StudentCam 2023 - Only Three Weeks Left

When it was announced back in September the entry deadline for the 2023 C-SPAN StudentCam contest seemed so far away. Now that 2023 is here, the deadline feels very close. That's because it is close! The entry deadline for the 2023 C-SPAN StudentCam contest is January 20, 2023.

Every year C-SPAN hosts the StudentCam video contest for middle school and high school students in the United States. This year's version of the contest was announced yesterday. The theme of this year's contest is "If you were a newly elected member of Congress, which issue would be your first priority and why?"

The StudentCam contest is open to students in sixth through twelfth grade. There is a category for middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Students can submit individual work or work in teams of up to three members. All videos must be between five and six minutes in length. The incorporation of C-SPAN footage into the videos is required.

The StudentCam contest is open to students in the United States. The contest deadline is January 20, 2023. All videos must include some C-SPAN footage. This year more than $100,000 in prizes will be awarded. Complete contest rules can be found here and the prize list can be found here. There are prizes for students as well as for teachers.

Applications for Education
This year's contest prompt is a great one to incorporate into a class about government, civics, and current events. Even if your students don't enter the contest, the question is a good one to ponder.

C-SPAN offers some excellent resources to help teachers help their students prepare entries for the StudentCam contest. Those resources include research templates, video script templates, and project checklists. You can find all of the teacher resources here

How to Collaborate on Canva Documents

The new Canva Documents tool has a lot of great features for teachers and students. Not the least of which is the ability to collaborate on documents and designs.

The collaboration feature on Canva Documents enables you to invite anyone to work with you as a full editor or commenter on any document that you create from scratch or create from a template. Those who you invite to collaborate with you can add comments and suggestions into the margins of your documents.

Much like Google Docs and the online version of Word, Canva documents has a revision history that you can view to see the changes you and your collaborators have made to your documents.

Watch the video below to learn how to use the collaboration feature in Canva Documents.

Applications for Education
Much like in Google Documents, the revision history in Canva Documents could prove to save a lot of frustration and confusion when students are working together for the first time. Being able to quickly view versions of the document can end arguments about who did what or who contributed the most.

Try using one of Canva's note-taking templates to have students work together to record notes and observations during a science lab or similar group activity.
