Former governor of Lagos state, Fashola backs okada ban, narrates how they once robbed him

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 11:30 PM PST

Reactions continue to trail the hardship that has accompanied the decision by the Lagos State Government to ban bikes and tricycles in parts of the state.

A former governor of the state and one who also initiated the ban during his tenure, Babatunde Fashola has weighed in.

The former governor who now serves as the Minister of Works and Housing says the use of motorcycles as a major means of transportation is not in the plan of Lagos State and should be banned.

Mr Fashola spoke at a public lecture organised by the United Action for Change in Lagos on Thursday.

He said: "If you are concerned about security you must support the present Lagos governor now on Okada ban. As the Center of Excellence, motorcycles should not be our choice of transport," He said

He went on to add that the business had become a camouflage for criminals.

He said, "Do we stand in reacting mode or proactive mode. If reacting, there is already a victim and a criminal. If we are proactive then how long can we sustain that?

"Motorcycles are means of peddling drugs to children even under the watch of parents without knowing. I've always held this position. Motorcycle has always been a conduit pipe for the opioid crisis among youths. We must act to eliminate anonymity.

"I was robbed in my home, in fact on my bed in 1999. Organised crime is dynamic, criminals are aware that people don't keep money at home again, now they diversified into kidnapping people for ransom."

Reality TV star Mercy Eke aka Mercy Lambo's few minutes of fame have been truncated by thick-minded fans after she paraded a Lamborghini Aventador on her social media page today. Thank God she. didn't claim ownership for clout, the story would have been worse by now.

After the 'pitch fork' people went extra mile to know who borrowed the reality TV star a Lamborghini, and now the world is now sure that it's courtesy of 'Paul Okoye'.

Well we think there is one of Paul's music video coming up very soon that will feature Mercy Eke.

Recall that Mercy announced weeks ago that the end of her career as a video vixen is here, stating that she promised to do only one more job after the BBNaija show before ending her video vixen career.

We guess this would be her last job as a vixen.

Death of Doctor from Coronavirus triggers mourning, fury at Chinese Officials

The death of a young doctor who was reprimanded for warning about China's new virus triggered an outpouring on Feb. 7 of praise for him and fury that communist authorities put politics above public safety.

In death, Dr. Li Wenliang became the face of simmering anger at the ruling Communist Party's controls over information and complaints that officials lie about or hide disease outbreaks, chemical spills, dangerous consumer products or financial frauds.

The 34-year-old ophthalmologist died overnight at Wuhan Central Hospital, where he worked and likely contracted the virus while treating patients in the early days of the outbreak.

"A hero who released information about Wuhan's epidemic in the early stage, Dr. Li Wenliang is immortal," the China Center for Disease Control's chief scientist, Zeng Guang, wrote on the Sina Weibo microblog service.

Police in December had reprimanded eight doctors including Li for warning friends on social media about the emerging threat. China's supreme court later criticized the police, but the ruling party also has tightened its grip on information about the outbreak.

Weibo users have left hundreds of thousands of messages below Li's last post.

A post by one of Li's coworkers, an emergency room nurse, said the freezing Wuhan weather was "as gloomy as my mood."

"To you, we are angels and so strong. But how strong a heart can watch the people around me fall one by one without being shocked?" wrote Li Mengping on her verified account.

Others placed blame for the deaths on Chinese officials, not an animal species from where the virus might have spread, and said those who made trouble for the doctor should face consequences. The most pointed online comments were quickly deleted by censors.

The ruling party has faced similar accusations of bungling or thuggish behavior following previous disasters. They include the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, a 2005 chemical spill that disrupted water supplies to millions of people in China's northeast, sales of tainted milk that sickened thousands of children and the failure of private finance companies after the global economic crisis.

In each case, officials were accused of trying to conceal or delay release of information members of the public said they needed to protect themselves.

The Communist Party often responds by allowing the public to vent temporarily, then uses its control of media and the internet to stifle criticism. Critics who persist can be jailed on vague charges of spreading rumors or making trouble.

