Yul Edochie: Why I didn’t kneel to propose to my wife

Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:07 AM PST

Veteran actor, Pete Edochie's son, Yul has opened up on his stand on men who kneel down to propose marriage to women.

According to Yul, he didn't kneel to propose to his wife after all.

"I didn't kneel because I didn't have to. My wife didn't ask me to kneel and propose to her. I got married many years ago, 2004 or so. But I will tell you what I think about kneeling to propose. To an extent, my father is right. It is not our culture. It is foreign.

"But it is actually no big deal. It is not that serious. Whether you kneel or lie down to propose, the woman who would leave you, would. The one who won't respect you, won't respect you. The one who would love you, respect you and stick with you, will surly do regardless of how you proposed.

"MY FATHER IS 73 YEARS AGO, MUCH RESPECT TO HIM, BUT YOU SEE, HE IS SPEAKING FROM HIS OWN ERA. HE LIVES IN THAT TIME WHEN THEY DON'T NEED TO KNEEL TO PROPOSE," he said.

Recall that last week, a video surfaced online in which Pete Edochie insisted that men who kneel to propose were idiots and foolish.

He said, "Any young man who gets down on his knees to propose to a girl is not just an idiot, he is a bloody fool. The reason I am saying this is simple– we try to copy white people.

"The white man kneels down to propose to a girl. You know what it means? The girl takes over the family. That is why whenever a man disagrees with his wife overseas, he would be kicked out and his wife would take over the house.

"If you call that civilization; it is alright. Kneel down before your wife and I would sympathise with you when she takes over the home."

How Chi Mhende conquered nerves to star in Queen Sono

Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PST

Chi Mhende says she feels inspired by her character's complexity in Queen Sono, Netflix's first African original series.

If Chi Mhende could handpick a superhero power for herself, she confesses it'd be invisibility - a surprising choice for an actress with remarkable screen presence.
For three years, Mhende was Wandile Radebe, a male character (that later transitions into a trans woman) on popular South African soapie, Generations: The Legacy.

Playing the character came with its personal and professional tolls, majorly the physical demands of a woman pretending to be a man on TV, and real life questions about her femininity.

Overcoming that was never going to be easy for the Zimbabwean actress, especially when your next project is Netflix's Queen Sono, the streaming giant's first African original series.

The show, set to start streaming on February 28, is a rare exploration of African spy craft with Pearl Thusi, leading an ensemble cast of South Africa's best and brightest acts, playing the titular character.

Mhende is Miriro Dube, the director general of the Special Operations Group (SOG), a South African intelligence agency so secret only a handful of people are privy to its existence.

To do faithful justice to this character, Miri had to overcome one problem - nerves.

"If I had to pick one challenge, it would be that I felt nervous and obviously doubted myself but I overcame that because I trusted that I could do the work," she tells Pulse during an interview that had to be conducted over the phone courtesy of the snail's pace of the South African embassy to process a visa.

While Thusi's thrill-seeking Sono runs around breaking protocols, and wreaking havoc with reckless abandon, Mhende's Miri is there to keep everyone's feet on the ground to ensure everything goes to plan all the time, earning her the unstated tag of party pooper.

To get on the same page with this straight-laced character, Mhende says she had to have her hair sprayed to keep it straight, wear tight clothes, and a corset to hold her spine.

"All of that was part of the preparation of keeping her as stoic and as hard as possible," she tells Pulse.

Mhende doesn't hide the fact that she is incredibly attracted to playing a 'boss' character in a position of considerable power.

However, while Miri might initially come off in the pilot episode as a rigid character who cannot be bent on anything, as the show progresses, she is shown to be quite complex in a manner Mhende confesses is attractive to her.

Miri the SOG operative, Miri the daughter, and Miri the housewife are not quite one and the same. In fact, they're so different they could all have been played by entirely different people.

She's a conflicted woman with exposure and power who still feels very insecure in her personal space and relationships.

Her many layers, Mhende says, is true to the reality of women who work hard but never trust that they've done the best.

"I can relate to this woman and her feelings, unsure of herself," Mhende notes of the similarity between her and Miri.

Since Queen Sono's commission was first announced, a lot has been made about how much of a game changer it could be for film making not just in South Africa, but the entire African continent.

