Simi Ogunleye, Song writer, singer and wife of Adekunle Gold, has said that her male counterparts are more privileged than the females while performing on stage.

The singer in her opinion said that male colleagues are more privileged while performing on stage because when male singers perform; they do so without heels and make up and when they start sweating they can remove their shirt without even thinking twice about it.

Simi thinks that this is being 'privileged.

The 'Duduke' crooner wrote:

"Men be on stage singing without heels and make up.

"They start sweating small like this, they off shirt without even thinking about it.

If that's not privilege, I don't know what is"

HURIWA asked Buhari to resign if he thought presidency was tough

Civil rights advocacy group Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to resign immediately if the job is tough for him.

Following the comment of President Muhammadu Buhari that the presidency is tough, HURIWA has called out the president to resign immediately. HURIWA is a Civil rights advocacy group known as the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria.

HURIWA revealed this in a statement on Tuesday, asking the president to call it to quit and minimise the damage his "crass incompetence and gross dereliction of duty would cost the country if he stayed on till May 29th 2023."

HURIWA, however, criticised the Mr President's call on ASUU, stating that "the administration bears the largest chunk of the blame for totally abandoning public tertiary institutions because the children of the President, Governors, Senators, ministers and heads of government agencies are all schooling in foreign educational institutions; including the ugly scenario that the Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly lived in Dubai the United Arab Emirates for the better part of the last seven years of the current administration of her husband.

"Following the admission by President Muhammadu Buhari that the Presidency is tough and that he is eager to go, a call has gone to President Muhammadu Buhari, from the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria to be honest enough to resign now to minimise the damage his crass incompetence and gross dereliction of duty would cost the Country if he stayed on till May 29th 2023," the statement further read.

“I’m eager to go,” Buhari said about his time as president

Posted: 12 Jul 2022 09:10 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari made a statement worth noting on Monday when he described his seven-year tenure as president as "tough," adding that he was eager to leave the office.

He was speaking with governors and political leaders who visited him to celebrate Sallah in his private residence in Daura. He also appealed to ASUU to consider the plight of the students, who he described as future generations, nothing that the strike has extended to six months.

He added that the strike is negatively impacting families, the educational system, and the future development of Nigeria.

Based on a statement signed by the President's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president disclosed when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress, legislators and political leaders at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.

The statement was titled 'Enough is enough, President Buhari tells ASUU, urges lecturers to consider generational consequences.'

Buhari also lamented the toll his official duty as the president had on him since 2015 and said he had not visited his house in Daura for almost a year based on office demands.

He said, "The observation that I abandoned my base was made by the Emir of Daura, Dr Faruk Umar Faruk, at the eid prayer ground. He held the microphone and told everyone that the last time I was in Daura was during the Eid-el-Kabir of 2021.

"In 10 to 11 months' time, I will come here. I have a better house in Kaduna, but it is too close to Abuja."

Mr President elucidated that his work schedule was demanding, citing that he recently had to sympathise with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, who had been absent from his family for so long.

He, therefore, claimed that his government had done well in various areas, especially infrastructure, compared to the previous administration judging by the resources available.

"I am eager to go. I can tell you it has been tough. I am grateful to God that people appreciate the personal sacrifices we have been making. I wish the person who is coming after me the very best," he declared.

Mr President also begged lecturers to consider the students as the strike was taking a significant toll on their academic lives and appealed to them to end it. He said the strike has affected the psychology of parents, students and stakeholders and led to many evil vices in the nation. He concluded by saying, "enough is enough."

He declared, "We hope that ASUU will sympathise with the people on the prolonged strike. Truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home. Don't hurt the next generation for goodness sake."

He also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, especially those close to ASUU leaders and members, to intervene in the crisis. He called them to persuade the lecturers to call off the unending strike and stem the effects it's having on the entire nation and generation.

