Osun govt reply Adeleke Over Looting Accusation

Posted:

Image: People Gazette

Osun government has replied to the governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on their claim that the state government officials were diverting and looting government assets and property. They said the accusation was false.

According to a statement from Adeleke by his spokesman, Malam Olawale Rasheed, he warned Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and his allies against diversion and looting of the government's assets and public properties.

Adeleke said some government functionaries and governor's appointees are stealing assets of the state and converting them to individual use.

"We have it on good authority that Osun State assets within the state, Kogi, Lagos, Abuja, and outside the shore of the country, are being tampered with for private acquisition.

"We have detailed reports of several property currently being processed for ownership transfer involving serving commissioners and top government officials, hence, serious warning to those involved in the illegal deals," Rasheed said.

Reacting quickly to the statement, the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, said: "PDP is only peddling lies and propaganda just to curry underserved public sympathy."

Egbemode, in a statement, said that stealing or misappropration of funds cannot be traced to Oyetola, and added that, "the records are there for all to see and deduce from."

The commissioner debunked the claim by the PDP that government officials looting or diverting government assets/property.

"We know where Sen. Ademola Adeleke, the governor-elect, is coming from, and the world also knows the antecedent of the incumbent Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the hardworking leader, who has served the people of Osun State meritoriously.

"He does not have the background of pilfering or misappropriating funds. The records are there for verification," she said.

Egbemode, responding to the allegation that Oyetola took N17 billion to prosecute Saturday's governorship election, also said, "Govenormous Oyetola did not take any N17 billion loan to prosecute the election as alleged by Adeleke."

She therefore called on the people of the state to ignore what propagandists are saying referring to them as fake lamentations.

"Governor Oyetola has done well thus far and he will continue to do right by the people," Egbemode said.

How Education Minister Insisted Cut-off marks for varsities be above 120

On Thursday, at the 2022 policy meeting put together by JAMB, it was a heated session as stakeholders slug it out with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof Ishaq Oloyode, over what the cut-off marks should be for university admissions. Both education chieftains prevented the benchmark from being set at 120 at the meeting.

According to our report on this matter earlier, during the policy meeting at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, the board approved 150 as the cut-off mark for universities, 120 for polytechnics, and 100 for colleges of education.

Before the final decision was taken, a section of stakeholders voted that the minimum cut-off mark for universities be set at 120.

Sunny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, asked the stakeholders to review the cut-off.

"If we should set the minimum benchmark for universities at 120, what are we going to set for colleges of education? I think we should decide the benchmark for colleges of education first," the TETFund boss suggested.

Hence, they decided on the benchmarks for colleges of education and polytechnics; thereafter, Adamu opted that the standard should not go below 140.

"The benchmark should not go below 140. In fact, I suggest 145," the minister said.

There and then, the stakeholders chose the 140 minimum benchmark.

15 Kaduna APC strong men decamp from the party

Image: Daily Post

About Fifteen APC chieftains in Kaduna State left the party on Thursday because, according to them, the party lacks internal democracy.

One of the decampees told our source, The PUNCH, that about 500 members would be decamping too due to unresolved matters in the State Party.

The identities of the decampees include Mallam Audu Bode, Alh. Shuabu Ahmed, Hon. Habila Latu, Boniface Ubandoma, Mr. Yakubu Simon, Jashua Peter, Camio Bitrus, Patrick Paul (Pato), Mr. Samuel Wyah, Zaka Makoshi, Jonathan Fedelix, Barnabas Samuel (Barry), Shua'ibu Yusuf, Alexander Danladi (Lulu), Samuel Ibrahim.

Hon. Ibrahim Samuel, the party's Legal Adviser in Jema'a Local Government Area, issued a letter addressed to his Ward Chairman, and it reads:

"His decision to dump the party was based on the internal crises of the party, lack of internal democracy, and total disrespect.

"Another reason was that the State House of Assembly party primaries has come and gone but certainly not without some avoidable challenges. It is only logical and ideal that after every contest, all the aspirants that lost in the contest are brought together for genuine reconciliation with the flag bearer.

"Last month, instead of calling for reconciliation, the party stakeholders of our local government met at Kaduna under the guise of reconciliation, but the meeting turned out issuing warnings and threats to those that lost in the last primaries should any of them be caught in any anti-party activity in the forthcoming election."

