The Embassy of China in France said as he answers questions at how the West was coping with the pandemic, said, western media and governments refusing to give China credit for battling Covid-19 in Wuhan simply envy its efficiency.

Naysayers "envy the efficiency of our political system and hate the inability of their own nations to perform as well. So they try to stick the 'dictatorship' label on China," the embassy argued in a provocative essay published over the weekend, rt.com reports.

These very same detractors instead praise the "Asian democracies" such as South Korea, Japan and Singapore, the article noted, adding that China's quarantine measures were more drastic because it has a much larger population and faced a bigger challenge in fighting the coronavirus.

Lagos Lockdown: Yul Edochie tells President Buhari to give Nigerians N50k each

Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:30 AM PDT

The Nigerian government has directed citizens to stay at home in order to contain the spread of coronavirus. Some states like Lagos, Ogun and even the Federal Capital Territory have been asked to ban all movement as COVID-19 continues to spread with an increase in the number of cases.

Due to this lockdown, many Nigerians who make their livelihood by going out each day would find it hard to survive during this time, but to contain and hopefully eradicate the virus, drastic measures have to be taken.

In a bid to make life easier for people, popular Nigerian actor turned politician Yul Edochie has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to provide relief funds for Nigerians during this difficult time.

The actor asked the president to provide N50,000 each for Nigerians. He said the money would go a long way.

According to him, people are hungry and they are in lockdown with no money. He said many are begging others for money. Edochie said with a situation like this it will be difficult to keep people at home.

Mike Adenuga Foundation, donates N1.5b to fight Coronavirus in Nigeria

Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:30 AM PDT

The Mike Adenuga Foundation (MAF), established by business mogul, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., has donated the sum of N1.5 billion to government to support Nigeria's fight against the global Coronavirus pandemic, otherwise known as COVID-19.

The money is made up of N1billion to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which is coordinating efforts to raise funds from corporate bodies to support the initiatives aimed at combating the COVID-19 in Nigeria, and N500 million to the Lagos State Government, which has recorded the majority of the cases of the pandemic.

Mrs. Bella Disu, Executive Vice Chairman of Globacom, presented the N500 million cheque to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in Lagos today, Monday, while a representative of the Foundation presented the cheque for N1 billion to the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele in Abuja.

In addition to the financial contributions, the Foundation said it would continue its on-going efforts to assist various bodies and institutions in the country with the supply of such essential items as Sanitizers, Masks, Test Kits, Personal Prospective Equipment (PPEs), Respirators and other necessary requirements to combat the pandemic.

As part of its own response to ensure the safety of Nigerians while the pandemic lasts, the Mike Adenuga Foundation advised all to take measures to ensure their safety in line with the guidelines provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). These include regular hand washing and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, limiting non-essential travel and ensuring timely medical checkups.

Lagos State has Released 5 COVID-19 Survivors

Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PDT

We've got some good news from Lagos State – five COVID-19 survivors have been discharged from the isolation centre in the state.

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu shared the news on Instagram and it has got people full of hope.

The statement reads:

QWith so much joy and pleasure in my heart, I hereby inform you dear Lagosians that we have discharged five people from the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) today.

They have survived the COVID-19 disease and have been given a clean bill of health.

The survivors are four males and one female, bringing the total number of survivors from the center to eight.

These our survivors who were quarantined and treated at the isolation centre for two weeks after testing positive for the coronavirus have expressed their deep gratitude to all the health workers who took great care of them while they were in the facility.

This is a testament to the fact that testing positive for coronavirus is not a death sentence, but that is not to say that we should not adhere to the strict guidelines on prevention of the disease.

We are doing all we can within our powers to curtail the spread of the virus so that life could return to normal, and we would not rest until we have achieved zero transmission.

Lagos state Government will continue to work effectively, efficiently and diligently to protect the health and lives of its citizens.

This is a feat we would not have achieved without the support of the Federal Government, Private sector, well meaning Nigerians and the general public.

And for this I say, Thank You all and God bless.

Coronavirus pandemic: Police alerts Nigerians on new crime trends deviced by Internet fraudsters

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:30 PM PDT

The Nigeria Police Force has alerted Nigerians on the new crime trends fraudsters have deviced to defraud people during this Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released, the police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said intelligence at the disposal of the Force indicates that fraud and cybercrime are expected to rise at this time owing to the lockdown emplaced by Government at all levels to contain the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Mba said intelligence obtained from the INTERPOL Headquarters shows that scammers in Nigeria and other parts of the globe have begun to create and set up fraudulent websites, e-commerce platforms, fake social media accounts and emails claiming to sell and deliver (covid-19) medical products. He noted that in some cases, the fraudsters use the names of prominent companies involved in the production and distribution of these items. Victims are then asked to pay via bank transfer.

