Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:30 PM PDT

Right activist, Bisi Alimi gives a clearer understanding of what it takes to be a house owner in Lagos while referencing claims by many celebrities of being landlords.

According to the activist, the cost of housing and maintaining properties in Lagos is beyond the capability of most celebrities, contrary to claims of being house owners by many.

Sharing his experience, Bisi Alimi gives an estimate of what it takes to own a property in Lagos.

"Let me tell you the dire reality of the housing crisis in Lagos and the illusion of home ownership by the upper middle class (your so called celebs). Last year, I was on a mission to buy a property in Lagos, Lekki to be precise. This is something I have been thinking of. So I went house hunting. I saw houses ranging from N100m with N8m annual maintenance fee To N30m with around about N200k maintenance fee. Not one of these properties have viable payment options. You are expected to finish payment in 6months max. The average annual income (not based on data yet) of a reality star in Nigeria is possibly N15-N25m, try spread this across 12months. I don't even want to talk about the lower middle class, cos those ones can't even afford to rent a gutter in Mushin …"

"An exemplary mother she is and we hasten to state unequivocally that Mercy Johnson at no time brought questionable characters to assault anyone on our premises. Anything other than this was based on imaginative conjectures which of course, we as an institution decline vehemently to endorse.

All you need to know about stroke

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Stroke is a condition that occurs when part of the brain loses blood supply, causing part of the body that the injured brain controls to stop working.

As the globe celebrates World Stroke Day on Oct. 29, annually marked to raise awareness on the health challenge, there is the need to note the risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes, among others, and know the symptoms so as to act fast, as experts emphasise the essence of prompt intervention to tackle the condition.

Also called Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), there are three types of stroke, namely — Ischemic Stroke, where part of the body loses blood flow, Hemorrhagic stroke, where bleeding occurs in the brain, or Mini-Stroke, where symptoms resolve within minutes or take up to 24 hours to clear.

The symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Some other symptoms are: sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, or sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.

From the onset of stroke symptoms, also known as "Brain Attack'', there is only a three to four-and half hour window to use clot-busting drugs (thrombolytics) to try to restore blood supply to affected part of the brain.

People at risk for stroke include those who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and those who smoke.

Others are people with heart rhythm disturbances, especially atrial fibrillation.

Stroke is diagnosed through the patient's symptoms, history, blood and imaging tests.

Depending on the situation, including the patient's neurologic examination and severity of stroke, mechanical thrombectomy to remove a blood clot in a brain artery may occur up to 24 hours after onset of symptoms, a procedure that is not available at all hospitals and not appropriate for all stroke patients.

Consequently, one can quit smoking to prevent stroke, control blood pressure, maintain healthy weight, eat healthy diet and exercise regularly.

This is because recovery for a person that has suffered a stroke depends on the location of the injury to the brain, therefore, always remember the acronym — FAST — if you think someone is having a stroke: F for Face drooping, A for Arm weakness, S for speech difficulty and T for Time to call 911.

5 ways to get rid from back ache

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Have you experienced excruciating pain in your lower back before?

Back pain can be caused by bad posture, muscle strain, lifting heavy objects and lifestyle choices in general.

Dealing with pain in your back can be extremely uncomfortable.

Here is how to get some relief;

1. Stretch
Maybe you have been sitting or laying down for too long. Get up and stretch! Take a short walk or try yoga.

Swimming and other water sports can also bring relief to your aching back.

Before you start your daily exercise do not forget to stretch out your muscles for increased flexibility.

2. Exercise
Exercise your body loosens tense muscles and causes endorphins to be released. Endorphins are happy hormones that relieve pain.

Try these exercises to straighten your aching muscles;

Touching the toes: This simple exercise can make your back feel better. Bend forward and touch your toes to relieve your back from pains.

Child's Pose: You know how children sit when they are tired? The child pose would have you on the floor squatting with your knees, your head leaning forward between your knees and your hands stretched.

Cat-Cow Pose: Kneel on your legs and hands and raise your back towards the ceiling.

Cobra Pose: Lay flat on your stomach and raise your upper body up, let your head point towards the ceiling.

3. Wear comfortable shoes
If your shoes are too tight or too high they can easily strain your back, legs and neck.

High heels can mess up with body alignment and cause back pain.

Wear comfortable shoes that fit.

4. Sit properly

If you are always slouching when sitting on a desk you can easily get back pain.