Many have lumped on the show's shoulders the tag of pacesetter for a new frontier of African film making, so there's a lot of fingers being crossed on its success or failure, and what either could mean.

For Mhende, there's no doubt that Queen Sono will stick with everyone, in the 190 countries where it is set to stream, because it is, above all, a relatable human story.

The show is a way for others to see Africa in a whole new light, different from the more common damaging lenses through which outsiders have gazed into the continent.

This, she says, was a major motivation for taking part in the project.

"This was an opportunity for me to showcase my talent and skills, and be a part of a project that not only supports, acknowledges, and honours Africa, but is going to be seen by the rest of the world."

Mhende, 28, is proud of the quality of work she put in with the rest of the cast and crew to make Queen Sono what it is, and is excited to share it with the rest of the world.

While she maintains a mostly steely presence as Miri on Queen Sono, behind the scenes, Mhende says she enjoyed being on set with Loyiso Madinga, who plays Fred, another SOG operative.

She said of the stand-up comedian, "I'd never worked with Loyiso Madinga, and to laugh with that man on set is an absolute joy. We cracked up a lot."

Mhende praises Thusi as "not only beautiful in spirit and physically, but has an amazing soul and mind", and very obviously enjoyed sharing the same space with many of the other Queen Sono cast members so much she considers it an honour.

"It was amazing to be directed by someone like Kagiso Lediga (show creator), and to have all these people who took a chance on me and believed in me and allowed me to share space with them," she says.

As Miri, Mhende exudes the poise and sophistication of a woman who's ready to take on the world with as much polish as she exudes the insecurity of a daughter and wife browbeaten into submission by circumstances out of her power.

Compared to her peers on the show, Mhende doesn't have enough to work with here; yet she commands a presence with the little she gets, her most-desired superhero power of invisibility nowhere to be found.

Queen Sono starts streaming worldwide on Netflix on February 28.

Rob Kardashian has been denied primary custody of his daughter, Dream from his baby mama, Blac Chyna

Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:00 PM PST

Rob Kardashian has been denied primary custody of his daughter, Dream from his baby mama, Blac Chyna.

Rob Kardashian's bid to be the primary custodian of his daughter has been hit by a brick wall.

According to The Blast, a judge had denied Rob's request to take full custody of his daughter. EOnline reports that a statement released by Blac Chyna's lawyer indicates that she won't be backing down in her bid to stop Rob and his family from having their way.

"Chyna will not back down from Rob and his family's attempt to take away her agreed-upon custody of Dream. She will continue to take all necessary steps to protect her children, including defeating Rob's and his family's latest attempt to undermine Chyna's joy as a mother to Dream and her ability to make a living as a single mother - without any child support from Rob," the statement reads.

Rob had requested that Chyna's time with their daughter be reduced to weekends, with a nanny present, and that his ex undergo a drug and alcohol test before each visit.

It would be recalled that Rob had filed for primary custody of their daughter back in January 2020 as reported by TMZ. He claims his baby mama is out of control, and people close to the situation can back it up including his sister, Khloe.

Rob also stated in the document that Blac Chyna parties in the house with their daughter present amongst strangers. He also said she's drunk all the time, and a former employee of Chyna's alleges she spends $600 on alcohol almost daily and can down an entire bottle of Hennessy.

Among the other things Blac Chyna is accused of is snorting cocaine, making violent threats to people in her home and getting physical by throwing objects, including knives.

This latest development is coming a few months after Rob and Blac Chyna both for the first time agreed on the child monthly support bills.

Pearl Thusi and Kate Liquorish go to war over Africa in Queen Sono

Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:00 PM PST

The South African duo play characters who end up on opposite ends of the fight for Africa's future on Netflix's first African original series.

Pearl Thusi is no stranger to fame.
The screen goddess has enjoyed a glowing career on the big and small screens in her native South Africa and the United States, and has also thrived as a model, television host, and radio personality.

When Queen Sono debuts on Netflix across the world on February 28, Thusi sits comfortably on the throne as, unarguably, Africa's most famous spy.

Queen Sono is Netflix's first African original series, commissioned in 2018, and stars an ensemble cast of Africans, mostly South Africans.

