But in a rebuttal, the NYSC had explained that its DG's comment was misrepresented.

Sanwo-Olu speaks on Twitter ban

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has faulted the ban on use of Twitter in the country, which he said the federal government could have handled better.

In a chat with Arise TV on Monday June 7, the Lagos state Governor said FG should have considered the economic impact of the ban.

Sanwo-Olu said;

"Federal government can handle this a lot better. Because of the number of eCommerce, the number of youths doing digital stuff on the internet, and we cannot throw that away and say it's not happening. I believe there could be a lot of restraint and better management from both sides.

"On both sides, there are issues that can be resolved between Twitter and the government and I think what they've done is not a ban but a suspension like they said, so in the period of suspension let us sit down.

"If we have 40 million users of that micro-blogger and another country has five million and they chose to take their investment to a country that have five million compared to a country with 40 million. It speaks to the reason we need to have that conversation with them. Probably if they have an office here things would have been done a lot quicker and better."

Tanzanians Launch Petition To Have BET Disqualify Singer, Diamond Platnumz, From This Year’s Awards

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 05:30 AM PDT

Some Tanzanians have stormed Twitter to launched an online petition against singer, Diamond Platnumz.

They launched a petition to disqualify the singer from the 2021 BET Awards.

The Tanzanian music star was nominated in the best international act category alongside other African heavyweights.

The petitioners accused Diamond of 'actively and publicly supporting deceased Magufuli's regime', but remaining silent when fellow Tanzanian artists were imprisoned and abducted in 2017-2018 over video clips deemed obscene by the authorities. Over 17,000 people have signed the petition.

It read;

This is a call to BET Awards hosted and produced by Black Entertainment Television (BET) to disqualify Diamond Platnumz

Diamond Platnumz is a world-renowned Tanzania music artist who used his popularity and his talent to whitewash and deodorize the brutal repression of the late dictator John Magufuli and his regime. Diamond is also a close friend and business ally of Paul Makonda the former Governor of Dar -es-Salaam who has openly persecuted and cracked down on LGBTI people. Makonda has also been designated in 2020 by the US State Department for gross violations of human rights including cracking down on freedom of expression and association.

Context:

Tanzania has suffered brutal repression and roll back of democracy since 2016 when (late) President Magufuli ascended into power. His regime curtailed democratic freedoms, basic human rights and Tanzanians witnessed never-before experienced atrocities like enforced disappearances, bodies bound and gagged washing ashore the Indian ocean, mass illegal detention of opposition politicians, critics and businessmen, crackdown on independent media, intimidation of creative people including musicians, actors and comedians. A particularly shocking event has been the brutal gunning down of opposition legislator Tundu Lissu in broad daylight. Lissu survived with 16 bullets in his body to tell his story. He is currently living in exile in Brussels, Belgium.

In 2020, Magufuli ran for re-election under his party Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) . Mr Lissu risked his life and returned to run against Magufuli under his party's ticket – CHADEMA. The election was marred with irregularities, violence including killing of innocent civilians by forces acting for or on behalf of the regime. In the immediate aftermath of the election, Magufuli and his henchmen arrested the leaders of the opposition party and threatened them with treason charges. Some opposition leaders saw family members killed. Today several opposition leaders live in exile, while hundreds still languish in jail on trumped up charges.

Magufuli was also a rabid COVID19 denier whose repeated refusal to follow internationally accepted guidelines on prevention and treatment of COVID19 resulted in many deaths that remain undocumented to date due to the refusal of the government to publish any figures related to COVID19 since May 2020.

Diamond Platnumz's role:

In 2016, Diamond made Paul Makonda the Patron of his music label and media company called Wasafi. Makonda has used the Wasafi Festival for publicity and to sanitize his image. Also throughout the increased level of repression when fellow artists were imprisoned and abducted Diamond remained silent. In 2017, he deliberately released a single called "Acha Nikae Kimya" (Let me remain quiet) as a response to the increasing demand from the public to speak up and condemn the crackdowns. Diamond to-date has not condemned or spoken up on any of the atrocities committed.

