Teni Entertainer talks about the difference between her elder sister, Niniola and herself

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:30 PM PST

Teni Entertainer was a guest at Ebuka's Rubbin Mind show where she got to talk about her style and relationship with sister, Niniola.

Teni says her sister and music star, Niniola has always been the pretty one in the family.

The music star made this known while chatting with Ebuka on his show Rubbin Minds. Ebuka asked her if she has always been different from her sister in terms of music and style or it was intentional.

According to her, while growing up, all she wanted to do was play basketball, football, and video games while Niniola was the pretty introverted one.

"It wasn't intentional, I have always been different. Nini has always been the pretty type. Me I have always been the Jaga Jaga...I'll play basketball, come back home, go back and play soccer then come and play games. I am an extrovert and Nini is more like an introvert. Music made her come out more. We are just two different people," she said.

She also went on talk about their relationship and how cordial it has been. According to her, family comes first before music hence the reason they both have no friction.

Ebuka went on to ask the award-winning singer if she feels pressured to look girlie since the assumption around town is that, female singers are supposed to use their music to sell sex.

"I'm human and this is how I have chosen to be. To not expose my skin, to just be comfortable with my shirt and shoes, I like to be comfortable. So the most important thing for me is living me and being happy with what I do. As long as I'm not hurting anybody, I don't care what people have to say.

"But a lot of people are pressured to show their skin because it is to impress the men. But music is not about impressing anyone, music is for the soul, its about the things you cant touch. So my own is to make the music and every other thing will fall in place," she said.

When asked about what her thoughts were on celebrities and the need for a bit of controversy in their lifestyles, Teni said the talent would last longer the controversies.

She gave an instance of legendary singer Bob Marley who she said still reigns to date because and not his controversial moments.

What does a music 'leak' mean?

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:00 PM PST

A 'leak' is an entrenched part of music. To create music is to orchestrate secrecy. Artists prefer it that way because they want to control what their fans listen to and when those fans listen to it. Sometimes, it is also about the readiness of the artist to release music at a particular time that is musically reasonable.

On the business side, music is also big business. It is the quintessential instrument of capitalism. It relies on the human tendency to love music and for the vanity of stan culture to thrive. In essence, big record labels make big bets on the potential attractiveness of an artist and his/her resonance to a particular audience who will be willing to pay for that artist's music.

An Aside: That was the old days. The process of artist discovery has now been abridged by the internet and social media. Before a lot of artists make it big, they might have amassed a huge following via freemium music platforms and social media. Thus, artists now have leverage and labels have slightly lesser work to do to introduce an artist and to generate ideas to market and brand those artists.

For example, Lil Uzi Vert's 'XO Tour Lif3' and Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road,' two of the biggest songs of the past five years were released on SoundCloud.

While the process of introducing music has also been impacted by the internet and social media, one thing has markedly remained the same; the process of making and releasing music. An artist still has to record music, edit it, mix and master before damage control and then release. These things are done in relative secrecy for the business of music and to a much lesser extent, an artist's readiness.

For those reasons, artists hate 'leaks' - at least, most of them used to hate it. A leak is one great impediment to the success of music. That is why Jay Z and Kanye West recorded their collaborative album, Watch The Throne in different hotel rooms across the world with an intimate group of people - they wanted to prevent a leak. They achieved that.

What is a leak?
Ordinarily and historically, a leak is basically anything that was released without the consent of its owner and/or before its release date. A leak doesn't just happen in music either, manufacturers of merchandise and even makers of trivial things now leak product format. Other times, it's about tech, programming or classified information - a la Wikileaks.

In the old days, a 'leak' was a terrible offence on the streets and in Law courts. Technically, it still is but the machine has slowly softened its stance on leakers of material. Meanwhile, a leak didn't just start today. Leaks have been part of music from the days of cassette tapes and vinyls.

In those days, recordings had to be meticulous because things were not as digital. Artists could not just use equipment in hotel rooms. They had to be in the studio where a lot of live instrumentation happened. Even in the 90's when things became more digital, they still had to be mostly recorded in the studio.

