N168 Billion Fraud: Hushpuppi hires top Chicago lawyer

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:30 AM PDT

Ramon Abbas, the Dubai-based Nigerian arrested last month for alleged Internet fraud, has secured the service of a top criminal defence attorney in Chicago.

Court documents seen by PREMIUM TIMES showed Mr Abbas on Monday retained Gal Pissetzky, a senior partner at Chicago law firm Pissetzky & Berliner, to help extricate him from multi-million dollar fraud charges levelled against him by American authorities.

Mr Abbas, an Instagram sensation widely known as Hushpuppi, was arrested alongside dozens of his alleged co-conspirators following an overnight raid of his apartments in Dubai on June 10. Emirati police and prosecutors said about N16 billion was found in cash out of an estimated N168 billion online scams linked to the syndicate.

Following initial tussle over his custody between Nigeria and the United States, Mr Abbas was ultimately handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) on July 2. He arrived in the U.S. on July 3 and made an initial court appearance in Chicago.

Although American prosecutors said Mr Abbas would still be transferred to Los Angeles "in the coming weeks", he has decided to hire a top lawyer in Chicago to guide him through the process of transfer to Los Angeles.

Mr Pissetzky made the first appearance on behalf of Mr Abbas at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on July 6, documents showed.

Mr Pissetzky was called to the bar in 2002 and has practiced in Chicago since 2002. His firm's website said he has been retained in high-profile cases and also widely recognised by major American media outlets as a legal consultant on serious criminal matters.

Already, court hearings have commenced for Mr Abbas to be removed from Chicago to Los Angeles where he was indicted on June 25 and a warrant issued for his arrest.

Mr Abbas has successfully argued for an adjournment of his removal hearing from July 7 to July 13, according to court documents.

The removal process appeared to have made it difficult for Mr Abbas to enter a plea, several days after he arrived on American soil. His plea may not be taken and he may not be entitled to bail until his matter is transferred to Los Angeles for proper prosecution.

Mr Pissetzky would likely counsel Mr Abbas through the removal process in Chicago, but it was unclear whether or not he would follow the suspect to Los Angeles. The attorney was not available for comments when PREMIUM TIMES reached his office on Tuesday.

Baby born holding mum’s contraceptive that failed to stop her from getting pregnant

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:30 PM PDT

Bizarre images appear to show a newborn holding his mum's contraceptive coil that failed to stop her falling pregnant with him.

The baby boy can be apparently be seen clasping his mother's yellow and black intrauterine device in his hand at Hai Phong International Hospital in the city of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam.

Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong said the device had come out when the baby was born.

The infant had it held firmly in his hands when the picture was taken, it is claimed.

Dr Phuong told local media: "After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture.

"I never thought it would receive so much attention."

The baby's 34-year-old mother claims she had the coil inserted two years earlier but it did not work because she later discovered she was pregnant.

Dr Phuong said the device may have been moved from its original position, becoming an ineffective form of contraception and allowing the mother to become pregnant.

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT

The Ministry of Works and Housing, says there is no going back in the proposed plan to shut the third mainland bridge for a period of six months beginning from July 24.

According to the Ministry, the repairs are necessary so as to avert a collapse of the bridge.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, July 8, the Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr. Olukayode Popoola, said the bridge was last rehabilitated in 2012 and that it is important repairs are carried out now to avert a collapse of the ever-busy bridge.

According to Popoola, the first three months would be used to carry out work on the part of the bridge coming from the Lagos Island to the Mainland, while work on the other portion of the bridge coming from Oworonsoki to Lagos Island would begin three months later.

"We don't want the bridge to collapse. We want to replace worn out components and joints. The bridge will be partially closed and there will be diversion of traffic from midnight to 1pm every morning for movement from Oworonsoki to Lagos Island only on the Lagos Island bound lane while from 1pm to midnight, it will be Lagos Island to Oworonsoki traffic only on the Lagos Island bound lane.

This will be in place for three months for the repairs of the Oworonsoki bound lane," he said

Popoola said the second phase of the work would follow the same pattern and would be for another three months.

"Motorists are advised to also ply the alternative routes of Carter Bridge through Iddo to Oyingbo to join Adekunle ramp inward Oworonsoki, or from Ijora through Western Avenue to Ikorodu Road," he said

The repairs on the bridge is expected to terminate in January.

'Don't be fooled, most of these cats are now dead broke' - iLLBLISS shades entertainers who didn't save for rainy days

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Nigerian rapper, Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor also known as iLLBLISS says a lot of entertainers are now broke because they refused to save for the rainy days.

The rapper says covid-19 exposed the poor financial decisions of some celebrities.

According to him, rather than save, these guys spent their money on exotic items like cars, pieces of jewelry, apartments and even drugs.

The music star made this known via his Twitter page on Saturday, July 4, 2020, while tweeting about coronavirus and the unexpected hardship and shock that it has brought upon some celebrities.

"Don't be fooled, kid. Most of these cats are dead broke. They blew their lean change on jewellery, rented terrace houses, sneakers, and drugs. Covid is a bastard. Now we know who saved for the rainy day," he tweeted.