In addition, in a press statement signed by Hon. Barnabas Samuel and Hon. Ibrahim Samuel (Oganto), issued to journalists in Kaduna on Thursday, the decampees complained about some anomalies during the primary. They said that some contestant contestants who emerged in the last party's congress were not the ones fielded during the primaries.

They claimed that the anomalies in the names led to the present court case between Sen. Uba Sani and Sha'aban.

They approved a cut-off mark of 120 for the polytechnics, while 140 was approved for universities.

According to our source, The PUNCH, the registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, earlier revealed at the 2022 policy meeting that out of 1,761,338 who wrote the 2022 Unified Matriculation Examinations, only 378,639 scored 200 and above.

He explained that 378,639 scored above 200; a total of 520,596 candidates scored 190 and above; 704,991 scored 180 and above; 934,103 scored 170 and above; 1,192, 057 scored 160 and above.

On awaiting results issue, Oloyede said the board allowed candidates with awaiting results to register for the exam.

"JAMB allowed awaiting results candidates to register and sit for the 2022 UTME. These candidates can't be considered for admission on awaiting result status. They must present their O'level results on the board's portal before the commencement of admissions."

Bishops at Shettima’s official unveiling not fake – Tinubu support organization

Posted:

Image: Kanyi Daily

The Tinubu Support Organisation on Thursday responded to the attacks on the clergypersons who graced the unveiling occasion of the Vice-Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima. The organization said the attacks are "unwarranted."

According to the group, the clergymen were neither fakes nor actors but unknown bishops still climbing the ladder of success.

The group released a statement by the group's Director of Media and Public relations, Bayo Onanuga, and opposed the rumours making the rounds on the internet.

The statement read, "Tinubu Campaign Organisation has described as unwarranted distractions the viral pictures and videos of some Christian clergymen and women at the unveiling of the All Progressives Congress Vice presidential candidate, Senator KASHIM SHETTIMA, on Wednesday in Abuja.

"APC formally presented Senator Shettima to the public and its various organs as the running mate to the party's presidential standard-bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the well-attended ceremony at Shehu Yar'Adua Centre, Abuja.

"The TCO, through its Director of Media and Communication, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said the event was an open affair, which allowed members of the public to attend, including the clergymen and some others now being derided by hirelings of the opposition.

"We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians to believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.

"They are church leaders who genuinely believe that Nigerians must eschew politics of hatred and religious bigotry and rather embrace politics of peace and nation building.

"We, therefore, deplore the hysterical twisting of the presence of these men and women in cassocks and the false accusation against our candidates, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Shettima.

"The orchestrated social media sensation over the presence of the men is needless and all calculated to detract from the huge success recorded at the momentous event on Wednesday.

"We believe Nigerians are too wise and discerning to see through this shenanigan. Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate, and our great party are working very hard to provide purposeful leadership and good progressive governance that will improve the quality of life of Nigerians.

"We are well aware that the opposition parties and the sponsors of the social media charade are jittery and threatened by the intimidating political credentials of our candidates. The only way they hope to shift attention of public scrutiny away from their uninspiring candidates and credentials is to create social media distraction.

"Our campaign is determined on focusing on core governance issues that affect all Nigerians with a view to confronting them and make the desired improvements in the standard of living of our people."

CAN dissociated self from clergymen at Shettima’s unveiling

Posted:

Image: Vanguard

The controversy surrounding the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the APC, Kashim Shettima, keeps expanding. On Wednesday, the Christian Association of Nigeria disowned the Bishops at the unveiling of the former Borno State governor. CAN said the clergymen were desperadoes who represented themselves.

CAN said that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the right to "hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them," however, his effort would do nothing but add to their many ropes without changing the need for fairness and justice.

In an interview with pressmen in Abuja, this revelation was made by CAN's Vice President (19 Northern States and Abuja) and Chairman in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph John Hayab.

He said:

"The people we saw at the unveiling of Shettima paraded as Bishops are people who did not have enough time to learn how to wear Bishop garments. Take a closer look at their photo, and you will see another Nollywood movie.

