Applications due by 5pm EST on March 31, 2021.

The Center for Global Development (CGD), an independent, non-partisan, non-profit policy research organization in Washington, DC is now accepting applicants for its annual Summer Delegates Program.

The Summer Delegates Program is CGD's initiative aimed at establishing the next wave of young leaders in economic equality and global development. Students will participate in a structured, paid, part-time internship program that will expose them to our work in various issue areas, provide experience in institutional operations and activities, and present opportunities for professional development and networking, with the goal of encouraging participants to consider a career in development. Through this 8-week program, CGD hopes to gain diverse perspectives and lived experiences while building a new network of young professionals to become part of the development community.

This opportunity will be remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CGD has implemented a fully virtual onboarding process, and candidates for the program should be comfortable working and actively participating/engaging in a remote environment.

Program Overview

CGD Summer Delegates will perform a range of tasks in support of the organization's programmatic mission. Interns will spend 8 weeks from approximately June 7 – August 2 working closely with staff to support and complete a distinct project related to CGD's work. Examples of activities include:
  • Provide project support for a specific program, team, or issue area. This includes participating in team meetings to learn about and support the work in a broad range of activities including writing, editing, analysis, presentation, communications/social media, donor relations, etc.
  • Participating in sessions to learn about the development landscape, key issues and institutions, and CGD's policy-based recommendations and research.
  • Taking part in professional development workshops around communications, analysis skills, resume review/career pathways, and more.
  • At the conclusion of the program, a brief presentation to staff on your project and your experience in the program.
Requirements:
  • Candidates should be currently pursuing or recently graduated from a bachelor's program, ideally in economics, development studies, political science, communications, business, or a related field.
  • Interest in economics, global development, political science, nonprofit administration, or other related fields.
  • Must be available for 20 hours per week, during normal business hours (with some flexibility) for the full 8 weeks.
  • A strong desire to help make the program a success through enthusiasm, participation, a commitment to learning and asking questions, and offering candid feedback about how we can improve.
  • Comfortable with remote communications (Zoom, Teams).
  • A positive attitude and great sense of humor.
Compensation

$3,000 stipend, paid in two installments. Candidates who do not have the technology (hardware or internet) to participate are still encouraged to apply. CGD is committed to making the program accessible to all and will offer support those with technology needs.

How to Apply

Applicants should submit a resume and a response (700-word maximum) to one of the application questions. Please indicate which prompt you're answering in your submission. Due to the large volume of applicants, CGD is unable to answer inquiries regarding application status. General questions about the program are welcome.

Application Questions
  • The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
  • Our families and communities often define us and our individual worlds. Community might refer to your cultural group, extended family, religious group, neighborhood or school, sports team or club, co-workers, etc. Describe a community you consider yourself a part of, and how as a member of it, you might add to the lived experience represented at CGD.
In compliance with federal law, all persons will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document. We are unable to sponsor work authorization for this position.
