Moyo Lawal – Why I haven’t made millions in Nollywood

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Nollywood actress, Moyo Lawal, has stated that she would be at least a million dollars richer if the Nigerian film industry had better structures in place.

The Tinsel-star said this on Sunday when she shared a picture of herself making what looks like 'amala' on Instagram.

"It just reoccurred to me that, I have been working my ass off since before *I even became an adult *doing honest work ooooh ( if not that Nollywood is the way it is, somebody will have millions of dollars by now

"But the society only recognizes and appreciates fully dressed women who are married (some with hidden dirty lives by the way) Then, why is that people just naturally assume that sexy females who are comfortable with their sexuality are promiscuous?" she asked.

Hushpuppi – ‘My Story Should Give Poor Nigerians Hope’

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Suspected Nigerian internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, has asked poor Nigerians to be optimistic of change and take solace from his story.

He said his story should give hope to people who are suffering because of widespread hunger and poverty in Nigeria.

Hushpuppi made the latest statement in a video which surfaced on social media, after he was arrested recently in Dubai and extradited to the U.S to face criminal charges for allegedly using the Internet to steal millions of dollars from people and institutions around the world.

The 37-year-old Nigerian who was resident in Dubai was known for living an extravagant lifestyle and flaunting it on social media.

"Una suppose use my story do documentary to give people hope," Mr Abbas said in the video.

"But una feel say people no deserve hope, na suffer they must dey use to. Una believe say na wetin I deserve na to suffer."

Mr Abbas spoke in Pidgin English in the five-minute video.

He said many Nigerians were living under the crushing effect of poverty because of bad government in the country.

He said his mum hails from Nigeria's Niger Delta region, but that she has never benefited from the huge money made from the oil exploitation in the region.

"What about people in Badagry, people in Agege, enjoyment reach their side?

"What about people wey dey Ebonyi state? Not for once I don watch news, I don hear say one development don reach Ebonyi. All those places dem no be Nigerians, dem no deserve enjoyment?"

It is clear he recorded the video before his arrest as a response to Nigerians on social media who were questioning his source of money and also criticising his flamboyant lifestyle.

He said Nigerians were coming after him on social media because of the "meat" he was "eating" abroad.

"Una come look say meat wey I dey chop for abroad na him dey affect Nigeria, na him make Nigeria no good, I no deserve to chop meat, I no deserve to wear better clothes, I no even deserve to look like human being."

He said he was making money as "a social media influencer" from countries that were paying him heavily to "host parties, (and) events".

Mr Abbas in the video talked about his personal struggle with poverty, how he got hit by a commercial motorcycle and how he lost his younger sister and a step-mother because of poverty and illness.

"I no enjoy one single enjoyment from government, my papa no enjoy one enjoyment. For my own generation, I am the only one that has escaped from poverty," he said.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari owes his father explanation on why there was so much poverty in Nigeria.

In a separate video, Mr Abbas is seen chatting over a meal with a group of persons, where they were boasting about the enormous money he had.

The people in the video looked like his close friends, from their interactions.

"Hushpuppi's driver is paid N700,000 a month," one of the persons on the meal table said. "People that are abusing him, you are working house boy job, they are paying you N35,000."

Mr Abbas cut into the chat to confirm what the fellow had just said, adding that his driver earned more than a "commissioner" in Nigeria and that his cleaner earned N250,000.

They all laughed over it.

One of them mocked Mr Abbas' critics, saying they would have done better by begging 'Hushpuppi' to employ their fathers as his driver.

Mr Abbas is seen in yet another video shot inside Dubai airport, where he was enthusing about the beauty of the airport and the "enjoyment" that comes with money.

Next, he filmed himself on a ride inside a Rolls-Royce headed towards the airport where a private jet was waiting to fly him to Paris.

"Thank you, Jesus!" He said inside the luxury car. Meanwhile, another Rolls-Royce was carrying his luggage to the plane.

"This life is too good to be real," he screamed with childish excitement. "Paris, I am coming in a private jet. Paris, stand up, for the real one is coming through."

He ate assorted fruits inside the flight and read Forbes magazine.

The video ended with Mr Abbas arriving at Paris–Le Bourget Airport and checking into a 5-star hotel, Four Seasons Hotels, Paris.

In a criminal complaint filed against him, the American authorities said Mr Abbas financed his opulent lifestyle through money he made from Internet scams and that he belonged to an international criminal network which almost scammed an English Premier League soccer club of about $124 million.

Kanye West says he is running for president

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 09:00 AM PDT

American rapper, Kanye West says he will be running for president of the United States of America.

Kanye West's decision to run for president of the United States of America is seen as an almost impossible mission because of the timing.

The father of four took to Twitter where he revealed that he was going to be running for the Oval Office in the White house.