The show follows Queen's quest to keep South Africa safe, from corruption, terrorism, and neo-colonialism, while also getting to the root of the conspiracy behind her mother's assassination when she was only five.

Thusi's first impression of Queen when she saw the finished script was that the character was going to be a lot more complex than she had initially anticipated.

"I felt like, 'Oh my God, can I really do this?'

"I did put myself under a little bit of stress but once you get on set, the magic happens," she tells Pulse during an interview.

Thusi's character is soft-hearted, disarming, spontaneous, cocky, and uncomfortably crooked in ways that shouldn't be a good mix but works just fine.

There's a brief fight scene in the show's pilot episode, titled 'I Am Queen Sono', where the character engages in hand-to-hand battle with a man in a posh office in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria.

Queen slams a laptop on the head of a bad guy. She gets hit in the face. Then she gets slammed into a wall. She throws back three quick-fire punches, but then she gets thrown into a gun case covered in glass.

Just then, she gains the upper hand with a kick that sends the bad guy to the floor. And just then, the camera pans to Queen's bloodied face, with a rifle raised, and about to finish off the bad guy. She flashes a wicked smile. And then she kills him.

It's unmistakable in the way Queen conducts herself that Thusi is having the time of her life.

"I had a lot of fun," she admits, "there's something very liberating about learning how to use your body in ways that you never thought you really would."

In her personal life, Queen has to deal with the difficulty that comes with leading a double life as she has to keep her professional engagement away from her best friend, William (Khathu Ramabulana), and her grandmother, Mazet, played by the ultra-cool Abigail Kubeka who steals every scene.

As the show builds up to a central conflict, all of Queen's professional battles lead down to one road - Ekaterina Gromova.

Played by the peerless Kate Liquorish, Ekaterina, a Russian neocolonialist, is the embodiment of evil, even though she's confident that she takes tough decisions with the best of intentions for a continent where she doesn't belong, but obsesses over milking for all it's got.

From the moment she makes her first appearance in the show's second episode, titled 'Dying Is Sore', Ekaterina pushes the boundaries of villainy with her every decision and becomes so unpredictably evil it's hard to tell if she has a line she cannot cross.

With her towering frame and stern look, Liquorish has little trouble becoming one with the character; a remarkable feat because the actress will be the first to confess she's nothing like her character.

Unlike Ekaterina, Liquorish is a people-pleaser, doesn't wear as much makeup in real life, she admits, and her hair is curly unlike her character's.

However, the 35-year old is fascinated with Ekaterina's bullish attitude.

"She's driven to the point that she'll do anything to get what she wants, and I think that's unusual for a female character because her drive is brutal, and it gets more and more brutal, and it becomes quite shocking and takes your breath away in a few scenes," Liquorish says during the interview.

The actress confesses that she feels liberated to play Ekaterina, 'to really go dark and deep into that kind of character's mind.'

And to achieve the proper balance and ensure her character didn't fall into the trap of being a caricature villain, Liquorish says she had to work hard to make Ekaterina a full-rounded character with motives that can, at least, be reasonably considered for discussion.

"She's not perfect. She does have moments of vulnerability, and I think that's what makes it interesting," she says.

Despite relishing her role as Ekaterina, Liquorish doesn't speak fondly of the physical and, more especially, mental demands.

Since Ekaterina is Russian in the show, Liquorish says she had to learn the Russian language from scratch. For the show's action set pieces, she also had to train, alongside Thusi, seven hours a day and five days a week for weeks in Cape Town.

To paint a picture of how agonising the process was, the actress admits rather cheerfully that she cried in the bath on the last day of stunt training.

"It was just so cold all the goddamn time. It was freezing. Pearl and I froze our asses off," she tells Pulse.

The result of the mental anguish of physical training undergone by both actresses is a mouth-watering clash between Ekaterina and Queen in the show's third episode, titled 'The Devil's Toys'.

Thusi admits that she cried after shooting the scene because of how intense and how physically and emotionally demanding it was.

If Queen Sono finds favour with viewers across the world, it'll be for how it wraps spy craft, which has been done to the death in Hollywood, around unique African stories so that it feels fresh in focus.