Buhari further expresses his concern about the students' plight. He said, "Colonial type education was geared towards producing workers in government. Those jobs are no longer there. Our young people should get education to prepare them for self-employment. Now education is for the sake of education.

"Through technology, we are much more efficient. We should encourage our children to get education, not only to look for government jobs."

Muslim-Muslim ticket: Modu-Sheriff backs Tinubu’s choice

Posted: 12 Jul 2022 09:02 AM PDT

Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, former Governor of Borno state and chieftain of the APC, backs the decision of Tinubu to field a fellow Muslim as vice president. He was confident that Allah would give Bola Ahmed Tinubu victory come 2023.

Sheriff congratulated Senator Kashim Shettima and promised to mobilize his supporters nationwide to campaign for the flagbearers to ensure victory at the polls.

This was revealed in a statement on Monday night by the Director-General of the Ali Modu Sheriff Campaign Organization, Doctor Cairo Ojougboh, in which he said Shettima had notified Sheriff personally of his nomination immediately after he got to know about it.

"I have given my blessings to the Tinubu/ Shettima APC 2023 presidential ticket.

"We have given him and his principal our blessings, and we implore all hands to be on deck as we work in unity to ensure the party's electoral victory in 2023.

"All party stakeholders and members must work together to ensure that the APC wins the 2023 presidential election irrespective of whatever sentiments we may harbour.

"As an individual and a critical stakeholder of the APC, I am ready to work with the team and other stakeholders of the party to ensure its electoral victory in the 2023 general elections at all levels.

"I will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the APC wins the coming elections in landslide.

"We are all APC members and should come together and campaign for the Tinubu/Shettima presidential ticket and for the party to win the elections at all levels.

"From the depth of my heart, I support the Tinubu/Shettima presidential ticket and I believe that with Allah on our side, our victory is assured."

Muslim-Muslim ticket: CAN, MBF, Arewa ex-scribe, and others condemn APC’s stance

Posted: 12 Jul 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Image: Punch

The Muslim-Muslim ticket speculation was laid to rest when the APC presidential flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, announced former Borno State governor Senator Kashim Shettima as his substantive running mate.

The choice of Tinubu negates the advice of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which at the beginning warned presidential candidates to avoid fielding running mates from the same religion.

After disclosing to newsmen his choice of running mate, Tinubu declared in a statement the reason why he chose to field Shettima against public outcry:

"In full compliance with existing law and regulation, I submitted all necessary documents regarding my nomination as the APC presidential candidate to INEC. But, as was expected, the choice of my vice presidential running mate remained an open and burning question.

"This gave rise to much speculation and debate. Recent events (the voluntary withdrawal of my dear friend and brother, Ibrahim Masari) mean that I am called upon, today, to put an end to the speculation. I have never been an indecisive man and have no present intention to become one.

"What I am, however, is a democrat. And a democrat must listen to, and consult with, the people and his advisors so that he may reform and govern wisely and on their behalf. This I have done. My political career was not built on blind indifference to the views of others. I appreciate the perspectives of leading members of the party, political allies and key national figures who see Nigeria's future as I do. They gave me their views so that I might add their valuable insights to mine to reach the best decision possible and do so in a manner that strengthens the institutional fabric of our party as well as accelerates the evolution of our political democracy.

"Having now listened to the sage, careful advice of a broad section of the party and of the nation, there are a few points I feel I must make about the exceptional and extraordinary person with whom I will share the APC ticket and the principles of open and good governance that informed this choice.

"I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Others have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.

"Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.

"Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region. This is why, today, I announce the selection of Shettima as my partner and running mate in the mission to advance and reclaim the fortunes of this great country and the hopes of its people.

"In 1993, Nigerians embrace Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe in one of our fairest elections ever held.

The spirit of 1993 is upon us again in 2023."

However, shortly after the declaration, different reactions trailed the announcement.

CAN

CAN kick against the selection of Shettima, a Muslim like Tinubu.