For that reason, DJs like Clue, Envy and Whoo Kid became master leakers of unreleased material. In fact, Whoo Kid was so notorious that rappers used to look for him for nefarious reasons. During his stint at Hot 97, New York, he leaked a Notorious B.I.G verse than Diddy hadn't even heard. In an interview, he talked about he got some of the leaks from studio workers.

With a terrible leak of an imminent album, sales can be affected as fans wouldn't want to purchase material they already have for free. Labels are then forced to rework albums to meet deadlines and usually affected the overall output.

Modern day leaks
These days, a leak is not as bad as it once looked. In fact, a leak has become a marketing/promotion tool to test reaction from fans. The idea is to control the marketability of a leak and its ability to impede the success of a product - if reception ends up being good.

In 2018, I had a discussion with Nigerian journalist and former Pulse Music Editor, Ehis Ohunyon. After seeing yet another artist describe their own song as a 'leak,' Ohunyon jokingly asked, "What the heck is a 'leak' these days? How can you release your own song and call it a 'leak'?" We laughed about it until the issue came up just weeks later.

Just a day before this article, Canadian legend, Drake released two new singles, 'Chicago' and 'When To Say When.' He tagged both songs that were released on his label's official Soundcloud page a 'leak.' In the old days, a 'leak' wouldn't have worked for this scenario. In fact, it would have been a funny tag for something an artist releases by himself.

Thus, we can then say the purport of a 'leak' has since evolved to mean, a loosie, residual songs, promotional singles or supposed unfinished versions of certain songs, released officially by artists and labels or through third-party channels. The idea of a modern leak is to either whet the appetite of an audience, test their reaction to a song or build anticipation for a release.

For that reason, leaks now take the following formats;

  1. Leaks as teasers
  2. Leaks as instruments to control an artist's anxiety
  3. Leaks as introduction to a new single
  4. Leaks as teasers
When a leak is a teaser, it is usually to build anticipation for a impending release. In this case, labels or artists release the music through official or third-party channels. When the leak is a teaser, it is usually gets an official release at a later date. Sometimes, it gets a new mix or an extra layer of production. Sometimes, it gets officially released the way it was 'leaked.'

Leaks as instruments to control an artist's anxiety
Creatives get nervous when they feel the attention from the audience drifting away or when they fear the attention might drift away. In this case, 'leaks' are like bastard children in 1672 England. When they do well, they get acknowledged as singles or make it onto albums. When they tank, artists tag them as 'leaks' with no consequence.

'Leaks' are the song version of 'EP.' They are used by artists and labels who are in fear of releasing failed or underwhelming music.

Leaks as introduction
In this case, the song might be to quell an increasingly anxious audience. When this happens, it is usually a promotional single.

Should these be tagged 'leaks'?

When anything is released through an official channel, then they should not be tagged, 'leaks.' Such tags kind of make a mockery of artists. The purpose of a 'leak' is an unauthorized release of music before its release date. Thus, it cannot be a 'leak' when the release is the obvious result of a co-ordinated effort between the label and the artist.

Equally, a surprise release is not a leak. The entire purport of a leak means an artist cannot 'leak' his own song. It's a ridiculous use of words.

Teni speaks on releasing a new album, joining Dr Dolor and having a 'different' 2019

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:30 PM PST

On March 1, 2020, Nigerian singer, Teni appeared on Channels TV. Her appearance was on the Ebuka Obi-Uchendu-hosted show, Rubbin Minds.

When quizzed on her plans for 2020, Teni says, "Album this year." When asked for the date of release, Teni says, "Soon... as soon as I drop the next single." Teni's next single drops very soon.

But before the album, Teni released her first single of 2020, 'Marry.' On that direction, she says, "That song was repeated for my show in the UK. My friend was going to propose to his fiancee. So my team and I asked what can we do to make that moment special? I wrote the song 'Marry' especially for that."

