Wole Soyinka – I Was Disappointed By Chinua Achebe’s Comment On My Nobel Prize

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Prof Wole Soyinka, the Nobel laureate, has said he was disappointed by a comment made by the late renowned novelist, Prof Chinua Achebe, shortly after he (Soyinka) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986.

In a conversation with an American-based Nigerian novelist, Okey Ndibe, which was aired on Channels Television's Book Club, Soyinka said he considered the particular remark by Achebe uncalled for and disappointing.

Ndibe had, during the conversation with Soyinka, recalled how Achebe, at one time, said, "The Nobel Prize did not make one the Asiwaju of African Literature."

He then asked Soyinka how he took that statement at the time.

Responding, Soyinka said, "The subject was not even literature when he (Achebe) made that statement and so I was disappointed that he created a nexus between my normal sociopolitical life and my normal way of articulating an opinion.

"It was almost like because I won the Nobel Prize, I have no right to offer, to do what I used to do before all my life. I responded to it, even though I wanted to make light of it. I was a little bit disappointed and I didn't see the necessity; that particular subject, which was under contention, didn't relate to literature. So, it was like, oh, am I now to carry this burden for the rest of my life? That people will think I am doing what I used to do before simply because I now have a Nobel Prize."

Asked what he felt about how literary enthusiasts often segregate themselves into either Soyinka camp or Achebe camp, Soyinka said it boiled down to "ignorance".

"Everybody feels they have a right to pronounce authoritatively, not only on the products but on the producers of the products and their positions in society," he said.

The playwright said he would never speak about the works of other professionals, such as architects, musicians, doctors, lawyers. etc, the way people "pontificate on literature."

Earlier, when asked what his experience had been after winning the Nobel prize, Soyinka said, "It has bred demands, expectations; it has bred even envy in some areas – one can cope with that – antagonism where totally unnecessary, uncalled for. But that's part of human life; any kind of achievement does that."

Ubi Franklin Reveals What Happened To Him When He Visited A Hospital Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:00 PM PDT

Music executive, Ubi Franklin has shared his experience of visiting the hospital amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, he decided to visit the hospital after the food he ate left him stooling and weak. He was however told to wait outside until his result was out.

Ubi Franklin who said he had to go back home, added in this period everyone is a suspect not minding what your illness is.

He tweeted; Yesterday I had, Breakfast – Cereal with sugar and milk

Lunch – Nice Affang

Dinner – Porridge beans and yam.

They clashed and I have used the toiled from yesterday for more than 40 Times. This afternoon I became so weak and decided to be driven to the hospital and when I got there I was kept outside the gate of the hospital for my vitals, and I became more weak and restless, you can imagine the sun and the doctor came outside to tell me I'll wait for my test results to come while waiting outside.

I couldn't sit down because my ass was aching from the many Times I have had to visit the toilet. I decided to leave and go home and not even bother about going back to the hospital. In this trying Covid-19 period everyone is a suspect not minding what your illness is that's totally different from sythoms of Covid-19.

I am home hoping I get better. I cried because this is currently going on in different parts of Nigeria, hospitals are rejecting patients who clearly don't have COVID-19. Before this entire world pandemic you can walk into the hospital and get a bed, your Vitals taken and test comes out and treatment begins, but now it's a different story . Everyone is treated like a COVID patient. I have taken Imodium hoping it works.

I'll just stay home trusting my stomach behaves after much stooling from last night till this moment, this moment I mean I am typing from the toilet.

BBNaija2020: Everything you probably missed at the 1st Saturday night party

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT

Saturday nights are no joke in Big Brother's house and for the first Saturday night party, the Lockdown housemates were fixed to turn up to Sarz on the wheels of steel and a special appearance by Omah Lay.

A technical glitch nearly ruined the vibe of the night.

However, the party kicked off slowly with housemates proving to be more smitten with having their photos taken than getting any real moves in. Here is everything that went down at the official opening Saturday night party.

The show was marred by a technical glitch

Weird playlist, off mix sounds and persistent pauses forced the already gingered housemates to opt for the chairs at intervals. Sarz, who was billed to be on the wheels, took to Twitter shortly after to announce that he wasn't deejaying due to a technical glitch.
That, thankfully, explained the inconsistencies.

Kiddwaya and Tolanibaj supposedly shared a kiss

While it is unclear if the pair shared a kiss or a behind Tolanibaj's wig moment, fans think their moment might be the start of a new situationship, one that might be at the detriment of Erica who has been getting comfortable around Kiddwaya.

Omah Lay was MIA
The singer who was billed to perform live at the show was also conspicuously absent probably due to the technical errors.

Tolanibaj, Erica and Ka3na proved themselves as the indisputable dance queens

Thankfully, housemates Tolanibaj, Erica and Ka3na, did not let the glitch get in the way of their fun night. The housemates took over the dance floor with major dance moves

Wathoni was more interested in the mirror than the party

Either Wathoni had a lot on her mind or she wasn't feeling the party. The housemate had eyes largely for the mirrors and seemed to be a loner for the most part of the night except for a few minutes of joining other housemates with little to no moves.

Erica and Nengi had a candid talk about their relationship
Right after the party, Erica and Nengi, the self-acclaimed hottest girls in the house spoke about their relationship in the house and feeling distanced from each other. They both hugged and clarified that they were cool and were in no silent competition.

Erica also cleared the air on her initial ship with Eric and interestingly, she revealed that she never had any intention to date him. The pair agreed to communicate in future if they ever felt uncool.

Finally! Our first BBNaija Lockdown kiss is between Kiddwaya and Wathoni

Certainly the most unanticipated duo. Right after the party, the housemates tried to fix a game of truth and dare that fell through. The first participants, Kiddwaya and Wathoni shared a 20-second kiss to the excitement of the housemates.

Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:30 AM PDT

Controversial Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has returned to her page on Instagram hours after she addressed young ladies who are fond of seeking alternative ways to rip wealthy men off their money.

The actress in a lengthy post shared on her page disclosed that vendors who sell kanyamata have flooded her page on the social media platform.

Dikeh, however, made it clear that her initial post was never to ruin their business. According to her, one of the top vendors of the product is her close friend and she respects her work ethic a lot.

Although Dikeh added that even though she respects her friend who sells the product, she does not believe in the efficacy.

First of all, your Oga madam is my friend. I love her and trust me I love her work ethics and her hardworking nature. Do I believe in what she sells NO. Do I believe in what any of you sells NO," her post read in part.

The controversial actress explained that while she believes in the potency of traditional herbs that act as aphrodisiacs, she refuses to believe that kanyamanta has the ability to do every other thing the vendors say about it.

In a different portion of her post, Dikeh explained that she has heard of kanyamata vendors who rent dollar notes from bureau de change operators all in a bid to influence ladies to buy their products.

According to her, the move is a genius one for aggressive publicity. She, however, added that some young ladies are not aware of the marketing strategy and end up falling for the products.

Concluding her post, the movie star submitted that she respects those who are into the business but must also educate young ladies who are getting lazy.