"We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision, and building our future. I am running for president of the United States Flag of United States! #2020VISION," he tweeted.
Since West announced his ambition on Twitter, he has gotten over 300k retweets and a whopping 600k likes on that tweet.

Interestingly, his decision to run seems almost impossible as he has missed every single state filing deadline for the two major parties and nearly all state primaries.

This is not the first time the rapper would be making such declarations.

Recall in 2019, he said he was going to run for president but in 2024.

He made that known while speaking at Fast Company's Innovation Festival in the United States.

"When I run for president in 2024 —" West said, to laughter from the audience. "What y'all laughing at?" I'm not going to run, I'm going to walk," he said.

"What they're saying is Kanye's crazy — one and three African Americans are in jail and all the celebrities are in jail also because they can't say nothing because they're so scared."

Family Jubilates As Son Who Went Missing At Age 2 Finally Gets Found At 20

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 05:30 AM PDT

A 20-year old man, Samuel Nii Quaye who got missing at age 2 has finally reunited with his family, after he (Samuel) appeared on Atinka FM's "Obi Adi Mawu programme" to recount his ordeal.

The 20-year old man who had been living with a fetish priest all his life said he got to know the man was not his biological father when his wife died.

Samuel Nii Quaye disclosed that prior to the burial of the wife of the fetish priest, his name was omitted from the section of the obituary which had the names of the children of the deceased.

According to Samuel, he inquired from children of the fetish priest, who he thought were his biological siblings, why his name had been deleted from the obituary only to be told that he was sold to the fetish priest over 18 years ago.

After the revelation, Samuel embarked on a journey to look for his biological parents, a search which brought him to Atinka Media Village and subsequently shared his story on Atinka FM's "Obi Adi Mawu", show.

Samuel narrated his ordeal on the programme and before the programme ended, more than four families had come to report that they had lost their son some 18 years ago.

Of all the families that came, it was only the Nii Quaye family who returned after they were asked to go for a DNA to confirm the paternity of the child.

The result of the paternity test was 99.98 %.

"Immediately I saw the boy I knew that he was my son. He had a birth mark at his back which was confirmed by Atinka FM's Pastor Martin and his team and so I was not surprised the DNA test confirmed it", father of the boy, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Quaye said amidst tears.

Mother of the child, Alberta Yartey, who could not hold back her tears said the return of her son is a confirmation that there is a supreme being called God.

Grandmother of the child, Diana Collison, who was accused of being a witch after her grandson got missing, told atinkaonline.com that she has been vindicated.

Also speaking to Atinkaonline, the host for the Program, Pastor Martin Semordzi, who formally reunited Samuel Nii Quaye with his family expressed gratitude to God and asked the father of the boy to take care of him since he had really suffered.

"Obi Adi Mawu", a program, which brings to light the bad deeds of so-called men of God airs on Atinka FM from Monday to Friday from 10am to 12pm.

The Program is repeated on Atinka TV from Monday to Friday from 9pm to 10pm.

APC calls for prob as PDP leaders Atiku, Dogara linked with Hushpuppi

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 05:00 AM PDT

The All Progressives Congress has called for an investigation of reports of the criminal conspiracy linking the top echelon of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with international fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas also known as "Ray Hushpuppi".

Hushpuppi was recently arrested along with associate(s) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and extradited to the United States of America to face trial over cyber-enabled fraud and Business Email Compromise (BEC) schemes.

The APC said the links between PDP leaders and Hushpuppi should be a matter of serious interest to relevant authorities in Nigeria.

"We note that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has already declared the arraigned Instagram celebrity wanted over fraud allegations", said deputy national publicity secretary Yekini Nabena.

"However, the EFCC, Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and other sister agencies must investigate money laundering reports linking some PDP leaders and financiers to the Dubai-based international criminal ring.

"That the PDP leadership turned Dubai into their "Strategic" meeting place ahead of the 2019 general elections in Nigeria and "Hushpuppi's" affinity with the PDP leadership is not mere coincidence.

"At different times, "Hushpuppi" was photographed in Dubai meeting with the PDP's 2019 presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Senator Dino Melaye among other PDP stalwarts.

"While relevant authorities investigate the nature of their relationship and business partnership, we also challenge the PDP leadership to do same by opening up on the nature of the relationship, particularly the kind of services the arrested "Hushpuppi" provided them.

"In the lead-up to the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, we renew our call against monetised elections and vote buying schemes which the PDP has serially deployed in elections.

"We call on relevant authorities to up their guard to prevent these practices that threaten the sanctity of our elections. The people's will and votes should determine elections, not illicit money used to buy votes", Nabena said.

Bukola Saraki distances himself from Hushpuppi following APC’s call for an investigation into his alleged link with the suspected fraudster

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has distanced himself from Hushpuppi after the ruling All Progressives Congress APC called for an investigation into his alleged links with the suspected fraudster who was recently arrested in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to the United States.