CAN spokesperson Adebayo Oladeji gave an interview to our source (Guardian) and said the decision made by APC and Tinubu was wrong and insensitive in a polarised country like ours.

He added that currently, Nigeria has a pastor as the vice president, and Christian clerics and worshippers and being slaughtered in their droves; then, under a Muslim-Muslim government, the security of lives and properties of Christians is under threat.

According to Oladeji, Nigerians must brace up for the consequences of their actions should they endorse and vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

In his words: "We knew this was what he was going to do and we have warned against it. It is up to Nigerians to decide on what they want."

AREWA

Reacting to the move, AREWA, too, towed the line of CAN. Anthony Sani, the chieftain and former Secretary General of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), queried the choice of Tinubu in picking Shettima and said the choice would further divide Nigeria instead of uniting the country.

He said:

"The challenges posed by Muslim-Muslim ticket is not so much about winning the elections as to the aftermath of governance. In an era where some notable Nigerians have alleged Islamisation agenda against APC government, however misguided, this Muslim-Muslim ticket will provide such persons with more ammunition. More so that it will run against the promise by the APC candidate that he will unite the country by making Nigeria feel young again with the promise of glory days ahead."

HURIWA

HURIWA, which stands for Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, described the APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket as unconstitutional and illegal, then added that all Nigerians should reject the party at the poll.

HURIWA said Tinubu's decision was a wrong move and referred to Kaduna's Muslim-Muslim ticket discrimination and has brought nothing but trouble in the last five years under Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

The group said: "which constitutes an infraction against Section 42(1) of the Constitution and violation of broad-based composition of government as spelt out in section 14(3) of the Constitution on Federal Character Principles in appointments in Nigeria."

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN)

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), a Human rights lawyer, urged Nigerians to reject the APC for the party's Muslim-Muslim presidential choice. He described the decision as "a terrible choice, in one million ways!"

In a statement on Sunday, he enjoined Nigerians to vote out APC for allegedly being insensitive. He said: "Nigerians, whether Muslims, Christians, traditionalists, etc., should reject APC with their votes come 2023.

"A Muslim-Muslim ticket in present-day Nigeria is fuel for Boko Haram, the incentive for ISWAP and a call for more terrorists. Unless of course, those parading the ticket are themselves complicit. There is no better way to insult our sensibilities. I pray it is not true."

APC Rebirth Group

The APC rebirth group also voted against the Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying they wished for a Muslim-Christian ticket for the party. Comrade Aliyu Audu, the Co-convener of the group, said he believes that the presidential flagbearer must have a good reason for going for Shettima against popular opinion.

The group said: "We had wished for otherwise but we trust in the wisdom and political knowledge and skills of Asiwaju to make the best decision in the overall interest of national unity and development. A government can only exist when the party wins the election."

MBF

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) expressed their fears on the topic, saying the APC's choice is a danger to the collective wellbeing and unity of the country. They, therefore, assured Nigerians that the choice was an evil plot they would defeat in 2023.

Dr. Bitrus Pogu, the National President of the forum, revealed this in Makurdi, describing the choice as an unfortunate development.

He noted that the choice exposes the ignorance and insensitivity of the ruling party to the current mood and pains of Nigerians.

He said:

"It is an unfortunate development, unfortunate in the sense that we are living in a terrible period where the country is being tormented by insurgents from all over the place, starting from Borno with Boko Haram and Shettima is from there.

"And if such is coming now without consideration to the plurality of this country with regards to region, religion, and other issues, I think it is an unfortunate development.

"And for the presidential candidate of the APC to bow to such pressure is an unfortunate development. One would wish that they would look at what would be beneficial to Nigeria at this time.

"Nigerians have not recovered from the insurgency coming from mainly Islamic origin; it shows that the APC is insensitive to the plight of Nigeria and Nigerians. And it's not ready to bring healing, reconciliation, and rescue Nigeria from the problems it is facing.

"Now, it is also an unfortunate development because this time is not the same as the MKO Abiola time, which was several years ago. These are times that religion should be handled with care.

