The quest for the perfect body is leading Nigerian women down dangerous paths

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 11:30 PM PDT

The popularity of plastic surgery in Nigeria has risen exponentially in the last few years with many women on a quest for the perfect figure.

A slew of plastic surgeons have sprung up all over the city but following a tragic death over the holidays, we question whether or not the pursuit for perfection is as safe as it seems.

In Africa, for centuries, bigger has always been better and the figure 8 shape has proven the ideal shape for women and the men who love them. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with natural curves and some women turn to plastic surgery to achieve the look.

Whilst there's no problem with wanting to make a few enhancements, it seems more and more poorly- qualified practitioners are taking advantage of vulnerable and ill-informed patients.

The latest tale of medical misconduct serves as a cautionary tale for lots of young women and hopefully causes medical advisory boards such as the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council to take notice of the illegal operations going in Lagos.

A young lady named Nne allegedly approached Lagos- based plastic surgery outfit Med Contour with the intention of having a Brazilian Bum Lift (BBL), liposuction and fat transfer on the 31st December 2018.

The doctor, Dr. Anu was known for importing foreign doctors to carry out the procedures however, for reasons best known to her, on this fateful day, she decided to carry out the procedure herself.

On the 31st December, as Nne's sister waited anxiously for Dr. Anu to finish the procedure, she realised that the process was taking far too long with no update on her sister's condition. Worried, she allegedly walking into the operating theatre and saw a helpless Dr. Anu standing beside her sister's lifeless body. Apparently, complications had arisen and the patient, Nne, fell into a coma.

Nne was quickly rushed to Vedic hospital in Lekki where she was put on life support and was later moved to LUTH where she sadly died on Sunday 3rd February. According to doctors, fat had entered her lungs causing a blockage and subsequent complications. Nne never woke up from her coma.

Dr. Anu, fearful of the repercussions, is reportedly on the run and Nne's family are left devastated by the loss of a dear sister whose death was entirely avoidable.

Nne's death not only raised serious concerns regarding misconduct but has also opened a Pandora's box for the Nigerian plastic surgery community. Many anonymous commenters have come out to talk about friends whose lives were lost on the operating table and were swept under the carpet to protect the reputation of the respective clinics.

Nne's tragic death is set to mark a much-needed intervention into the way these unlicensed clinics and doctors operate and the lives that have been wasted due to negligence.

Our public healthcare system is in turmoil but we should hope that any private procedures we undergo be it medical or plastic, should be carried out to the very highest standard.

In the meantime, people wishing to undergo procedures should do their due-diligence and extensive research before choosing a surgeon.

Often the old adage rings true, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. If the price of a surgery sounds suspiciously cheap, you are right to question it because good surgery does cost a lot of money. From consultations to anesthesia, the surgery itself, medication and after-care, it all adds up.

How to verify your plastic surgeon

With the egregious amount of news surrounding non-plastic surgeon doctors inflicting botched procedures on their unsuspecting patients it is critical for patients to know the right way to find and verify the credentials of a board-certified plastic surgeon. Before booking a cosmetic procedure, there are five things each patient should do to verify their plastic surgeon's credentials.

Check their certification – Always ask to see your surgeons medical certificates and credentials. Check with the relevant certifying organisation that's responsible for accrediting plastic surgeons.
Find out if your surgeon's facility is accredited – Find out as much as you can about the facility that the procedure is being carried out at. Inspect the facility of surgery centers for patient safety and care.
Search for them – Many surgeons are listed online and there are resources that provide information on procedures and surgeons. Make sure you research thoroughly.
If after all this, you're not convinced then go with your gut. An ideal body is not worth risking your life.

*We have reached out to Med Contour with no response as of the time of this publication

Nigerian foods you need to avoid to help burn belly fat

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 11:00 PM PDT

Say no more, here are five ways to get rid of belly fat the Nigerian way.

Being overweight does not necessarily mean you are unhealthy but fat in the abdominal cavity, belly fat, causes the biggest issues.

Anything above 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women, is known as abdominal obesity.

But say no more, here are five ways to get rid of that fat the Nigerian way.