Work with a comfortable chair and desk to improve your posture. A general rule that makes your back not ache is to sit in such a way that the computer screen is at your eye level.

5. Use heat or cold compress
After a long day, you feel your back aching like crazy. How do you get some relief? A hot and cold water compress would help you feel way better. Apply an icepack wrapped in a towel and massage your back.

A hot cloth also helps to relieve stiff and tense muscles.

Get a good mattress
If your mattress is no good or your pillows are too soft, there is the likelihood that you won't sleep well and have intense back pains.

Having a very good mattress will work magic for your back.

The 5 worst drivers on Lagos roads

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:00 AM PDT

Driving on the streets of Lagos will have you experiencing different characters.

Lagos is the third most stressful city in the world with people spending 30 hours every week in traffic. No wonder they are quite eccentric in their driving and mannerisms.

If you do not experience any weird characters driving in Lagos, you are most likely the one people hurl insults at and you need to do better.

These are some of the archetypes of worst drivers in Lagos;

1. The king of the road
These Danfo (yellow buses) drivers are the root cause of almost every traffic and can be called 'the kings of the road.' They stop whenever they want to, enter whatever lane they feel like and drive their buses like it is an invisible machine.

They can never be seen at a mechanics workshop or a car wash so their vehicles can break down anywhere and anytime.

2. The whip carriers
These ones are angry birds. They might be members of the armed forces or not but one very common thing is they are not afraid of whipping careless drivers who cross them.

3. The ones lost on the phone
It could be an emergency or maybe it is not but an entire lineup of cars are honking behind a particular driver and there they are peacefully making a phone call in their vehicle, the window rolled up without a care in the world.

4. The ones who can't drive
Another menace to the entire population of Lagos State. To make a turn is a problem, to change lanes is a problem, to reverse their car is a problem. By the time they go home, they have done a good job of bashing everyone else's cars.

5. The ones who do outrageous things on the road
Perhaps Lagosians mistake the road to their homes. I once saw a woman who was shaving her outgrown chin hairs in the middle of the road with cars waiting behind her. Why can't you just park ma?

Others will begin a full-blown negotiation with hawkers in the middle of traffic and use your horns as some sort of music because they will not move until they have made their purchase.

Ultimately, commuting in Lagos is generally a hellish experience and driving etiquette barely exists.

The best ways to deal with hyperpigmentation

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:00 AM PDT

How can you have an even toned skin and brighten dark spots easily?

Hyperpigmentation means a lot of things. It is used to describe various skin conditions like acne scars, freckles, melasma and dark spots.

Hyperpigmentation refers to a skin condition where a part of your skin is darker than the rest.

What cause hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is caused by things like acne scars - the result of the inflammation that comes from constantly bursting pimples.

It can also be caused by some medications like birth control pills and hormonal imbalance.

Constant friction can also cause hyperpigmentation. An example of this is your thighs rubbing against each other, your armpits and your arms, bra straps being too tight.

However, the major cause of hyperpigmentation is excess exposure to the sun.

So you notice that some parts of your body are darker than others. What do you do?

Apply sunscreen
Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. It is important to use sunscreen or lotions that have SBF 30.

Cleanser
You need a good facial cleanser to get rid of whatever dirt is on your face. Dirt causes bacteria and bacteria leads to acne and hyperpigmentation.

Cleansers also help to lock in moisture in your skin.

MoisturiseContrary to popular belief. You need three essential ingredients for a good moisturizer, humectants like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and glycerin pulls moisture into the skin.

Occulsives like dimethicone, lanolin and mineral oil and emollients like lipids and oil help in trapping moisture and softening skin.

Following these three routine of applying sunscreen, cleanser and moisturising will have you well on your way to a more even toned skin.

Here are 5 things you need to do if you are tired of eating rice

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:30 AM PDT

"Everyday rice and spaghetti? What is there to eat again?" Has that ever been you?

It is easy to get tired of eating jollof rice and spaghetti, it seems like that is all you ever get to eat. Well, it doesn't have to be like this.

If you eat out, there are new options you should try to expand your palette. Even if you cook your meals by yourself you can also expand your cuisine from the more common options.

Here are some ways to spice up your diet.

1. Try some other food combinations
Akara and pap, beans and garri, pancakes and hot dogs, beans and plantain, Moi-Moi and pap, yam and eggs, beans and bread, boli and fish, plantain porridge, yam porridge, rice and vegetable, rice and egusi.