Senator Aliyu Wamakko

With the anxiety within the camp of Northwest governors over Tinubu's running mate, Senator Aliyu Maigatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto North pleaded for understanding among politicians. He encouraged politicians and stakeholders that as they prepare for the elections, "we as politicians and other stakeholders in the nation's nascent democracy must play by the rules and ensure rancour-free activities; doing otherwise will not do us or the country any good.''

He further begged qualified Nigerians to ensure they get registered and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), which, according to him, remained the only instrument required to vote in credible leaders.

Olorunfemi Ayo, (LP)

Mr. Olorunfemi Ayo, the deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party, equally weighed into the matter, saying the choice of APC was the height of the ruling party's insensitivity to the secular makeup of the country. He added that the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket choice did not come as a surprise to the Labour Party and Nigerians.

He said:

"To say that there are no Christians in the North or the Christians in the North are not competent or not worthy for an APC joint ticket in 2023 is to also justify what some people have been saying in different quarters that the plan of the President Buhari administration is to Islamise Nigeria.

"That is exactly what they are pushing, and they want to justify it by whatever means. The rest is left for Nigerians to decide whether they want to promote religious bigotry above the development of the country.

"In any political environment, where you are insensitive to the culture of the people and you want to force yourself on them. You can only continue to breed crises, as they started with crises from the inception of their government, till this time."

Abuja-Kaduna Train attack: N800m ransom paid to terrorists to release the seven hostages

Image: Punch

We earlier reported that seven hostages were released last week, and within two days after their release, news has filtered in that the terrorists collected N100 million per hostage, which totaled N800 million.

Our source gathered that the only foreigner among the freed seven hostages was believed to have paid N200 million. Also, according to our source, the terrorists were demanding N100 million from each of the 43 hostages remaining in the terrorists' den.

We earlier announced that Sheikh Ahmad Gumi's spokesman, Malam Tukur Mamu, released the new news of the hostages to the press.

While speaking, Mamu did not mention if any ransom was paid to the terrorists or not.

We gathered from our source that the bag seen in the group photograph with the hostages contained the ransom.

Lagos Boat Mishap: Sanwo-Olu orders probe into the accident

Posted: 12 Jul 2022 08:52 AM PDT

Image: New Nigerian Newspaper

Following the Mile 12-Ibeshe boat mishap of July 8 that claimed the lives of more than 17 people, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered a probe into the accident on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu released a statement through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, where he expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident and commiserated with the families of victims of the ill-fated boat.

He said:

The police are probing what went wrong and treating the sad incident as criminal. The boat, which is said to be unlicensed, obviously broke the waterways rules of "no night travel" and no overloading. Besides, not all of the passengers wore life jackets, and the boat did not take off from a government-approved jetty.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and others are assisting the investigators.

Anybody who is found to have contributed in any way to this tragedy will surely face the law to ensure that we do not have any such incidents in future. The waterways rules and regulations are clear; they must be respected in accordance with the greatest value that the Sanwo-Olu administration places on human life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. May The Almighty strengthen them in this difficult time.

Shettima: No guarantee that all Christians will vote for Christians... - Bishop Kukah

Posted: 11 Jul 2022 03:17 PM PDT

Image: Daily Post Nigeria

The decision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pick Senator Shettima as running mate has continued to generate reactions from well-meaning Nigerians.

Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, said that APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket choice for the 2023 presidential election was teamwork-based on calculation of what is best for the party.

Bishop Kuka released a statement he signed on Monday saying that Bola Ahmed Tinubu's decision to pick Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate does not call for any form of alarm.

Reacting to the development, Kuka asked aggrieved Nigerians to support other candidates they feel are better.

The Bishop's statement reads:

This is what you call team selection, and everybody will choose depending on what they think will give them a fair chance. So people will take responsibility for the choices they have made. For me, it is not something to lose sleep over.

