Since the 1940s, the mysterious Pig-Man (half-man, half-swine) has allegedly been spotted roaming around through the Staffordshire. There are several theories as to the story's origin, the most prevalent detailing that Pig-Man was the result of a secret experiment conducted in the area by the UK/US armies, after the end of World War 2. It is said that scientists at the site kidnapped and hypnotised a local woman and implanted her with a half pig/half human embryo. The exact purpose of this experiment is unknown.

The scientists closely monitored the woman for 10 months, and they finally determined that the horrible test did not work. A year later they were stunned to discover that her pregnancy was severely delayed. She bore a baby human, who had the snout and face of a pig! Much later this creature retreated into the woods of Cannock Chase to avoid the prejudicial glances of human eyes. For decades, people have since then reported seeing a tall man with the head of a pig roaming about the mysterious landscape.

Although he'd be well into his eighties, sightings of the Pig-Man continue to be reported. Some witnesses claim to have heard his squeal, while others have reported seeing a man, standing over seven-feet tall, wearing ragged clothes, with a hideously deformed face and a snout-like nose, observing them at a distance.

Lee Brickley, from Cannock has gathered eye-witness accounts for his debut book, knows the story well. He has been investigating the legend for almost a decade. On his book -UFO's Werewolves & The Pig-Man: Exposing England's Strangest Location, Cannock Chase- he describes multiple witness reports about the critter.

And he thinks he's found it following a recent email from the grandson of a former soldier. The human hog was a tale manufactured by military top brass to keep the public away from sensitive wartime installations.

The whistleblower, who has asked not to be found, said: "He told me when he was stationed on Cannock Chase, he and some others had been tasked with spreading rumours around the local area about a human/pig hybrid on the loose in the woods.

"He said this was a known military tactic for keeping civilians away from army occupied areas."

However, the Army Military Facility was built in 1914, and was only occupied during the First World War, and not the second. The camps were named Brocton and Rugeley Camp, respectively. Later, in 1939, RAF Hednesford, an air force training facility located South of Cannock Chase, opened for operation. If the story of Pig-Man did originate at this time, it came via the RAF facility rather than the now defunct Army Camps.

Yet the pig-man is still being seen, with Lee receiving reports on a weekly basis, belying claims the army was simply telling porkies. If he's not real, then there's an extremely ugly individual out there.

'Claire' is the latest to encounter the half-man, half-pig creature.

In an email to the author she said: "Kneeling down in the dirt was what looked like a man, wearing trousers, a blazer, but no shirt. His face was totally deformed and I can almost certainly say he had a snout."
