As the ASUU strike enters day 155 on Tuesday, the union plans to meet in the first week of August 2022 to decide whether to suspend or continue the strike.

ASUU went on strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, over what the union described as the failure of the government to address some of its demands.

The planned meeting was confirmed on Monday via Dr. Gbolohan Bolarin, the Chairman of ASUU, Federal University of Technology, Minna chapter.

On the meeting date, Dr. Bolarin said it would come up either on July 30 or August 1, 2022.

Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, had accused the union of engaging in a lopsided agreement with the Federal Government through the Prof Nimi Briggs committee.

Speaking before the NEC meeting, Bolarin dashed the hope of many regarding calling off industrial action.

According to him, the government has not brought anything to the table that could lead to suspending the strike.

"We are not even at a point to vote on continuation or not because there is nothing from the Federal Government yet.

"The NEC will be holding its meeting early next month (August). That should be August 1. The meeting might even be on July 30," he said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the National Universities Commission called on Vice Chancellors to support ongoing efforts by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to end the long overdue strike.

The commission's Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, said in Abuja during the opening of the 2022 NUC management retreat with Nigerian university vice-chancellors.

Rasheed said, "Our universities have been confronted with uncertainties due to the unfortunate strike.

"ASUU strike is in the sixth month and, as vice-chancellors, we know the negative consequences of the prolong closure of universities. We know what it means in-terms of its effect on the economy of a nation.

"As vice chancellors, we know what it means in terms of our institutional reputation and the future of our youths.

"University education is fundamental to success and a nation's economy. Nations explore teaching, research and community development for aspiration of goals."

Immediately after the opening of the retreat, some of the vice chancellors accompanied Rasheed to a stakeholders' meeting on the ASUU strike.

When asked if the union would discuss the ongoing strike, the ASUU chairperson said, "That is about the only issue."

On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja declared Senator Obinna Ogba (a representative of Ebonyi Central Zone) as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state come 2023.

It was gathered that the court ruled in favour of Senator Obinna Ogba on Tuesday.

The prominent PDP member who claimed anonymity confirmed the story from the court premises.

Another PDP big wig, Elder Fred Udeogu, also confirmed the story to our source, The PUNCH. He said the court ruling would help put an end to the crisis presently experienced in the party.

Udeogu said, "Yes, the Appeal has ruled in favour of Senator Obinna Ogba.

"We thank God for this development, which shows there is still hope for us in this country, with the judiciary. It's a well-deserved judgment, and we give God the Glory.

In May, the party conducted its primaries between the 28th and 29th of the month. Chief Ifeanyi Odii was elected the party's guber flagbearer, but the primary was cancelled afterward.

However, the primaries was rescheduled and held on June 4th and 5th, 2022, and Senator Ogba won it. The result did not go down well with Odii, who went to court to upturn the candidature of Ogba in a Federal High Court in Abakaliki. Odii's move made Ogba approach the Court of Appeal.

Impeachment: Oyo Deputy Governor kicked out of office

On Monday, Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, was impeached by the House of Assembly of the state.

Impeaching the deputy governor came from the recommendation of the seven-man panel that was set up to investigate Rauf Olaniyan over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Last week, the panel was put together by the Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, to investigate at least five allegations in a petition against the embattled deputy governor. The impeachment will commence immediately, according to the assembly.

The committee's report was presented during Monday's plenary by the Majority leader of the house, Hon Sanjo Adedoyin, who revealed that the Deputy Governor was found guilty of all the allegations against him.

The panel's recommendations were presented at the plenary, and all the 23 PDP lawmakers present voted to support the recommendations.

Olaniyan was elected into office in 2019 with Governor Seyi Makinde under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party; however, specific issues came up between him and the governor over time.

This year, the issues between the governor and deputy degenerated further to become virtually irreconcilable, especially when Rauf Olaniyan decamped from PDP to APC.

Snapchat for Web: Chat and make video calls on desktop

As many smartphone services are moving the web, Snapchat is joining the train. It is bringing snapping, chatting, and video calling features to the desktop via its new web app. This was the first time the platform made its service available off smartphones.

Snapchat for web allows you to log in with a Snapchat account to send private messages or call friends on the desktop. As the excitement grows, unfortunately, Snapchat Web will not be available to everyone. It will be only exclusive to Snapchat Plus subscribers before others.

This Snapchat for Web is coming as the first prominent feature since the company launched its the paid tier sometime in June. This feature will be available first to subscribers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, it will not be available on all browsers - it will only work on Google's Chrome browser. Apple users browsing with Safari will not be able to access the app; they should download Chrome.

According to Nathan Boyd, the Head of Messaging Product, Snapchat, offering a web option makes a lot of sense because users today frequently make use of desktop computers/laptops more. Although Snapchat was designed as a visual-first messaging app, branching to the web is a game changer.

Snapchat for web offers you extra space to chat and call using the same window, with Snap's AR Lenses coming soon. During the pandemic, users make use of computers more. Also, as the new school year approaches, Snap strategized to offer users more products on the web over time.

Snapchat for web works like its mobile option because it also opens to your webcam like the mobile option. In addition, on the Web version, you can edit your Bitmoji. Snap places itself basically as an AR platform for its Lenses; however, the core of its app use is private, temporary messaging, and calling.

With that, Snapchat for Web is poised to compete with Discord and WhatsApp from Meta, which already has its desktop game up tight. According to Boyd, Snap's 100 million users call each other on Snapchat monthly, staying up to an average of more than 30 minutes on the call a day. He added that chatting is usually the last thing people do before closing the app.

Boyd said, "We are always looking for ways to meet our community where they are," he says in an interview. "It just felt like something that was an unmet opportunity."

In conclusion, it is a firm belief that when Snap mentioned the Snapchat for Web app to its subscriber, it was the first sign that revealed that Snap is taking its paid tier users seriously since it's another way of making money for the company.

The heat is seriously on Snap to monetize its 332 million daily active subscribers, which is way more than Twitter's users since revenue growth is slowing. Snapchat for web after launch will not come with ads which is a bid to keep loyalists returning to the app. However, it should be noted that ads are Snap's primary revenue source.