If people feel unhappy with the kind of choices that have been made, that is why we are democrats; you can't force it. We outsiders cannot force a choice of any candidate.

It is now left for you to look at the choices that have been made. And there is no guarantee that all Christians will vote for Christians and all Muslims will vote for Muslims.

Shettima: APC governors meet with Buhari, support Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

Posted: 11 Jul 2022 03:18 PM PDT

Image: Vanguard

On Monday, nine APC governors visited President Buhari's private residence in Daura to felicitate with him over sallah. During the visit, they had a one-hour closed-door meeting with him.

After the meeting, they declared their support for Tinubu's choice of Senator Shettima as running mate.

According to the governors, the Tinubu-Shettima combination is a sure victory recipe for the party in the 2023 presidential election.

Abubakar Bagudu, the Chairman of the APC governors forum, said to pressmen after the closed-door meeting:

We were pleasantly surprised when Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu announced in Daura on Sunday that Senator Kashim Ibrahim Shettima was the Vice Presidential candidate.

We were happy that it is no less a person than Senator Shettima who was announced the Vice Presidential candidate. No doubt, Senator Shettima would complement the good qualities of Asiwaju Tinubu. We are very very happy at the choice. The two will complement each other and will surely consolidate on the achievements of the President in the past seven years .

Hope Uzodimma, Imo State Governor, also voiced his thoughts that Shettima's choice as the vice-presidential candidate was a decision made by the generality of the All Progressive Governors. He also said that all governors would put all machinery to work to secure victory for the APC in the 2023 elections.

Uzodimma said:

The choice of Senator Shettima as the vice presidential candidate is a collective decision. We shall work hard to ensure victory in all our states.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau also declared that the choice of the running mate was the presidential flagbearer's prerogative, and the APC governors' job was to ensure victory in the election.

In his words:

A presidential candidate has the prerogative of picking his Vice. But ours is to ensure the party's victory in the presidential election.

The nine governors that visited and had the closed-door meeting with the President include Abubakar Bagudu (Kebbi); Abubakar Bello (Niger); Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano); Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa); Aminu Masari (Katsina); Hope Uzodimma (Imo); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Simon Lalong (Plateau).

The Forum's Chairman, Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, led the group. Apart from El-Rufai, they all travelled by road from Katsina, where Governor Masari led them as chief host.

They drove into Mr. President's private residence a few minutes after 1 pm before the meeting kicked off. El-Rufai later joined them at the meeting.

The almost one-hour-long meeting ended with lunch with the President, and he saw them off at about 3:05 pm after an exchange of pleasantries.

Shettima: Abbo withdraws from Tinubu’s campaign team over Muslim-Muslim ticket

Posted: 11 Jul 2022 03:17 PM PDT

Image: kanyidaily.com

Ishaka Abbo, popularly known as sex-toy senator, has called it quit from the campaign team of APC presidential flagbearer Bola Tinubu.

His reasons for the move was due to Tinubu's choice of running mate. He said that Tinubu was irresponsible for picking Kashim Shettima, the former governor of Borno State. He kicked against Shettima as Tinubu's running because he is a Muslim.

After tweeting about his stance, Abbo further shared more details of the decision with journalists in Abuja on Monday.

According to Abbo, he embarked on a search for the appropriate running mate for Tinubu by meeting with a support group in Abuja. After meeting with the group, the conclusion was that Tinubu should not choose a Muslim as his running mate in the forthcoming election.

He said Tinubu did not take lessons from Buhari, that picked a Christian as running mate in 2015.

In his words:

For Tinubu now to be given the ticket and turn around to do what he couldn't achieve in 2015 despite opposition from Catholics and other Christian leaders is extremely irresponsible.

Buhari fought a civil war and understands the consequences of a divided nation. When Tinubu wanted to be VP in 2015, Buhari said no because he understood the importance of unity.

We sat down in Abuja and strategised, and we concluded that he should not take a Muslim as running mate. He (Tinubu) threw away the report.

