Research Assistant Openings at the Board of Governors & the Federal Reserve Banks Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:18 PM PDT The Board of Governors and the 12 Federal Reserve Banks throughout the country are currently recruiting upcoming graduates to fill a number of Research Assistant positions that will become available in spring and summer 2021. The positions are full-time, salaried, and offer full benefits, including tuition assistance. Thank you for distributing this information to graduating students in your department to alert them of these openings. The Federal Reserve System is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce. We recognize the benefit derived from different perspectives and experiences and we look carefully at candidates' applications to identify individuals whose perspectives could benefit our work. As such, we especially encourage submissions from individuals of groups traditionally less represented in economics. Research Assistants work closely with economists at the top of their fields on a variety of research questions and real-world policy issues while developing a toolkit beneficial for graduate study and future career paths. Research Assistants typically work for two to three years, before going on to competitive graduate programs or pursuing other careers. We seek individuals with strong academic records and excellent written and oral communication skills. Competitive candidates should have intermediate coursework in economics and a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R. Most positions require US citizenship, but some Reserve Banks consider non-U.S. citizen candidates. Interested students will find general information about our Research Assistant program at www.fedeconjobs.org. This site also directs candidates to specific information and application instructions for each of the Federal Reserve Banks and the Board. Candidates must submit separate applications to each location of interest. |

Apply for the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of International Affairs Junior Fellows Program Posted: 29 Sep 2020 09:37 AM PDT
The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of International Affairs (IA) seeks outstanding new college graduates to help advance IA's mission to support U.S. economic prosperity by strengthening the global economy, preventing and mitigating international financial instability, and tackling existing and newly evolving global challenges. About the Program:The Junior Fellowship program is a highly selective, fixed two-year program for new college graduates to work shaping international economic policy for the United States. Most fellows leave the program to pursue graduate degrees (e.g. law, public policy, international relations, and finance and business) or opportunities in the U.S. government or with other organizations. Junior Fellows have a wide range of responsibilities, providing them with exposure to multiple policy issues and opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills. They typically perform a variety of tasks that include developing policy proposals, analyzing international economic and financial developments, providing administrative support, and conducting analytical studies. Fellows also prepare briefings materials and help coordinate bilateral and multilateral meetings for senior Treasury officials to engage with counterparts at international financial institutions like the IMF, Word Bank, and global fora like the G7 and G20. Junior fellows often participate in such meetings, including with finance ministers, central bankers, and other global financial leaders, and may have opportunities to travel abroad. Junior Fellows will be placed in either a regional or functional office. Regional offices oversee Treasury's engagement with counterparts across the world. Functional offices oversee Treasury's engagement with international financial intuitions and structure broader Treasury policy on issues ranging from climate change, to export credits, to foreign exchange. Positions are usually filled at the GS-9 level. Qualifications:Strong candidates will have recently received – or will soon receive – a bachelor's degree with relevant coursework in economics, public policy, finance, or international relations. However, a major or concentration in these fields is not necessary for consideration. IA is committed to attracting and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce. We recognize that different perspectives and experiences among our employees are workforce strengths, and holistically evaluate each candidate's basis of public policy motivation, academic achievement, ability to bring perspectives that could benefit our work, and professional recommendations. As such, we especially encourage submissions from groups traditionally less represented in economics. How to Apply:Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume, transcript(s), and two recommendations attesting to academic qualifications and career potential to IAFellows@treasury.gov by October 30, 2020. In the email, candidates should (A) indicate a desired start date; (B) confirm they hold U.S. citizenship (must be able to provide documentation); (C) note veterans' preference, if applicable; and (D) a resume that demonstrates 52 weeks (2,080 hours) of paid or unpaid experience relevant to the duties described above. Note that there is no need to limit the resume to one page. To demonstrate that the candidate meets the requisite relevant experience and hours, please expand on duties performed for each professional or extracurricular job or activity listed (volunteer work, work study, etc.). Please also include the time period when the job or activity took place with the average number of hours per week, (e.g., June 2020 to August 2020, avg. 30 hours per week). Candidates passing a first round of screening will be asked to respond to two short essay questions. Applications will be evaluated in December 2020 for fellows to start in summer 2021 (or at a mutually agreed alternative time). To be hired, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a national security clearance. Please contact IAFellows@treasury.gov with questions or requests for assistance. Predoctoral Fellowship at Opportunity Insights Posted: 28 Sep 2020 12:45 PM PDT
