Tackling food waste is a low-hanging fruit for greenhouse gas emission reduction and resource conservation. China, like countries across the globe, struggles with reining in food waste. To rein in this waste, the Xi Administration passed an Anti-food waste law in 2021 and launched a number of campaigns. Yet restaurants still waste some 34 million tons of food each year. To tackle the restaurant challenge from the bottom-up, the environmental group Rare is taking an innovative approach to reduce restaurant waste in China by mobilizing new social norms, and creative tactics to change daily behaviors of restaurant staff. Restaurants participating in Rare's pilot programs have reduced their food waste by almost 20%.