According to Mbah, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu, has enjoined all Nigerians to strictly adhere to the following security tips:

i. Avoid opening suspicious emails and clicking on links in unrecognized emails and attachments;
ii. Ensure proper back-up of online and offline files regularly and securely;
iii. Use strong passwords for securing your emails and social media handles;
iv. Keep your software updated, including antivirus software;
v. Manage your social media settings and review your privacy and security settings;
vi. You are advised to be wary of scammers who use names of prominent companies to create fraudulent websites, e-commerce platforms, social media accounts and emails claiming to sell and deliver medical products;
vii. You are advised to ignore and report calls purportedly emanating from a caller who pretends to be a relative currently being treated at hospital asking you to pay for the cost of the medical treatment by transferring money or by paying cash to fake public health representatives;

viii. Do not open letters or emails related to the pandemic from unknown persons who claim to be health authorities. Often times criminals access sensitive information,steal personal information and steal funds of victims by tricking them into connecting to a specific webpage and logging-in with their credentials;
ix. Be mindful of fake news, deliberate misinformation/disinformation and avoid circulating untrusted and unverified messages on your social media handles;
x. Educate your family, especially your children, about how to stay safe online and offline;
xi. If you become a victim, ensure prompt report to the police.

The statement added that the IGP has placed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja – Nigeria on red alert.

"The NCB which houses the cybercrime unit of the Force shall in the coming days and beyond work closely with other Interpol member states across the globe particularly to carry out intense monitoring of the internet highway in the most legitimate and ethical manner. This is to engender concerted efforts in cracking down on any individual or all forms of organized criminal gangs that may want to take advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to perpetrate crimes.

The Force also enjoins commercial bank operators to strengthen their online banking security systems and report promptly any suspected case of fraud and other cybercrime related activities in their banks.

While reaffirming the determination of the Nigeria Police Force in providing support services to relevant agencies saddled with the task of curtailing and containing the COVID-19 pandemic, the IGP assures the public that the Force is unrelenting in clamping down on criminals who may want to take advantage of the situation to perpetrate criminal acts" the statement read

TV Host, Tobi Akingbade shares her horrific symptoms after surviving a coronavirus infection

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 10:30 PM PDT

UK-based Nigerian TV Host, Tobi Akingbade has shared her horrific symptoms after surviving a coronavirus infection.

According to Tobi, a medical test she underwent for the virus turned out positive after being in contact with a confirmed case.

She further revealed that she had a swollen gland, persistent cough, fever and always felt tired thereafter.

Read her tweets below;

I survived coronavirus. Spent nearly 2 weeks indoors + in quarantine as my body fought it off. Yesterday, I took my first steps downstairs, headed straight to my garden + took a deep breath Wasn't gonna share this online but I've been encouraged to share hope & good news 1/18

Because a lot of us may not get access to Covid-19 testing kits and calls with NHS 111 feel scripted, I'll share my experience. It may help someone. These were my symptoms… 2/18

Day 1: I'd been informed that I was in contact with someone who had been in contact with someone with covid-19. Nothing serious I told myself, but I decided to social distance anyway. Later I found out I'd been in direct contact with a confirmed case 5 days before. 3/18

Day 2: I develop a very dry cough. And a swollen gland I developed 2 days before Day 1 became very prominent. The cough was persistent making speaking for longer than 40 secs hard. I was extremely fatigued. I'm anaemic and well acquainted with tiredness but this was chronic 4/18

Day 3: A good night sleep did not help. My chest was painfully tight, at first I blamed work anxiety. I developed a fever (was hot + cold at the same time). I struggled to walk and my breathing became shallow + difficult. The muscles in my neck began to ache. 5/18

Day 4: The scariest day. Woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a truck in my sleep and then thrown of a cliff. The muscles in my face ached. The muscles in eyes hurt. Every muscle hurt. My persistent cough became extremely painful. Developed a painful migraine. 6/18

Day 4: Still with a fever and cough. On this day I became frightful of how my body would force itself to sleep. My breathing was worrying and I feared the worst. I called NHS 111 who confirmed my suspicions and instructed me to self-isolate in my room as I don't live alone. 7/18

Day 5: I slept a lot. Keeping my eyes open was painful and a core. Wore sunglasses to use my phone. The sunlight made my migraine worst. My body ached and my breathing became worst. Coughing didn't help. I could feel my lungs getting heavier, every breath got shorter. 8/18

Day 6: Painkillers did not stop the pain. Also stockpiling trends meant even my pharmacist could not help. Was scared to sleep as my breathing was not improving. Could not hold my breath for more than 2 secs. 9/18

Day 7: I became alarmed when I noticed I lost the ability to taste food. Nearly passed out brushing my teeth as it was obstructing my breathing. NHS were too overstretched to help. At this point I was begging God, I didn't want to die this way 10/18

Day 8: Twitter said that running a humid shower would help breathing. It did for me. I drew my curtains for the 1st time, still needed sunglasses. Body aches stopped. Migraine not so persistent. Coughed less but it was a nauseous and brought up yellowy phlemg from my lungs 11/18

Day 8: Still breathless from just sitting up, sharp pains in my chest but migraine improved. Body temperature back to normal. Coughed about twice a day. Found the strength to find hope. 12/18