"CAN wonders why the desperation. First, a story was out claiming to have come from the Chairman of CAN Borno state, only to be refuted. Secondly, there was another lie that BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and his running mate were on their way to meet CAN President one night. A meeting that was not true and was on a night that the CAN President was in Alabama, USA attending the Baptist World Alliance Conference of which he is the Vice President.

"Another desperation story was that they met Papa Adeboye, which the RCCG later refuted. If Christians are not important, why the desperation?

"BAT is free to hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them. An effort that will only add to their many ropes when the political exercise is over but will not change the need for fairness and justice that CAN is calling for.

"CAN appreciate that we are in a democracy, no need to do funny and dubious things just to prove a point because it will in the end bounce back. BAT team should simply do what is right and stop the drama."

Muslim-Muslim Ticker: APC Muslim youths reject Shettima

Posted:

Image: theleaderng

A group of the APC identified as Muslim youths have rejected Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for the 2023 presidential poll.

They asked Tinubu to replace Shettima with a Northern cleric or Northern Christian political leader with immediate effect to boost the party's fortunes ahead of the forthcoming elections.

While talking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday evening, the group leader, Abdullahi Saleh, revealed they were vehement and totally against the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

According to him, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the right to choose whoever he pleases as running mate; however, his choice must not be against the collective sensibilities of the people.

He said, "As concerned stakeholders of the APC in the 19 Northern States in the country, we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without recourse to its implication on the electoral chances of the party and the attendant uproar such a decision could bring about in the country.

"It is also worrisome that of all the country's political parties, only the APC presented a Muslim-Muslim ticket. In our opinion, this is insensitive and a gross display of a lack of respect for our Christian brothers and sisters.

"This is on the heels that the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a Muslim from South West Nigeria, and picking another Muslim from the northern part of the country as his running mate is politically and morally indefensible.

"We hold the firm conviction that such a move can boomerang with unpleasant consequences for the APC at the general elections, hence the need for the party's leadership to make haste to correct this error of judgment," he added.

Saleh explained that Northern Nigeria is filled with credible candidates who are blessed with impressive credentials and a massive grassroots following that can complement the party's presidential ticket.

"As such, the 19 APC states Northern Muslims Forum sees the selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected with immediate effect by the relevant authorities within the party.

"The implication of non-action in this regard can only be imagined, so much so that the majority of the eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have elected to boycott the APC in protest of the disrespect and disregard to Northern Christians, whose population and relevance in the scheme of things in the region cannot be overemphasized.

"As a group, we wish to state unequivocally that we reject the choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as the vice presidential candidate of the APC.

"This decision is hinged on the need to ensure a balance in the presidential ticket of the APC, as it has been since the return of democracy in 1999.

"The APC must respect the religious diversity of the country. We hold the opinion that emphasis must be placed on ensuring a united house before the elections and not a fragmented house," he added.

The youths, therefore, urged President Buhari and Tinubu to replace Shettima with a Christian as the vice presidential candidate of the party.

"If the APC is desirous of recording electoral success in the 2023 presidential elections, it must retrace its steps by selecting a Christian cleric as its vice presidential candidate. The party must not be perceived as promoting a religious agenda by fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

"The 19 APC States Northern Muslim Forum condemns such a move in its totality as it is a recipe for the entrenchment of mutual suspicion between the Muslims and the Christians in the country, which won't augur well for relative peace and tranquillity.

"We consequently say no to a Muslim-Muslim ticket by the APC. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to kindly intervene to save the party from an electoral crisis. We urge Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emulate the example of President Muhammadu Buhari in the choice of his running mate in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

"This stance is hinged on the national interest. Our Christian brothers and sisters deserve a place in the scheme of things, and the APC must not be seen as a religiously insensitive party. The time to act is now," he said

Electricity: National grid collapsed for the sixth time this year

Posted:

Image: Businessday.ng

Wednesday will make it the fifth time that the national power collapsed this year.
According to information from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, the grid collapse occurred at about 11:27 am on Wednesday.

"Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20. We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.

"We will keep you updated on the situation," the Disco said via its Twitter handle on Wednesday.

This recent collapse made it the time this year it is happening. According to a news report from our source, The PUNCH, a grid collapse on June 13 made it the fifth time this year alone.

The collapse will shut electricity supplies down to some parts of the nation.

