Friday was a sad day at the residence of a former State House of Assembly aspirant along the Imiringi Road in Yenagoa as bandits invaded it and shot the PDP chieftain, Odienyefa Ogbolosingha, dead.

Our source gathered that the gunmen t the bandits invaded the 48-year-old Ogbolosingha's residence along the Imiringi Road in Yenagoa and shot him dead on Friday.

The 48-year-old contested the PDP ticket for the 2023 state House of Assembly election. His elder brother, the late Michael Ogbolosingha, was a former chairman of the Yenagoa Local Government Council. He was from the Kalaba community in the Yenagoa LGA and a member of the Okordia-Zarama Cluster Development Board.

A community source who asked not to be named said the victim's killers had sent him a warning message with a contractor not to proceed with a road project under the cluster board some weeks prior to the incident.

"They sent him a message some two weeks ago or so warning him and a contractor to desist from embarking on a road project by the cluster board in the community. But he sublet the job. He has been a member of the board for some time.

"Now, yesterday (Friday), they have gunned him down in his house at Imiringi Road, Yenagoa," the source said.

Bayelsa Police Command has confirmed the incident through the command's spokesman Asinim Butswat.

He said, "Police operatives responded to a distress call at about 1400hours on Friday 22 July 2022 that armed men shot one Odeinyefa Ogbolosingha at his residence at Imiringi Road, Yenagoa.

"The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, for treatment, but was confirmed dead. Photograph and other evidence were taken at the scene. Investigation has commenced."

2023 Election: Labour Party rally groups for Obi in Lagos

Posted:

Image: 042Jam

On Thursday, the Labour Party (LP) commenced voters, support groups, and membership sensitisation drive in Lagos State.

According to the LP, the sensitisation was to stimulate action from more supporters and members for Peter Obi, the party's presidential candidate, and other candidates ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

At an interactive session in Lagos, Bashiru Apapa, the party's Deputy National Chairman, addressing various support groups and leaders, called for synergy and unity to deliver the state for Mr. Obi and all LP candidates in 2023.

He highlighted the importance of coordinating all support groups for Mr. Obi's presidential ambition to help him win the elections.

"When Obi became the LP presidential candidate, we have been deliberating on how to harmonise the support groups with executives of the party.

"And we thought it wise to have synergy and work together nationwide so that we will not be working against ourselves.

"That is why today's meeting is an important one for us to be acquainted and map out the strategies to achieve our objectives.

"We need to know what we intend to do to actualise the dream of enthroning Peter Obi as the next President of Nigeria and why we must all do our best to make sure that the purpose is achieved," Mr. Apapa said.

According to him, Mr. Obi has many support groups, and the best strategy is to coordinate them properly.

"2023 is very close, we must start and mobilise. We need to increase our pace. It is our collective responsibility. We must not lose our focus in this project," he added.

The National Legal Adviser of LP, Akingbade Oyelegan, said apart from sensitization the meeting was also to familiarize its massive supporters of the LP ideology.

"There is a surge in the party, and some of these our teeming supporters do not know the LP ideology and what we stand for. Our ideology is based on Equal Opportunity and Social Justice for all.

"The problem we have before now is the fact that some of the support groups do not want to align with the Coalition for Peter Obi," Mr. Oyelegan said.

While stressing the need for all groups to be on the same page while avoiding corruption, Mr. Oyelegan also noted the challenge of delivering the presidency to Mr. Obi. He, however, was optimistic that the support groups and the party would achieve the impossible.

"We are prepared to wrestle power but we know it is not going to come easy. We want to come together so that we can fight the battle. We have over 100 support groups and we are still expecting more," he said.

Adeyinka Adetokunbo-Azubuike, the Zonal Director, Mobilisation and Logistics (South West) Coalition for Peter Obi, added his voice to the call by asking the 41 support groups for Mr. Obi in the zone to work together to succeed.

"This is a harmonisation move and sensitisation on Permanent Voter's Card (PVC). The Coalition for Peter Obi is one body that is housing all support groups that are out to campaign for Obi. We are 100 per cent sure Peter Obi will win."

Augustina Ogene, the Lagos State Coordinator, Like-Minds for Peter Obi (LMPO), was also at the meeting, describing it as a milestone. She said that the group must have synergy for the party to actualize the dream of bringing Mr. Obi to Aso Rock.