Diamond Platnumz is a self-avowed CCM party member and was the lead musician for the CCM campaign in 2015 and 2020. In 2020 despite a huge outcry locally and internationally against Magufuli and his regime, Diamond endorsed this brutal dictator, dedicated a song to him ("Magufuli Baba Lao") and several times took to stage with him during campaign. In October 2020 during the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, Diamond tweeted solidarity with Nigeria but deliberately chose to remain quiet on the atrocities happening in Tanzania during the elections.

After the BET Awards 2021 nomination for best international act, Diamond took to the media and spoke disparagingly of activists, then paid a visit to his party's headquarters CCM whereby his nomination was hailed as some sort of achievement for the party and the nation.

Why Diamond should be disqualified:

Diamond Platnumz has failed to show basic concern and publicly express any solidarity with his fellow artists like Roma Mkatoliki, Nay wa Mitego and Idris Sultan who suffered at the hand of the dictator Magufuli.
Diamond Platnumz chose to protect and expand his personal and business interest by praising and using his star power to soften the image of a brutal dictator and his collaborators.
BET awards have been always held in high esteem by many Africans for its recognition of talent of exemplary artists. The international act which was established in 2018 has consistently gone to artists who have been very conscientious and stood up for justice for African lives. Both Davido (2018) and Burna Boy (2019 and 2020) have been in the frontline at the #EndSARS protests using their star power and fame to shed light on injustice and even protect civilians from police brutality. Diamond Platnumz is a selfish, greedy opportunist and an apologist of a repressive regime who chose to deliberately turn a blind eye to atrocities and associate, praise and collaborate with renowned human rights violators like Paul Makonda and John Magufuli.
We believe that once BET independently verifies these facts, it will be clear that Diamond Platnumz does NOT deserve ANY recognition in these prestigious awards.

After a reported blazing row between her and Jay Z, Grammy Award winning singer, Mariah Careh has changed management.

It comes three and a half years after she signed a deal to have her career managed by the firm that Jay-Z owns and runs.

Mariah Carey parted ways with Jay-Z's management company, Roc Nation according to The Sun, it came after a "huge fight" between the stars about the future of Carey's career.

"Mariah and JAY had an explosive meeting which did not go well at all," a source told the Sun.

"She has made it clear she wants nothing more to do with him and has called it quits with Roc Nation.

"It is a shame because they had done some great work in the last few years. But this meeting couldn't have gone much worse," said the insider.

The Roc Nation website no longer lists her among its clients.

Another source knowledgeable of the situation tells The Daily Mail that claims of a fallout between Mariah and JAY-Z are "simply not true."

"Mariah's relationship with Roc Nation ended amicably and Mariah and JAY-Z are on great terms," said the source.

Carey, signed with Roc Nation in November 2017, and is said to have already begun "talking to other managers and thinks she has found someone who she feels has full belief in her."

"There is a heavily R&B-influenced album being finalized at the moment and she is planning a world tour for next year, so she isn't letting this stand in her way," said the insider.

R.Kelly’s Lead Lawyers Request To Be Taken Off Case Ahead Of Federal Trial

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 04:30 AM PDT

Embattled singer, R. Kelly's lead attorneys have requested to withdraw from the case ahead of his upcoming federal sex trafficking case in Brooklyn.

The attorneys, Steven Greenberg and Michael Leonard who have been working with R. Kelly filed documents to withdraw, which have yet to be approved, on Monday.

"Our reasons for withdrawal are significant and it is impossible, in our belief, for us to be able to continue to properly represent Mr. Kelly under the current circumstances," Greenberg wrote to U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly. The two Chicago-based attorneys also said that they "are willing to (serve) as effective stand-by counsel" if it's deemed necessary by the court.

The request comes amid reports Greenberg and Leonard are having disagreements with the other attorneys that are on the team that's defending Kelly.

"We refused to try a case with lawyers who don't have the appropriate level of experience and skill because that is not in the client's best interest," the two attorneys said in a statement that was provided to TMZ. "It is a shame that lawyers can't suppress their own egos or self interest and do or act in the client's best interest."

Kelly is also represented by attorneys Douglas Anton, Thomas Farinella, and Nicole Becker. Those attorneys told TMZ "that Mr. Kelly terminated both lawyers prior to filing their motion."