My conscience will not allow me to campaign for Tinubu. I am a member of CAN; I cannot deny CAN. I remain in APC. But I will take the survival of my country first over political considerations.

We cannot work for such a man. I will oppose Christian-Christian ticket because I am interested in the stability of this country. A Christian-Christian ticket will be insensitive to Muslims of this country.

The country is evenly divided among Muslims and Christians. So any government that is Muslim-Muslim will be illegitimate and will never gain the respect of Christians.

According to the Zonal Coordinator, South-West of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, 13 more corpses have been recovered from the ill-fated boat that capsized on Saturday. Reports say that the boat was sailing from Mile 2 to Ibeshe when the accident occurred. With the additional bodies recovered, the number of dead bodies recovered so far is now 17.

He revealed this on Sunday in a statement, and the statement goes thus:

It has been found out that illegal operators are rendering services after the end of official hours of 7:00pm, thereby violating the Inland Waterway operations rules.

It was revealed that the regulatory bodies have tried to stamp out illegal operations of small boat operators who hardly use life jackets after official hours but more efforts will be put in place to stop them.

It was also observed that wooden boats are not permitted to be used as passengers' boat but it is only at these odd hours the illegal operators always put the lives of unsuspecting passengers at risk.

Efforts are on to address the gaps with all stakeholders such as Nigerian Navy's Special Boat Service, Association of Boat/Ferry Operators of Nigeria, LASWA, NIWA, NEMA and Marine Police to address the situation.

ASUU Strike: Health workers threaten FG with solidarity strike

In support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities which has been on strike for months, the Nigerian health workers have threatened to go on solidarity strike to pressure the Federal Government to bow to their demands.

The national president of the union, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Mr. Biobelemoye Josiah, revealed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. The statement was signed by him and Mr. Auwalu Kiyawa, the Acting Secretary-General of the union.

According to our source, the union enjoined the Federal government to implement all the agreements with the unions immediately.

The statement read:

MHWUN stands in solidarity with the university based unions in the ongoing struggle to emancipate and reposition the public tertiary Institutions in Nigeria for progressive development.

They also condemned the snail speed FG used in responding to ASUU and added that FG must do everything to protect the future of the youths by stemming the disruption of their academic life.

We call on the government to implement without further delay all the agreements it had entered with the unions.

We urge the relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari's earlier directive to resolve all outstanding issues with the unions is backed by immediate acceptable action that would end the stalemate.

MHWUN wishes to use this medium to unequivocally state that we firmly stand behind the university-based unions and the clear position of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership in this historic struggle.

Our state councils have been put on red alert, and we will not hesitate to declare a solidarity strike in support of the unions if the government fails to resolve the issues within a reasonable time.

The Health Union added that it is irresponsible of the government to allow its public tertiary institutions to be closed down over patriotic demands for better funding of its institutions and better working conditions/welfare of its teaching and non-teaching staff. They said that no government does that.

The match between Nigeria and Botswana produced four goals and notable goal celebrations. When Peace Efih scored the second goal, she did the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo's SIU celebration.
Rasheedat Ajibade after she made a run to round Burundi's goalkeeper, she was fouled winning a penalty kick in the process. She took the penalty and scored it making it the first goal of the night for the Super Falcons. She started the demolition work on the Burundian side.

Rasheedat was fantastic during the encounter, scoring a goal and providing two assists. She is one of the stars discovered at the tournament.

Meanwhile, after scoring the first goal from the spot, Rasheedat celebrated in a manner that caught everyone's attention. She lifted up her jersey to expose a white under vest with the inscription: "Thank you Jesus."

It's not as if there was anything wrong with the celebration but the striking thing is that she was supposed to be a Muslim. However, she preached Jesus to the entire world in a matter of minutes and that picture will be around for a long long time.

Furthermore, to make things more interesting, Rasheedat Ajibade after the encounter took to her Twitter handle to express more of her appreciation to Jesus.