Nigeria first recorded a collapse in the power grid twice in March and twice in April this year. The reason is that the power generation on the system experienced fluctuations due to gas constraints, water management challenges, gas pipeline vandalism, and so on.

Also, our source, the PUNCH, reported a grid crash that reduced the electricity quantum from over 3,000MW on April 8, 2022, to as low as 10MW around 21.00 hours that day.

Following that crash, the report stated further that another collapse happened on April 9, 2022, and collapsed to 33MW around 01.00 hours after it had earlier posted a peak generation of 3,281.50MW at 00.00 hours the same day.

The collapse of March led the FG to call a meeting of stakeholders to address the issue.

Osun poll: Appeal court upholds Adeleke’s candidacy

On Wednesday, an Akure Court of Appeal in Ondo State capital upheld the judgment of the lower court, which affirmed that Ademola Adeleke, the State Governor-elect as the candidate of the PDP for last Saturday's governorship election.

Dotun Babayemi of the PDP had contested the primaries at the High Court. He challenged the validity of the primary held by the party's national leadership but lost the case.

After the judgment, Babayemi was not satisfied with the judgment; he took the case to the appeal court to challenge the ruling. However, the appeal court struck out the appeal on Wednesday.

Before the July 16 governorship election, Osun State, Babayemi took Adeleke to a federal high court in Osogbo, asking the court to declare him as the PDP candidate for the just concluded election.

Babayemi and Adeleke's party factions conducted separate governorship primaries on March 8, 2021. Babayemi was declared the primary winner held at the Children and Women Development Centre in Osogbo.

On the other hand, Adeleke emerged as the party's candidate at the primary election held at Osogbo City Stadium, which qualified him to be the party's guber flag bearer.

Muslim-Muslim ticket: Aggrieved APC members took their protest to the party secretariat

The ripple that Tinubu's Muslim-Muslim ticket created keeps expanding every passing day. It was reported by PUNCH that several demonstrators running into hundreds on Wednesday, stormed the APC national secretariat to register their grievances on the party's stance on the burning issue of the All-Muslim ticket.

Coincidentally, the protest occurred at the same time as the official unveiling of Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua in Abuja.

Few party members under the umbrella of APC Hausa-Fulani Youth Forum arrive at the party secretariat in six luxury buses and a few cars with different banners and chanting solidarity songs.

Inscriptions on the banners vary, but with the same message; some read as 'A cry for justice,' 'Drop Shettima and give slot to our Christian brothers,' Discrimination and mutual suspicion in our country' and so on.

Abdullahi Bilal Mohamadu, the Convener of Forum, spoke to our source, PUNCH, saying they will not stop protesting until the party does the right.

When asked why they chose today as the day the party officially unveiled Shettima, Mohammadu said it was a deliberate act to tender their grievances and ensure they reached the appropriate authorities.

The forum addressed a letter to the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and it reads:

"We write to your good office in light of the prevailing circumstances arising from the decision of our Presidential candidate to select a Northern Muslim as his vice presidential candidate.

"While it must be stated that there is a right to make decisions, however, such decisions must not be made to the collective detriment of the sensibilities of the people that make up the country of Nigeria, especially at a time of mutual suspicion amongst the Christians and Muslims in the northern part of the country.

"As concerned stakeholders of the APC and those who constitute the voting strength of our party, we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without recourse to its implication on the electoral chances of the party and the attendant uproar such a decision could bring about in the country.

"In our opinion, this is insensitive and a gross display of a lack of respect for our Christian brothers and sisters, especially the Middle Belt minority who have given all their best to us as one northern Nigeria. Picking another Muslim from the north eastern part of the country as his running mate is politically and morally indefensible.

"In Northern Nigeria, there are credible candidates with rich credentials and with massive grassroots following that can complement the presidential ticket of the APC in the presidential elections. As such, the Hausa – Fulani Youths Forum sees the selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected with immediate effect by the relevant authorities within the party.

"The implication of non-action in this regard can only be imagined, so much so that the majority of the eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have elected to boycott the APC in protest of the disrespect and disregard to our Northern Christian brothers, whose population and relevance in the scheme of things in the region cannot be overemphasized.

"If our party is desirous of recording electoral success in the 2023 presidential elections, it must retrace its steps by selecting a Christian from the Middle Belt as its vice presidential candidate.