1. Avoid sugar
Say goodbye to all your sugar-sweetened drinks and foods. No more Coca-Cola, Pepsi, fruit juices and all the junks you eat in traffic and at home.

When you eat a lot of refined sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and is forced to turn it all into fat. Large amounts of fructose can lead to increased accumulation of fat in the belly.

Even foods marketed as health foods can contain huge amounts of sugar.

2. Ditch bread, late night eba, akpu and go for proteinous foods
Fish, eggs, cheese, milk, will help destroy that stubborn belly fat in no time.

Studies have shown that carbohydrates lead to 2-3 times more weight loss than low-fat diets. Eba, akpu, Fufu and all our really heavy foods are too starchy and full of carbs, it just adds more to your belly fat. Eating it in a controlled way (little servings) should help shed that weight.

Consider cooking your foods in coconut oil. Some studies have shown that 30 mL (about 2 tablespoons) of coconut oil per day reduces belly fat slightly.

3. Eat the right vegetable, fibrous foods and cereals
Spinach, Broccoli, peas, black beans, pears, all these are really affordable and within reach.

Cut that belly fat without breaking the bank. The best way to get more fiber is to eat a lot of plant foods like vegetables and fruit. Legumes are also a good source, as well as some cereals like oats.

4. Do not forget to exercise
It is among the best things you can do if you want to live a long, healthy life and avoid disease.

Spot reduction (losing fat in one spot) is not possible, and doing endless amounts of crunches, wearing waist trainers, will not make you lose fat from the belly.

Aerobic exercise like walking, running, swimming, has been shown to cause major reductions in belly fat in numerous studies. You do not need to hit the gym.

5. Cut down the alcohol
Alcohol can have health benefits in small amounts, but it is seriously harmful if you drink too much.

Observational studies link heavy alcohol consumption with significantly increased risk of central obesity — that is, excess fat storage around the waist.

Cutting back on alcohol may help reduce your waist size.

6. Try Intermittent Fasting
Nigerians do this all the time, so it shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish.

Intermittent fasting has recently become very popular for weight loss. It is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and periods of fasting.

Try 24-hour fasts once or twice a week or fasting every day for 16 hours and eating all your food in an 8 hour period.

7. Add apple cider vinegar to your diet
Drinking apple cider vinegar has impressive health benefits, including reducing abdominal fat storage.

Taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per day is safe for most people and may lead to a modest fat loss.

The health benefits of papaya seeds are unbelievable

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Specifically, pawpaw seeds contain nutrients that help heal cirrhosis of the liver and improve kidney health, as well as preventing renal failure.

It is not for nothing that Christopher Columbus termed pawpaw, the "Fruit of Angels."

And that he did so cannot be surprising to anyone who knows the health benefits of papaya seeds (the Fanta colour fruit).

Papaya as it is also known, carries some of the most incredible health benefits that can be contained in any fruit. Its leaves are as medicinal as any other leaf can be.

And when it comes to taking good care of our skin, pawpaw's skin can be very useful. Such is the richness of pawpaw that even its seeds contain some of the most surprising health benefits.

Specifically, pawpaw seeds contain nutrients that help heal cirrhosis of the liver and improve kidney health, as well as preventing renal failure. Its anti-inflammatory properties help treat arthritis and joint disease.

In addition, pawpaw seeds contain an alkaloid called carpaine that kills intestinal worms and amoeba parasites. And the papain in them helps in effective digestion of protein. (However, you should avoid if pregnant).

It is also important to note that pawpaw seeds can prevent and cure a good number of ailments related to the liver, gut, intestinal worms, and even diseases like dengue fever.

Here are some of the unbelievable health benefits of pawpaw seeds

1. It heals liver disease (cirrhosis)
Owing to some of the vital nutrients contained in them, pawpaw seeds help heal cirrhosis of the liver. They also help to detoxify the liver and keep disease s at bay, by eating a small amount of regularly.

However, in other to treat liver cirrhosis with it, take 5 or 6 dried papaw seeds and grind them up or crush them and take them with lime juice.

Do this every day for thirty days.