Mrs. Ogene declared that the LP's presidential flagbearer's chances at the forthcoming election were bright and said the support groups have structures across Lagos state LGAs and the nation at large.

Perjury: Court permits Tinubu to be prosecuted

On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja gave the Incorporated Trustees of Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy the permission to apply for an order of mandamus the mandate the Inspector-General of Police, to prosecute Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential flagbearer over alleges perjury.

Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the leave to the NGO while delivering the judgment in an ex-parte application argued by the group's lawyer, Ugo Nwofor.

The NGO mentioned above filed the ex-parte application following the alleged refusal of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to arrest and prosecute Tinubu for allegedly lying under oath regarding his educational qualifications.

Nwofor, while moving the application, informed Justice Ekwo that it maintained the rule of the Federal High Court to first obtain the court's permission before proceeding with a suit seeking an order to compel the police chief to carry out his constitutional duties.

Justice Ekwo, in a brief ruling, held that the ex-parte application was meritorious and subsequently granted it and fixed November 1 as the suit's substantive hearing date.

The group's main suit, dated and filed on July 4, has the Nigerian Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police as first and second respondents.

The CSO said the suit against the police was necessitated by the IG's refusal to take action on its petition against Tinubu over an offense it claimed the presidential candidate was indicted on by the Lagos State House of Assembly in 1999.

The applicant maintained that by Sections 214 and 215 of the constitution and Section 4 of the Nigerian Police Act, 2020, the police have the statutory responsibility to "prevent, detect and investigate criminal allegations whether brought to their notice by individuals, person or persons, corporate bodies, institutions etc."

Consequently, the applicant in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1058/2022 is asking the court for "An order of mandamus compelling the respondents to comply with Sections 31 and 32 of the Police Act and Section 3 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2015 in respect of alleged crime laid out in complaint of the applicant encapsulated in the letter of June 16, 2022 received by the respondents on the same date and titled, Demand for Criminal Prosecution of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu under Sections 191,192 and 463 of the Criminal Code Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 Consequent upon the Findings of the Lagos State House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee, 1999."

The applicant claimed that by Section 31 of the Nigerian Police Act, the respondents are duty bound to investigate alleged crime brought to them and report their findings to the Attorney General of the Federation or of a state, as the case may be, for legal advice.

In its petition to the IGP, the applicant claimed that Tinubu lied on oath in his form CF 001 he submitted to INEC in aid of his qualification for the governorship election in Lagos State in 1999.

The applicant claimed that Tinubu "forged all the educational certificates he listed in his INEC Form CF 001 which he admitted he did not possess in annexure C."

MURIC lash out at CAN on fake ‘bishops’ at Shettima unveiling

Posted:

Image: Aba City Blog

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has attacked the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for its comments on the clerics seen at the unveiling of the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate.

The Christian Association of Nigeria has described the clerics who were present at the ceremony dressed in cassocks as a "scene from a Nollywood movie."

On Friday, Ishaq Akintola, director of MURIC, issued a statement citing a report published by PM News saying that the identities of the clerics were known and that CAN was only raising a "false alarm".

"The identities of all the Christian clerics who attended the event have been revealed and none is fake. It is crystal clear from the above that CAN is not to be trusted. CAN disowns its own members who are not ordinary Christians but knowledgeable bishops and pastors. This shows that a caucus within the leadership of CAN has unleashed tyranny of the oligarchy on Christendom in Nigeria," the statement reads.

"The fact that several bishops and pastors dared CAN by attending the unveiling of the APC running mate in spite of directives by the umbrella Christian body to the contrary is also symptomatic of the hypocrisy and ineffectiveness of CAN's noise over the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

"It is a toothless bulldog. CAN is long in rhetoric, short in facts. It also proves that serious-minded and knowledgeable Christians who can differentiate between right and wrong no longer follow CAN's instructions."

Akintola also quoted verses from the Bible and accused CAN of trying to divide the country.

"The attendance of the unveiling of Tinubu's running mate two days ago and the attempt by CAN to paint the Christian clerics who attended the event as fake is another attempt by Nigeria's Christian leaders to divide the country, whip up anti-Muslim sentiments and promote anarchy," he said.