Day 9-12: Saw improvements slowly. Was able to hold my breath for 8 secs now. Slept less, was able to WFH at times. Called NHS again due to a scare with breathing, unable to get medical assistance but the problem solved itself. Became physically restless on Day 11 13/18

Day 13: Walked down the stairs for the first time. Thanked God and walked around my garden. Wasn't sure I'd remember what fresh air would feel like. 14/18

I know the staff at NHS did everything they could for me with the limited resources they had. On a normal day, I would have been accepted into A&E. It was touch and go. Also, I was not tested. 15/18

I've lost several days of my life to this illness. Many others have lost their lives. You can do your part by staying at home, stop joking around & take it seriously. I'm a healthy 28 year old & it hit me hard. I'm grateful to have recovered but I will continue to do my part. 16

Rashford helps feed children during virus shutdown

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:53 AM PDT

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is working to get food to children who rely on free school meals after the coronavirus shutdown.

The 22-year-old England international has teamed up with charity FareShare to help children in the Manchester area after schools were closed.

And he revealed that his own childhood had inspired him to want to make a difference to the next generation.

"In the past I have done a lot of work in regards to children and when I heard about the schools shutting down, I knew that meant free meals for some kids that they are not getting at school," Rashford told the BBC.

"I remember when I was at school I was on free meals and my mum wouldn't get home until around six o'clock so my next meal would have been about 8 o'clock. I was fortunate, and there are kids in much more difficult situations that don't get their meals at homes."

Rashford said fundraising had gone well.

"We have got to the £100,000 ($124,000) mark, which means we get to feed 400,000 children so it's been very positive."

Manchester United and Manchester City have joined forces to donate to food banks in the area.

"I think when times are tough it is important that two clubs who have a huge social following that we do come together and make a difference when things which are bigger than football happen. So credit to both clubs," Rashford said.

Rashford was sidelined with a back injury when the Premier League season was suspended earlier this month.

The forward said he was making good progress but admitted he was missing football.

"It's just about patience," he said. "I have been working hard on the bikes and following the programme that I have been given from the club.

"I have been playing FIFA, reading different types of books. It is important to keep time passing, with positive vibes and just keep smiling."

The lockdown of covid-19 causes global emissions to fall

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:47 AM PDT

In a nutshell: The coronavirus outbreak isn't just affecting people's lives, it's also having an impact on the planet—a positive one. As factories close and fewer people use their cars, levels of air pollution and CO2 have been falling in regions across the world.

The effect was first detected by NASA and the European Space Agency, which released satellite images showing a significant reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions (NO2) in Chinese cities between January and February. NO2 is released by cars, factories, and power plants, and remains close to where it is emitted.

The European Space Agency's Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite showed northern Italy has also seen reductions in nitrogen dioxide emissions since lockdowns in the region were put in place.

Researchers told the BBC that New York has seen carbon monoxide emissions, which come mainly from cars, reduced by nearly 50 percent compared to last year. Traffic levels are estimated to be down by 35 percent, and there has been a 5 – 10 percent drop in CO2 over the city. Methane emissions are also down.

Even Los Angeles, a city known for its pollution and smog, has seen a drastic improvement in air quality as people stay at home.

With the aviation industry stopping flights, it's predicted that countries around the world will experience a fall in emissions. "I expect we will have the smallest increase in May to May peak CO2 that we've had in the northern hemisphere since 2009, or even before," said Prof Róisín Commane, from Columbia University, who carried out the New York air monitoring work.

One caveat to the findings is that carbon emissions are expected to increase once the coronavirus situation improves. Following the global financial crash in 2008-2009, emissions shot up by 5 percent as fossil fuel use jumped.

“The day my husband asks me to pay rent is the day I pack my bags”- Lady writes

A lady on Twitter, who supposedly resides in London took to the platform to declare what would happen in the advent of a particular situation in her marital home in the future.

@PodierEden on the platform unapologetically tweeted that the day her husband asks her to pay half of their rent money is that day she packs her bags to leave him.

When her tweet sparked a debate, she went on to say that she believes it is a man's job to provide for his household financially and also the roles that she's going to play in the house too, levels up to the responsibility of the man.

Her statements has caused a stir on social media with some agreeing with her and some not. She however is not perturbed by comments trailing her notion as she says despite a man in her life, she would still be able to provide for her desired lifestyle and more. However, her man should be able to do more than she can do for herself.

Read what she wrote below,

"The day my husband asks me to pay halves on rent is the day I pack my bags.

Ngl I believe it's a mans job to provide for his household financially. Plus the roles I'm gonna take on as a wife and mother ; physically , mentally and emotionally is going to level/most likely overweigh his financial burden . I will not be adding my money on top of that 😭

I'm a hard working prayerful person with a lot of faith . I believe I'm going to make something of myself and be able to provide solely for the lifestyle I desire and more. Therefore any man that God brings to me should be able to do more than what I can for myself period"