There are many other food combinations to try, do not limit yourself to just rice.

2. Try soups and solids
You are tired of eating yam, rice and spaghetti? Why don't you try solid meals like semo, pounded yam, amala, fufu and eba?

Every state in Nigeria has its own peculiar soups but the south-south and the south-east trump them all. Why don't you try afang, banga and Ndi Kang Kong?

If you are not disposed to that, try amala with assorted meat but make sure you are eating at a place where it does not cost N13,000.

If you cook at home, soups do not take as much time as we are led to believe; ogbono, vegetables and okro take less than 30 minutes to be prepared.

Learning to bake or buy baked goods. Croissants, doughnuts, cakes, pies and other confectionaries add some fluff to your diet.

4. Try different recipes
You can eat the same meals but in different ways. Have you tried stir-fry jollof rice or basmati rice? Order for a different type of spaghetti. It gives you the illusion of not eating the same food all the time.

If you cook your food, then try out different recipes. Learn new ways to make your regular meals.

5. Experiment with restaurants
Try other types of meals like seafood, Chinese food, Jamaican food and so on. Move from your usual Nigerian food. Go to a different restaurant.

Salle talked about her journey back home and how it feels to see her mom and her loved ones after a long time.

Even though this video was only meant to shed more light about how she feels, there are two things that are notable in this video.

1. It confirms the authenticity of her story.

A lot of controversies came up after the 17-year-old singer, Salle, was discovered. Some said that her story was fabricated, and she was not the person she claimed to be.

Well, this video has shown that her story was true, and she was never from a rich background. Looking at the house her parents lived in, one would know she didn't lie about her background.

Simi – I Thought I Would Be Attacked For Releasing A Song To Fight For Women

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Talented musician Simi has expressed her amazement at how Nigerians embraced her newest single titled 'Woman' that was released on October 15, 2021.

The versatile singer said he expected people to criticize and attack her for releasing a song that speaks about how women in the Nigerian society are being downplayed.

The song also condemns the custom of not giving women due credits for the incredible jobs they do and how culture made things hard for the female gender.

Simi, a mother of one, disclosed that she was uncomfortable about some negative ideas people have for women, which was why she used her sound to speak for them and correct those notions.

The 'Joromi' crooner added she doesn't hate men, however, wants life to be better for her gender. In an Instagram Live session, Simi said; "There were some ideas about women that were not very useful for women but I felt like it would be good to use my sound to speak out for my people (women)."

"The funny thing is that I expected more backlash and attacks after I dropped the song. But I am genuinely surprised that people are receptive to the song. I think that people are more open to the discussions especially if one is privileged in life.

"I had an interview a few days ago, and the interviewer asked me "Do you hate men?" I replied that I don't think I have ever said or done anything that insinuates that I hate men. I don't have any reason to hate men. I simply want better things for women; I just want women to have what they deserve."

"I may not be able to change the world today or tomorrow, but I am hoping that it can be a part of the steps that we are going to take to (get to) that point. Obviously, things used to be worse than this, but thankfully we have more women now that are more outspoken than in the past."

"I think it is hard to get acknowledgement as a woman, firstly some people do not even expect that one would be good. Some people question one's talent compared to the male counterpart. But it is like as a woman, one is undermined and will have to work extra hard to get half the things that men have.

"Honestly, it is exhausting, especially when one is speaking out and nothing is changing. By the grace of God, I have got a level of success, but there are some women who haven't. They are still trying to find their path, who would speak and fight for them because their voices are not that loud?"

"But if one is talking, people think one is talking too much if it is something that makes them uncomfortable, but if it is something they like or they agree with, they will support you. However, I think it has become a little bit easier but I know a lot of female artiste that are still waiting for their break. We are not halfway there."

BBNaija star, Ese Eriata – “The biggest mistake is letting your parents decide who you marry”

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 03:00 AM PDT

BBNaija star, Ese Eriata condemns the tradition of parents deciding a partner for their children when marriage age is reached.

According to the reality star, the tradition needs to be abolished as it comes with long-term regrets for many who end up struggling to find a balance in their life.

Ese Eriata further added that the parents' decision sometimes is influenced by tribalism which in no doubt is a flawed stereotype.