"CAN has shot itself in the foot. It insists that no Christian should vote for Tinubu's party, but it forgot that at least a Christian cleric is the gubernatorial candidate in Benue State. CAN should permanently close this can of worms and never open it again.

"Whereas Paul says, 'Do not lie to one another' (Colossians 3:9-10), Christian leaders find it expedient to pour torrents of lies on their followers. CAN leaders willfully ignore the warning in Proverbs, '…He who breathes out lies will perish' (Proverbs 19:9). Christian leaders are adept at crying wolf where there is none. They raise false alarm to cause confusion."

'Hired bishops': APC's Tinubu and Shettima lack respect for the Christian faith

Posted:

Image: Sight News

On Thursday, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) said the alleged paying of fake 'bishops' to grace the unveiling of Kashim Shettima as Bola Tinubu's running mate of the APC was blasphemous and treacherous.

According to HURIWA, the action demonstrates the absolute lack of respect of the APC for the Christian faith.

According to a statement by HURIWA's National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, Nigeria would have been on fire had Christian-Christian candidates hired fake Imams to attend their political events.

Recall that it was a show of shame at the unveiling ceremony at the Shehu Yar'Adua Cantre, Abuja, when an array of unpleasantly dressed individuals allegedly hired 'bishops' were scattered all over the place.

Social media flooded with footages of the alleged fake bishops dressed in cassocks at the unveiling ceremony amid controversy surrounding the same faith ticket of the ruling party.

One of the 'bishops', Joseph Odaudu, had reportedly said the APC hired them from a motor park behind Eagle Square, promised to pay them N100,000 each, but paid them N40,000.

HURIWA's Onwubiko declared, "The APC and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu; as well as his running mate, Kashim Shettima, again insulted the millions of Christians in Nigeria by staging an insolent spectacle of hired bishops at the unveiling of Shettima.

"This singular act is blasphemous and treacherous against Christianity by the Muslim-Muslim presidential hopefuls. Nigeria would have been on fire if Christian-Christian presidential hopefuls had recruited fake Imams to portray public acceptance."

HURIWA further described as lame, unacceptable and pungent excuse the explanation of the Tinubu Support Organisation that the hired persons were upcoming bishops.

"Its failure to mention the names of the hired bishops and the denomination or churches they are from show the grand deception and shenanigan in the whole despicable episode staged by Tinubu and Shettima candidacy, which in any event is a combination that divides Nigeria alongside religious lines.

"The APC and Tinubu support team should stop the dark propaganda. It has failed, and pushing it further or justifying the despicable action is condemnable. We challenge Tinubu and Shettima to publish the list of these so-called clerics, their Churches, denominations and exact addresses.

"HURIWA warns the APC, Tinubu and Shettima against ridiculing the Christian faith after excluding Christians in their selection process. Whilst we preach religious tolerance, we frown upon any action that deride another's faith to score political points. This is devilish and should be rejected by all men and good women of good conscience," the group said.

Election 2023 Senatorial ticket: Umahi defeated in Court by Agom-Eze

Posted:

Image: Pointblank News

Princess Ann Agom-Eze on Friday emerged as the APC Senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South Zone based on the Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State.

Governor Umahi through his Counsel, Roy Nweze Umahi, had sued INEC in Abakaliki to compel it to recognise him as the bonafide senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South senatorial District.

However, on Tuesday, Princess Agom-Eze, who came second in the primaries, approached the court, asking them not to recognise Governor Umahi's Senatorial bid.

Umahi's Counsel held that the governor's name as the 1st winner of the Ebonyi South Senatorial primary election that occurred at Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state should be recognised by INEC.

Mr Austin Umahi (the governor's younger brother), a contender, withdrew at the 2nd primary election on the 9th day of June 2022, wherein the governor was reported to have won unopposed.

Delivering his judgement on Friday, Justice Fatun Riman cited section 115 of the Electoral Act 2022, saying the governor was not an aspirant and cannot participate in the election or pre-election matters of the All Progressives Congress as regards the Ebonyi South zone, whose primary held on the 28th day of May 2022.

According to the above section of the new Electoral Act, the governor neither procured forms for nor participated in the election and cannot claim any right based on the primary election.

This is coming on the heels of a revelation by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mike Igini, that politicians who procured multiple forms were criminals and risk two years imprisonment.

