Ed Snider Center Leadership Award

Are you a University of Maryland student who leads by example and makes positive contributions to society? Do you have a deep commitment to and a sustained investment in community, colleagues, teammates, family and friends?

If so, the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets at the Robert H. Smith School of Business wants to reward you for the work you do on campus and in your community.

The 2021 Ed Snider Center Leadership Award will honor four students who demonstrate determination and show achievement in the areas of innovation and enterprise.

We seek students who have accomplished one or more of the following:
  • Helped an organization meet its goals for growth and change.
  • Demonstrated an optimistic vision of the future through their work in the community.
  • Championed goal-oriented collaboration and created positive outcomes for all members of a team.
  • Embodied integrity and exhibited an entrepreneurial growth mindset.
AWARD DETAILS

An awards committee will review all applications and select four finalists. Three finalists will receive $500 each and one grand prize winner will receive $1000. In addition, all finalists will be honored at a virtual ceremony on Friday, April 30, 2021 where they can join with family and friends to hear the announcement of the grand prize winner.

ELIGIBILITY

All full-time students enrolled in any major at the University of Maryland with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

To apply, please fill out the application form and be prepared to include the following:
  • Unofficial transcript.
  • An essay: Explain how your achievements relate to the qualities we are looking for in the winner of the leadership award. Please provide specific examples. 500 words or less.
  • One letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to your leadership/achievements.
  • A current version of your resume.

Summer Internships with the American Enterprise Institute ($1,000 a Month Scholarship Available)

Vincent Smith is a visiting scholar and director of AEI's Agriculture Policy Studies program and a professor of agricultural economics at Montana State University.

The intern will work on projects with Smith involving the industrial history and relevant policy effects in the agriculture and maritime sectors. Projects will primarily deal with the effects of crop insurance and other subsidy programs on production decisions made by farms and the impacts of artificial market power on US domestic and foreign shipping markets. They also will involve analyzing programs such as in-kind benefit programs and research and development initiatives. These projects are truly unique to AEI. They are high-quality academic research projects that will be published in peer-reviewed journals, but they also are relevant to public policy.

This position will require an interest in economics or history. The skills required for this work include familiarity with Microsoft Excel, knowledge of intermediate econometrics and statistics, interest in high-quality research and technical writing, and willingness to learn ArcGIS, Stata, and R. Familiarity with R, Stata, and ArcGIS is preferred but not strictly required.

AEI's summer 2021 internship program will be conducted remotely– interns will need access to a personal computer and a stable internet connection. There will be two start dates for the summer program: June 1 and June 7. The program will run for a minimum of 10 weeks, although most interns' end dates fall around late August.

Intern Scholarship Program
In the summer of 2021, AEI will offer up to six intern candidates a $1,000 monthly living stipend as part of a need-based scholarship program. Our hope is to allow students who would not be able to do so without financial assistance to reap the academic, professional, and personal benefits of interning at AEI. About AEI Internships
AEI internships offer a unique opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience in research, writing, business, and communications at one of the nation's leading think tanks. Competitive candidates for these internships will generally possess a 3.4 GPA from a top ranking college or university.

Paid Government Relations and Social Impact Internship with Hewlett Packard Enterprise

Our program is designed to mentor and develop talented individuals with strong leadership potential and strategic thinking capability. As an intern you will work with a variety of our staff on projects that will help contribute to our community investment initiatives. The intern's responsibilities may vary based on the demands within the department. This role will be split to support both international government relations as well as our social impact work.

The Internship is a 10-week project-based assignment that may include:
  • Track legislation key to HPE's legislative agenda
  • Support HPE's public sector business through public policy work
  • Track and benchmark digital inclusion initiatives by foundations, corporations, and other organizations
  • Create central inventory of technical pro bono projects with strategic partners that are aligned with HPE's business of digital transformation
  • Develop and execute a supporting event for signature HPE Accelerating Impact campaign
  • Additional opportunities in related projects

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with expected graduation after May 2021. Preferred coursework: international development, social justice, social entrepreneurship, business (social responsibility), sociology

Responsibilities:
Four-year university students who are working in a non-technical internship role during their study or in summer breaks between university semesters.