It was a sweet victory Sunday night as the Falcons thumped Burundi 4-0 to progress to the quarter-final of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON.

It has been the apprehension of missing out on the qualification before the match after the Falcons lost their opening match against South Africa. The Falcons shut the mouth of their critics with the 4-0 convincing win over Burundi.

Rasheedat Ajibade scored the first goal from the penalty spot 25 minutes into the first half after being fouled by Burundi's goalkeeper, Jeanine Irakoze when Rasheedat brilliantly wanted to round her.

The goalkeeper was substituted for 16-year-old Amissa Inarunkundo because the clash with Rasheedat left her injured.

The 16-year-old did not give a good account of herself as she conceded two quick goals no thanks to the back line breakdown.

Peace Efih in the 28th minute stabbed the ball into the net for the second goal, and after scoring, she did the iconic 'Cristiano Rolado's SIU' celebration.

Uchenna Kanu, based in Mexico, made it 3-0 before half-time.

After the three goals, the Super Falcons started playing confidently, wasting many chances until the half-time whistle was blown.

Immediately the half-time commenced it was just one minute after that the fourth goal came from Uchenna Kanu, making it two goals for her and four for Nigeria. The goal came from a brilliant and unselfish assist by Ajibade.

The match continued with Falcon creating chances but could not finish, and it ended 4-0 in favour of the nine-time African champions.

As a result of the match, Falcons finished second behind South Africa, who defeated Botswana 1-0. Nigeria will now play Cameroon in the quarter-final for a place at next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Twitter set to fight, assembles legal team to sue Musk over dropped takeover

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 04:08 PM PDT

Elon Musk

Twitter Inc. has hired merger law heavyweight Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz LLP as it races to sue Elon Musk for moving to dump his $44 billion takeover of the company, according to people familiar with the matter.

Twitter Inc. has hired merger law heavyweight Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz LLP as it races to sue Elon Musk for moving to dump his $44 billion takeover of the company, according to people familiar with the matter.

The social media company aims to file suit early this week, according to the people, who declined to be identified because the matter is private. By hiring Wachtell, it gains access to lawyers including Bill Savitt and Leo Strine, who served as Chancellor of the Delaware Chancery Court, where the case will be heard.

Musk has brought in Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. The firm led his successful defense against a defamation claim in 2019 and is representing him as part of an ongoing shareholder lawsuit over his failed attempt to take Tesla Inc. private in 2018.

An official for Wachtell Lipton declined to comment, and officials for Quinn Emanuel couldn't be reached. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment. Musk and Jared Birchall, the head of his family office, did not respond to a request for comment.

Delaware is the corporate home to more than half of US public companies, including Twitter, and more than 60% of Fortune 500 firms. There, chancery judges -- business law experts -- hear cases without juries and can't award punitive damages. Based on previous merger fights, efforts to terminate a deal can play out within a few months, often ending with settlements to avoid further wrangling.

Top Names

Savitt, a Wachtell partner, is at the top of select group of A-list chancery court litigators. Companies such as health-insurer Anthem Inc., real-estate giant Sotheby's and financial titan KKR & Co. have lined up outside his door when deals turn sour or buyouts get challenged in Delaware.

Strine, who spent over 20 years working in the Delaware courts, most recently as Chief Justice of that state's Supreme Court, helped shape the legal norms that Musk will seek to test by terminating his agreement to acquire Twitter. Strine joined Wachtell in 2020.

Before becoming the Chief Justice, he served on the Delaware Court of Chancery as Chancellor from 2011, and as a Vice Chancellor from 1998.

Delaware Chancery Court typically frowns on efforts to back out of merger agreements. It's possible that one of Strine's most influential decisions will determine how Musk makes his case for ditching his Twitter takeover.

In 2000, Tyson Foods Inc. agreed to acquire rival IPB Corp. Soon after agreeing to the deal, the meat market suffered a precipitous downturn, impacting both companies financially. Tyson argued it had been given misleading information about IBP's business and was thus no longer obliged to complete the $3.2 billion merger.

