Countries Where Nigerian Languages Can Handy Come in

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Weirdly enough, knowledge of one of the major Nigerian languages can bail you out from tough situations outside Nigeria.

See the countries where Nigerian Languages can actually come in handy.

Due to many reasons — trans-atlantic slave trade, cattle grazing, immigration — small communities have grown in other countries where some Nigerian languages are actually spoken.

Ghana- Hausa
The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in West Africa with native speakers higher than any other language in sub-Saharan Africa, estimated at 22 million. They are originally from Hausaland in Nigeria, straddling the border between Nigeria and Niger. The Hausa people are nomadic in nature and began settling in the Northeastern part of Ghana over 500 years ago. However, due to trade expansions in the 18th century and the Fulani holy wars in the 19th century, the rate of immigration increased.

Soon enough, a Hausa community began in Ghana. The Hausa of Ghana are virtually all Muslim so the mannerisms and cultures of Islam is common in their community. Their presence in the Northeastern part of Ghana (and northern Cameroon) is emphasised by the radio broadcasts in Hausa to cater to the Hausa speakers. If you have a knowledge of Hausa and find yourself in that area, it will help to make the locals warm up to you. Here's all you need to know about a trip from Nigeria to Ghana.

Equatorial Guinea- Igbo
The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa as native speakers are estimated at 24 million. In Equatorial Guinea, Igbo is recognised as a minority tribe with about 53,000 speakers. In Cameroon however, there are an estimated 105,000 Igbo speakers in the country.

The Igbo "Red Eboe" people were also a huge part of the formation of Jamaica and its language due the large influx of Igbo Slaves during the slave trade. Hence, you are very likely to find the Red Igbos of Jamaica. Since most of Equatorial Guinea speak Spanish, maybe a knowledge of Igbo will help you navigate the country.

Republic of Benin and Togo- Yoruba
Though one of the most widespread languages, it has 20 million estimated speakers across Africa, according to Buzz Nigeria. Outside Nigeria, you can find large yoruba-speaking communities in Togo and Benin Republic. Smaller communities can be found in Sierra Leone, Liberia and other African countries.

However, due to slave trade, non-vernacular parts of the language remain in Brazil and the Caribbean Islands. It was even a huge part of creating Jamaican Patois language. In Benin and Togo, French is the lingua-franca but perchance you can't speak it, Yoruba is your next best option. Here is the ultimate food guide to visiting Benin Republic.

Here are 5 ways to get a snatched waist without surgery

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT

Do you want to get the ideal hourglass figure? Well, if a slim waist has always been a dream, look no further.

We are here to give you special tips that will help you achieve your dream waist, and quickly.

1. Change your diet

Nutritional studies have shown that eating whole grains, fruits and other starchy vegetables help you reduce the amount of fat you put into your body because they help you feel fuller for longer. Better still, whole grains do not contain any preservatives and are healthier for you in the long run. This is the proven best way to lose weight, quickly and shed that stubborn stomach fat. Bear in mind that some fruits are high in sugar and eating TOO many can have the opposite effect. Everything in balance and that slim waist will be just within your reach.

In order to lose a single pound, you need to cut an average of 3,,500 calories from your weekly diet. Do not starve yourself but bear in mind that in order to achieve your goals, you have to eat healthier not necessarily, less.

2. Drinks lots of water

An important thing to remember when thinking about losing weight is making sure that you drink more water. Water stops your body from mistaking thirst for hunger and you will find yourself eating less.

Water is also great for your skin and hair.

3. Quality over quantity

People who diet tend to go from one extreme to another and instead of sticking to healthy foods, eat hardly anything. The secret to dieting is eating more healthy meals, which do not introduce excess calories and bad fats and sugar into your diet.

4. Exercise

Exercise is the perfect solution to make your waist smaller in just a matter of weeks but it all depends on how hard you're willing to work. Results will only follow when you put in the effort and dedicate yourself to the cause.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Firstly, make an exercise plan which takes you from a basic level and works all the way through the stages, getting gradually more intense. Maintain an exercise journal to remind yourself your progress and hold yourself accountable.