Reacting, the Counsel to Mrs Agom-Eze, Barr Nwonu Nnaemeka, said his team's argument was its client, upon the withdrawal of Austin Umahi from the primary, she should claim all her rights as regards the exercise, being the second runner-up.

Labour union bashed Lai Mohammed over his insensitive comment

Posted:

Image: Nigerian Eye

A faction of the Labour union called the All Workers Convergence (AWC) declared that the position of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on the NLC, proposed nationwide protest is illegitimate and anti-social.

Comrade Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of AWC, disclosed this on Thursday.

Earlier, the Minister of Information and Culture stated that the proposed NLC nationwide protest is illegal.

AWC reacted to the comment by wondering when Lai Mohammed because a judge.

While insisting that protest is legal in all parts of the world and Nigeria would not be an exception, AWC called all civil servants to join the protest. Emelieze also asked Nigerian workers to call on government officials to stop insulting the sensitivity of Nigerians.

Emelieze urged the NLC to proceed with the protest as planned and ignore Lai Muhammed. He said that the minister has shown over time that he is never on the side of the people.

Emelieze said, "We, the Nigerian workers, welcome the call for the two days national protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in solidarity with the striking university workers. We call on all workers nationwide to join the protest and make it a success.

"We are, however, dismayed by the position of the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Muhammed, who has turned himself to the judiciary and has unanimously declared the protest as illegal. The position of Muhammed is illegitimate and anti-social.

"He is being hunted by the failure of his government to meet up with the needs of Nigerians. We, however, call on the NLC to go ahead with the mobilization and ignore the ignoble position of Mr. Lai Muhammed, who has over the years proven that he is never on the side of the people.

"Protest everywhere is legal, ours in Nigeria will not be different. We the Nigerian workers call on government officials to stop insulting the sensitivity of Nigerians. There is no going back on this two days protest that is long overdue".

ASUU strike: FG pleaded to NLC to suspend its planned protest

Posted:

Image: Punch

The Federal Government pleaded with the Nigeria Labour Congress to suspend its planned protest over the prolonged ASUU strike.

On Thursday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, met with the leadership of the NLC in his office to appeal to them.

Other personalities at the meeting include the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kachollom Daju.

While talking, the Labor Minister disclosed to the labour leaders the efforts the FG has made so far to resolve the current crisis in the university system. He added that the FG is still working to forge a better future for the sector.

Recall that the NLC announced on July 17 that it would embark on a nationwide protest on July 26 and 27 in solidarity with ASUU to pressure the FG to resolve the unending strike.

In a statement, signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Olajide Oshundun, the minister reminded the NLC leadership that he added them into the three-party negotiation going on in the Labour Ministry; and as a result, they should shelve the rally or protest.

Adding further, he informed the labour executives that the Federal Executive Council instructed him to notify them to consider the severe security implications the protest might cause.

He also added that the Department of State Service sent a report to his office issuing a strong warning to the labour leader not to embark on the July 26 and 27 proposed strike.

He, therefore, enjoined the NLC excos to reconsider their stance regarding the rally to prevent hoodlums from highjacking it to cause security breaches in the nation.

He also expresses the worry of the Government that politicians can take advantage of the rally to cause mayhem in the country.

In his words:

"The masses might wrongly interpret the rally as a ploy by the NLC to enhance the chances of the Labour Party presidential candidate, a situation which could spur the supporters of the other political parties into violence.

"Section 40 of the constitution is clear on Freedom of Association. One of the provisions is that people of like minds can organise themselves and form a political party. There is also a provision that people in work or employment can organise themselves into unions. They are two parallels. Parallels don't meet.

"I heard when you said you are mobilising for the Labour Party. But, a trade union is not a political party. Look at the Trade Union Act. It does not allow trade unions to use their contributions to support any political party."

The labour leaders assured the Government that the rally would be peaceful, promising to prevent infiltrators from joining the protest. They said that through the Deputy President of the NLC, Comrade Najeem Usman, and the General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboajah.

Ugboajah expressed the appreciation of the NLC to the minister for his efforts toward resolving the ASUU crisis and pleaded with him not to suspend the conciliation.

Ugboajah added, "We commend you for championing the harmonisation of salaries of workers in the country. We don't understand why a messenger in the Nigeria National Petroleum Company or the Central Bank should be earning more than a level eight officer in the Ministry."