APC in a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena today July 4, called on the relevant security agencies to investigate the links Hushpuppi had with some PDP stalwarts.

The party said the investigation is necessary considering the fact that many of PDP chieftains had several meetings in Dubai ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The statement read in part;

"That the PDP leadership turned Dubai into their "Strategic" meeting place ahead of the 2019 general elections in Nigeria and "Hushpuppi's" affinity with the PDP leadership is not mere coincidence.

At different times, "Hushpuppi" was been photographed in Dubai meeting with the PDP's 2019 presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Senator Dino Melaye among other PDP stalwarts.

While relevant authorities investigate the nature of their relationship and business partnership, we also challenge the PDP leadership to do same by opening up on the nature of the relationship, particularly the kind of services the arrested "Hushpuppi" provided them." APC's statement read

In a swift reaction, Saraki in a statement released by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, described as irresponsible and cheap politics the statement from APC in which it tried to link him with Hushpuppi.

Saraki in the statement said he has no form of association with the said suspect, Ramon Abbas otherwise known as Hushpuppi and neither does he know him in any way.

"The statement credited to the APC, the ruling party in our country, is one of the ways by which our anti-graft agencies are weakened and why the fight against corruption in the country is often viewed with suspicion by the international community. This is because when these cyber-crime suspects were operating freely and openly displaying wealth, the APC saw nothing bad in their activities. Also, the party at that time did not deem it necessary to call on the anti-graft agencies to investigate their activities.

Also, since the arrest of those cyber crime suspects and the subsequent damage to the image and the economy of Nigeria as well as the crisis it created for Nigerians engaged in lawful businesses across the world, the ruling party had been muted. The only time the APC deemed it necessary to make a statement was when it thought it should play dirty, cheap and irresponsible politics.

Dr. Saraki was the only political leader who has publicly made a statement through an Op-Ed article published in the Daily Trust newspaper of July 1, 2020 titled "Cyber Criminals: Confronting The Few Who Dent Many" and this opinion article had been widely circulated online and on other platforms. In that article, he strongly condemned the activities of these cyber criminals and called on the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to make decisive interventions to checkmate their activities. He has also got a research institution, the Politeia Institute, whose board he chairs to commence a research on the best ways to tackle the menace.

Such a noble intervention in tackling a menace is what Dr. Saraki believes in, not mudslinging and playing politics at the expense of the nation's image. At this point, we call on the APC leadership to rein in the so-called Yekini Nabena and compel him to desist from making and circulating such malicious, odious and offensive claims", the statement concluded.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, distances self from Hushpuppi

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 03:00 AM PDT

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has denied having any links with arrested suspected fraudster, Hushpuppi.

Earlier today, the ruling party, APC released a statement in which it urged the EFCC and other security agencies to investigate the links between Hushpuppi and some PDP chieftains. The party in its statement said Hushpuppi has been photographed with Atiku and some other PDP stalwarts like Bukola Saraki, Dino Melaye, and Yakubu Dogara and so they should be investigated to determine if they have any link with Hushpuppi.

Reacting to the statement by APC, Paul Ibe, media aide to the former Vice President, said the photo of Atiku and Hushpuppi making the rounds was a mere photo-op and not at any meeting as is being speculated.

Read the statement from Ibe below

"It is curious that the All Progressives Congress is mischievously trying to link Atiku Abubakar to the alleged fraudster, Ramon Abbas, AKA Hushpuppi, simply because he was photographed with Atiku at an event where many Nigerians had gathered.

For the avoidance of doubt, it was a mere photo-op and not at any meeting as being ingloriously speculated. We would advise the APC and Mr. Nabena to be very mindful of such senseless statements in the future especially as the case under reference is a subject of litigation in another country.

Had they been more sensitive, they would have come to terms with the reality that the case is a national embarrassment – not something to cheer about for any political blackmail."

FG Moves To End DSTV’s Monopoly, Says Multichoice Is Cheating Nigerians

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:00 AM PDT

The Federal Government has revealed plans to end the monopoly enjoyed by cable television service providers, especially Digital Satellite Television, owned by MultiChoice, a South Africa-based company.

The plan is said to include ending exclusive rights to sporting events.

Only DStv currently broadcasts major football competitions in Nigeria, especially the English Premier League.

The government said it had amended Nigeria's broadcasting code to prevent DStv and others from monopolising their channels and contents.

The House has been probing DStv for allegedly cheating its Nigerian subscribers by restricting them to prepaid plans and increasing its subscription rates on June 1, 2020, despite the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on the people.

At the continuation of the investigative hearings organised by an ad hoc committee of the House on the matter in Abuja on Tuesday, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had dismissed claims by DStv that pay-per-view was not proper for the Nigerian market.