"The biggest mistake u can ever make in your life is letting your parents decide who u should end up with
How parents always think they know it all because they feel they've been there; makes me wonder if they realize they are using their clock to set our time. All they want is the best for you and what will favor the family. But they neglect the part where they have to be sure if what they want for u is what u want for yourself. I hear things like "I'm not into my marriage" and when u ask "why?" You hear things like "my parents wanted it". Do you know the regret that comes with ending up with someone u don't want to be with?
Then they Console you with "don't worry love will come along the line" shey na from arik airline or Emirates airline e go pass come
It's 2021! That nonsense has to stop honestly. The most Irritating part is when they are specific on the tribe not to bring home like say e no get tribe way no Dey do evil things. What has tribe got to do with someone's personality? When will our parents know that tribe doesn't Determine a good person? Even your very own town person fit still run u street," she wrote.

Here are 5 dangerous effects of drinking soda

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:00 AM PDT

At most Nigerian parties, the go to drink is usually soda or 'mineral'. It may seem innocent initially, but if most people knew these five dangerous effects of drinking soda, they may have a re-think:

At most Nigerian parties, the go to drink is usually soda or 'mineral'.

According to the CEO of Your Nutrition Delivery Erik Frank, "One soda every once in a while won't kill you, but a significant daily intake will lead to health issues.Like cigarettes, soda should come with a warning from the surgeon general. Why else would the City of New York try to limit its availability?"

Soda is the most common class of drink but most people don't realize just how terrible it is for you. Here are five reasons why you need to get rid of soda from your diet:

It makes you crave fatty foods:

Not only is soda filled with calories, but it makes you want even more calories, according to chief clinical dietician at Cassena Care Felice Kosakavich. "Drinking soda can lead to a false sense of hunger causing cravings for more sweets," says Kosakavich.

This is because your body thinks it needs more energy after blood sugar spikes. It makes you "feel tired, sluggish and usually hungry," according to registered dietician and nutritionist Kimberly Tessmer. "In fact studies have found that people tend to eat more on days that they drink more soda."

Soda can cause belly fat:

If you start to feel rounded in your tummy region, a certified nutritionist and fitness trainer, Franci Cohen, explained "The high sugar content of soda has been conclusively linked to an increase in abdominal fat-which is dangerous, as this is where many vital organs are."

Soda has way too much sugar:

Obviously, soda has sugar. But that's not the issue, "The issue with soda is not that it has sugar," according to renowned health and nutrition expert Jacob Teitelbaum. "Rather, it is with how much sugar—an astounding three quarters of a teaspoon per ounce."

It may mean diabetes:

Fatigue is pretty bad but still not the worst. "Over time, this push and pull on the pancreas to produce more insulin and the cells to accept more sugar results in depleted insulin and insulin resistance of the cells—diabetes," says Dean.

The more soda you take, the less you hydrate your body:

This is super vital: any time you're drinking soda, you're rejecting water. "Sodas do nothing but fill your body with empty calories and sugar," according to trainer and YouTube celebrity Mike Chang. "If you are drinking sodas, you are depriving your body of good clean water and increasing the demand on the pancreas, as it produces the insulin-producing cells with a greater challenge."

Tired of water? "My favorite substitute for soda is some flavored sparkling water (try lemon or lime) with a splash of cranberry and a twist of citrus," says fitness expert Jennifer Galardi.

Whenever you want to take that second bottle or can of soda in a week, remember these health hazards and try to cut off more intake of soda. Let us know any other harmful effects and ways they can be corrected.

Here Are 7 Strange Traditions Across Africa

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:30 AM PDT

These ethnic communities practice certain traditions that will shock you.

Africa is full of bizarre practices some of which are known, and many others that are unknown to the world.

Some of these strange customs still exist many years after civilization. These ethnic communities practice certain traditions that will shock you.

1. Stealing each other's wives - Niger
In the Wodaabe tribe of Niger in West Africa, men are known to steal each other's wives. The Wodaabe's first marriage is arranged by their parents in infancy and must be between cousins of the same lineage. However, at the yearly Gerewol Festival, Wodaabe men wear elaborate makeup and costumes and dance to impress the women – and hopefully steal a new wife.

If a man is able to steal away undetected (especially from a current husband who may not want to part with his wife), then they become socially recognized.

