‘Netflix Naija’ and how prejudiced filmmakers can get a slice of the American pie

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 11:00 PM PST

The biggest profiters from the Netflix Naija deal might be its recently unveiled cabal but the big picture might benefit a different group.

Now that the first dust heralding Netflix's arrival in the Nollywood space has cleared, Industry influencers and observers are beginning to open their eyes to the implications of having the US streaming service giant in our space.

Without a doubt, the coming years will prove that the disadvantages might measure just as much in intensity as its current tempting offer of bliss. But, an unignorable fact is that Netflix Naija poses opportunities for ostracised Nollywood creatives.

For years, Nollywood observers have urged distribution companies to become creative and share new ideas on how to create and embrace a market for non-comedy and non-romantic comedy films. Filmmakers who can't seem to thrive in the already monopolised market now have Netflix.

Eventually, Netflix will progress from original series to original feature films and for filmmakers not in the class of the winning sect, Netflix's salvation is welcome.

Unromantically speaking, filmmakers in this group might not be $500,000 richer for their content especially with the Ebonys and Filmones already in the decision making position. But, there's a chance to get their content to people actually willing to see the potential and do the job the Sandaros way.

The future is also utopic for filmmakers who have struggled with the National Film Video and Censors Board and their toplofticality and hypocrisy.

The Censors board can finally go on vacation with its stringent regulations that have become a fat bone stuck in the throats of filmmakers.

Filmmakers might never publicly admit that the Board's double standard censorship style is killing creativity and free expression but it is. A good number of filmmakers have shared off-record that the Board invents ridiculous reasons to have scenes removed from a film or blatantly refuse to approve a film.

A close study of Netflix's original content proves that the streaming platform is anything but sensitive to provocative material. In fact, the more provocative, the more potentially attractive it is to the US streaming platform and they need not worry about Nigerians watching because we will.

Unfortunately, Netflix in Naija could mean an eventual nosedive in the cinema culture that's still struggling to break even with its Nollywood audience count. In 2019, Nollywood recorded an average of 20,000 people watching its content as opposed to the 70,000 watching Hollywood films both in their peak periods. With the 'less expense but more income' offer that Netflix might soon offer, filmmakers would ultimately hop on the new wagon of film distribution that will once again annihilate cinema.

Finally, Netflix Naija is primarily a money-making venture for the US company. It's important that filmmakers keep this important fact close to heart as they gobble Jacob's porridge.

Rema recalls how tough things became for him after he lost his father and elder brother

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 02:00 AM PST

Divine Ikubor, the Mavin Records-signed Nigerian singer who is better known as Rema, has recalled how things became tough for him after he lost his father and elder brother.

The talented singer gave the narration during a chat with Manny Norte on Capital Xtra, where he spoke mainly on his background and foray into music.

According to the 'Bad Commando' crooner, the loss of his dad and his brother brought an untold pressure on him to cater for his mother.

He added that he had to summon courage to brace the odds by taking up different jobs, including working at a beach in Ghana just to raise money

Rema said that such tumultuous experiences in the past have significantly shaped his music career while also inspiring him to do more.

He attributed his success to his mother's support, adding that such has kept him moving. He also said such support informed his decision to buy her an SUV while he was just 17 out of his savings.

"At some points, things got tough I had to man up. My past life has the same effect on my present being in the music and taking things forward," he said.

"I had to work hard because I lost my father and my brother and things were left only to me. So, I had to put things in place. I did a lots of job like working at a beach in Ghana.

"Hard work got me my this shape. At first, it was really hard for me, I cried and was really sad. When I got back to Nigeria I had to appreciate my mum for being strong so I had to get her a car.

"I was tired of seeing her trekking everyday. She didn't even have money to use a public transport or motorcycle. Even though I had no car of my own then, I had to buy my mum a car."

On his foray into music, Rema said he took to studio upon his return to Nigeria, where he spent most of his time and savings.

He recalled it was during the time that he met Ozedikus, a producer, in August 2018, who vented his frustration on making 'Dumebi' — which later turned out to be a hit song.

The gifted singer went on to relish the impact he has had on the Nigerian music industry in less than a year, stressing such was indicative of his exploits to come.

"That why I always tell people, never say never. When my sweet last marriage crumbled, I made a decision that I wasn't going to have anything with any actor. But as God may have it, two years later.
But it has always been my dream to marry an actor.

"I had told God that I want to marry wherever I am working. Because I am this kind of person that play a lot. I am a very playful person and sometimes, some people don't really understand me. So, I want to get married to a man who's in same field with me, so I don't have to keep explaining myself to my husband all the time.

There is this my friend, who happens to be his family friend, so whenever he comes to see him, I do ask him why he is so reserved. He would just accept you for who you are. He is that kind of guy. The kind of guy that accepts everyone, won't try to change you or make you feel less who you are."

She continued, "Then whenever I am at Abeokuta, I used to call him or one other guy, my colleague too. I ask either of them to get me an apartment or hotel where I would stay because most times. I don't stay where the crew are. So, our love started from there. It is just a mutual thing."