In court, Strine disagreed that there had been a Material Adverse Change and ruled that Tyson must follow through with the deal. The ruling became a landmark and the Tyson-IBP case is still the basis for the way courts and corporations interpret the ability of a buyer to terminate a merger agreement.

The judges also have a say over whether breakup fees must be paid. In the Musk-Twitter deal, that fee is $1 billion.

In a regulatory filing after the official market closed Friday, Musk announced plans to walk away from his $54.20-a-share offer to buy Twitter, alleging that the company misrepresented user data. Twitter Chairman Bret Taylor responded by vowing to enforce the deal in what promises to be an arduous court brawl.

Twitter shares closed 5.1% lower at $36.81 in official trading, and dropped another 4.8% to about $35 in post-market activity.

Elon Musk Dumps $44bn deal to acquire Twitter

Posted: 12 Jul 2022 09:14 AM PDT

Elon Musk

World richest man, Elon Musk is seeking to end his $44bn (£36bn) bid to buy Twitter, alleging multiple breaches of the agreement.

The announcement is the latest twist in a long-running saga after the world's richest person decided to buy Twitter in April.

Mr Musk said he had backed out because Twitter failed to provide enough information on the number of spam and fake accounts.

Twitter says it plans to pursue legal action to enforce the agreement.

"The Twitter Board is committed to closing the transaction on the price and terms agreed upon with Mr Musk," Twitter chairman Bret Taylor wrote in a tweet, setting up a potentially long and protracted legal battle between the two sides.

The original merger agreement includes a $1bn (£830m) break-up fee.

Row over fake accounts

In May, Mr Musk said the deal was "temporarily on hold" as he was awaiting data on the number of fake and spam accounts on Twitter.

The billionaire businessman had asked for evidence to back the company's assertion that spam and bot accounts make up less than 5% of its total users.

In a letter filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr Musk's lawyer said Twitter had failed or refused to provide this information.

"Sometimes Twitter has ignored Mr Musk's requests, sometimes it has rejected them for reasons that appear to be unjustified, and sometimes it has claimed to comply while giving Mr Musk incomplete or unusable information," the letter reads.

Spam accounts are designed to spread information to large numbers of people and manipulate the way they interact with the platform. On Thursday, Twitter said it removed around 1 million such accounts each day.

Mr Musk believes that spam or bot accounts could account for 20% or more of Twitter users.

Shares in Twitter fell by 7% in extended trading after the announcement.

Elon Musk has for weeks been trying to get information about how many daily active users Twitter has.

Twitter has a problem with bots. In fact only yesterday it said it removed a million spam accounts a day.

In a filing, Mr Musk said he'd repeatedly been refused information about the number of bot accounts on Twitter – which is why he wished to terminate the deal.

Elon Musk though has already put pen to paper on this deal, and it is not totally clear whether he can back out at this stage. Mr Musk will need to prove that Twitter breached their agreement.

There are other potential reasons why Mr Musk might want to pull out of the deal.

The stock market price for large tech companies has fallen steeply in the last few months – did Musk offer too much?

And then there was the impact the potential merger was having on Mr Musk's other companies. Tesla's share price has fallen significantly since he announced his interest in Twitter.

His position on free speech and how Twitter might moderate in the future – based on the laws of individual countries – also at times came across as naïve. Did Elon Musk ultimately decide he had bitten off more than he could chew

Mr Musk said to be the world's richest person, is the founder of rocket company SpaceX and the CEO of electric car company Tesla.

A self-described "free speech absolutist", he had pledged to loosen Twitter's content moderation rules once the company was under his ownership.

He has long criticised Twitter's ban of some accounts, like that of former US President Donald Trump.

He has also called for more transparency over how the platform presents tweets to users, a system that currently allows some to be promoted and given wider audiences.
