He also requested for Nigerian police System reformed and more. Read his letter below…

"Dear Mr President @muhammadubuhari

Ever since I took this selfie of us I have not posted it but I decided to post it today so that you know I'm not speaking from afar.

Firstly, the truth of the matter is that you are the Father and Number 1 citizen of this country Nigeria, and in every family, where there is chaos, disagreements or misunderstanding, the family looks up to the Father to resolve it as the head of the house.

The last time we met, you assured us that you have the best interest of the Nigerian youth at heart, Sir there is no better time to show that the voice of the Nigerian youth matters than now. All we are asking for is an Executive Order from you to #EndSars because this is not the first time we've heard that it's been dissolved.

Secondly Sir, we need the Nigerian police System reformed.

Thirdly, I don't know if you know this but a police recruit makes N32k (less than $80) every month which does not justify but explains the immense corruption, extortion and bribery we see on the road everyday. We need their salaries increased to atleast N200k.

Sir, all we ask is for you to come on TV and stand with us now more than ever."

SARS has 'officially' ended, but Nigerian protesters are not backing down

Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:05 PM PDT

After years of relentless campaign against the culture of abuse by officers of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) of the Nigeria Police Force, the notorious unit has been officially dissolved.

Nigerians are not appeased and they want more than a mere announcement that SARS has been dissolved.

Nigerians have campaigned for years to have the unit scrapped after numerous well-documented incidents of abuse including harassment, extortion, torture, and extra-judicial murder.

The latest outrage that sparked over the past week led to widespread protests across many states in the country, the most publicly-charged demonstrations against the unit.

The initial days of the protests forced the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to announce a number of restrictions to their operations on October 4, 2020.

The reforms he announced were similar to those announced every single year for the past four years, so the public was unsurprisingly unreceptive.

President Muhammadu Buhari's appeal that he's committed to comprehensive police reform also did the opposite of calming the public.

The protests continued, and they started to spring up in more places with more people demanding the complete shutdown of SARS.

While bodies on the ground grew, the advocacy online went global with millions using the EndSARS hashtag on Twitter, and notable global figures adding their voices to advocacy.

Protests started springing up abroad too, in Germany, in the United States, and the United Kingdom.

With protests blowing up all over the country and many planned for days to come, the IGP announced on Sunday, October 12, that SARS had been dissolved across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

All officers serving in the unit are to be redeployed to other police commands, formations and units, and a new arrangement to be made for tackling violent crimes, the primary role of the unit just disbanded.

The initial public euphoria over the government's concession quickly vanished in light of the history of the government's failure in dealing with the unit.

While still suspicious of the dissolution of SARS, Nigerians are now demanding that the government implements a very widespread and transparent police reform that will ensure their rights to civil liberties.

This call has been made even more important by the high-handedness of authorities in dealing with protesters.

Police officers have relentlessly attacked protesters especially in Abuja where many have been injured, and Ogun State where some have been killed.

So, the protests continue.

Many protests have already kicked off on Monday, October 12 in Lagos and Abuja.

Some of the new demands include the release of all arrested protesters, and justice for all deceased victims of police brutality, with appropriate compensation for their families.

An independent body is to be set up as soon as possible to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police brutality.

Nigerians also want all disbanded SARS officers to undergo psychological evaluation and re-training before they can be redeployed.

Not only do Nigerians want authorities to expedite reform of the entire Police Force, they want it backed by the authority of a voice that belongs to President Buhari who has been hiding behind press releases and media aides.

The president, in his usual reticence, has failed to address the nation's currently hottest burning issue in a way Nigerians have demanded.

All the protests planned for this week will go ahead as scheduled, protesters have insisted, until there's enough to convince Nigerians that the battle has been won.

IGP disbands SARS nationwide

Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:59 AM PDT

The IGP disbanded the police squad on Sunday, October 11, 2020, after days of demonstrations against the police unit by Nigerian youths.

The Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed has scrapped the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS).

The dissolution of the police squad that was infamous for human rights abuse was announced in a statement by the Force PRO, Frank Mba.

The statement said the disbandment of the squad was in response to the yearnings of Nigerians, adding that all officers of the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad will be redeployed with immediate effect.

The statement reads in part, "In the finest spirit of democratic, citizen-centred and community policing, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has today, 11th October, 2020, dissolved the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) across the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where they hitherto existed.

"The IGP, while noting that the dissolution of SARS is in response to the yearnings of the Nigerian people, observes that by this dissolution, all officers and men of the now defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad are being redeployed with immediate effect.

"The IGP notes that the Force is not oblivious of the ever present need to combat armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the country which was before now the core mandate of the erstwhile Squad. He assures that a new policing arrangement to address anticipated policing gaps the dissolution of SARS would cause has been evolved and shall be announced in due course".

However, in a bid to prevent the recurrence of events that led to the dissolution of SARS, the IGP promised to establish a Citizens and Strategic Stakeholders' Forum to advise on police activities and enhance transparency and accountability in police services.

The statement reads further, "As part of measures to prevent a re-occurrence of events that gave rise to the dissolution of SARS, a Citizens' and Strategic Stakeholders' Forum is being formed to regularly interface with Police leadership at all levels and advise on police activities as they affect the general public.

"In addition, the Force is constituting an Investigation Team which shall include Civil Society Organizations and Human Rights Bodies to work with the Police in investigating alleged cases of human rights violations. The measure, the IGP believes, will enhance transparency and accountability in police services as well as providing a system of deterrence for erring police officers whose action clearly violates the rights of the citizenry.

"The IGP appreciates and commends all citizens particularly those who genuinely express their concerns for a better policing orientation in an organized, patriotic and civil manner. He reaffirms the determination of the Force to bequeath to the country a Police Force and System that is professional in service delivery and most importantly, accountable to the people.

Also confirming the development, Bashir Ahmad, President Muhammadu Buhari's Personal Assistant on New Media said, "The SARS officially disbanded, all officers serving within the unit are to be redeployed with immediate effect, IGP Muhammed Adamu, announced in a live broadcast this afternoon. #EndSARS"

Nigerian youths have since last week been protesting against SARS as celebrities and sports stars joined the conversation on social media.

The disbandment, however, is a pyrrhic victory for the youths as one of them, Jimoh Isiaq was shot dead on Saturday, October 10, 2020, during the #ENDSARS protest in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, while many others were attacked and arrested for protesting against police brutality.