Since the novel coronavirus became a pandemic a few months ago, shows and concerts which use to be a major cash cow for entertainers have been restrained because of the government's new laws and restrictions.

Seyi apologizes for slut shaming Tacha on Big Brother Naija Pepper Dem Reunion show day 20

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:00 AM PDT

As the show rolls to its finish line, things took a switch from the intense moments of almost romance to an eruption of egos and unexpected conflict resolution.

Catch the highlights of episode 20 of the Big Brother Naija reunion Show.

The biggest players of the episode were Seyi and Tacha who reminisced albeit on unfriendly notes, on their notorious Sunday night row. Ike and Joe on the other hand, tried ironing their difficult times like big boys. Catch the highlights.

Slut shamers go to hell and Seyi missed the bus

Seyi and Tacha may never walk down the aisle but their fans can now rest easy just as their alpha egos did. After several minutes of bickering that bordered on a lack of mutual respect on Tacha's end, Seyi's infamous use of a foreign slut shaming slur, other housemates weighed in and a visibly embattled Seyi took the high road, discarded his initial apology and tendered an unreserved one.

Taking a cue from Seyi, Tacha sought Venita's forgiveness for a remark that the former vixen interpreted as an attack on her parenting style.

Ike and Joe finally cease fire

Unlike Seyi and Tacha, Ike and Joe did not need juries and priceless minutes resolving their issues. Theirs simply ended with an easy trashing of Ike's concerns with Joe's smart mouth and how he often ignored the line. As always, Joe insisted his questionable character while in the house was strictly for the price.

Mi Casa releases 5th album, 'We Made It'

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 05:30 AM PDT

Mi Casa is one of South Africa's most exciting and consistent success stories.

The brand new album We Made It is a testament to a decade of raw pushing that saw this self-made success story emerge once again on top.

With a sonic uniqueness that has not only stood the test of time, but shaped South African dancefloors for the past decade, the band has gone from strength to strength with their Afro-Pop/House grooves and shown the world that nothing can keep positivity and a good formula down.

Now, ten years, countless awards and 5 albums later, the group has signed a record deal with Afroforce1 Records and Universal Music Group, making them a priority act for their region.

The brand new album We Made It is a testament to a decade of raw pushing that saw this self-made success story emerge once again on top.

April 2020 saw a strong kick out the gate with the first single, 'Church Bells.' Released alongside a powerful video of a space-inspired traditional African wedding, the single immediately topped SA's most played charts and firmly reminded audiences Mi Casa are leaders in their arena.

They have returned to South African airwaves with more determination, growth and relevance than ever before – and fired up about dropping their 5th album at home, in the African continent and in Europe this July.

Aptly titled, We Made It makes J'Something beam with happiness and speak about it as if it's his newborn child. He says, "We are completely re-energised with this record. It feels like we have emerged on another planet compared to where we were before we started the recording process."

The band, with close musical companions such as producers Jay Em, spent 3 months writing from a house in Mpumalanga with no distractions, pushing through a tough time when the band was probably at its weakest in terms of spirit.

Amidst the rumours of break-up and song-writing apathy they emerged with an offering that leans more towards a 'band act' than the 'club act' they felt they may have been before. Lyrically, J' Something takes the helm as always. With love still remaining a strong lyrical undercurrent, there's no doubt that this time the sex appeal is definitely riding high too.

The album is probably one of the smoothest Mi Casa offerings to date. Tracks such as 'Mamela' speak to the tender side of all of us as J aches for quiet time with his partner. Vocally, it gives a definite nod to 90's R&B, whilst smatterings of musical beach vibes bring the listener closer to that holiday. 'Obsessed' takes it right to the top with fire lyrics cradled in a sexy Latin-House beat.

'How Could You' is a gut-punch that speaks almost tangibly to anyone who's ever been played in a relationship while party tracks like 'Chucks' and 'Love Everything about You' remind fans why this band is still on top of their game.

A stand-out track is without a doubt, 'Eve' – a deeper, socio-political look at the dark place we find ourselves in as mankind.

With a definite African angle to the lyrics, the sadness of the track is visceral and although perhaps not destined for dancefloor dominance without a remix, the sheer vocal mastery by J'Something, Mo's melancholy pull of the trumpet and the slowed-down beat take the listener on a journey of awareness. In short, it's pure fire.

Another stand-out track is 'Home Alone, ' featuring AKA. The song speaks to long distance relationships, longing, isolation and all the hard times people experience when being alone, much like what so many people have been experienced worldwide right now with the Covid 19 pandemic.

The 3rd July sees the official release of the album, as well as the second single, 'Eve.' The band plans to support it with an exciting 9-province virtual tour and a host of other awesome digital content, until such time as they can perform live.

As a complete record one could be forgiven for feeling like they're witnessing the blossoming evolution of their favourite OG's. Emerging the other side as a more mature, slick and sexy force of nature. Mi Casa has literally, never sounded so good.