2. Pawpaw seeds kill bacteria and heal viral infections
Studies have shown that a few pawpaw seeds kill harmful bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella.

They also help fight viral infections, dengue, and other diseases. Additionally, pawpaw seeds mixed with milk are an excellent cure for typhoid fever.

And in Costa Rica, papaw seeds have been extensively used to fight aga (a condition that causes a progressive decline in mental functioning).

3. It helps to prevent kidney disease
According to professors from the University of Karachi, a public research university located in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, papaya seeds are said to be very effective when it comes to the treatment of kidney diseases

Results from studies carried out in the university show that pawpaw seeds can be used for treating kidney disease and preventing renal failure.

4. Pawpaw seeds minimize the risk of cancer
Studies have shown that pawpaw seeds minimize the risk of cancer. And this is because the milky sap that pawpaw seeds produce contains acetogenin.

Acetogenin, on the other hand, prevents cancer cells from growing in the body.

Other studies have also shown that pawpaw seeds and pawpaw leaves are effective in tackling cancer and preventing cancer from happening.

And in countries like Japan, most people drink pawpaw leaf tea with a little bit of pawpaw seed for a long period as it is believed to maintain a healthy body.

5. It prevents aging, as well as treating the skin problem
Pawpaw seeds do not only prevent aging, they also make our skin wrinkle-free. And this is because the nutrients contained in pawpaw seeds can help your body and your skin to rejuvenate better as some of the nutrients from the body will not be easily regenerated as the body gets older.

Studies have also shown that pawpaw seeds help in regenerating the old and dead skin cells, and by so doing, it helps to maintain the beauty of the skin.

How to eat pawpaw seeds?
Pawpaw seeds can be eaten raw, ground or crushed in salad dressings, milk, or honey.

It is, however, important to note that when it is eaten raw, which can be said to be the best way to eat it, pawpaw seed gives a strong, pepper-like but bitter taste.

Also important to note is that when eating pawpaw seeds, one should eat only small quantities of the seed and not very frequently.

Do all Nigerians love Jollof rice?

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 01:30 AM PDT

What is one food Nigerians can go to war for? There is a high chance you thought about Jollof rice.

The good-hearted Jollof wars on social media between Nigerians and Ghanaians prove that Nigerians love their Jollof rice.

Although it is not only popular in these countries; Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Cameroon all cook their variations of this meal.

How is it prepared? Jollof rice is made from rice, tomatoes, pepper, curry, theme, garlic, scent leaf, stock water and other seasonings.

The sauce (peppers, onions, and tomatoes) is fried, stock water is poured into the sauce and finally, the rice and a little more water is put into the pot to cook.

Everyone has their peculiar recipe for the preparing Jollof rice. Some people use palm kernel oil instead of vegetable oil.

Its history according to BBC is traced to the Wolof empire, "The origins of Jollof rice can be traced to the 1300s in the ancient Wolof Empire (also called the Jolof Empire), which spanned parts of today's Senegal, The Gambia and Mauritania.

Rice farming flourished in this region, and Jollof began life as a dish called thieboudienne, prepared with rice, fish, shellfish and vegetables.

As the empire grew, the Wolof people dispersed across the region and settled in different parts of West Africa, taking their sumptuous rice dish with them."

No doubt Nigerians love Jollof rice and spare no expense to garnish with as much animal meat as possible. This meal can be eaten with Goat Meat, fried Beef, Fish, Prawns, fried or roasted Chicken, Turkey and even Cow skin known as ponmo.

On the side, there could be either Salad, Moimoi, or Plantain or it is mixed with Fried Rice.

This meal is served at every party, birthday, wedding, burial or just a couple of friends hanging out.

Most people believe that 'party Jollof' is sweeter because it is cooked over the firewood.

There is a popular myth surrounding Jollof rice that the ones served at burials are sweeter than on any other occasion.

This meal has become the major food eaten by every Nigerian, it is the go-to meal when cooking at home and when ordering out.

Is it possible that Nigerian have made their palette boring by restricting themselves to this meal and this meal alone? It appears that some people love it so much they can eat it every day of the week.

I did a poll on Twitter just to find out if jollof rice is overrated. Here are the results.