2. Spitting as a form of greeting - Maasai tribe
The Maasai tribe, found in Kenya and Tanzania, spit as a way of saying hello. While the Englishman would say hello, spitting is a way of greeting.

Asides that, when a baby is born, it is the custom of the men to spit on the newborn and refer to him as bad. They believe this would protect the baby from evil spirits. Maasai warriors also spit in their hands before shaking the hand of an elder. Furthermore, the Maasai tribe is also famous for its drinking of fresh animal blood.

3. Festival of the dead - Malawi
The Chewa community is a Bantu tribe mostly found in Malawi.

During the burial ceremony of a tribe member, it is customary for the body of the deceased to be washed.

The corpse is taken to a sacred place where the cleansing is done by slitting the throat and pouring water through the insides of the dead.

The water is squeezed out of the body until it comes out clean. The water is then collected and used to prepare a meal for the whole community.

4. Bull jumping in Ethiopia
In Ethiopia young boys have to undergo some form of ritual to prove their manhood this involves a series of events.

A young boy has to strip naked, run, jump and land on the back of a bull. This is then followed by running across the backs of several bulls arranged in a straight and closely-knit herd pulled by the tail and horns by older men. The practice is known as Hamar.

5. Potency test in Uganda
In the Banyankole tribe, a minority tribe living in Uganda, marriage means quite a burden to the bride's aunt.

When a couple wants to get married, the aunt has to have sex with the groom as a "potency test" and furthermore, she has to test the bride's virginity.

6. Beating to earn a wife - Fulani
The Fulani tribes practise Sharo before getting married. Here the groom is beaten by the older members of the community so as to earn a wife and respect. If the man is not strong enough to bare the pain, the wedding is called off.

Other than flogging, the bride family can pick Koowgal, which is a dowry payment option or the Kabbal, an Islamic ceremony similar to marriage but in the absence of the bride and groom.

7. Lip stretching - Ethiopia and Sudan
The people of Surma tribe are found in southern Sudan as well as southwestern Ethiopia. During teenage years, females undergo the lip stretching procedure which involves removing their lower teeth to accommodate a lip plate; the lip plate is increased in size yearly until it is an astounding size.

Some of the men do this similar exercise with their ears. They also indoctrinate their warriors known as 'stick fighters' by inflicting scars on them, the belief is that the more scars they have, the more attractive they are to female members of the tribe.

How to naturally improve your skin quality

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:00 AM PDT

When it comes to the clearing of skin, lemon is magical; it is one of the best ingredients that can be used to promote skin condition.

The idea of having a flawless skin should not be confused with skin bleaching.

Simply because it is possible for every skin, irrespective of colour, to be made more beautiful and flawless.

5 common reasons why men lose interest in relationships

These are five common, relatable reasons why men lose interest in women they were once in love with.

Sometimes people in relationships, once burning with a passion for each other suddenly begin to lose interest in the whole affair.

Reasons for this could range from exasperating habits like cheating, complacence and a bunch of others.

The major reasons why women pull out of relationships are already listed here.

For men, reasons for losing interest in a relationship with a woman they once liked could be one of the five common ones listed below:

1. Efforts don't match
If he does his best and you don't. it won't be long before he starts to get distant and aloof.

Effort in relationships do not have to be the same in value, it just has to be significant enough to count. You've just gotta to give back. If not, the relationship will look pretty one-sided and resentment will start to build.

2. You're not supportive
You should always let your man know that you're riding for him, that you've got his back especially if he is one who's obviously doing his best to do right by you.

If your words and actions rarely show support or any interest in the things he holds dear, he might start to feel that you really do not care about him

3. Cheating
Men are notorious for finding it difficult to deal with a woman who cheats on them. No one does, but men have a notoriety for being more intolerant to it. That's actually ironic, though, as women actually tend to forgive cheating from men a lot.

4. Difference in sex drive
If the gap in the sex drive between him and his girlfriend is vast, it will affect the relationship adversely and it won't be long before the man gets fed up.

If the woman has a higher sex drive, or if he has a higher sex drive, something's going to get terribly wrong as some point. This is why it is better to always have that conversation about sexual compatibility early enough.

5. Disrespect
Nothing makes people fed up more than constant disrespect. Being belittled, being made to feel like nothing, having your importance questioned and being made to feel like your presence, opinions and being doesn't count for much... anyone would seek to get out of a relationship under circumstance as this - most certainly men would, too!