The singer's New York trial is scheduled to start on August 9. He's facing charges of racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, forced labor, kidnapping, enticement, and bribery. R. Kelly, who is also facing sexual abuse charges in Chicago, has been held in custody at Metropolitan Correctional Center while awaiting trial.

“I regret being a public figure” – Media Personality Eriata laments

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 03:00 AM PDT

Media personality Ese Eriata says she regrets being a celebrity as she laments about the difficulty that comes with maintaining a celebrity status in Nigeria

She took to her social media page to disclose that as a celebrity, one has to wake up to negativity and try to constantly build a reputable image, yet there are factors including trolls that constantly try to attach scandal to their personal lives.

Here's what she wrote;

"If I was able to see ahead, I wouldn't have wished to be a public figure; would have continued as a makeup artist or something else, It's totally a different ball game from what I expected, The passion to Exhibit my talent is what's holding me down. The fact that one have to wake up to negativity once in a while is crazy, even when u try to be on ur lowest key, there's always that one person who wants to bring ur leg out just cox u are a public figure and you'll make headline Sometimes letting pple close is like selling out your life, every word that comes out of the mouth has to be calculated, every movement has to be planned, you Automatically become a cctv coz u constantly have to be observant.

You have to constantly put so much effort in making sure you build a reputable image with no sandal; especially when you have shame and wish to live a private life. The worse of all is keeping up with AppearanceM; were U have to pay photographer/makeup Artist to stay relevant every week online, In most case all of this is just for content; not cox there's really an occasion/event

The crazy part about all of this public figure thing is when you feel the need to be in a competition ,or , the little you earn; you spend it on painting a picture of your life that isn't true, when u can actually live a normal life with…

… no pressure and still be a public figure. What I also find Tiring is the fact that pple expect too much from u as a public figure and then you find yourself doing what u are not suppose to do cox u have to meet up to that Standard (not me tho) And most times when u work yourself to that level, u end up wanting more or trying to keep up,next thing u start getting depressed and feeling the need to get high on drugs/alcohol when u are alone becoz of the pressure u have put on yourself A Then in all of this Someone is on your timeline or a blog trolling you; without caring or wondering if u are even okay mentally. A large number of celebrities are lonely that's why most of them are online 24/7. In a nutshell, it's not an easy life being a public figure, the least u can do is show them love and Encouragement They are human and not above having flaws, most of the things they do is for you cox u made tlotsm do it.

They can't stop kidnapping, armed robbery and terrorism… the country is as unsafe as ever… yet they can seize passports and block bank accounts of peaceful protesters. They ban cryptocurrency. They ban Twitter. Completely out of touch with the plight of young people.

Nigerian Government bans Twitter, and announce the ban ON Twitter. You can't make this up. Clueless.

— Banky Wellington (@BankyW) June 4, 2021

General Buhari and APC used this same Twitter to criticize past administrations and campaign for elections.. Now that the citizens are holding them accountable with the same platform, heat is catching them. They want to take away the people's freedom to speak. Dictatorship 101.

Nigeria's government placed the suspension on the social media after a tweet about the 1967 civil war deleted by Twitter.

Masquerade Opens Mask After Mr Jollof Gifts Him Cash

Posted: 09 Jun 2021 05:30 AM PDT

Despite the fact that many things are considered sacred including masquerades, a certain young masquerade seemed to have thrown caution to the wind after meeting with popular comedian, Mr Jollof.

Mr Jollof who appeared to be at an event and having a good time was seen with a young masquerade and asking him if he wanted money.

As expected, the 'spirit creature' responded in the affirmative and the celebrity reached out to the person carrying his wads of cash beside him to get something for the young boy.

After Jollof gave the boy his first bundle of N50 notes, he quickly went on his knees with his two hands up showing respect. The comedian gave him another bundle and the young boy continued to praise the celeb.

Eventually, Jollof asked the masquerade to remove his mask and he willingly did without appearing to give it much thought.

In the caption of the post, the comedian explained that masquerades only ever flogged poor people.

In his words:

"Na Poor Man Masquerade Dey flog."