In 2016, Teni joined Dr Dolor Entertainment, the record label owned by businessman, Osadolo Nosa Asemota. Since joining the label, she has gone from a rookie songwriter to a star artist. She has also toured the world - gracing the O2 just a week prior to this interview.

She spoke on joining the label that, "He's just a guy who likes music. I saw hunger, he was ready to push and I just wanted to start with somebody and not go to a place that already had... I wanted somebody that believed in my dreams - most importantly. That's what I did." Teni then called Dolor her "friend" and says that their relationship is excellent.

During the interview, Teni also says that being an independent artist or signed artist to a label should depend on a number of factors. Teni suggests that an artist can seek an investor if he wants funding and could seek a label if he feels he need structure.

When quizzed on why she had a 'different' 2019, Teni says, "I just wanted to make good music. I just wanted to make sure that if I will drop music, it is music that has music and music that will be remembered on years to come and will still have meaning."

‘Who’s The Boss’ is romantic gaping flaws movie

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:30 PM PST

Sharon Ooja as the leading lady in 'Who's the Boss' takes a chunk of the film's misses. Another is its screenwriter, Naz Onuzo and how he lets his uncertainty regarding the story's characterization seep through the film's final cut.

It is almost impossible to point out Naz Onuzo's directing style owing to the fact that 'Who's the Boss' is the accomplished screenwriter and producer's directorial debut.

The very first teaser for 'Who's the Boss' was promising for a number of reasons. For one, the choice of its lead star held promise. However, those lofty dreams are short lived upon seeing the movie. Sharon Ooja is once again forced to embrace a typecast that's lived just as long as her career.

She elicits the help of Lekan ( Blossom Chukwujekwu), a certified playboy who she eventually falls in love with. Then there's Jumoke (Ini Dima-Okojie), a sometimes selfish and sometimes selfless heiress who struggles to find a place in the Lekan and Liah love story.

Onuzo as the film's screenwriter, leaves a lot undone on the characterization of Liah or of any other character asides Lekan. With Liah, it's not clear if she is independent or constantly requiring external validation? Is she spineless and unfashionable or conditionally so?

Beyond characterization, Ooja's character disappointingly wears typecast shoes. Ooja might have featured in over a handful of released movies since Ndani TV web series 'Skinny Girl In Transit', but, she has been unable to display the dexterity required to convince the audience that she can be more than a pretty face.

Make no mistake, fans love Ooja. She is one straight out of a magazine beauty. Lamentably, beneath her flawless features lies an untapped talent held hostage by a beauty that might as well be her curse. It is sad that Filmmakers have let themselves be hypnotized by this curse.

In 'Who's the Boss', the Sharon Ooja curse makes yet another frustrating appearance. Her character appears largely needy and unable to make uninfluenced decisions.

In spite of its unnatural voice-over and echoing room sound flops, 'Who's the Boss' isn't exactly a hot mess. It can serve entertainment on some level. The chemistry between Chukwujekwu and Ooja for instance make it easily relatable .

If given a little more depth, the story had the potential of being totally worth the while.

Ngozi Ezeonu's Ex-Husband Edwin Ezeonu says ‘ Ngozi married off my daughter without my consent after crashing our marriage’

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:12 AM PST

Edwin Ezeonu, the ex-husband of Nollywood actress Ngozi Ezeonu has accused her of marrying off their daughter without his consent.

In an interview with The Sun's 'Inside Nollywood', Edwin accused his ex-wife of trampling on his right and honour as a man.

He described his daughter's traditional wedding in Delta State as an abomination as he was kept in the dark throughout the whole process.

The aggrieved ex-husband of the Nollywood actress said;

"I'm a real son of the soil in Igboland and I am knowledgeable enough about Igbo traditional marriage. In Anambra State where I come from, a woman does not and has no right whatsoever to give out a fellow woman's hand in marriage. It is abomination and taboo. As such, Ngozi Denis Ikpelue has no legitimate right and authority to give out my daughter, Ogechukwu's hand in marriage. As long as I am concerned and also the entire family of Ezeonu and his kindred are concerned, Ogechukwu is not married. What happened in Asaba, Delta State on February 15, 2020 was a movie shoot!"

