Stella Damasus' comeback feature film 'Between' is a watered down romance with consequences

Posted: 11 Apr 2020 11:00 PM PDT

In 'Between', Adenimokan's hamartia is his inability to separate character from actor and for this, the movie suffers greatly.

Daniel Ademinokan's 'Between' is a fairly good film. What it lacks in actual romance, it tries to make up for with beautiful aerial angle shots and consoling soundtrack.

If you are patient enough, Damasus' performance, as well as the movie's narrative of hope and restoration and its very nonromantic resolution, might actually make you smile. But, it takes more than a promising story and good acting to kick off a Hollywood styled romantic film.

At this point, it's imperative to warn you that the movie currently streaming on YouTube is over two hours long. It tells the tale of a 35-year-old woman who turns to religion after 4 failed marriages and a disastrous breakup.

The opening scenes introduce Chelsea (Stella Damasus) as a double-dealing character- a divorced freak by night and a marriage counsellor by day.

Unfortunately, the film writer's attempt to make the Chelsea character less stilted crumbles shortly before the movie hits its climax.

The catastrophe of actors who double as filmmakers not being able to detach themselves completely from the characters that they create is Nollywood's incoming plague. In EbonyLife Film's 'Your Excellency', first time director, Funke Akindele towed this path. This form of ridiculous narcissism is the reason Ademinokan turned an almost beautiful love story into one filled with religious shenanigans.

In 'Between', Chelsea spews Damasus' views on immigrant language, gender rights and religion. Having bits and pieces of Stella Damasus pop out of Chelsea's mouth gave rise for more eye-rolling moments than applause.

If Nollywood was the measuring tape for the acting skill of Caucasians, I'd maintain that those folks are horrible actors. In 'Between', they become yet another elephant in the room. Each time Damasus tried to take her range a notch higher, her stiff-necked supporting actors were available to drag her back to ground zero

An overview of 'Between' brings me to the verdict that asides the movie's embarrassing lighting, its flaws are forgivable. Also, the entire story should have been captured in an hour and thirty minutes and not two hours.

COVID-19: The lockdown will last as long as our Advisers say

COVID-19: The lockdown will last as long as our Advisers say
Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has admonished Nigerians to stay at home, stating that restriction of movement in some states and Federal Capital Territory(FCT) will remain as long as Advisers say.

On the 29th of March, 2020, the President Buhari had ordered a lockdown of FCT, Lagos and Ogun so as to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Garba Shehu, Presidential spokesman, in a statement on Saturday, said, President Buhari has stated that his government had implemented multiple measures to assist Nigerians during the lockdown.

He said, "We realise that today there will be sons and daughters unable to visit their parents, and elders that are isolated from young ones. And there will be those who live day-to-day, eating as they earn, who face real and present suffering.

"No elected government could ask more of the citizens of the country that elected them than today we ask of you. But we must ask you - once more - to observe restrictions on movement where they are in place, and follow the instructions of our scientists and medical advisers: stay home, wash your hands, save lives.

"The freedoms we ask you to willingly forsake today will only last as long as our scientific advisers declare they are necessary. But they are essential - world over - to halt and defeat the spread of this virus.

"For those who suffer most egregiously, the government has announced multiple measures to assist: 70,000 tonnes of grain is being released from the National Strategic Grain Reserves for distribution to those in most need; distribution of small cash payments are also being made, and will continue to be made by the Federal Government in the states and local government areas.

"We ask you to listen and follow public announcements via the mass media for instructions as to how to receive this government support - and learn of more public assistance in the coming days.

"All that the Government is asking you to endure is because nowhere in the world today is there any known way of defeating this pandemic. There is no vaccine. And that means there are choices to be made: between continuing as usual, or accepting the restrictions even when they come with unintended consequences.

"But at this darkest hour, it remains our duty to offer you the full and unvarnished truth: This is a global pandemic, 210 countries and territories across the globe are affected. We cannot expect others to come to our assistance. No one is coming to defeat this virus for us.

"Instead, the defeat of the virus in our country will be in our hands, alone. We cannot wait for others. We can only depend on ourselves now. And so we must - and we will - end this outbreak ourselves as Nigerians, together."

Top Mobile Payment Risks and How You Can Stay Safe

Posted: 11 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Technology has made payment methods very convenient. The most popular payment method right now is mobile payment. Mobile wallets such as Chase Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay are cutting down on the concept of carrying around a wallet in favor of a smartphone. However, with all the goodness that this payment method brings comes the question, are mobile payments methods secure?

According to experts, there is a high percentage of mobile payment fraud, and this percentage is bound to increase in the coming years. Not to fret though as there are ways to deal with this issue. In fact, some people argue that mobile payment methods are more secure than cash or physical credit card as long as you put some security measures in place. Let's look at the risks associated with this payment method and how to stay safe.

