Nigerian U.S based medical Doctor, Stella trend online as she says Hydroxychloroquine cures COVID-19, Nigerian directors tacle the matter

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:00 AM PDT

In a statement signed by the President of GMD, Prof. Olufemi Babalola in Abuja on Tuesday, the doctors said "there is no scientific evidence to prove the claim."

The Guild of Medical Directors (GMD) has reacted to video claims by Dr Stella Immanuel, a General Practitioner (GP) in the U.S. that she has treated over 350 patients of COVID-19 with combination of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax, saying it is her own personal, unsubstantiated claim.

The Nigerian-born and trained physician, is trending on social media after delivering a speech on COVID-19 in the U.S. on Monday.

She said at a news conference held by a group of American doctors under the aegis of "America's Frontline Doctors" in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington DC that the antimalarial drug — hydroxychloroquine, zinc and antibacterial drug — Zithromax, were effective cures for the coronavirus disease.

The doctors held a two-day "White Coat Summit" at the Capitol Hill to address what they call "massive disinformation campaign" surrounding the virus.

Immanuel, who was joined by other frontline doctors, said she had treated no fewer than 350 patients with hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax.

However, the GMD president stated that research on the efficacy of the combination of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax to treat COVID-19 had yet to be concluded.

He noted that "we have watched with dismay the viral video of Dr Stella Immanuel, a doctor in the United States of America.

"The video has been shared all over the country and led to many people justifiably asking the question, 'What do you think, doctor?.

"The video was part of a news conference held in America."

Babalola stated that the group was founded by Dr Simone Gold, a board-certified physician and attorney, made up of medical doctors who came together to address what the group termed "massive disinformation campaign" about the coronavirus.

The guild president noted that while some studies suggested that it was effective, others felt otherwise.

He added that "it is true that Senegal, where HCQ is routinely used, has one of the lowest COVID-19 case fatality rates in the world at 0.64 per cent compared to 3.4 per cent in the U.S.

"As we speak, a study is underway at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on its efficacy and safety. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of all these studies should be undertaken to pool all the results and come up with analysis which will guide clinicians.

"So, until then, all anecdotal claims such as the one from Dr Stella Immanuel must be taken with a pinch of salt."

Babalola stated that HCQ may be a cause of serious complications and even death in some people, stressing that other anecdotal claims such as the herbal mixture from Madagascar had subsequently been proven ineffective.

He stated that the Guild of Medical Directors is a body of owners of private hospitals in Nigeria "and collectively, we are responsible for the management of about 70 per cent of the healthcare needs of Nigerians.

"So, a lot of the burden in explaining the problem as related to the video naturally falls on us. Therefore, we feel it is pertinent to explain or clarify the issues for Nigerians.

"We must reiterate that Coronavirus is real and COVID-19 is an indiscriminate killer.

"We know from personal experience since it has killed many doctors and nurses all over the country, including our very own Prof. Lovett Lawson.

The disease is definitely not a joke."

He, therefore, condemned the politicisation of the pandemic, noting that the whole world was actively looking for an effective treatment and vaccine for the disease.

"So, until then, everyone has a responsibility to remain safe and protect one another through the proven ways.

"These are — social distancing, wearing of face mask and frequent hand washing and respiratory hygiene."

Meet Olajumoke Ogunnaike, the brain behind #BBNaija2020 Lockdown House Interior Design

Posted: 02 Aug 2020 08:00 AM PDT

One of the highlights of this season of Big Brother Naija is the beautifully designed house. From the striking pop of colours around the house to the revamped HOH lounge, the house is undoubtedly a masterpiece.

Olajumoke Ogunnaike opens up on the challenges of working on the new BBNaija house.

Behind the brilliant design is Olajumoke Ogunnaike, the art director and task producer of season four and the ongoing season of the reality show.

In a recent interview, Ogunnaike who owns Lefteye Signatures, an interior design outfit, opens up for the first time about working on the billion Naira project for the second year in a row.

Describe your experience working on BBNaija last season?

Without mincing words, every work comes with its own challenge. The experiences and challenges faced during other projects we've handled made us better prepared and made our work experience much easier talking about handling the pressure that came with the BBNAIJA - Pepper them project. To add to this, there was a positive energy around me from the Red Pepper team that gave me the yes, I can vibe.

What impact has the COVID-19 pandemic had on your business?

Just as it has its downsides, it also had its positive effect. When we sensed that the drop in demand for our services was solely because clients were scared of the pandemic and high on safety from the team we put on our projects, we had to up our standards and got appropriate PPE kits to keep both the team and our clients safe in their haven.

What was the most tasking/challenging design you worked on in the house this season?

The most tasking and challenging design I worked on in the house is still the garden area; the time it took to complete the beautiful mural, being at mother nature's mercy and praying several times that the rain seizes also at this period coordinating about 20 of my team members on a particular wall with me not having control over the the weather and with a slim time line counting down got to me... but I'm glad we pulled through.

What should viewers expect in terms of art design of the House?

Just as our viewers were pleasantly surprised on the season before, they should equally get ready to be awed with the ambiance and warmth the Big Brother Naija house brings this season. This time we decided to keep it simple and soft and I'm sure it will be a pleasing feed-back.

"A lot of these Perpetrators have underlying mental health issues & being around them in certain clothing is a trigger.....sadly the victim still gets to be shamed & ridiculed, so since this government is not ready to do much, it would be wise to safeguard yourself."

"Yes, it's not about the dressing some will say & compare with Europe & America but remember they take Rape cases seriously unlike Nigerian.....Think about it🤔 #notorape #notodomesticviolence."

Over the last few months, there has been an increase in reported rape cases in Nigeria.

Reno Omokri – “Some Sinners Have More Love Than Churchgoers”

Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:00 AM PDT

Popular Nigerian author and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has said that some sinners have more love than churchgoers.

The Amazon Best Seller made this known in a recent post he shared on his official Instagram page today, July 30.

According to him, beer drinkers for instance visit their sick friends in the hospital and pay for their medical bills if the ailing friend(s) cannot afford to pay.

He however berated some Christians especially those he categorized as "churchgoers" for not helping, associating or showing love to their fellow Christians.

He wrote, "If beer drinkers hear that one of their friends are sick, they visit him. If he can't afford medicine, they contribute towards buying it. They listen to each other and provide moral support when their fellow is down. They even invest in each other's businesses. You in your church can't help each other. In fact, if you are in the ushering department, you can't enter the choir members clique. Yet, you look down on beer drinkers? If Christianity is about love (and it is), some sinners have more love than churchgoers!"
