a child is an investment and the reward for doing so is not only financial.

The father of three stated this after he shared a post calling on his followers who have other people's children living with them, to ensure they treat them right as they may end up being their saving grace when they grow old.

While some of his followers agreed with him, one argued that treating a child right should not be a business transaction where a reward is expected.