Cybercriminals can "spoof" your mobile wallet

While the probability of cybercriminals stealing your account number is minimal because it is securely stored via encryption, the risks are made higher when you add a card to your wallet while on an unsecured public Wi-Fi. Hackers who hide on such networks can "spoof" or recreate the system for mobile wallet registration for which you'll be required to input your card details.

To solve this problem, load card details into your mobile wallet using a secure, password-protected Wi-Fi network, preferably on at home. And, if you really have to use public Wi-Fi, then do so through a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Losing your phone

Today, your smartphone is like your credit card; it is where you store important details like names, contact information, social media accounts, and personal photographs, etc. Also, your phone offers full access to credit cards, debit cards, and bank accounts, through various online banking apps, payment apps, mobile wallets, and much more. So, what happens when you lose your phone? Well, your personal details are most-likely to get leaked, after all the chances of your phone falling into the hands of a Good Samaritan who might return it are very slim.

So, what's the solution? Look for a smartphone that contains built-in protection to prevent unauthorized persons from accessing your phone. Also, activate two-factor authentication on your phone, which is ideally a PIN incorporated with a biometric method like facial recognition, an iris scan, or your fingerprint.

Malware attack

Today, malware attack is not just limited to computers as mobile malware also continues to grow. One such malware is called Fakedtoken, which is capable of attacking banking and other applications that propel Android phone users to input payment card details.

To deal with this issue, ensure you don't click on suspicious links on your phone. Also, install an antivirus and keep all your apps updated as outdated apps are not well-protected against attacks.

Using multiple software

Just like desktops and laptops, mobile phones also work on various software and hardware programs. There are people who are still using old models of Android and iOS, and this can cause various security issues since these devices lack the newest mobile security technologies. This attracts fraudsters and hackers for exploiting and attacking.

Your mobile phone needs to be secure, with advanced components to protect you from any form of fraud. A secure mobile device should include face scanners, voice recognition, geofencing, fingerprint scanner, and verification codes to your emails or mobiles. Therefore, look for a smartphone that has advanced features in regard to the hardware and software to allow full protection of your accounts and payments.

There is no doubt that mobile payments, just like all other payment methods have some risks. This payment method is however still much safer than the plastic cards you have to carry around. You just need to be a little careful when using it. Do your research, use strong passwords, use your own secure network, educate your family on safe mobile payment processes, avoid making payments using public Wi-Fi networks, and secure your financial information with a VPN.

Rema “I really want to be in a relationship but still looking for the right one”

Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:00 AM PDT

Divine Ikubor, Mavin Record's teenage singer, says he really wants to be in a relationship but hasn't met the right person.

The 19-year-old trap musician was speaking to City People Magazine about how he has been coping with all the frenzy activities typical for artistes who make it to limelight at tender age.

Admitting that camera flashlights, meetings, and studio sessions could be confusing, the singer explained that he only has his mother and sister as trustworthy persons with whom he shares secrets.

"I really want to be in a relationship but still looking for the right one. I want to enjoy the peace because it's really noisy: cameras flashing lights, meetings, studio sections," he said.

"This whole music stuff is beyond ordinary for me that's why things are happening differently for me and I am very spiritual from my angle and I don't do my things the same way as everybody.

"Home is actually my peace. I find peace either in church or home. My own personal space, but yeah! It will be nice to find someone I can share it with, but then, I have not found the right one."

Speaking on his early days in the industry and how past experiences prompted him to take up music at 11, Rema said he worked sleepless nights that God had no opinion but to bless him.

He said he started considering music as far back as when he was seven but only decided to take it for a profession four years after his politician-cum-publisher father had died.

"I worked really hard for it, having sleepless nights, prayed, gave my seeds, tithes and left the rest for the lord which gave him no other option to bless me," Rema explained.

"It is actually spiritual how I found myself in the midst of Don Jazzy and everybody in a blink of an eye, everything worked very fast for me. Everything that came to me, I deserve it.

"I'm not the kind of guy to post on Instagram. The only thing people see about me is my music and my studio sessions but a lot is happening behind the screen, a lot of tears, sweat and blood.

"People tend to believe that we over hype, but it's not over hyping because it's really happening while some people where sleeping, I was on the road every single night."

Just recently, Nigerian comedian, AY Makun, got on the wrong side of some people on Twitter and they continued to drag him. It started when AY commented on actress, Funke Akindele's run in with the law.

A Twitter user identified as Sage then said the oppressors in the government are the ones who spend money at his shows and that he never calls them out. Sage continued by saying AY tells only dry jokes.
