You just bought a new phone and wanted to give the old one out to someone, or you are sending it to off for repairs. The question from this scenario is, what do you do to your phone first?

Do you send it off to the person with your personal data? There is often news of phone engineers who access people's data and use them unlawfully?

There was a case of a lady who sent her phone for repairs, but she left her naked pictures in her phone gallery. The engineer transferred the pictures to his laptop and threatened to release them online unless the lady paid him. When she refused to pay, he published them online. Would you want to find yourself in that kind of situation? If not, then read on to know more.

Step-By-Step Process To Remove Your Personal Information From Your Phone Before Giving It Away

To keep yourself from falling victim to data misuse, you need to take the steps below:
  1. Prepare your phone for the transfer or repairs by removing the lock-screen password or pattern.

  2. Back up your phone data into external storage to avoid losing your stored data or information.

  3. After backing up your phone, rid your phone of all stored data. There are ways to do that depending on the type of phone you own. The phone can fall under the iOS or Android class.

iOS Phones

  • Locate Settings on your phone
  • Click on iCloud, locate "Find My iPhone," then tap "Turn off."
  • After that, go back to Settings and then to iCloud
  • From there, proceed to Sign Out. Select "Sign Out" and "Delete from my iPhone" when you see the option.
After that, you need to delete other data such as Contacts, Calendars, Photos, etc. It would be best never to delete them manually because they might be deleted but would be moved to junk or bin. Hence the best idea is to do a factory reset. The factory reset would return the phone to the way it was when fresh from the factory.

Apple Phone factory reset
  • Go to settings
  • Select General Tap Reset
  • Select "Erase All Content and Settings
  • Type in your passcode when the prompt comes on the screen

Android Phones

For every android phone, the first step to remove stored data from it is to remove your Gmail account from the phone before proceeding, as you will see below.

Samsung Phone
  • Locate Settings
  • Tap Cloud and tap Accounts
  • Tap Email
  • Select more, then choose "Remove Account."
  • Proceed to Settings, then choose "General Management."
  • Click "Reset" and select "Factory Data Reset."
  • Tap on Reset Device to finish the process.

Google Phone
  • Proceed to Systems and proceed to Advanced and tap Reset Options
  • Tap Erase all data
  • Reset your phone, then enter your PIN, pattern, or password
  • Tap Erase everything
  • Choose restart after your phone is done erasing

LG Phone
  • Proceed to Settings
  • Tap on the "General Tab," then tap Accounts, and then Sync
  • Locate and choose the email account you want to remove
  • Tap "More," then select "Remove Account."
  • After that, reset your phone by navigating to "Settings," then "General."
  • Proceed to "Backup and Reset."
  • Choose "Data Reset," then reset your phone

Motorola Phone
  • Locate the Settings icon
  • Scroll down and locate "Privacy."
  • Select "Factory Data Reset."
  • You would see the check box "Erase Internal Storage." Check the box to remove all data from your phone.
  • After that, tap "Reset phone."

Conclusion

After taking the above steps, the phone is as new then you can easily hand it over to whoever you want to with peace of mind. With these steps, you are ready to go. You can read more about how to protect your phone from unnecessary access to stay safe.

How To Keep Your Phone Safe From Hackers

Posted:

Hacking is rampant these days, especially with smartphones storing so many things that relate to us.

The use of smartphones has made every one of us vulnerable to the activities of hackers and internet fraudsters. Such information as online banking details, identity, email, accounts (Apple ID or Google account), social media accounts, credit/debit card details, etc.

Phone hackers target these data and compromise them without the owner's knowledge. They can do so much damage to your data or account once they have them.

For instance, they can use your social media account to send pornographic videos to your contact and others. They can also send messages to your contact to solicit funds. They can do much more than that.

The question of how to keep your phone safe from hackers is answered in this post. Do read on for more.

Symptoms Of A Hacked Phone

Your phone may be under attack once you notice one or two of the following:

  • Your phone battery gets drained faster than normal; malware and fraudulent apps are on your phone.
  • Your phone drags when being used.
  • Your phone crashes or freezes and does an unexpected restart
  • Your online account starts having strange activities
  • Your phone starts getting unknown calls or text messages.

Once you notice any or all of the above, it is time to swing into action because you are under attack by a hacker. What you need to do is to fight back and outwit them at their game. It would be best first to eradicate any malware on your phone. After that, you can now follow the steps presented below to keep your phone out of reach of hackers.

11 Tips and Tricks To Prevent Hackers From Invading Your Phone

  1. Stop downloading unreputable apps and ensure you go through reviews by other users before you download any app.

  2. Avoid jailbreaking your phone because it exposes your phone to various risks. It allows malware or spyware to get into your phone. It makes room for downloading apps from unofficial app stores.

  3. Let your phone be in your custody every time. You become vulnerable once your phone leaves your presence and gets into a hacker's reach.

  4. Up your security game by using passcodes and passwords that are not easy to guess. Avoid using your birthday or any other date. Do not use default codes like 0000 or 1234. Ensure you use an alpha-numeric password that is longer than six characters. Also, do not use a general password on all your accounts. That makes it easy for them because all other accounts are opened once they get one.

  5. Store passwords away from your phone or device. Understandably it's not easy to remember all passwords from different accounts. The solution is to download a password managing app like Kaspersky Password Manager or other good ones. These apps help you manage and keep your passwords from the prying eyes of hackers.

  6. Clear your internet history, cache, and cookies as frequently as you use your phone. Cookies, caches, and browsing history leave traces about you behind, which hackers can use to attack your accounts.

  7. Update all your phone apps regularly. Updates come with fixes that stamp out bugs that hackers can exploit to attack your phone.

  8. Enable two-factor authentication to increase your phone security. If a hacker gets your password and successfully uses it, he might not be able to proceed until he adds the second level of security. An example includes fingerprint, face ID, security questions, etc.

  9. Be cautious about using public Wi-Fi, and if you must use it, then ensure you activate VPN (a virtual private network). VPN encrypts and makes your data anonymous to unwanted viewers. There are different vendors with the product you can download on your phone to use for this.

  10. Activate "lost device tracking service" on your phone. Your phone might come with one for use, but if it doesn't, then download one from a reputable vendor.

  11. Avoid giving your phone to strangers to make emergency calls; they might be disguised hackers.

Bottomline

Your phone is you; keep it as safe as your heart. A single activity of a hacker can lead to years of damage to you. It can result in identity theft, financial fraud, etc.

Reed Hastings Netflix co-CEO - Variety

Russia in the bid to retaliate to America economic sanctions against her for invading Ukraine, has added additional 61 names to her list of blacklisted Americans.

According to media reports Tuesday evening, the list was updated and published on Monday, June 6, 2022, by Russia's Ministry of  Foreign Affairs who fingered Netflix's co-CEO Reed Hastings.

The Netflix's Executive has now joined over 1000 politicians, entertainers and moguls permanently banned from entering any Russian territory.

According to the Russian list nicknamed Russophobia, notable personalities in the list include President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and actor Morgan Freeman.

Freeman's ban was a big trend on the social media with fans ridiculing Russia over its decision to ban the actor.

The ban of Freeman was also traced to a 2017 Committee to Investigate Russia video which accused Russia of continued attacks on America's democracy.

The list also included deceased politicians such as former Senator John McCain, R-Ariz.; Senator Harry Reid, D-Nev; and former deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency Melissa Drisko.