For better results, you can also perform target-specific exercises, especially the ones that help shape the waist. These exercises are quite important; even though you cannot directly target weight loss on the waist, you certainly perform certain exercises that tone and slim your mid-section muscles.

5. Build your upper body

The best way to make something smaller is by making things around it look bigger, an illusion if you will. Remember, when you exercise your upper curves, i.e. your shoulders and chest, the waist appears slimmer.

Taboos in ancient Yorubaland

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Nigeria has a lot of cultural practices, a lot of which have gone into extinction. Explore some of the ancient beliefs of the Yoruba people.

Being the largest ethnic group in Nigeria, the Yoruba people are a proud cultural group.

They are rich in culture and tradition, which most still practise till this day. Every ethnic group, in the ancient days, saw the need to come up with rules that the society had to live by in order to keep the land clean. This need to sanitise the society and prevent cultural abuses has led to the establishment of cultural taboos and abominations.

These taboos are things that must never be done in Yorubaland, though some are not unique to the Yoruba people.

1. Adultery
Yoruba culture forbids a married woman to have sexual relations with a man that isn't her husband. A man that suspects his wife of cheating could be tempted to lace her with magun, which is one of the strangest traditions in Nigeria. Magun could lead to her lover losing his life or getting stuck while in the act. This taboo is more critical against women than against men, so it is highly frowned upon for a wife to cheat on her husband.

2. A king and his royal crown
Kings in Yorubaland are forbidden from looking inside of his royal crown. A king must wear a crown but he must never peer into it. The day he does it is the day he will join his ancestors. Kings could be allowed to do this if they insist on committing suicide.

3. A strapped baby must never fall from its mother's back
It is an abomination in Yorubaland for a baby to fall from its mother's back. It is believed that if a male child falls from its mother's back, he will always lose his wife at adulthood, while for a female, she will always have a lover die atop her when she grows up. If a baby does fall from its mother's back, the mother is expected to carry out some rituals to prevent evil from happening to the child when it grows.

4. Suicide
Committing suicide is a serious abomination in Yorubaland, and the body must not be lowered down until some sacrifices are performed to appease the gods. The body of such individual will be thrown into the evil forest or outside the town to avoid invoking the anger of the gods on the land. The family of an individual that commits suicide will be tainted forever in the community.

5. Unclean food
It is generally considered unclean to consume dog meat, pork, and cat meat among others. While many Yorubas will never taste dog meat but gladly consume African rabbit (Okete), the Ondo people consider Okete an abomination but will gladly eat dog meat with relish.

6. Same sex relations
This is forbidden in Yorubaland. Although many people practice it in Nigeria, it is still considered an abomination in Yorubaland.

7. Whistling
Men and women are not allowed to whistle at nights in Yorubaland. Whistling at nights is believed to invite demons and evil spirits into the house to torment people. Additionally, it is believed that whistling could attract snakes and reptiles into the house at night.

At 161 feet (49 m), the bronze African Renaissance Monument stands on top of one of the twin hills of Collines des Mamelles, outside Dakar, as the tallest statue in Africa.

Unveiled in 2010, the project was launched by then Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade who considered it part of Senegal's prestige projects, aimed at providing monuments to herald a new era of African Renaissance.

2. 66 feet: The Great Sphinx of Giza (Egypt)
Sphinx of Giza or just the Sphinx, is a 20.21 m (66.31 ft) high limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. Facing directly from West to East, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the Pharaoh Khafre.

3. 60 feet: Colossi of Memnon (Egypt)
The Colossi of Memnon, or el-Colossat in Arabic, is actually a pair of massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III. The statues have been standing in the Theban Necropolis for the past 3,400 years (since 1350 BC), at the west side of the River Nile from the modern city.