On the streets of Beijing, the capital, residents expressed sadness and said that China should learn from Li.

"He is such a nice person, but still didn't pull through," said Ning Yanqing. "Those left do not dare to speak out. Alas, I don't know what to say."

Some online comments Friday hinted at broader dissatisfaction with the Party and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who has tightened controls on society since taking power in 2012.

The most powerful Chinese leader since at least the 1980s, Xi gave himself the option of remaining "president for life" by changing the Chinese constitution in 2018 to remove a two-term limit.

Referring to one of Xi's propaganda initiatives, a message that circulated on social media said, "My 'Chinese Dream' is broken."

In Wuhan, local leaders were accused of telling doctors in December not to publicize the spreading virus in order to avoid casting a shadow over the annual meeting of a local legislative body.

As the virus spread, doctors were ordered to delete posts on social media that appealed for donations of medical supplies. That prompted complaints authorities were more worried about image than public safety.

Li was detained by police after warning about the virus on a social media group for his former classmates.

The latest episode is unusually awkward for the ruling party because Li was a physician, part of a group who are regarded as overworked, underpaid heroes who are China's line of defense against a frightening new disease.

"He showed a responsible attitude toward the society," said Cai Lin, a Beijing resident. "He is honest and faithful. So I think the whole society should reflect on this."

The World Health Organization, which has complimented China's response to the outbreak, said in a tweet that "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Li Wenliang. We all need to celebrate work that he did on" the virus.

The official propaganda apparatus tried Friday to mollify the public.

"Some of Li Wenliang's experiences during his life reflect shortcomings and deficiencies in epidemic prevention and control," said state television on its website.

The Chinese ambassador to Washington, Cui Tiankai, said in Twitter, a service the ruling party's internet censorship blocks the public from seeing, "Really saddened by the death of Dr. Li Wenliang. He was a very devoted doctor. We are so grateful to him for what he has done in our joint efforts fighting against #2019nCoV."

The government announced a team from Beijing would be sent to Wuhan to investigate "issues reported by the masses involving Dr. Li Wenliang."

Trump acquitted of all charges in US Senate impeachment trial

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 01:30 AM PST

The President of the United States Donald Trump has been acquitted of all charges by the US senate over the charges of obstruction of congress and abuse of power leveled against him by the House of Reps.

On Wednesday, the Republican majority senate voted against impeaching the president, bringing the impeachment trial to an end.

'48 senators have pronounced Donald John Trump, president of the United States, guilty as charged. 52 senators have announced him not guilty as charged. 2/3 of the senators present not finding him guilty, the Senate judges Donald John Trump – the president of the United States – is not guilty as charged in the first article of impeachment,' Chief Justice Roberts announced after the vote.

But in a remarkable move, Republican Mitt Romney, who has been critical of the president in the past, voted against the president in the charge of 'abuse of power'

He was the only Republican to do so in a move that stunned Capitol Hill.

'The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the president committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a "high crime and misdemeanor,' Romney said ahead of the vote. 'Yes, he did.'

He voted to acquit on the obstruction of Congress charge.

Mitt Romney, a deeply-religious Mormon, said his faith as the reason behind his decision.

'The allegations made in the articles of impeachment are very serious. As a senator juror, I swore an oath before god to exercise impartial justice. I am profoundly religious. My faith is at the heart of who I am. I take an oath before god as enormously consequential.

I knew from the outset that being tasked with judging the president, the leader of my own party would be the most difficult decision I have ever faced,' he said in his remarks on the Senate floor.

Romney said he was convinced President Trump abused his power as because it involved Joe and Hunter Biden, Trump's political rivals.

'There's no question in my mind that were there names not Biden the president would never have done what he did,' Romney said.

Romney acknowledged in a pre-taped interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace that aired just immediately after he voted against the president, that he could lose his next election campaign for not supporting Trump and that his life in Washington D.C. was about to get 'lonely.'

'It's going to get very lonely. The consequences are significant. They are enough that it made it very difficult process for me. There's not been a morning since this process began that I slept beyond 4:00 a.m.,' he said.