Apartheid, a particularly dark period in South Africa's history, casts a large shadow over the show; and show creator, Kagiso Lediga, also winks at other issues including xenophobia, corrupt African presidents, ageing African presidents, preying Men of God, neocolonialism, power abuse, and sexism.

This is what holds the most fascination for Liquorish who's proud to be involved in a show that offers a more refined look into Africa.

She notes, "It absolutely is a game changer in terms of a story that's told from within Africa looking out, rather than from out of Africa looking inward.

"People are going to see Africa in a new light; in a way that we want them to see it, not in the way they perceive it.

"We have the most amazing stories to tell. They're bright, interesting and eclectic and Kagiso has done such a beautiful, intelligent job of creating a thriller that's both highly entertaining and relevant."

Thusi feels the same way, noting that the show also sheds a light on topics that are almost taboo in South Africa.

"The show approaches topics that South Africans are usually not allowed to talk about or pretend didn't happen, like the dark part of freedom fighting.

"There was a very dark side to it like infighting within the parties or groups fighting for freedom," she says.

Queen spends a lot of time in the show traumatised by her mother's death and has trouble dealing with it even after decades.

Just like her character, Thusi similarly lost her own mother at a young age, and has been vocal about how much that hurts her.

The actress says sharing the same pain with her character was cathartic for her, as she's learnt to channel that hurt in a healthy manner despite mistakes made in the past.

"I've learnt that as an actor you've got to kind of be guided and try and control it. It was cathartic for me to do that and I enjoyed it kind of being an homage to my mother and other people that I've lost," she says.

Thusi and Liquorish sound like lifelong friends during the interview, but Queen and Ekaterina are lifelong enemies who end up on opposite ends of the fight for Africa's future; and the season finale ends on a shocking note that holds a lot of promise for more intrigue to come.

"I think at the end of season one, we realise that this is actually the beginning, not the end, for the characters and the story.

"Like when a comedian sets up a really good joke," Thusi notes.

Describing the project as a 'beautiful process' Liquorish hopes that a second season happens.

If enough of the world basks in the complex African world created by Lediga and his team, that is bound to happen.

Queen Sono starts streaming worldwide on Netflix on February 28, 2020.

Italian man with Coronavirus went to Ogun state before he was brought to Lagos where he was diagnosed – Obafemi Hamzat reveals

Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:30 AM PST

The Deputy governor of Lagos state, Obafemi Hamzat, was on TVC this morning where he revealed that the Italian man diagnosed with the first case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, went to Ewekoro in Ogun state before he fell ill and was brought to Lagos where he was diagnosed with the virus.

This young man came in from Italy, Milan. He came in on the 25th. He has a consultancy job with a company in Ogun state. He landed on the 26th, went to Ewkoro and then he fell ill and the doctors were smart enough to say this is somebody that is coming from Italy that has just suddenly fell ill. So they took him in. So we sent an ambulance there with a pep jacket. So they brought him in and then he was diagonised.

The good thing is that he was brought in yesterday morning. Within four hours, he was diagnosed. Our diagonistic tool seemed to work better than we expected. Normally it takes about 8 hours but within four hours, we were able to determine. So he is our biosecurity lab in Yaba. It is a lab that we built that can accomodate 100 for now but it is only one bed that is occupied today. Hopefully it wouldn't spread. So we are ready. We are well equipped.

He is there and he is getting better. The challenge is not for people to have the virus. If you don't know, that is the challenge. In this case, it is known that he has it. He is going to be okay. He is steady. The doctors say he is going to be fine.

What we are doing now is that he came in through one airline, so we are tring to track everybody on that flight. He went from Lagos to Ewekoro. Who has he met? What has happened? Those are the people that we are tracking, isolate them and then check." he said

In reaction to Ike's post, Dianne Russet took to the comment section to blast him for not calling her. See what she wrote: 'Don't fold and call Diane 🙄🙄🙄 @iam_ikeonyema'

It seems things are really done and over between Mercy Eke and Ike Onyema, considering his aloofness from Mercy's Bestie. It's one man down among the trio who formed a team since the BBN house. Ike the boyfriend, Mercy the Queen and Diane the friend of the Queen. Let's hope the friendship still continues or perhaps, end up a subterfuge.