Mohammed noted that StarTimes, the cable arm of the Nigerian Television Authority, was already operating for some years.

In an audio recording obtained by our correspondent, Mohammed could be heard responding to questions from the lawmakers.

The minister said, "On the issue of increase in price for subscribers, with the onset of COVID-19, one of the first things we did in the ministry with the NBC (National Broadcasting Commission) was to provide succour to broadcasters.

"We suspended payment for the initial two months to all broadcasters so that they would be able to absorb the impact of COVID-19. Therefore, it will be unfair for those for whom we have suspended payment to also at the same time increase their own fees. And I'm sure that the DG of NBC will take up this matter."

On the issue of monopoly, Mohammed stated that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had in 2019 set up a board of enquiry to look into the activities of broadcasting stations, to ascertain the potency of the broadcasting code and broadcasting act to curtail and regulate the industry against excesses.

He added, "We took that opportunity also to make right recommendations to Mr President, including the breaking of the monopoly of the various giant operators. It is to the credit of Mr President that he did approve those recommendations."

Mohammed noted that some recommendations would require that the National Assembly amend the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Act.

The minister said, "You will notice, in recent weeks, a lot of attacks on the ministry as a result of these amendments. These amendments have actually struck at the heart of monopoly. These amendments are, for once, giving back to Nigerians their own industry."

Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Mr Unyime Idem, asked Mohammed and the acting Director General of the NBC, Armstrong Idachaba, to order DStv to suspend its recent rates' increment.

Mohammed immediately ordered the Idachaba to issue the notice.

Idem had stated that the minister and all stakeholders present should ensure and commence full implementation of its directives.

The House committee's order included "a marching order to the service providers, particularly Multichoice's DStv, to reverse the recent June 1, 2020 price hike and revert to the old price as this is not the best of times to increase the prices of services, no matter the reasons for such increase, taking into consideration the ravaging effect of COVID-19 on the economy of Nigerians."

It added, "Come up with a robust strategy to break the monopoly and open up the industry for larger participation. PAYG regime for the digital TV broadcasting in Nigeria, with particular reference to DStv, GOtv, StarTimes and Kwese TV.

"Deregulation of content right by DTH (direct-to home), DTT (digital terrestrial television) and IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) operators. Encouraging local content participation through content sharing.

Throwback to when Hushpuppi's dream was to own two Okadas and One Danfo

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Alleged international fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Ray Hushpuppi, once said his dream was to own two commercial motorcycles otherwise known as okada and a commercial bus popularly called danfo.

He said this during a live Instagram video with social media influencer, Abisoye Michael, aka Oyemyke in 2018.

Ironically, 13 luxury cars including two Rolls Royce, a Bentley, a Mercedes Benz G Wagon, Ferrari, Maybach, Bugatti and others worth $6.8m (N2.5bn) have been seized from Hushpuppi.

The alleged fraudster, who is in the United States facing charges of money laundering, fraud, and conspiracy, said he grew up in Oworonshoki, a Lagos community of mainly low and middle-income earners.

Oworonshoki is very close to the Third Mainland Bridge that links the highbrow Island to the mainland.

Hushpuppi said the reality on the island was in sharp contrast with that of Oworonshoki and he was determined to make it in life.

He stated that he also intended marrying an 'amala girl' who would own a small restaurant and they would live comfortably.

Responding to a question, he said, "I was born in Oworonshoki which is like the tip of the island. It is the place from where you go to the island. Everyone in Oworonshoki was used to the island and most of the people were working on the island. I saw how people lived.

"When I started going to the island, I saw that cars we never dreamt of owning in our lives, they were using them to take children to school. I wrote a post that my dream in life before was to have two okadas and one danfo. It was the definition of success to me at one point in my life.

"I was only dreaming of God giving me two okadas that would deliver daily payments to me every night then I would have one danfo and date the daughter of an amala seller which would be giving me steady food and she would have her own shop. It used to be our dream at one point in life."

In the interview, Hushpuppi also opened up on his family.

He stated that he put his mum in one of the most expensive hotels in Dubai for several weeks and blessed her with the finest things of life.

He said, "My mum has been here in Dubai. She was enjoying one of the most expensive suites they have in one of the best hotels in Dubai. She was lounging every day. She was having the best medical attention in the world but I don't have to tell anybody because this is my family.

"These are the people that were there for me before you people tried to come into my life. These are the people who made me, who sent me to school, who always receive me anytime I go to hustle and things don't work out. These are the people I fall back on. They didn't push me away so why should I now expose my mum to the world? I don't have to.

"I am even closer to my dad than my mum. My mum is educated but my dad is not really educated. My mum schooled in London. I can bring my mum on the show to speak but my dad cannot really speak English but he is smart.