Monalisa Chinda replies Lala Akintoju after actress dragged acting body for visiting new mom Regina Daniels

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 05:00 AM PDT

Nollywood actress, Monalisa Chinda has replied her colleague, Kemi 'Lala' Akintoju over comments credited to her about the recent visit of the Actors Guild of Nigeria to new mom, Regina Daniels.

Akintoju in her tweets, said there were more pressing issues than a visit to Regina Daniels' home by the Actors Guild of Nigeria.

In a post shared via her Instagram page on Monday, July 7, 2020, the actress addressed the reason behind the organisation's decision to visit the home of Daniels and slammed Akintoju for her comments.

"Our attention has been drawn to an unsavoury statement by An Actress though not an AGN Member. Kemi Lala Akindoju on social media about the visit of the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria to Mrs Regina Daniel Nwoko, one of our members who recently gave birth to a baby," she wrote.

"Ordinarily, the AGN would not dignify such repugnant, uninformed comment with any response. In this case, however, it is important to correct a few impressions without joining issues with a non-member of the guild. And we also advise you to crosscheck your facts before making allusions."

According to Chinda, Daniels shared the news of her baby arrival with the organisation, which led to their visit. She also said the actress's mother and husband hold influential titles in the organisation.

"She also reached out to us to break the good news upon delivery of her bouncing baby boy. Mrs. Nwoko's Mother, Rita Daniel is the able Vice President, South-South in the current executive council of the Guild," she wrote.

"Her husband, Rt. Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko is the current Chairman, National Board of Patrons of the Actors Guild of Nigeria."

Chinda's comments are coming barely 24 hours after Akintoju took to Twitter where she slammed the AGN over their visit to Regina Daniels who recently put to bed.

"This is actually shameful. In these times where the actor's guild should show leadership on pressing issues like navigating the industry with COVID-19, like creating structures to stop sexual harassment in the industry. This is their priority. Even if you visit your member," she tweeted.

"Must you film and post? The videos we need to see about future and safety of practitioners. Yet, they abuse us and insist that we join. Sigh! 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️"

Regina Daniels and her billionaire husband, Ned Nwoko recently welcomed their first child together.

Hushpuppi's Friend, Woodbery Defrauded US Firm Of $15.3 Stashed Away In Bitcoin Wallet

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:00 AM PDT

The Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI, has filed a case alleging that Olalekan Jacob Ponle, who was arrested alongside Hushpuppi, defrauded US firms of millions.

Police authorities had earlier shared footage of how Hushpuppi and his 11 cronies were busted in a special operation over cyber-fraud involving 1.9 million victims to the tune of N168 billion.

Arrested on June 10, the suspects were said to have been involved in crimes spanning money laundering, hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft.

Alongside Hushpuppi, Ponle, who is better known as Woodbery, had been expelled from the UAE to the US where he is to face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud, one for which he risks 20 years jail term.

In an affidavit filed on Woodbery's case, the FBI said that part of the sum from the scams, which he pulled between January and September 2019, had been stashed away in a Bitcoin, BTC, wallet.

Bitcoin is a type of virtual currency not issued by any government, bank, or firm but is generated and controlled through computer software operating on a decentralised peer-to-peer network.

While BTC transactions are recorded in the Bitcoin blockchain, the identities of the individuals or entities are not recorded on the public ledger, making the platform partially anonymous.

FBI said Woodbery staged business email compromise, BEC, schemes targeting accounts through computer intrusion techniques to cause the unauthorised transfer of funds from victim companies.

Among these are schemes that caused a Chicago-based company to lose $2,300,000 while another firm was defrauded into transferring a total of $15,268,000, part of which was stashed away in BTC wallet.

The affidavit read: "Preliminary blockchain analysis indicates that Ponle received at least 1,494.71506296 bitcoin related to these BEC schemes, valued at approximately $6,599,499.98.

"These schemes resulted in attempted and actual losses to victim companies in the tens of millions. Ponle directed money mules in the US to open bank accounts in the names of victim companies.

"Proceeds from BEC schemes, ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars, were then wired by unwitting employees to the bank accounts opened by Ponle's mules.

"Ponle then instructed the mules to convert the proceeds to Bitcoin and to send the proceeds of the BEC schemes to a bitcoin wallet that he owned and operated."

Woodbery is expected to appear in court on July 9, for hearing on his detention.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In view of her plea, prosecution counsel, S.O. Daji, asked the court for a trial date and also prayed that she be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS.

Some protesters on Monday July 6 stormed the US embassy in Abuja, demanding the arrest of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Timi Frank, Dino Melaye and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts, and an investigation of their link to arrested suspected Nigerian fraudster, Raymond Abbas Igbalode a.k.a Hushpuppi.

The protesters said to be members of Concerned Citizens Forum (CCF) held up placards which read "Say No to fraud, Interpol act now", Interpol act and arrest Dino Melaye", "Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are", "FBI should investigate Atiku Abubakar."

They also submitted a letter to the US Ambassador and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, demanding for a probe of Hushpuppi's political allies in the PDP. They insisted that Atiku Abubakar's frequent trips to Dubai prior to 2019 presidential elections may not be unconnected to Hushpuppi.