We are hiring several full-time pre-doctoral fellows to start in summer 2021 to work with our research group, Opportunity Insights. Our team's mission is to develop scalable policy solutions that will empower families throughout the United States to rise out of poverty and achieve better life outcomes. We pursue this mission primarily by conducting rigorous, scientific research that harnesses the power of "big data" using an interdisciplinary approach. We will be hosting an information zoom session to answer any questions potential candidates might have about either the position or Opportunity Insights on Oct. 1, 2020 at 11:00 am EST. Please register here for the info session. All questions can also be sent to hiring.opportunity.insights@gmail.com. Our first-round application deadline is October 16, 2020 at 5:00 pm EST. Candidates would ideally begin around July 1, 2021 and work for us for two years before applying to graduate school in Economics or another social science. To apply, please:
Much of the team's ongoing research uses quasi-experimental methods to identify causal effects and test the predictions of economic and sociological models. Current projects study the long-term impacts of neighborhoods, the role of colleges as a pathway to upward mobility, how social networks may affect poverty, and the impacts of historical place-based policies on residents. Results from these projects have appeared in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and have been widely cited in policy discussions, including the President's State of the Union address. The positions will be based at Harvard University under the direction of Professors Chetty, Friedman, and Hendren. The fellowship will include a variety of tasks that provide preparation for graduate school, such as analyzing data, developing statistical models, creating presentations, and editing research papers. In addition to working with faculty as research assistants, the pre-doctoral fellows frequently co-author papers with other students or faculty members. Fellows will interact regularly with professors and their collaborators – such as David Deming, Matthew Jackson, and Larry Katz – in a team-oriented lab environment, with weekly lab meetings, seminars, and other events. Fellows also have the opportunity to speak with members of the media about our research and support our policy team's work with partners around the country. Fellows are also invited to participate in broader activities at Harvard, including seminars and courses. The program serves as an ideal bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics. Most previous fellows have gone on to top Ph.D. programs. Salary will be competitive. As an organization focused on economic mobility, we value having a diverse research staff and particularly encourage applications from groups traditionally under-represented in Economics. Applicants should be completing (or have completed) a Bachelor's or Master's degree, have strong quantitative skills, and experience with empirical research methods. Candidates with research experience are strongly preferred, especially those with programming experience in Stata, SAS, R, and/or Python. Candidates need not be Economics majors, though they should have a strong interest in and some experience with Economics. Successful candidates have come from a variety of backgrounds (including from undergraduate and graduate programs, industry jobs, and other research assistant positions), and have a range of skill levels and experience with coding. We will review applications, conduct interviews, and make offers in October and November. Our interview process includes a coding exercise, a first-round interview, and a final round interview. Applications are due on October 16, 2020 at 5pm ET. We expect to share decisions from the spring round by the end of November. Questions can be sent to hiring.opportunity.insights@gmail.com. We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions or any other characteristic protected by law --- Frequently Asked Questions1. Do you sponsor visas for international candidates? Yes, we sponsor J-1 and H-1B visas. 2. What kind of writing sample should I submit? The writing sample should ideally be an economics research paper, but you may submit whatever you feel best demonstrates your analytic and writing abilities. It can be any length. 3. What should I include in my CV? Your CV should highlight your work experience, publications, education, awards, and research projects. Specific information about relevant courses and skills is encouraged. This guide (starting on page 48) includes helpful information on how to write a CV. 4. Can I get feedback on my application? Given the number of applications we receive, we are sorry that we cannot provide individual feedback. 5. What are you looking for in an applicant? Successful applicants have 1) strong transcripts including advanced courses in economics, math, or computer science, 2) a strong background in economics research, communicated through the writing sample and CV, and 3) a passion for our mission. Students with strong backgrounds in programming and computer science, even with less (though not zero) experience in economics, are particularly encouraged to apply. 6. Are there any summer research assistant opportunities? Our group only hires full-year pre-doctoral fellows. We encourage students to apply in the final year of their undergraduate or master's program. 7. I have another offer with an upcoming deadline – can my application review be expedited? If you have deadline, we will do our best to accommodate review of your application. Please email hiring.opportunity.insights@gmail.com with the subject line "Request for Expedited Review - Pre-Doc Fellowship Application" and include your deadline. Note that because of the depth of applications for our program, offers are made via expedited review only for exceptional candidates. 8. How much time will I have to complete the coding task, and when would this be? We ask a subset of applicants to complete an empirical coding exercise in order to demonstrate their skills in quantitative analysis and programming. We typically reach out in the weeks following the application due date, at which point you will be able to choose a 48-hour period within a 6-day window in order to complete the task. 9. Can I take classes for credit as a pre-doctoral fellow at Opportunity Insights? We encourage fellows to participate in the thriving intellectual environment at Harvard University and more generally in the Boston area through courses, seminars, and other events. Fellows may take certain courses for credit that are necessary for Ph.D admissions, like Real Analysis, and can audit other more "elective" courses. Fellows are eligible for subsidized tuition for courses at Harvard University. |