Recalling how his marriage to Ngozi Ezeonu crashed in 2013, Edwin said;

"I came back home one day from work and met an empty house, without any prior notice. As I got home that fateful day, my landlady told me that Ngozi had packed out of the house, taking the children along with her. Few weeks before that, I had insinuated that she was putting up a new apartment. I summoned her and warned her against dividing the family. But she never listened.

"I gave Ngozi all the supports and encouragements she needed to boost her career as a seasoned actress, yet she never valued all my efforts. She also never contributed a dime to the upkeep of the house and wellbeing of the children. Even after they left, I still catered for my kids: school fees, foodstuff and all. I'm devastated that my only daughter would do this to me. Ngozi should also desist from using my surname. We are divorced."

"Our relationship started after we met at an event. It was love at first sight and it was like magic. I settled for MC fish because you know, sometimes you just see someone and you know in your heart that God has settled this one.

"I was looking forward to it because we were so close; we think alike, behave alike and we love everything about us. When he brought it (the marriage proposal) up, I said why not? It was a beautiful one. Who again I for marry? He's the best person to marry. So, I'd say yes over and over again."

When my partner is not around, Haaaa, I control it o! We talk everyday, every morning, afternoon and night… So, I don't yearn for sex that way. Before he travels, he makes sure he refills my tank. Tboss opens up on Uti Nwachukwu being the father of her baby girl

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:27 AM PST

Controversial ex Big Brother Naija Reality Show star and social media influencer, Tokunbo Idowu, better known as Tboss, has said she'll go to any length to protect her daughter because the baby is her topmost priority.

Speaking on the identity of her baby's father, Tboss declined to comment and also refuted reports that it is Uti Nwachukwu.

"I heard the rumours about me and Uti and we both think they're hilarious. It is not even worth debunking although at some point, it got to me and I have categorically stated that it is untrue. However, some people still think otherwise. Uti is a good but simply platonic friend and that's my truth," she told Punch.

The first-time mother added that she is very sensitive though she tries to ignore throlls calling out her daughter at times.

"A mother's love for her child is unconditional. She can go to any length to keep her baby safe at all times. They say you don't know how high you can jump until you are faced with a situation that requires you to jump. I am a mother and my child is my utmost priority.

"I think the reason people would not only troll me, but anyone at all, is because they lack love. I mean if you grew up in a love-filled environment and were taught the importance of self-love, I cannot imagine that you would act otherwise.

"You cannot give what you don't have. They must be jobless and hurt people for them to going around looking for who to drag down. Many of them are jealous people who hate one because they assume that one has got life all figured out and just want to ruffle one up not knowing that one is simply taking one day at a time.

"And in my case, they know I can sometimes be super sensitive. Trust me, I do look the other way sometimes but I do believe that at some point, one has to give it back to them hot."

Veteran singer, Zaaki Azzay, has alleged that the Nigerian music industry as of today, is driven by investments from drug barons and Internet fraudsters also known as Yahoo Boys.

Zaaki who is famous for his 1996 hit song 'Na Me Go Marry Am', said this in a fresh interview with Premium Times.

When asked to rate new generation singers, the Benue state-born said some Nigerian artistes are talented but lack good content. According to him, "singers who are not really talented, come into the industry with money gotten from drugs or blood money and they just make so much noise."

He alleged that some musicians are using music as coverup for their drug business.

"I think they are very talented and they are good. However, some of them lack good content in their music and have nothing meaningful in their lyrics. Musicians are actually meant to be good ambassadors.

There is a lot that has gone into music. There are lots of people who are not really musicians. People who are not really talented come into music and bring money from drugs or 'blood money' put it into music and make noise everywhere.

Not many know these musicians are actually using music to cover up for their drug businesses. That is the major issue for us because those who are consuming the music might not know that and it kind of makes it difficult for talented musicians who are supposed to be heard and (are) not heard because they cannot afford to promote their music."
